I built a Voron to print fast and quickly found out what speed is worth at the expense of everything else. My job requires making flawless production parts. Quality is what matters. My Prusa has been grinding out good parts for years with almost no issues. I'm pretty miffed about my XL pre-order too, but holding out on judgement. The company has earned a bunch of good will, enough to last them through tough times at least.
Not being able to print an order of magnitude faster than a prusa using stock slicer profiles with still good quality sounds like a skill issue.
Will be interesting to see how the MK4 times change once the input shaper firmware is out and you can push it even more.

What "print time" means in this review video? Is that from powering on the printer and pressing "print" (so is all heating, bed levelling etc time included in these times?).

Will input shaper be only available for the MK4 and not MK3S?
Glitter filament seems to be better in hiding lines and defects than matt or glossy pla in my experience. So it could be if you would reprint it on the MK3 that the difference would not be that high.
Was going to make the same comment. I saw this when tuning my Voron just between PLA and ASA, let alone filament with fibers or other suspended elements.
As a hobbyist i stay on my Prusa XL preorder. I has a small couple of benefits over the MK4. First: Multi Toolhead for different materials (Support PETG with PLA and vice versa). Acceleration sensor for input shaping, segment build plate heating and the bigger build space. But i have to say... bigger build space is not the most needed thing. The MK4 is a great printer.

First of all, to me, Prusa makes great products, especially the Prusa Slicer is my most favourite slicer too. However, to be honest, if I want to built a printer farm for comercial use, I would compare it to Bambu Lab P1P which saves me USD400 each. I may even give the very new Crealtiy K1 a try which saves me USD500 each, or even try the bigger K1 Max and save USD100 at the same time.
I just received Bambu P1S - this thing is from another dimension/universe. When I started printing scrapper after initial calibration - my jaw dropped - it is just that fast. Great company and products! Complete 360 experience from hardware to software! Good luck!

Core xy is better
Looking at the specs the XL has all the same features of the MK4 such as 32Bit control electronics, auto levelling, new extruder design but additionally has the ability to use multiple extruders. Here in Europe the biggest problem getting products shipped is still component supplies so I can totally understand why some printers are shipping while others are stuck waiting to be shipped. While the print times are reasonably impressive for the MK4, remember as firmware improves the MK4 speed will improve further but 20% for an initial improvement is impressive.
"It's literally flawless" then shows a part with a large flaw in it.
Exchanged my XL pre-order for the MK4 and so far very happy. Don't care so much about speed but all other upgrades from MK3 are totally worth it.
If you use these printers professionally, the XL makes sense. I don't know exactly what the size of that display case is, but I'm pretty sure you can fit more parts on the XL's build plate than the Mk4's. Maybe you can print bigger parts in one go, reducing the total number of prints. Also, the XL will be a bit faster than the Mk4 (I hope so, I also have one on order).
And although the Mk4 is shipped now and you should consider it as a finished product, it's still awaiting a few tweaks in the firmware. Most important the much praised input shaping. That should make a difference. Also, over time the slicer profiles will be tweaked I guess, resulting in (small) gains overall.
I think the XL has a different MO than the MK4. I plan to use both for different things.
For me the increased bed size and multiple extruders is what I look forward to with the XL.
The MK4 will be what I will buy instead of any more MK3S+.
Exactly this🙌 I keep trying to explain this specially to the Bambu lab warriors. The XL is a large format toolchanger we can't compare it directly to small format single print head machines. Different printers for different use cases I'm still SUPER excited for my XL🤩
Nice to see the real test ! I am still thinking upgrade or not. The most important question for me is do motors make quality better in horizontal layer, like filling gaps or orverfiling them like in older machines.
Wonderful & informative video. Your perspective is important for this video because this is your business. I've had Stratasys Dimension, FlashForge, MiniBots, 16 V3 Pro & V Enders and 2 MarkedForge Onyx where I taught. Needless to say I have spent a lot of money on 3D Printers without a lot to show and nearly walked away from the tech all together. I cannot stand doing mods. I retired and started listening to smart business people like yourself and I bought into the Prusa ecosystem. I now have 7 Prusa's at my home and 6 MK's & 1 Mini. I am an industrial designer and artist. Prusa's have accelerated my design and product creation. I agree about the MK4 and I would like to get your thoughts and input once Input Shaping improves and your experience with the new extruder and hotend swaps. Great job!!!
If I purchase the Mk3s+ to the full Mk4 upgrade kit, would I be able to have left over parts to upgrade my original i3 mk2 to a mk3?
In my opinion, the main value of the Prusa XL over the Mk4 is the tool changing: there's really nothing else on the market that can print drastically different materials like the XL will be able to with its separate tool heads. If that's not important to you, then I would stick with the Mk4.
Maximum size is also a huge plus. You *can* use just one tool head but you are missing out on what it can do (out of the gate I want soluble supports for the tricky items, later multicolor and SS). The size is always there. Hopefully input shaping comes to more than the MK4.
@Broski Snowski A different material could be that filament soluble in water, it's used for support. Another advantage consists in the possibility of multicolor print without huge wasted material.
I would love to have multicolor for eletronic case, so that i'm able to print in one go all the label... Today i sprai paint the case and then i need to laser etche the surface... A lot of waste time
I would rather buy the Snapmaker J1 because it has a enclosure and can print high temp materials.
damn i want the mk4 upgrade just for the bed leveling. I hate inductive bed leveling and always wish it had touch based probing

The mark four doesn't have the input shaping in place yet. They're still working on that. So without the input shaping I wouldn't expect it to be wildly faster than a well dialed in mark three in spite of the new motors and stuff. The real test will be when input shaping comes out in new firmware in a while.

This seems like a really important point that should have been mentioned in the video. I was bummed to see that the improvement wasn't as much as advertised, and this entirely explains it.

It’s a hard sell being a bed slinger though… I ordered a P1P and an X1C on the 4th of January and got the X1C on the 11th and the P1P on the 12th. Kids and I are chuffed. I went to order the MK4 but decided against it and if I want I’ll just upgrade the MK3 we have in storage.
Honestly the mk4 would look great if it launched 3 years ago
There is nothing wrong with it, except it pisses the prusa fanboys, so take it as an added bonus I guess.
I only care about how consistent it can print a flat sidewall. The new extruder design should make this one of the only printers that can produce a wall without layer variation. This video glosses over the print results, showing them too quickly and not with lighting that hides print faults. Using two different filaments made the comparison useless. Too much time showing the printer printing. Who cares? Make a new video where you printed using the same filament and only show the results.

I sold my MK3S+ at 450. So the mk4 will be a little cheaper rather buy the upgrade without leaving me with a bunch of useless pieces. It will be also completely new. Do you know if the dc supply is new?
XL probably was overtaken by R&D for the Mk4, so they might hold it back to update components to Mk4 standards?
Would love to know how the MK4 handles TPU. On the MK3 it only started to handle TPU in a good manner after installing a Bondtech extruder.

The prusa mk3 is really good still and the mk4 is way better but most people who go for the speed is people who make big stuff. Which the prusas dont have big build plates If it had a bigger one a lot of people will of consider it even more. Also a lot of cheap printers can do pla decent or good enough for any project which means that it's better if you don't want to spend a lot on a printer and also just use the standard pla.
What filament are you using on the mk4 first print
As most people know, input shaping has not been implemented in firmware yet on the mk4. That will cut print time significantly compared to this test!

I wonder if moving to a 0.6mm nozzle would provide a solid performance upgrade for general FDM work.
Yeah I'd say its time for the .6 or .5 to become the new standard. Ever since the Arachne engine was implemented in most slicers the details you get with bigger nozzles has been more than enough for me.
Is it just me or is the shelf printed with different infill? Hence the quality difference? Looks like the mk4 isn’t bridging as far?

Should I get a Mk4 Prusa as my first 3d printer, or something else? I need to print polycarbonate (PC)...
PC will be handled fine in the MK4, you just need an enclosure. With that in mind, maybe a BambuLabs X1C will solve the issue better if you can solve the crappy adhesion problem that the X1C has.
But regardless of what you choose, for PC you will need an enclosure.

For roughly the same amount of money (Ok, probably 15% more), you can get a CoreXY printer which would halve your print time (and that's a conservative estimate). If you value your time at 25 bucks per hour (which is not a lot), you make the price difference back in a couple days of printing.
Yes, a CoreXY needs to be assembled and calibrated and so on, and so forth. But once that's done, all you need to do is print.

For the Displayglas you use different infill percentage! The squares on the mk4 are different und unincomparable.

I need one of these. My Ender 3 can do nice prints but it gives me lots of headaches.

What sort of print speed can it do? One of my old ender 3’s with a v6 on it and a copy cht nozzle easily flows at 150-180mm/s. I don’t really take any of them over that. I’d like to see a proper review of it and see how it stacks up in flow rate etc and if it’s really any better than a cheap v6 setup.
Print speed in mm/sec is relative. The real factor is maximum flow rate from the hotend and maximum acceleration where you still have good quality movements (no ring, skipping etc.) You could in theory print at 350mm/s on an Ender at 0.08mm layer height (wich gives you a 10mm3 volumetric flow rate)

We also have to note that the ability to correct resonance with input shaper is one of the big things that alwoys the MK4 to print faster at better quality. Wich is a feature that is yet to be included on creality machines out of the box

@@AustenHartley thanks for the response! A decibel comparison would be amazing. I have the mk3s in my bedroom and it is too noisy to sleep even with a paver and some foam beneath it
you are also using a carbon loaded filament on the MK4 yeah? this helps with dimensional stability and helps hide layer lines. not exactly an apple to apples comparison.
I ordered two xl first day 2021 and gave up and bought a mk4 as of an hour ago.
The Mark 4 is expensive but I must admit I'm impressed, even compared to the Mark 3.

Why would they ship this without having the input shaping the only exciting thing about this printer is it’s speed increase ??crazy
a lot of things missing. i think i heard it has calibrated input shaping from factory. just need to tune yourself if you decide the mod the print head in the future. also its quick change and pressure sensitive nozzle for auto levelling, which i it does at the start of each print for the perfect first layer every time

Why are multiple reviewers calling it the emm kay four? It's obviously the mark four. Specifically, the Prusa i3, Mark 4. Replacing the earlier version, the mark three. Looks like a nice revision with many new great features. I still prefer a Revo hotend though. But dang, by 5-6 minutes in, the "emm kay, emm kay" started to get unreasonably aggravating. :)

I think your testing could be flawed, because the different filaments, not just the color, the manufacturer too.
I think you really missed the boat on a comparison video. It would have been much more helpful if you had compared the profile print times without monkeying with the settings (edit) i.e, .20 speed on both machines. I can’t even tell what you did.
The settings are automatically different in prusa slider. If all settings were stock there would also be no point of a comparison as the stock settings are different.

Isn't the speed simply slicer defined?
If you tweak both to run at the same speed, then push them faster, does one start to produce terrible results before the other?
I have a mk3s+ and was really hoping Prusa would knock it out of the park with the MK4. I ended up getting the "other brand" (green/black) when the XL was in limbo delays and I have not looked back. I think at this point it's too little and very late. Maybe the beta firmware updates may redeem the model but I need to look at what is shipping now, not what potentially it can do.

I also have a Mk3S sitting unused almost completely for the last 2 months since I got my X1 Carbon. I have over 2400 hours on my Mk3 since December 2019 and about 400hrs on the X1 since February 2023 and I can't see any reason to go back to Prusa at this point.

Not really. Prusa is optimized for quality, the Bambu has more of a, speed matters, quality second approach. And that’s the same with every printer, the faster you go, the more sacrifice you get in quality. There’s no magic in the Bambu Labs, but (imho) much overhype

@@exen900 incorrect, my X1C prints as good if not better than the MK3 or mini+ I owned in the past and does it at light speed by comparison. Been the best printer I’ve owned thus far… like it even better than the seemecnc artemis I used to have as well. Now, time will tell regarding reliability. But, just 2 months in, no issues that weren’t self inflicted and I find myself designing a lot more things nowadays as having it in my hand can happen sooo much faster now. Plus the AMS is slick and works well. Not saying it’s perfect, but dang good.
@@guycobb3251 there are physical limitations in printing at such high speeds. I’m not denying that the quality is good, but there are differences in part strength coming to print speed. My personal biggest concern would be any issue with the kinematics on the Bambulabs, in that case, you’re f.ed. Can’t repair that epoxied parts.
@@exen900 with their massive popularity I think either Bambu will come up with a solution or third parties will. Parts are already being pumped out by third parties and I don’t see that slowing down. I also do destructive tests on the parts (no actual measurements) but making sure layers aren’t failing and the results have not been any different than what I saw from my other, slower printers.
someone buying the Prusa XL and cancelling for an MK4 was never in the market for the features that make an XL what it is, no matter how many MK4 you buy it will never replace an XL especially not if you are going for a multi tool head version.
beside this the assumption that the XL is outdated because it was revealed in November 2021 is false, everything you see on that MK4 is a direct result of the research done for the XL and exists just like this or better on the XL.
the Extruder of the MK4 is essentially a simplified version of the one for the XL.
Releasing a speed test review of this printer without mentioning that the firmware that makes it fast isn't out yet is pretty misleading. It would be a bummer if someone passed on this machine because of this review before seeing what it can honestly do.

I'm still pissed off they suddenly released the MK4 70 days after I finally had enough money to buy a MK3. Thereby reducing the value of the MK3 with $200 and the full upgrade costing $650. It's a slap in the face: my 2 month old mk3 is now already very dated and worth much less. They should have announced it, like they did with the XL.
Yeah thats definitely unfortunate timing. MK3 is still a powerhouse but I get that!

@@CamilleDeveveraux which other printer is as reliable and maintainable at this price point? The bambulab ones are closed source, so they'll become worthless when bambulab drops support. Most other printers I found require a lot more tuning and maintenance. As said, print farms use Prusa for a reason.
@@jhbonarius Qidi Max is a great contender and is much more open than Bambu. Qidi has numerous quality models and excellent support. For another $299 over the Max 4 you can get a fully enclosed, actively heated and circulated QiDi Max 3 running Klipper, core XY config, resonance compensation, input shaping from the moment you own it, dual hot ends with 1 capable of 350 deg C for ability to print any material available, 325x325x325 build volume, built in active HEPA filtration, and extremely rigid, low weight carbon head assembly with speeds up to 600 mm/s and 220 mm/s typical for PLA at high quality.
Oh yeah it's also 64 bit with a full color touch LCD display, a 1 GHz dual core processor, and I think 4 GB RAM (not certain).
Now do you understand why people say Prusa is dated?
12:05 what are you smoking? the XL is far more advanced. the MK4 Nextruder is a stripped down version of the one on the XL, and the XL is based on CoreXY, which has potential for faster speeds, AND the XL supports multiple heads

07:27 What? The print finish on on the red part has nothing to do with the bed not being level. The red one was printed too hot (or lack of cooling). Besides, the comparisons are skewed because you're using two different filaments. Anyway, you've convinced me to stick with my Mk3s. I can't see any point in buying a Mk4. The elephant in the room in the Bambu X1 Carbon. Prusa need to up their game more than this.

@@AustenHartleyBambu is reliable. P1P and x1 carbon owner. I have 5 carbons and 10 p1p’s. I log more than 2,000 hours a month on the printers and have only had to change ONE filament cutter due to printing ca12 filament. They are very reliable.
And where are their tool changers? This obsession with speed is getting ridiculous… there’s a reason the MK3 has been used as a workhorse in business they are reliable and the printed parts are also reliable. The faster you go the higher the failure rate and the weaker the printed parts. It depends on your needs but one printer isn’t “inherently better” than the other it depends on the needs. The P1P hasn’t been out long enough to determine reliability or long term maintenance. So many assumptions and misinformation out there.
@Broski Snowski much less open sourced? It’s been confirmed it’s being open sourced once it’s fully launched - To give Prusa time to make sure clone makers don’t start causing issues with parts in their supply chain. We need production final firmware to see “how fast it is” but it’s not meant to be the fastest printer out there. It’s meant to do a job and do it well and that mean’s compromising speed. Not saying this comment is levelled at you but people think they can have it all, great finish with multi material - speed - strong parts. It doesn’t work like that just the same as good fast cheap… There is always compromise somewhere. I’m not happy with the proprietary bambu platform for repairs - so won’t go near it for that reason, it’s a new company with a new product which has yet to be battle proven like Prusa or dare I say creality.

MK is short for Mark. So the correct pronunciation is Mark 3 and Mark 4. You'd think owners of a MK3 and MK4 would know this.

Very disappointed in prusa to push the printer out and not have the input shaper firmware on the printer. Let’s just push the printer out the door when it’s not ready and why not work on getting peoples pre orders out the door for the xl which is been going on for a year and a half. I think this is a new trend for manufacturers to push products out the door when they are not ready. The way the printers sits now 31 min benchy and the mk3s is 37 min not a game changer in my eyes.
I agree with part of this.. However after seeing and using the machine I feel ok about it. The new hardware seems like it will support the software upgrades very well
@@AustenHartley I’m not disagreeing with the hardware not supporting the software it’s the part of releasing something that should of been ready to go out of the box and not have to wait for beta firmware to use it at its full potential.
Prusa always stated that speed is not on top of their priority list. I find it fair to release a product with one unfinished feature, rather than 1) releasing a product with 5 unfinished features or 2) having to wait even longer just to have a feature implemented that isn't really relevant in the end (though this depends on people's needs of course).
They stated they worked on the MK4 for several years, probably even started before starting to work on the XL, so I think accusing them of "pushing an unready product" is not really fair.
Also, about the XL, it was never about them not putting enough work into it, but about a huge amount of parts not being available. At the same time, development of the MK4 went on and they were able to stockpile parts to make a big release and ship immediately. I think this is working out pretty well.
Very much looking forward to that input shaping firmware and the 18 minute Benchy! If everything goes well with the MK4 and whatever they're planning for the XL and future machines, I think Prusa will stay at the top of their game.
Looks to me that Prusa are wetting their pants about the competition from Bambu Labs and soon to ship Creality K1....so they rushed to ship Mk4 when development is not complete.
I ordered my P1P and it was delivered in 2 days. The speed it prints is just amazing. Time will tell, but, very impressed so far. ......I have had PRUSA machines for years and no issues,but, the game has really changed now.
This printer is way too expensive for what it is. Compare it to Bambu lab or Ankermake this just doesn't make any sense to buy.
Even the kit version is more expensive than my M5 and I don't see a single thing that has any added value. Maybe the noise levels.
I'd rather buy a full product that I can setup in 10 minutes and know it will work reliably rather than spend hours assembling a more expensive diy kit just for the sake of learning how to troubleshoot every single part of it if/when it stops working.

Why do you say only 21 minutes faster? Only? That is 17.5% faster and across 100 hours of printing, that is 17.5 hours. Thats quite a bit of savings, seeing as 100 hours really isnt even that much time in the grand scheme of things. A large 100 hour print could be done nearly an entire day quicker.
It is quite a bit for enthusiasts and commercial printers. I don’t think hobbyists will notice much of a difference in the speed when it comes to occasional printing.
Is a small difference vs the competiton (bambu x1c or creality k1)
It's "only" because prusa's own material is claiming "a decrease in print time by up to 70% compared to MK3.", also you can buy a bambu labs x1 for the same price which is actually fast and has an enclosed chamber and more.

The MK4 is overpriced and unjustified for the same old tired design of the Prusa.
What a crap printer! $1100 for a small bed slinger with a volume of 250 x 210 x 220 mm. If this 3D printer came out in 2017, it would still be old and uninnovative. This is shameful from Prusa for releasing it in 2023. Let's just look at what you get from Bambu lab for the same money, modern and innovative CoreXY, multicolor. New Creality k1 Max for example, 300x300x300mm, lidar, 600mm speed, klipper, enclosure, open-source, big touch screen... Prusa should be banned by law and punished because they rob people.

Bambu is a chinese company patenting open source design solutions for themself damaging with that the whole 3d printing community. The P1P and the X1C are nice printers but I can now support a company with this kind of ideology (I mean patenting open source stuff developed by someone else).
So would rather buy an MK4 Kit over a bambu.
Also, I am a hobbyist. For me it is good that I can repair if someone fails. Good luck to that with a Bambu.

I'm just aware how much effort Prusa puts to developement, and how much they gave to the 3d printing community. Thats why I own a Mini. Also no hard feelings for the Creality, I have an Ender 3, which is great. But if I can chose which to use, I tend to go with the Prusa Mini, just because it is so much hassle free and easy to use compared to the Creality. I dont mind the open design, because I mostly print PLA and PETG.
And I like that there are available tuned profiles for it, so I dont need to tweak settings as I have to with the Creality. Also, as I mentioned earlyer, if something fails, it is not a problem as with the Bambu.
I have to admit, Bambulab is really impressive, they made great printers. I jist dont like their ideology. For bigger printfarms I guess they make sense, but for me to my flat, I appreciate a lot more a quieter Prusa, which prints reliably all the time. So technically (at least for now it looks like that) there is no problem with the Bambu. But I personally dont mind paying Prusa a bit more for what they are doing.
And one more thing, I was just thinking, how much dos an MK4 bed weight, and how much does the extruder assembly weight. I have a feeling that there is not so much difference. I understand that Core XY has also the benefit of not mooving the model too fast, but we will see the full potential of the MK4 after the Imput shaper and pressure advance will be enabled. I have a feeling that it is going to be almost as fast as the Bambu, maybe 70% of its speed, with nice print quality and high reliability.
But we will see.
Anyway, I'm glad that you are enjoying your Bambu, have a lot hassle free print hours with a lot of nice models :)

what a load of rubbish, its a 3d printed 3D printer that isn't even a core xy at the heart, so never really going to achieve high speed at quality and ps over priced
the mk4 hotend is comparable to a v6. the mk4 CANT be "faster" if it has the same exact bottleneck. neither the mk3 nor mk4 were limited by motor speed. you're going to be flow restricted by the hotends. until a high flow hotend comes out, they have the exact same theoretical maximum "speeds". the motion speed is only going to dictate the width/height resolution at which you hit max flow. "motion speed" isnt a sole determinant factor, as flow is width x height x speed, and you can produce a part faster while physically moving slower if you use a different resolution just to demonstrate this.... any way you cut it, the bambu is theoretically 2-3x faster until prusa drops a higher flow hotend, period. same with the new qidi 3 series. acceleration induced resonance will gate the motion speed you can run at before ringing by limiting the distance you need to travel to hit max speed. the motors and drivers themselves and how much power you run through them will determine how fast you can move without losing steps, and thats extremely easily extended by switching from 24-48v which shifts the torque shelf dramaticaly further right. the old motors were not the problem for this. input shaper will reduce ringing at the expense of smoothing your parts and rounding corners. input shaping on the prusa is not available yet. the mk4 switching from 8 to 10 mm rods will theoretically help with x axis resonance by making the gantry mounts slightly stiffer. any profile that exists on the mk4 right now you can also just run on a mk3. its a bunch of marketing nonsense with some nicer user experience. its not actualy faster. it CANT be "faster". im not talking about speed before step loss on the motors as faster, im talking about net part production speed. comparing profiles without comparing flow, and without comparing max flow is useless. neither prusa profile is anywhere near living near flowmax.
if you want to compare printers like for like, rate the hotend max flow with a jewelers scale thats 3 decimals, the extruder force, the input shaper charts, the max accel and max speeds before the motors lose steps. anything else is slicer nonsense and fungible. or checkbox matrix of user QOL features.
Wtf really it doesn't cost it money at all, no any new technologies, printed parts and such low speed, Bambu much better choise i wana spent 1.5k$
Glad to see you buy from an innovator and not a company like Creality that steals all their IP.
