- Melvin, Kevon and Keith, collectively known as the R&B group After 7, never gave up on their dream to make a name for themselves in the music industry. They took a major leap of faith leaving their secure day jobs and, thankfully, the risk paid off ten-fold. However, just when they started to really enjoy their success, things went left. Ultimately, they were forced to make the painful decision to walk away from it all.

After 7 has a lot of timeless classic hits
This is the only time I will applaud nepotism. “Can’t Stop” is classic.
Babyface would admit himself that as vocalists, his talented brothers were better singers than he. I love me some Babyface, but if I had to choose...
Wow this is a testament to Babyface’s talent. He literally made them happen!
That's true, but I honestly think his brothers sing better than he does.
Their cover of Baby I'm for Real is a classic
Yes
💯
Next year will be the 35th anniversary of After 7's self-titled debut album and the 25th anniversary of Kevon Edmonds' solo debut album
They still have countless R&B hits despite not going further and issues within the group
When I was little I thought the lead singer Kevon was a woman whenever my parents would play their CDs lol. Now as an adult and music fan I can really appreciate his pure high tenor vocals, truly one of a kind!
Me too and others, I was in grade school singing this
Lmao me too I didn’t think a man could sound like that
After 7's self-titled debut album is a classic
The first time I heard the single "One Night" was at a roller skating rink....I been hooked on that jam ever since!!🤩💯🎶🎶🎶
this story is a good illustration of how success in the entertainment industry is not what people think it is.
This band helped forever change the landscape of music in the late 80s & 90s with their New Jack Swing sound. Babyface in my opinion is probably the greatest songwriter to ever grace r&b with all of the timeless songs he penned. Thank you for this video as ‘Can’t Stop’ listening to After 7❤️💯🎶
My condolences to the family & friends for their loss of Melvin 🙏🏾.
But hol’ up…6 BOYS ?? 😮
Yeah 6. And if you look them up, it shows Babyface and Kevon were born a few months apart.
Ready Or Not is my favorite song
Kevon and Melvin Edmonds also sang with Babyface on Babyface's MTV Unplugged episode in 1997 along with Marc Nelson, Eric Clapton and Sheila E
You are getting ALL my FAVES, lol. After 7 is one of my favorite groups of all time. I have seen them live a few times and got to meet them twice when Danny joined. They are the NICEST guys. So humble and kind. And they sound AMAZING!! Ready or Not will forever be my SONG lol. The vocals are just incredible!!
Did you ever meet Melvin?
@@vanityposh6348 no 😔 he had already passed when I met them. I wish I could have. His voice was golden ✨️
Love these stories so much
Man, I loooooove me some After 7!!!! Thank you for this!
That 24/7 song by kevon was 🔥 and still is
It’s great that they were able to break in the Music business at 30+ years old. I feel like back then, age didn’t matter. If you had it you had. But now in today’s era of music, they want to sign younger artists with ages ranging for 15-25. Once you reach 30, chances of reaching famous is very slim.
It wasn't easy back then either. Even in movies, stars had to lie about their age to get certain parts. So glad After 7 were able to break through though. That was rare.
@@Clonehalle I wonder why is it that the music industry hardly ever signed everybody over the age of 30 for the exception of Shania Twain, Chris Stapleton, Sheryl Crow, Tina Turner, etc.?
Most of the artists in the top 20 in 2023 are 30+
@@unprogrammedminds can you name them
@@unprogrammedminds and how long ago they were signed? They might have been signed years ago in the 20s.
Danny is my boy!!! So glad he’s part of such an amazing group!!!
Virgin Records did a good job keeping the ages of After 7 a secret, because if word came out that those dudes were older than they actually were, their careers would have been over.
Looking at that photo of The Deele just made me laugh and think of Soul Glo. Got to love the 80s 😂😂😂
I Love the Songs "Can't Stop" (One World 12') Version and "Ready or Not" (LP) Version.
When watching this... they'd reminded me of another favorite rb group of mine in the late 80's early 90's "Surface" anyone remembers?🤔😃🤩💯🎶🎶🎶🎶
One of my favorite R&B groups ever!
Last year was the 30th anniversary of After 7's sophomore album Takin My Time
Next year will be 5 years since Melvin Edmonds passed away
One of the best r&b groups 💚💚💚💚
🎶🎶🎶 "One Night"🎶🎶🎶💯😍 that's my " favorite jam! Even though it wasn't released as a single😲
Ready or Not is one of my absolute favorite songs.
After 7 made some marvelous hits
Great story on After 7
LOVE Their music🌹🌹🌹 ❤🔥❤🔥❤🔥❤🔥
After 7 will always be one of the best male vocal group of the 80's, their ages was never an issue from those of us who really knows great vocalists when they hear it, i seen them in concert in 2007, along with the WHISPERS, and STEPHANIE Mills💯💥💥🥰 they were so amazing, KEVON literally touches and reach's out to the ladies in the audience, he is such a great looking man🥰 in every way!!!
do the deele next
I so appreciate you doing a story on After 7. I've been in l9ve with their music from day one. Melvin's passing has left a huge void amongst his family as well as his fans. May he continued to rest easy ❤🙏❤️🙏
Such an amazing group, sad they didn't get the necessary push. I always felt due to them being older and in the 90s that the industry didn't seem to back them and they didn't reinvent themselves.
Melvin and Kevon 1-2 punch was so undeniable them brothers were such a power duo in that group tbh they really didn’t need Keith 🤷🏾♀️ R.I. P Melvin
Thanks for another great reporting keep up to good work the big brother die but baby face is alive
Kevon is sooo handsome he looks like trey songs when he was younger 🤣😍😍
Always wanted to know more about the legendary After 7. Great report! Thank you!!
had no idea that Melvin passed away smh their part in Soul Food is my favorite. dope song ❤️
After 7 would forever be my favourite R&B group of all time. They had the perfect balance of Kevon's falsetto and range, coupled with Melvin's raspy and authentic soul. Not to mention Keith's contributions that rounded out to what is to my ears, the perfect sound. They were/are skilled enough to absolutely sing the hell out of a song without needing to resort to vocal theatrics that some groups are known for. Timeless was a fantastic comeback album - and sadly the last in which Melvin appeared as a vocalist. "I want you" would have been a #1 hit in the 90s for sure. Their newest release was good also, although it did take me a few listens to get used to the more modern sound. The new edition of Danny to the group is a great move as he is a superb vocalist too.
I'm not a music industry guru, but I also think that releasing albums too many years apart might have stopped the momentum where other artists were releasing music about every 2 years.
It's always After 7 in my house.
Oh I forgot to mention, I'm definitely going against the grain with most fans and of course sales records, but I think 'Takin' My Time' is their best work. I wore the CD player out with that one and I still play it start to finish every so often.
They sang way better than Babyface
That's what I'm saying. Kevon has the voice of an angel😇😇😇
I like them all, the all had a uniqueness about them but that kevon voice was undefeated
So true.
I always thought so too.
It’s messed up cause I felt like Keith should have more lead roles I’m sure he could handle it
Would love to see a video about phajja and Shea Jones as well
Loved ❤ this
The deal looked scary af 😂
I miss After 7.
Nice 👍🙂 group, R.I.P. Melvin Edmonds.
They're still around! What's the last official release of theirs that you have heard? Timeless and Unfinished Business are great releases!
They did a killer cover of sara smile. Till this day I love milestone song and when I'm with you from.kevon...my cousin Introduced me to them...my aunt loved them too... so sad on Melvin 😥 just say no is corny but true drugs won't get you anywhere...don't do it plain simple IJS 😒
Keep doin what u doin
Yessss
Congratulations you played yourself, classic 😂
💯💯💯💪🏾
Any reason why Melvin Edmonds(RIP) refused to be interviewed on Unsung? Anyway, I will forever love the One World Remix of Can't Stop.
The era of there music was up.
Raz B of B2K looks just like Kieth Mitchell of the group.
7:41 The Phuk!🤔🤔
I may sound dumb for asking this, but is “Heat of the moment” about a guy who cheats on his girlfriend or wife because he got caught up in the heat of the moment and had lust for another woman? 😂😭
Actually, it's about L.A reied getting caught having sex with another woman by his wife at the time Pebbles.
@@achickfromthebricks Oh fr? That’s seriously what it’s about?
@@jonahkshackleford1129 yup LA Reid wrote about it in his book. Pebbles gave them the money to start LAFACE records, she was really rich.
He said I made a mistake just let me explain girl in the intro hahaha
Wow that’s crazy I never knew that was a fake group I really thought they was a group minus the actor husband dude playing the piano smh that’s crazy they should have been a real group
