What car would you pick? Let us know!
Beautiful RX8
BOTH, Having trouble deciding what one to get first. -Or maybe get a ND Miata instead. 2.5 Swap into a NC also seems pretty badass.
The Miata earned that one. Yet still, I wonder how a turboed and/or ported 8 would perform.
@@mannishboy17 can confirm. Buddy has a 2.5 swapped NC1 and it's fucking amazing. 245 Re71rs, rpf1s, MeisterR coils, swaybars(forget which brand) and rx8 brakes. It's almost unfair how capable it is. It also only weighed 2450( lighter than a Mazdaspeed Miata)
I take the miata cuz I own one. Worked at Mazda. Always had rx8s coming in on tow trucks like 3 at a time due to issues. The rotary is a... Finicky little devil. Never owned one so I'm just going by what I see and hear!
I've waited half a decade for a video like this
Miata wins
We are happy to be the ones to provide it! :)
I bought a 2009 RX-8 R3 early this year and I love it! The racing suspension and Racaro seats are amazing. I have AEM cold air intake, and the Torex 304 SS header and performance exhaust on it. I will never go back to pistons after driving this amazing rotary.
Awesome Brian! The R3s are really cool cars and will always hold a value. Congratulations on the purchase!
@@TheSlipAngle Let's us bet on the price of the barrel
@brianduncan8276 Do you still have your R3? How's it holding up?
@@magicwaffl3z It's still running great. I love driving it. Do you have one?
@@brianduncan8276 nah, currently a miata owner but dabbling with the idea of getting a rotary. A nice 2012 R3 with 95k miles just went up for sale near me. So... the temptation is there. Lol
looks like the RX8 needed a bit more than the 50 hp and a set of stickier tires to make up that 700 lbs.
Actually, since it seemed pretty close and he was having a real hard time with sliding around, would be interesting to see this match up again with two things done ... same compound tires and a non destructive, non visual diet where possible to cut back a few pounds.
The science lover in me though, wished you would have switched cars up after switching leads as well. There are always discrepancies in drivers, no matter how similarly skilled and experienced ;)
u really do have the best sounding miata, dem ITBs, reminds me of hill climb videos when cars are hauling ass towards the camera and u get that nice throaty ITB sound
Why you thank you Sir 👍
Thanks for putting these videos together. This deep technical stuff may never be "mainstream" but you guys are filling a niche that is lacking for content. Much appreciated.
Thanks! This is exactly what we are going for!
Love the videos you guys are putting out, remains me of best motoring/hot versions videos touge battle. I would love to have my miata featured in your videos. 👍👍
Thanks Edwin! We all love best motoring/hot version so that means a lot! Shoot us an email at slipanglemedia@gmail with some details about your car and we can talk about having it featured!
Thank you Edwin! Definitely send us a run down of your car 👍
You talked about power an how it helps in a straight line but less weight wins everywhere. I agree. I come from a muscle car background having owned 69 Mach 1 mustang and 454 Chevrolet. Miata is always the answer!
"some TQ" lmao!
LOL
The video gets recommended to me by youtube. The no bullshit intro kept me going, and the straight forward video made me attached. Subbed!
Keep up the great videos guys!!
Excellent video guys!
The RX-8 is so tail happy :D
RX-8 all the way, since i own one haha
I may have set her up a little on the loose side for easier hooning on my daily commute ;)
I'd like to see the rematch where the rx8 doesn't spend more than that half second sliding its tail. If it's capable of that I haven't tried to race in mine anywhere yet untill I finish the preventative upgrades.
I think I am more used to it than Ryan was. If you watch The Slip Angle episode on it which we shot the same day, I was able to keep the car from sliding around during the hot laps.
Nice, I was properly entertained!
Never been crazy about any rx8 but man that one looks really nice
Still watching this wondering how the fuck you guys don’t have more subscribers ... this video is so well put together
Love this video.. thanks for posting.. I’m wondering if that driver has ever driven an rx8 before?
This is so awesome! i have a 99 NB miata too!
Thank you! Tell us about your NB!
@@TheSlipAngle I purchased it in July so haven't had alot of time for mods. I've installed Tein Street advanced Z coilovers and getting some sticky rubber for it soon. Still deciding which wheels to go with but so far it's an amazing car.
Regarding the side seal temp issue do you think the Renesis would be fine with the occasional track day consisting of 20 minute sessions?
I am asking because I need a new daily next year (I am currently walking to work, so mpg is not that big of a deal.) and I'd like to do the occasional trackday with it.
That was such a fun video! I knew the MX5 had the edge because of its lighter weight. Makes me wanna go driving my 8 though! Also I'd love to visit Lime Rock. :)
Thank you Justin! We are glad you enjoyed this! :)
Guys, great video, your camera work is really coming on! Really interesting line up too. Now 13b REW swap an RX8 for the love of god hahaha.
Thanks!
Thanks buddy!
Id love to see a road review of the rx8.. actually id just like to see more road reviews
3 years ago I've watched this video and decided to get MX-5, even though RX-8 was my first idea. Some time later, I own both, and I love both. Amazing cars to time attack and hoon on the streets at night.
Right on brother!
I’ve owned an NA Eunos Roadster and now an RX8 and would agree with everything you said , I couldn’t choose between them, but on this particular course I think it favours the Miata.
Where did u get the MX5 backlight?
Thanx to you I got a rx8 s2. "My family car" my kids n I love it. I think you need a 4.7 final?
Awesome! S2's are great. They made a lot of nice little upgrades to them. I've considered picking up a 4.7 diff 👍
Would you like to do a ND miata review on snow tires this winter? 😁
Man that was awesome footage. The weight advantage was a good part of your NB's victory but the tires play a big part too. You can see the rx8 struggling for grip in many places of the track where the NB was glued. But as a battle of run what ya brung it was awesome lol. Keep pumping out these videos!
haha yeah those "for fun" tires didn't help rx-8 and also tight track.
Thank you! I'd blame some of the extra sliding in the RX-8 on Ryan just being lazy behind the wheel :P
The Slip Angle would LOVE to see you in the RX-8 on the next video. Such a fun little video. Miatas are so beautiful on the track. But I think the RX-8 has some great potential. Thanks for the upload.
👍👍👍
This I've been waiting to see!
I hope we didn't disappoint :)
@@DriveItRyan Hell no! What I want to see now is the same battle with GQ in the RX8. He dailys it LOL! I have so much optimism for the RX8.
@@Kamal-sj7it The RX-8 is an awesome platform. It could probably manage 400-500 whp without becoming a joke. The chassis is that good.
With an LS swap? 😁
Yeah, the engine builder I worked with said the Renesis can handle 10 to 12 psi and still be considered reliable. Honestly I'd consider building something with 4 to 5 psi. More juice and maintain reliability. If I can make a manifold that will facilitate a bottom mount turbo, a cheap but reliable eBay turbo might be an option for me.
Don't tell anyone at the rx8club. They might flame me. lol
LOL. I think 10-12 psi with good tuning would be fine also. The tuning is what matters the most. 4-5 psi with a bad tune can still kill the motor. I think the chassis would handle just about any powertrain you throw in it. It's just such a damn good chassis and barely anyone knows about it.
I choose an Rx-8 about 11 years ago. It handles well on snow too and has enough grip to get up a slippery hill and its an absolute blast fighting it up steep, bendy slopes, steering almost only with the gas pedal,... With my skill, where i live, i really don't have any use for more power. the longest straight within a 15 km radius is about 150m long and bumpy like a teenagers face.
What’s the point of having a fast car if u can’t pick up all the honies that come with it. That’s why I pick the Rx-8
Wise words! LOL
If you want to pick up honies, walk around a park with a dog!
I would like to know in your opinion what (top 5) modifications make the biggest impact to performance of the Miata. Great videos guys
Miata all the way. Would be diff. On the RX7 :)
I always recommend driving at a local autocross or track-day before modifying a car so you can see exactly where your car is lacking before choosing modifications. IMO If you are coming from a completely unmodified Miata I would say the top 5 are: Light wheels, sticky tires, Torsen diff (if you don't already have one), Coilovers (or a good set of springs & shocks) & swaybars. Power adders like a Turbo, Supercharger or ITBs are always fun but can get very expensive and more supporting mods are necessary.
It's a home advantage and a short course the miata has it in the bag 👌
mod list for each car?
For sure the Miata.
Had it been an FC RX7, that might be a bit harder
Just a suggestion...myb you guys are already planning it but I think intrdoucing some FWD action would be cool...like a tuned Eg6 civic or something :) Great video tho! :) pure engine sound :D
I agree with you! I really want to see how some of the more popular FWD hot hatches/sedans compare to these FR cars
This is only the beginning! I'd like to see how they compare as well.
Please give the MPG results. Is a great info to share with us, your CZcams buddies!
What performance mods are done to the 8? The engine note sounds perfect
Intake, Header, Exhaust, Mazda Edit, a little weight reduction and coilovers.
The Rx8 isn’t making 232whp. At the flywheel maybe, but it’s rare for a factory Renesis to break 200whp, with your setup it might being a low mile engine, but just pointing out that flaw in the video. Looking forward to watiching the rest of the video after typing this
Yes this was a typo, it was supposed to be crank horsepower. Sorry about that!
We talked about this in another comment from versus4582, whp was a typo and should have been bhp
Late night 1:00 AM on a work night final review :p
That ITB Miata look so composed like it's at home
interesting how the hp to weight ratios make these cars so even ;)
would've liked to see you guys switch drivers but looked like you both had a ton of fun
I like the refreshed NC a bit better and still not sure on my overall feeling on the ND looks. Test drove an NC back in the day and enjoyed it. If I was going for a 2 seater, there are others I would get first though, but that is a different discussion entirely.
I agree with you about the face-lifted NC. They get a bad name because they are a bit heavier than the other generations but they are a better built car for sure. If I was to daily a Miata it would definitely be a PRHT Face-Lift NC, especially at the price they're going for now.
I think NCs are awesome. They are kind of whatever stock, but with some suspension and engine tuning they can be a real weapon. They are a big step up in terms of chassis and interior from the NAs and NBs.
Another great video. Looked like a close call there. The miata with its light wieght really put down some fast laps. The rx8 is fast but seemed to lack grip and needs a larger track to take advantage of its high reving engine. I would love to see a rx8 motor in a miata. Either way lets show our support for this channel and spread the word. Good job guys. Loving these vids!!!!!
Thanks! I also would love to see the Renesis engine in a Miata *Hint Quinn
PPort 13b for Miata ;)
Oh ya!!
I would guess trash tires on the RX-8, mine isn't that bad, even with my lack of skill... Tires are a huge difference!
Even on a bicycle I went from skidding in crits on mild turns on dry pavement to being able to recover from over 60 degree turns in the wet going from crappy tires to race slicks. After that, I decided, "hey, maybe I shouldn't run those $5 junkyard tires on my cars if I'm doing more than grocery shopping...", and sure enough, good tires will keep on gripping!

Hard to say both cars are awesome in its own unique build quality.
Do you guys have a top gear style leader board for the best lap times??? I would love to see how all of these cars stack up against each other.
Check in the video description ;)
We plan on listing all the tested cars with data on our website which is currently under development.
You guys should also take the battle on the large track to showcase both scenarios.
$$$ unfortunately. What are your guy's thoughts on a patreon to fund that sort of thing?
@@TheSlipAngle Go for it!
How's the new 6 speed on the track and does it make you quicker or slower? I would assume since it's short geared, with a tight track it would make you slower
It definitely gave the car a little more pep in the lower RPMs but on
this track it now requires the 2-3 shift where the old setup I was just
kissing the rev limit for a brief moment.
How much weight do you figure you could lose from the RX-8 without cutting into things?.. (i mean, single seat, no interior and lighweight battery and such?)
and compared to the mk3 mr2? which is better?
One is not better than the other, both excel in different areas. Just depends on what you are looking for.
are your still running the lithium ion battery in the rx8?
I am! Let's see how it does in the cold temps this winter. So far it hasn't let me down.
I decided on a na mx5 :p. 970kg 180hp 1.8 na
Please do the another round but you driving the RX-8!
I would have liked to see a driver swap too but what can you do.....
Considering I own an 04 unicorn rx8, I think I've made my choice.
It should be the law that tests like this are done on the SAME TIRE
If you'd like to make a tire donation let us know! 😘
I feel like the drivers should swap cars at the end as I feel like the guy in the miata was rly driving the car at its limits and feel like the battle could have been closer than it was, enjoyable video none the less.
Hello everyone..Short story....my buddy works for a junk yard in Hartford CT so someone decided to junk a Shinka edition the body is mint conditions just didn't start...we did mixture of oil & fuel & got it running...it only has 85,000 & he paid $300 I was shocked when he told me the price....because the rx8 looks so good in & out....So if you know about rotarys get them RX8 now before prices start getting crazy....I have 09 S2 RX8 & love it...
What a beautiful rx-8. I think if you upgrade the front end to an R-magic front bumper, you might end up with a car with a much extra beauty within it. Just my humble opinion.
What wheels and front bumper are on that rx8. Looks sexy
Enkei Kojin and stock bumper
*Sees 3rd gen mr2 in the parking lot* Ah, I see you are a man of culture as well
I'm kind of wondering why the rx8 driver was so low in the rpm the whole time the renesis it all about the rpm.
It's just the gearing vs the track layout. 2nd works well for the RX-8 here. On the back straight you can get up to about 8700 RPM.
Feedback appreciated: Couldn't the RX8 have used wider tires? I believe the fastest car known on the Tail of the Dragon is an RX7 with 275's up front, and not sure about the rear, but may also be 275's. Any replies?
This tight track favors light weight and corner speed. If the RX8's 255s were a stickier compound it would have faired much better. There comes a point of diminishing return with contact patch vs power. Remember the RX8 doesn't make a ton of power. Bigger and wider wheels and tires means more weight and more unsprung weight
@@TheSlipAngle Thanks for your response. Good point about diminishing returns. My friend's older brothers kept getting bigger Mickey Thompson tires back in the early 70's to the point they just spun in place! So there is an ideal size and compound for each car in each setting. Turns out the "King" of the Dragon used 275 front and 315 rears on his RX-7 back when this article was written: www.roadandtrack.com/car-culture/a6344/ferrari-458-speciale-dragon/ Wouldn't it be something to get him on your local track?
ITB Miata all day. I would love to challenge it!
What do you have?
Rx7 FC vs Miata NB? That needs to happen since I'm kinda divided
The problem is finded a well sorted FC....
great video, i pick the Rx8
Thank you! 🙌
This is more like a touge than a track.I believe Rx8 would be slightly quicker in a longer track. This old school itb sound is gold
We run these battles with Hot Version Touge rules 😉
on a small track like yours, there's no point in more power as you can't use it, as you said lightness is key
I would’ve liked to see the results if you swapped drivers/cars.. drivers will make a huge difference!
Limited track time unfortunately limits us!
the rx8 basically "stock" vs a decently modified miata.. i think it held its own pretty damn good despite the rx8 having a HUGE weight handicap !
Being the owner of both, I concur
man the more i see rx8's the more they start to grow on me... i used to find them ugly but im actually really starting to want one now :p
Update: own a 40th anniversary edition rx8 now, just got linked back to this video
Just a correction/comment - You list the RX-8 a 232whp which is highly unlikely. I guess you quoted the 232 figure from the specs but that's at the flywheel. With your mods i'd say 200-210whp at most?
I don't know if the figure for the MX-5 was dyno'ed at the wheels in comparison.
The RX-8 was a typo. It dynoe'd 200 whp corrected on a DynoJet
Crazy to know when made right a Miata could beat an rx8 on the track. I sometimes Brag about how much lighter my car is to my friend with a 350z but that also applies to me heheh
it depends on the driver, both of them arent good drivers you can easily tell the rx8 driver isnt pushign it to its limit and hes putting his foot down around corners thats why he skids out every 5 seconds... put it against 2 japanese drivers to really see them race
@@EnzedDev The guy has a lap record in the Miata... the RX8 was likely suffering from worn/poor tires.
I know this videos is old but I can tell those two cars do not have the same tyre treadware. It's not fare. Rematch with 200tw (like RT660) on both cars, or 100tw (like NT01) on both cars.
Wait, an RX8 w 232 whp? are u shure about that?
The rx8 doesn’t make 232 at the wheels unless you do some serious mods to it. A few bolt on’s will just take you to around 200whp.
As we mentioned in previous comments, it was a typo. It was just supposed to say 232 HP.
Oh right okay no worries, I was going to say, if it was 232whp it would leave the Mx5 on the straights. I have two mx5’s and an rx8 and they are fantastic cars! 👌👍
Oh my!!! I have same rx8. I might need to invest in those rims ! Or rs05rr? Hmm Anyone?
You guys should change drivers after each race like they do in best motoring because sometimes it comes down to the different driver’s skill level.
I’m surprised they let you on to the track without a helmet
I would take my nb any day of the week. I would love to get out and thrash on some auto x one time
How far from CT are you? We are thinking about hosting an event or two at this track next year.
This is a tough one but i would have to say itb miata, do you think the rx-8 may have won with better tires?
It's hard to say because weight really is the devil around this course. Yet wider stickier tires can make up for additional weight. The RX-8s suspension certainly manages the bumps better too.
Would have like you all to switch cars.
If we had more time on track that would certainly be cool
RX8 👍👍
(with some pilot super sports please 🙏)
Yeah some stickier rubber would help. This track is also mega slick
Stickier rubber would have been beneficial on this track, but on the street it would make the car feel so nutless because it would take a great deal of effort to get any sort of movement out of the rear lol.
Oh I completely understand, even when you purchased the wheel and tire combo it made sense. I was just talking about my own personal preference.
Also, it would have been interesting if you guys swapped cars and did the whole thing again, in reverse...
That would have been fun. We get limited time on track to film, so we have to try to get what we can in a small window.
You take a gokart and a bus to a goat track to find out which is fastest. To find the gokart is the best. Gee, thats not predictable at all.
I mean I own them both and love them both for very different reasons. The RX-8 is still a wonderful car. If it had better rubber it would have faired much better.
Also I think if Quinn drove the Rx8 it would be closer. On that track Itb Miata all day though
This battle is so unfair for the RX-8. The driver couldn’t put the power down due improper setup for battle.
But understeer is so boring 😎
Do a battle with a Honda S2000 please
This get Jackie Ding out there
This is on the agenda! We have a mildly tuned s2000 ready for testing. If you have or know anyone that would like to have their s2k tested, email us at slipanglemedia@gmail.com
My AP1 will be back in business for the spring!
Definitely would rather have the miata
Miata 4 lyfe :p
If you're not yelling in Japanese then this is a budget GT Channel. Haha, jk, nice battle!
When two slow cars meet LOL I'd like to see a video with a Miata versus a BMW Z3 3.0 and a Mazda RX- 8 vs BMW Z4 3.0 SI all on the track at the same time. That Z3 would smoke that Miata in a heart beat .
i feel like that battle relied on tyres
Tires were a factor, but even with equal tire compounds I'm pretty sure the Miata would still be faster on this track. The weight difference gives it a big advantage.
@@TheSlipAngle thanks for the reply dood :)
232 whp for the RX8 ? Any dyno sheets to prove this ? I like your vids, if you see my vids i am all into Rx8 tuning but 232 whp from bolt ons only is a bit far fetched ...
versus4582 I was literally going to write the same post, you won't get 232 at the wheels without some serious work.....I like this channel and don't want to come across as a know it all but the numbers don't add up for these mods, seeing as a good standard RX8 only has 215 from the factory (228 is bullshit) and that's crank power...if it's right, I,LL eat my words and take humble pie which means mine must be over 250 at the rear with my mods! WISHFULLY
Yeah I think that is flywheel. 232 wheel hp on N/A requires substantial effort.
@versus4582 It was a typo bud. It was supposed to just be 232 HP. I will be taking this car to the dyno soon once I settle on the remaining exhaust components for it.
@@Domas64 ;)
@@darrenlucas2768 yeah that was supposed to be just "hp". The numbers for the NB on the other hand are correct dyno proven numbers!
Pretty loose?! HOw dare u! My rotary ego is triggered. XD I wouild like to see the spyder go at it with the miata. I have seen some spectacular spyder laps (of course tuned to the hilt) so i wouldn't mind seeing a moderately tuned spyder go at it with the ITB.
Stay tuned buddy ;)
I think the RX8 might do better than the Miata if they had the same tires. That said, I would pick the Miata every time. Rotary is amazing but apex seals are not.
Poor sound but great video. Subs in Castellano, please!!.
Yeah Quinn's mic input was bumped up while he was driving unfortunately...
That heartbreaking moment when you get home and realize your mic input turned itself up while driving/filming :(
Haha rx8 "some torque" that's funny stuff. Great video
lol
How was i not subscribed... Smh
RX-8
:)
Do you guys know we invented this awesome thing?
“Voiceover”.
But yeah... I love RX8’s but getting through a tank of fuel in 40 miles is less than fun... but you can carry passengers... or a guitar at least.
The mx8 might be more fun but it’s way less practical.
Miata Is Always The Answer.
where are the helmets LOL
Mazda rx7 or nb
