- Part Laurel & Hardy, part satire, full WTF. This parody movie has been locked away since its release in 1972. Written and directed by the great Bob Einstein, this film ruffled the feathers of Nixon himself. Here's the full story how.

AROOOOOOO!
Just ask The Jonas Brothers!😂💯
I don't see any representation of Agnew I'm triggered
@@brucesmith8401 He was the sentient body that carried Nixon's head.
Also, "triggered" as a joke isn't funny, and is actually a real thing people with PTSD go through. Thank you.
@@daniexists6 Omg give me a break. People use that all the time. I'm starting to get really fed up with how LITERALLY EVERYTHING offends you people. I think that is pushing it too far. 🤦🏼♀️
Hearing Oliver Hardy’s voice coming out of Richard Nixon is an extremely surreal experience
3:25 - I keep forgetting that there was a time in history where Steve Martin did not have white hair
Fun fact: Another Nice Mess was Martini’s feature film debut
Very briefly
Me too!
A flop
A time when Steve Martin didn't have white hair? Impossible! Must be CGI!!!
Honestly, the biggest problem with this movie is it would constantly remind me of how great laurel and hardy are and just make me want to watch laurel and hardy
If this *had* been a TV show it'd be really ahead of its time.
You mean an original “That’s My Bush”?
It WAS really ahead of its time. Literally no movie had ever lampooned a sitting President.
Spitting image well worth watching
Bloody hell their impressions are very good in fairness. I suppose it's funniest thing to think about is Nixon disliked it so much.
Apparently this is Steve Martin's film debut.
We all start somewhere.
@@Moonbeam143 Clint Eastwood's debut was in The From The Black Lagoon 2,where he played a lab assistant who put a rat in his pocket.
@@Moonbeam143 Steve McQueen started out playing a teenager trying to warn his town about The Blob.
@@EmeraldLavigne Eastwood was also in the giant ant movie Them! (Punctuation included in the title).
@@doctorthirteen5727 Hello Jodie 👋.
Fun Fact: Bob Einstein is the older brother of Albert Brooks.
He was, RIP Funkhouser
Who had to change his second name when he chose a stage name, for obvious reasons. Though it'd be funny to have to go "not _THAT_ Albert Einstein" every time he was introduced to new people
Bob Einstein though, what a comedic genius. RIP. He seemed to always have some of the best improvised lines of anybody in Curb. I loved him. And I'm so sad he's gone. I thought that it'd be really hard to continue on the show without him, but then Larry did put out a new season and it turned out well. But yeah it could have been even better if Bob had still been with us.
Yes. Bob and Albert Einstein.
Crazy
He was also the father of a radio comedian who are used to work with Joe Penner
Now, if you want to watch a sitting president fall on his face while walking up the stairs, you can just watch the news.
I was 14 when this came out. My buddy saw it and told me all about it. I finally looked it up on CZcams and watched the whole thing. And yeah, what you said...
I love Laurel and Hardy and this doesn't do them justice. This deserves to be forgotten.
An idea for future Forgotten Failures topics - the Muppet Show pilot "Sex and Violence", the 60s movie "Skidoo", or the 80s movie "Penn and Teller Get Killed"
Oh GOD I've tried to watch Skidoo. It's amazing how a film featuring a Timothy Leary cameo got LSD so wrong. But at least we got the best ending credits song ever -- courtesy of Harry Nilsson.
@@thedrewdog Skidoo got a very old Groucho Marx to experiment with Acid.
Skidoo omg
YES
All 3 of those are wonderful choices.
“Here’s to Nixon and Agnew, they are the stars of the stage and screen, not since Laurel and Hardy have I laughed so hard Iv screamed”
-Phil Ochs in his song “ten cents a coup”
Super Dave Osborne's cartoon show from the late 80's or early 90's was my intro to Bob. I have had a special place in my heart for him ever since. Neat info thanks for all the great videos.
They should've made them keep their "real" voices, meaning a Nixon impression not a Laurel one. Would've felt like less of a re-hash.
I saw this twice in 1972, and early crowds loved it. It then disappeared. While I have a copy, it was a joy to watch your video.
I'd imagine that part of the reason it disappeared is how Nixon ended up resigning in disgrace, so that this film's portrayal of him as a goofball probably came off as inappropriately lighthearted.
I love how you forgot to mention the fact that Bob Einstein was also Super Dave Osborne (his most iconic role)
Huh... Guess I'm the only on e in this thread who knew that. Hmmkay, stop what you're doing and look up Super Dave, right now! You can thank me later)
Ok, this is the first time you’ve spotlighted something I had no idea about. Most of your stuff I’ve seen or at least heard about but this was entirely new. Fascinating subject on all fronts, great job.
I've never heard of this movie and I remember Rich Little being really popular back in the day. Thanks for bringing it to my attention.
he even almost played in The Other Side of the Wind
Why did the thumbnail make me think Richard Nixon actually did a movie that satirized himself?! Lmfao
He did, it was his life.
Well he did in audio form.
@@davidjames579 Unfortunately, he cut out most of the good bits of that recording. Shame.
Thanks, Joe. Never heard of this film and it doesn't look like I missed much. Except, as you pointed out, for the careful and respectful impressions of The Boys. But as others have pointed out, that just makes me want to watch some real Laurel & Hardy.
I am one of the very few that actually saw this film in the theater when I was a teenager. And I've only come across two other people in my life that have seen this film when it was originally released.
I love your content! So digestible and well-paced.
Love your videos my guy, keep it up.
I'm very surprised Hats off entertainment doesnt have much more subscribers. He's amazing what he does
I grew up in the 80s. Man, I got sick of listening to writers and artist from the 70s whining about President Nixon. That and something called 'Nam', whatever the hell that is. :)
Now imagine that but multiplied by a thousand and that was the last 4 years. Unbearable really, which is probably a big reason why people elected that senile fart in the end.
@@gocsa Except it makes perfect sense for people to be complaining about an incumbent President. But if you're a young person in the 80s hearing an older person rant about Nixon, then that person might as well have been ranting about FDR or Eisenhower for all you'd know or care.
"I'm not a crook" I'm a an interested political and social satire fan. Another informative and entertaining video. Stay safe and keep it up!
"Portrayed as Laurel and Hardy"
Ahh, so they had some class :D
This channel is so undersubbed. Good work as always, dude!
What I'm surprised you didn't mention is according to IMDB, this was Steve Martin's debut film
I tried to find him, but couldn’t pinpoint him exactly, given the poor quality of the film.
I think you’re my new favourite channel.
"There's no one higher than the President"....I think the film's production team have him beat.
I was either sick or intoxicated when I first watched this video and so it has a fever dream kind of memory for me. I’m back for more.
as someone who voraciouly consumes old school hollywood and as a fan of the smothers brothers and laurel and hardy im dumbfounded that ive never heard of this!! thank you for the review!
Anyone remember "That's My Bush"? That was a great show.
I thought of the same thing popped in my head
The parallels between the two are clear. Whereas the Smothers Brothers’ take on Nixon was a nod to old-fashioned comedy, the creators of South Park’s take on Bush was a strictly formula domestic sitcom.
Anyone expecting biting satire from either is bound to be disappointed.
@@fishflake1209 Matt Stone and Trey Parker made that? Huh. I learned something new today.
Love that show! "Stupid like an armored fox!"
I also remember the cartoon "Lil' Bush" on Comedy Central
This is about as weird as Heil Honey I'm Home
Nah it's not that weird, this film was a failure but it wasn't made to be a failure, Heil Honey I'm Home was made to fail
@@nickrustyson8124 both are weird political mistakes to me, but eh. you're right.
Yeah, but unlike Heil honey I'm home, this is actually funny.
They're weird for different reasons. Nixon and Agnew as Laurel and Hardy is a weird idea that could have worked with a better production behind it. Hitler and Braun as a 50's sitcom couple is an idea that nobody could salvage.
Damn I didn’t know Bob Einstein had passed... my brothers and I always got a kick out of his character in the Ocean’s movies, even tho it wasn’t strictly comedy his scenes with Matt Damon always made us laugh
einstein is godam super dave osbourne , a legend!!
He was Albert Brooks' brother, believe it or not.
But where does he get his ideas from?
Considering he was essentially a parody of Evel Knievel, that character had an amazingly long life - far outlasting the daredevil stuntman craze by decades.
I was just thinking he really sounded like Super Dave! Mind blown.
RIP. He was the best recurring character on Curb. Always had the best lines (and because Curb is all improvised, that means he was just naturally a comedic genius). So sad he's gone now
I think most people would know Bob Einstein as “Super Dave Osborne”! I grew up watching Super Dave on tv, he was like a parody of Evil Knievel, a stuntman but his stunts would always end with him crashing, blowing up, or something else disastrously and funny!
Super Dave was also fun in Arrested Development
This looks truly interesting.
That looks quite good!
With all the talent behind the film it’s too bad that it couldn’t have been better.
It seems a lot of kids only know about Bob Einstein (aka Super Dave Osborne) from Curb and that one time he was on Norm's show. You should talk about his HBO series, it's one of the best examples of "sports comedy" there is but hardly anyone mentions it these days. It was just so strange, there's really never been another show like it.
You got to give Rich Little for the impression. He does a very good impression of that horrible man Nixon! And a funny one too! And also my favourite Johnny Carson!
Well this is another nice video you’ve created for us and I encourage others to watch it!
3:28 Holy crap that’s Steve Martin!
I would love to see you do some more obsure sitcoms
Herb Voland is probably best known as Colonel Clayton on MASH. I never knew he was so good at slapstick. I may need to see this thing just to see how it all comes out.
After all, Rich Little always did a great Richard Nixon. When he did his version of A Christmas Carol, he cast Nixon as Jacob Marley: "And when the bell tone has ceased to vibrate, LOOK TO SEE ME NO MORE!! Unless, of course, I need some money. Then, I'll probably write another book or appear on another talk show!"
You can tell the narrator here is younger than "GenX". He talks about Bob Einstein and doesn't even bring up Einstein's "Super Dave" character that brought him huge fame in the 1980s. Also doesn't mention that he is the brother of comedian and filmmaker, Albert Brooks.
The actual Laurel and Hardy line is "another *fine* mess". I wonder why they changed that one word.
No, they had a movie called "Another Fine Mess", but the quote that was actually said many times was "this is another nice mess you've gotten me into".
In honor of Inauguration Day in January for forgotten failures, might I suggest The Brady Bunch in The White House?
Super Dave!!!
This is how the interview will be reviewed in the future
He got the Oliver Hardy voice bang on
They're really sockin' it to that Spiro Agnew guy. He must work there or something.
I can only assume that Herb Voland understood the intended humor, but, in any case, I think he's a good sport to go along with it.
Another great video! I have a feeling you will be doing the film STOOGEMANIA starring Josh Mostel at some point.
I don’t have the strength ....yet.
Would love to see you do an episode all about Super Dave
Fascinating
For some reason I saw this when it came out in a Westwood, Ca theater. I think it was the opening movie for the feature film , which I can't remember.AT the time I thought i was pretty funny. For years I was trying to hunt down the name of the movie. Thanks to the net, it's easily found.
Very interesting! I'd like to know how the copy on CZcams got there??
Super Dave was an ICON.
Wait wait. Super Dave Osborn wrote this?! Man. Hollywood was once a gleaming masterpiece of talent just oozing.
Now it just sort of...oozes.
Bob Einstein on the Norm Macdonald show is amazing
1:00 When I saw the sign on the desk that says "The Messiah" I immediately thought of the current president (and what he and his followers think of him) and the many other parallels he has with Nixon.
That song in the movie is actually great though
I actually like the songs from this! Great late 60s/early 70s folk-pop protest music.
Also I looked up the hand-drawn poster for this movie and I swear it looked like it was drawn just as quickly as a regular political cartoon.
Presidents falling up stairs is hilarious!
A lot of politicians fail upward. One specific politician falls upward too.
Everything finally made sense when you said Bob Einstein wrote it
For those of us of a certain age, Bob Einstein was also Super Dave Osborne.
Whatever happened to Rich Little? He was the best impressionist! I was a big fan of Super Dave too!
He never came up with new material. He just kept on doing Nixon after he resigned and other dated routines, and he faded away.
@@crixxxxxxxxx yeah partially. I think the other reason is that celebrity’s just don’t have unique personalities like they used to. Its like everything has become a sausage machine of derivative material that’s been rehashed.
Rich Little got old and outta touch.
@@jeenkzk5919 Rich Little is still going strong, he was featured on CBS Sunday Morning a few months ago........Of course "strong" means a Vegas act and rarely gets invited on today's talk shows.
I bet this would have raked millions in the box office...if released.
Rich Little is a comedy legend!!!!!!
I wonder if that scene where the VP flicks the finger is where the idea came from for the Bean movie.
4k restoration of this masterpiece when
And now: the ultimate fever dream
I remember the MAD Magazine cover with Nixon and Agnew in the style of The Sting poster with Newman and Redford.
I always enjoyed Rich Little. My junior high school's library had one of his early albums. He was doing an impression of Canadian prime minister John Diefenbaker. The voice was great. The hurmour? Not so much.
Reminds of that Monty Python sketch with Queen Victoria pulling pranks on Gladstone.
He'll always be Super Dave Osborne!
Never heard of this before. Interestingly in the 1990s a UK satirical show had a sketch where then Prime Minister John Major and Chancellor of the Exchequer Ken Clarke were presented as Stan and Ollie.
Was that Spitting Image?
@@davidjames579 No it was John Bird and John Fortune on Rory Bremner's show. (Although both of them wrote for SI at times so they may have done it there as well)
Hilarious 😂
Anyone remember "Heil Honey, I'm Home!"?
Please do this for Forgotten Failures.
I remember there was an American version that aired on Nick at Nite. At the time it was the only original program on Nick at Nite (they only played syndicated classic programs). It was called “Hi Honey I’m home” and it was a parody of what happened if a 1950s family from a television show had to live in the real world. This was years before the Brady bunch movie ripped it off. It wasn’t bad
@@Maniac536 Very different show.
@@Maniac536 No Heil Honey, not Hi Honey. It's a British sitcom made to seem like an American sitcom with Hitler and Eva Braun as the leads, and their neibours being Jewish. 'Hijinks' ensure.
@@davidjames579 Who greenlit that?
@@ianfinrir8724 It was on a Satellite channel with very low viewing figures. It's rumoured they created the show purely for publicity. It certainly got in all the newspapers at the time (early 90's). The writer defended it by saying it's not a spoof of Nazi-ism, but of American sitcoms of the 50's and how they would embrace any idea, no matter how stupid. The idea was to push this concept as far as possible, while staying as a silly sitcom. .
Love me some Super Dave Osbourne the Professional Stuntman! ;)
You should do a video on the Super Dave tv show!
I'm surprised you didn't mention that it was Steve Martin's first movie.
Damn, imagine a president being so fragile that he got offended over comedians satirizing him.
It's too bad someone like Carl Riener wasn't brought on board to help gel it together.
I actually saw this in a theatre when I was a kid...
I will always remember Einstein as Super Dave Osborne.
Having seen this and looking at the time it was released, it feels more like a political art statement than concerning itself with being an actual movie. For that, I can appreciate it.
I'm sorry, but this looks HILARIOUS. We need one today.
Can't wait for a the Forgotten Failures video about "The Comey Rule" (2020)
@@BaranoffIsaac
Only a moron would find this funny. ;)
Pretty much every comedy film related to specific Presidents is going to be a forgotten failure, since they're usually rushed and quickly become dated.
Wow. This is cool. Remember when Americans were skeptical of ALL politicians? And "Super Dave"/Bob Einstein's brother was/is (name change!) the funny Albert Brooks. Real name Albert Einstein. Imagine having that burden! Ha!
Yep. And that one time Americans don't have a politician as President and people lose their minds.
@@jamesbond9975 Last couple of months when I go into a place of business and they ask my name for my order, I reply "Bond...James Bond". Never fails to get a chuckle. EVERY one knows Bond! Thank you, Connery.
Modern day version of this (kinda) is our cartoon president
Anyone else know Bob Einstein from his role as Super Dave Osborne?
And of course, the best and funniest Nixon political riffing would come decades later through Futurama. Especially Billy West giving him a Werewolf howl for some reason.
I identified him as Super Dave so much I always found it weird to see him act normal in other roles. Then again, he did have that short lived cartoon series I was a fan of when I was a kid. Had the one episode they released on VHS and watched the hell out of it. Toon Disney had it for a while, but they always cut out his live action stunt at the ending.
I miss Super Dave Osborne
