To me, one of the understated things about Heart is Nancy's backup vocals. They use it like a secret weapon to accent Ann's voice, and they use it so cleverly. It's like having a fast car that also has a nitrous boost.
In a similar vein to this one is Heart's "Dreamboat Annie"--probably my favorite song of theirs.
Yes!
Seconded! Beautiful song.
Dreamboat Annie long version! You are so dang right sir!!! I have it! 😍😍@@CharlesPhillips-no3sz
💯 YES! I like the live video where you can see the reaction of their “new found” fame on Ann’s face...... 💯🔥🤙🏽😎
Love that album. I don't know if it was inspired by it or not, but in the 1930's there was a movie called "Tugboat Annie" (in the 1950's they made a TV series about it also). It was about a female Tugboat owner/operator. I always saw that movie/TV show in my mind when I listen to the album.
I had a white basset hound that passed about 6 months ago. She was the sweetest dog you would ever want to meet. Unlike other bassets she didnt howl and barely barked. We were told from the lady that we took her from that she had been horribly abused as a puppy. We had that girl for about 10 years, and she loved to watch butterflies. So when i hear this song I get really sad and happy all at the same time because it reminds me of one of the sweetest animals that was ever put on this earth. She had no enemies, no hate, and only wanted love, attention, and some food. When she met other animals she would jump and dance.
I truly believe they are our angels sent to guide & protect during the hard times.
Oh my goodness, you're making me tear up! I'm sure she knew how loved and safe she was with you. Thank you for giving her a wonderful home where she could watch those butterflies. I'm also teary because I have a 14 year old dog, and though she's laying here beside me now, she's starting to have some struggles and it reminds me every day how painfully short our time is with them.
@@hellokimmy68 Exact same story here. Thanks for this comment.
@@christianmarler2253 my sweet girl passed away last week. Well, we helped her cross the rainbow bridge as peacefully as possible. I wish she was still lying next to me.
@@hellokimmy68 My goodness, I am so very sorry! Though the emotions are so fresh, just keep reflecting on what a blessing I know she was to your lives, and what a blessing you were to hers, My pal, Willy, was my mom's dog, but he outlived her and came to live with me. I tell people he is not my son but my little brother since we had the same mom. He's also 14, nearly 15. We are trying to make the most of our time, as it is always limited. May God bless you, and bless her little soul. 🦮🌼🦋
The name of this album says it all, "Dog and Butterfly"... it has two sides, the "Dog" side, (the rockin' side) and the "Butterfly" side, (the more mellow music). Truly a classic in Heart's recordings, a true masterpiece... the entire album.
Heart was usually rocking, but they were also capable of GORGEOUS songs. This and Dreamboat Annie were 2 of those. I mean truly gorgeous. 😊❤
One of my absolute favorite Heart songs.
Mine too, it is incredible ❤
Mine too!!
Please find the “Dreamboat Annie” video from back in early 70’s. We know the sisters sing beautifully, but they were gorgeous to this young teenage boy of the 70’s ! 😁
AGREED!! The Dreamboat Annie album cover was so very beautiful!
Agreed, the entire album is a brilliant piece of art.
I’m an old boomer and hard rocker, that being said this has always been one of my favorite songs from Heart, I love how Nancy sings harmony above Ann’s melody when normally the harmony is below, it’s a unique sound that’s perfect for this song
Absolutely
You kind of took the words out of my mouth. I was long haired teenager listening to Led Zep, Nugent and of course Heart and others and always loved this song.
Yes, Nancy doesn't get any credit really, but her and Ann's voices play off on each other's really well....I mean very well blended and beautiful...love it
Heart is another band that gets better the more you go back to their first albums
Oh, this song is so beautiful. It just gives me chills. And when Nancy come in on the harmony is just gorgeous.
True story Ann Wilson was inspired to write Dog and Butterfly when her dog was chasing a butterfly.
That makes it even better.😅
The Soundgarden song Like Suicide was written by Chris Cornell after seeing a bird fly into a window.
I just love Nancy's understated harmonies on this song! The way their voices blend together is just pure magic. For another song in which they sing together (and even more so) is their cover of Led Zeppelin's song "The Battle of Evermore"! And they both even play instruments in that one!!!!!!! Give it a try one day!
Or their own "Sylvan Song/Dream of the Archer".
One of their most beautiful songs. Really shows just how good Anne really is. Best singer ever!
This song came out when my father was dying of cancer while I was in high school. It was so special to me at the time, and to this day, every time I hear it, I cry because it is such a poignant story of a woman who is faced with adversity, disappointment, challenge, what have you, and the metaphor that is used by her father to help her through difficult times is so powerful. It helped me get through a lot of dark days and difficult times. Thank you for listening to this song. It is a gem.
💖
HEART - " Even It Up " another one of their big hit songs Very Up - Tempo Rock n Roll and also Includes some groovy Horns.
All of the worlds problems are put on hold listening to Ann and Nancy sing together on this one.
Ann Wilson is widely regarded as one of the best female rock voices of all time. That being said, 16-year old me had a thing for Nancy back in the day...
😆 Me too! Graduated high school in 76. Some of my best memories are staring at Heart album covers ! 😁
That album cover of Little Queen....😍🥰❤
Oh man. You shoulda told her. Coulda been the move for the ages
Me too. 100%
I would stare at the front cover of Little Queen or the inside of this album at poor Nancy as a dorky teenage boy. 😂😂😂
Me absolutely too!
This is literally the most underrated song by Heart, one of my all-time favs by them. Stripped down and just natural talent flowing through a beautiful story.
This is one of my favorite Heart songs of all time. Gorgeous harmonies between Ann and Nancy.
"Cry To Me" is a beautiful acoustic ballad.
Yes it is. Would be great to see their reaction to that song.
This is a beautiful childhood memory
J & Amber, you will LOVE their "Kick It Out" !!!
Basically the opposite of Dog & Butterfly. 🕺
Any 70s Rock bands FORMED IN THE 70s were @ their best in the 70s Herse Heart in the 70s, Arrowsmith Acdc .The Eagles ,Queen Boston ,Kansas, Bad company. BTO ELO Super Tramp, Styx The Cars .The Police, Toto
Awesome, classic song ! Not sure who told you that this was only Ann and Nancy, but they were absolutely incorrect... this is the entire band.
Except, Roger Fisher was not playing on this song.
Finally, this really shows the versatility of Heart as the whole album of Dreamboat Annie🎶🎶🎶
You are finally back to 70’s Heart! One of these days I would LOVE to see you listen to the live version of Mistral Wind. It’s from their greatest hits live album and it’s a vocal powerhouse, and again,it’s LIVE! Also, from the same album, they do Unchained Melody and it will leave you speechless with Ann showing off her vocal range better than any other song out there. You won’t believe how she sounds live. Now you got me excited to see them next month in concert!
This is one of my wife's lullaby songs she would sing to our babies a very long time ago. Now we are getting Grandkids. They probably still get these type of songs too.
Nancy's back up vocals and coming in off time fits it just right and her voice is nearly like Ann's with just a slight bit of difference that sounds unique even though I use to think it was Ann double tracking her own voice when the song was new to my ears ...
Not just one of my favorite Heart songs. One of my favorite songs, period. The harmony on this one gets me every time.
Great song; great album; Ann and Nancy are amazing and compliment each other with Ann's powerful vocals and Nancy with her guitar prowess and vocals too!
Roger Fisher is the Lindsay Buckingham of Heart. He co-wrote many of their early songs with Ann and Nancy.
The entire album is amazing. This is such a beautiful tune.
Finally, somebody reacts to this song❤ my favorite heart song of all time. Thank you so much when you get a chance check out the Seattle concert version of the song it's amazing
Thanks for recognizing Nancy's contribution on acoustic guitar and the lovely backing vocals. I know Ann is the face and voice of Heart, but Nancy is the engine that makes it go.
Ann has said she was inspired when she looked out a window and saw a dog relentlessly chasing a butterfly. She saw the song as an inspiration when things get tough to "keep going after it." - wikipedia
Beautiful song. Probably my favorite Heart song ever. I can’t listen to it without crying. It’s perfect.
Love to hear that simple, family harmony without heavy production. These women are the EPITOME of classic and classy. ✌️❤️
This song and album meant so much to me. In 1978 I had major back surgery and was in a body cast. I got the tape for Christmas and it helped me through some tough emotional times. Thank you so much for playing it today. I still have the tape ❤❤❤!!!
Next Heart song you all need to check out: Mistral Wind an epic song from the Dog and Butterfly album.
Ann could sing anything, her voice was so strong & beautiful…nice song! ♥️♥️
I love their early stuff so much. I have dreamboat annie, little queen, magazine, and dog and butterfly on vinyl. Great band and great talent.
"Dreamboat Annie" is another beauty from a softer Heart, but it's one of the shortest songs I've ever heard. It will leave you wanting for more of it, for sure.
Songs on one side of the album were soft (Butterfly) and the other side was harder (Dog) - just a great listen.
This and Dreamboat Annie are my two favorite Heart tunes
LOVE THIS SONG WITH NANCY ON GUITAR/BACKING VOCALS. DOG AND BUTTERFLY WAS THEIR '78 ALBUM AND THE LAST ONE BEFORE THEY WENT MORE MAINSTREAM POP. CHECK OUT MORE EARLY HEART LIKE LOVE ALIVE, LITTLE QUEEN, MISTRAL WIND, COOK WITH FIRE, KICK IT OUT
Timeless...still stands up.
Ann's voice is so amazing.
One of the first songs that made me love Heart. Her voice is beautiful on this song.
This is a great LP and more acoustic than their earlier stuff. My pops used to play it a lot in the late 70's. Good memories 🔥
Dreamboat Annie is another great slower Heart song (comes in several variations, slower and faster-all great) but by far my favorite slower Heart song is the haunting How Deep it Goes. Beautiful and mysterious. ❤❤❤
If you haven't yet reacted to the heart song (Dreamboat Annie) I think you should try this one you'll love it just as much. It's from their first album Dreamboat Annie 1975......also try the songs (dream of an Archer) from the album Little Queen 1977 & the song (Tell it like it is) from their Greatest Hits/Live album it is a compilation of greatest hits, live recordings and new tracks done in 1980 & please try the song Will You Be There (In the Morning) from their album desire walks on 1993....... you can't go wrong with any of these songs you will luv them all.
This song heals people who have lost their most cherished companions. This song is just beautiful, they don't make music like this anymore, wish people would continue the sounds through the eras today in new music. How come no one does that? Heart on the other hand.... just wow, everyone should have the experience of hearing their music. Every song they've made is amazing. Folk-pop is very underrated and needs a comeback.
Whoever told you this song was "Just the two of them, Ann and Nancy" didn't know what they were talking about. Yes, Ann is doing lead vocal (as usual ) and Nancy is playing acoustic guitar (As was usual on a lot of Heart songs) But Howard Leese is playing piano and Steve Fossen is on bass. And although not credited, you can clearly hear drums in that chorus, probably Drummer Michael Derosier. Sure, there may have been a few songs in their catalog back in the early days that were _'just'_ Ann and Nancy, but this is NOT one of them. People really need to get this ridiculous idea out of their heads that Heart was the "Ann and Nancy Wilson band". In fact, Ann and Nancy weren't even the founding members of the band. Bass player, Steve Fossen and guitarist Roger Fisher formed the band originally with two other guys. The band went through several membership changes even before Ann and Nancy were brought in later with Steve and Roger being the two original members constant throughout those changes. Ann Wilson likes to say the other members don't matter and that the band would have happened without them. That's a pretty selfish notion on her part and frankly not true, The early sound of Heart that made them successful would have never happened as it did without Roger, Steve Howard and Mike's musical input. Heart was a group of musicians and everyone played an important part in the making of their music. Jeeze. 🙄
Can't believe they haven't done Dreamboat Annie unless it was blocked.
It probably doesn't get suggested that often, because it was not a "hit single" played on the radio. Only people who have heard and love the album from beginning to end would know it.
Such a beautiful song released in September of 1978. Ann Wilson wrote the lyrics and the music was co-written by Ann & Nancy Wilson. Ann's vocals are so flawless on this song. Nancy is playing the 12 string acoustic guitar, Howard is on the piano, Steve on the bass and Mike on the drums. Steve & Mike left Heart in March of 1982 and Howard left in June of 1996.
When I was first listening to Heart in the 70s I would just listen to the rock and roll songs and skip the songs on their records that were like this song. I didn't care to hear these slow songs of theirs. I didn't give them a chance. I was young and I just wanted to rock. I didn't know any better. I listen to them now and I really really enjoy and appreciate them. It's like listening to Heart for the first time.
Hearing this song as a 10 year old in 1978, I still remember to this day how riveted I was by it, it touched something so deep and peaceful, beautiful and hopeful, I feel it just the same even now listening to it again
We're the same age, and I feel the same way; it's such a beautiful song.
We grew up with some amazing music all around us.
This is one of the most beautiful songs that they have, IMO. Thanks for the reactions!
Its bout freakin time guys!!!!
Great choice. You can't go wrong with any song from their first 4 albums (Dreamboat Annie, Little Queen, Dog & Buttery and Magazine. Far beyond common rock songs, every piece is a treasure. After those 4 LPs their songs became more simple rock and less complex in structure and arrangement, beginning with "Bebe Le Strange".
Fave Heart song. Masterpiece. Induces both tears & smiles. Heartfelt reaction to a lovely tune. Thx. 🙏
Yes! Finally! I requested this probably two years ago and again the last two times you did Heart. Not only one of my favorites, but I also perform this at karaoke.
We’re getting older, the world’s getting colder. For the love of me, I don’t understand the reason why. I really feel those words more than ever. One of my favorite Heart songs!
So excited to see you guys react to this, I remember suggesting it to you when you first discovered Heart years ago LOL all good things to those who wait💙🐕🦋
"Sing" Carpenters. Great song with some surprises in the little song birds in the background. Brings back great memories. Amber will love it.
I am so thrilled that you finally reacted to this song! Ann and Nancy Wilson are the absolute queens of Rock, but they can do soft and gentle just as powerfully, and this is the perfect example.
I'm glad you checked out this side of them. Ann Wilson just puts a smile on my face.
I had heard their songs and liked them but this is the one I fell in love with them for. Stopped me in my tracks and brought tears to my eyes❤
Jay and Amber i recently became a huge RSR fan, I adore how you react to so many songs that are integral to my life and love of music. With that being said Heart is my favorite female band with Ann being the voice that changed my entire life. “Dog and Butterfly” exemplifies such heartfelt beauty and grace, I’m glad you found it. Thank You
I'm seeing Heart in concert again this Thursday. These Dreams and Alone Live in Seattle is a great video.
Hey Jay and Amber!!! Don't forget that Nancy not only plays the beautiful acoustic guitar on this song but also is singing that gorgeous harmony with Ann as well!! Ann, Nancy, an acoustic guitar, maybe a little bass and drums. That's all you need!!
One of the best things to come out of Seattle! These gals are an American treasure. Thanks for sharing this one. 🙂
Thanks for this one kiddos. It’s simply everything that’s good in the universe in a song. Awesome shirts today
I love dog and butterfly. So beautiful. 💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
Dreamboat Annie is another great song.
Heart had a lot of ballades and acoustic songs on their albums "Dreamboat Annie", "Soul of the Sea", "Love Me Like Music - I'll be Your Song" off their first album. Every album in the 70's were about half rock and half acoustic ... I really like "Sylvan Song/Dream of the Archer" off the "Little Queen" album. btw... Nancy sang a lead vocal on "Treat Me Well" on that album.
Those always made it on my cassette tapes. ☺️
How I love Ann Wilson's voice on these first Heart albums. Just amazing.
I think this is one of their most beautiful songs. The lyric "We're getting older, and the world is getting colder." That stands true today. Check out "Dreamboat Annie" a great song by them.
Hey, guys! This album holds a special place in my early tween years. I remember the nights I used to play "Dog and Butterfly", start to finish, over and over again. It's an absolute gem. Heart had such a big and positive influence on me growing up. And that influence and inspiration remains til this day. Love this album! Peace. 🕊
HEART - " LITTLE QUEEN " Studio Version 5:12 minutes of ROCKIN' and ROLLIN ' 1977 album that started it all ( Barracuda ) The Drumming and Guitaring is so COOL
I've been a Heart fanatic for over 15 years, and I LOVE seeing people discover their music and appreciate them! If you're into this, you need to hear Mistral Wind. It's a deep cut, but it is stunning. It's soft and hard rock - a swirling, Zeppelin-like epic.
I grew up loving this album, thanks to my older brother's record collection. "Mistral Wind" is next on the album after this song, and while not a "hit", it rocks, and I think y'all would love it!
Such a phenomenal band. Those sisters are just so special. Love them. ❤
I'll Tati LA Queen Q.U.AAM little Queen and dreamboat.Annie dream boat ironies. All those are excellent songs by heart. It's the old time you gotta go back
HOW, how about Springsteen s PRI n JST AAM question mark Bruce b? R? Uca question mark NO, no, that's a song Springsteen. Dirty journey while Eric AR Ic church C IQR C. H aren't church? He does a song Springsteen.
I gotta admit it though I don't like getting Lynn. To you MMA l unlock it. I'm not getting in the tunnel. Turn on the blove. Yeah, it's a good one that's a classic song by Bruce Springsteen tunnel. Tunnel of love. Now, brother Bruce BR UC. Are you see a Hey, does do this? So it's called the tunnel tunnel of love alright.😊😊
"Mistral Wind" is an awesome song by Heart,, Gotta listen to it!!
Just started listening to that song...love it! U like "Sing Child"?
My favorite song of theirs
This song holds so much emotion for me. I was 14 years old when it came out. Perfect timing, as I was losing my childhood innocence, my "young world crashing around me," and "frozen strangers" were beginning to "steal my fires." Watching you two react to it - Amber, I think you almost got tears at the first place I always do - I understand more deeply why I love it so. For me, this song is about the battle we fight in adolescence. Holding on to childhood playfulness, rolling back to our "warm soft ground," but having "another night, in a strange town," where the adventures of young adulthood are beckoning, and the "voice of confusion," whispering new, barely understood, messages. The butterfly is the vague dawning of awareness of adulthood. It continues to flit away, just out of reach. But she had to try. She had to try.
This is the Heart I prefer, not that I don't like their latter material, but their song writing back then was just brilliant.
Dog and Butterfy was the very first Heart album I purchased in the early 70's. We played it so much that we wore it out. Had to get another one. Was fortunate to see them in concert many, many times over the years, and they NEVER disappointed.
Amazingly beautiful song! The bridge where she hits those high parts is my favorite part of the song. 😊
One of my all-time favorite song from Heart!
One of my favorite by Heart, thanks.❤
Saw them back in the day , fantastic. They are touring now if they come near you it is worth seeing them.
Classic heart and a well written song. Ann's vocals are beautiful and the acoustic guitar creates a vibe that just makes you close your eyes and see the story.
This song is about a poem Ann had written looking out her window and seeing her sheepdog chasing a butterfly. It's a great song ❤️🐾
I Love how much Nancy's Harmony Vocals add to this song ❤
Nice, my fav Heart song! Glad y'all liked it. Great reaction! 😁
This album was a breath of fresh air when released in the late 70's....."Minstrel Wind" especially set the Wilson sisters up as the female Led Zeppelin.
This is one of my favorite open-road driving songs. ❤
One of my favorite memories as a young child was sitting in my mother's lap listening to this song and looking at a companion book that came with the two records set. Now I was only maybe 3 years old. But I remember it. And it's still one of my favorite songs now and I'm 55. There are no bad songs on this set of records. Dream about Amy is their best album I think.
Wow, four videos today! I LOVE THIS SONG!!
As much as i adore 80's Heart, this will always be my favorite Heart song. Incidentally it's Ann's favorite song too 😉
And that open A chord Nancy plays...., she is the Queen of open chords. 😍
