The Cost Of Addiction ~ Let's Talk Reality

  • Let's talk about the realities of the cost of addiction, including financially, physically, emotionally and mentally. It's easy to tell a parent of an addict that they need to get their child into rehab. Well, duh! Like we didn't already think about that and checked into it only to find that the cost of doing so is astronomical and that there's absolutely no REAL help to be found.

Rehab is really just a time out for the addict. If they are not ready to get well it will not happen. Over the past 7 years my daughter has been in 20 plus rehabs and sober livings. We spent hundreds of thousands of dollars not including the cost of insurance which covered a portion of each stay. Basically we kept her alive until she decided she was done. People who haven’t lived this experience have no idea what this does to a family.
My daughter also did Ketamine treatments ( insurance doesn’t cover it) for about 3-4 months. $1,000’s of dollars. It didn’t help her. She actually became addicted to the treatment.
Parents of addicts have to do what they can live with. We had to try everything we could so if she didn’t make it, we knew there wasn’t anything we hadn’t tried. The hard part is to realize that you can’t fix this for the addict no matter how much money you throw at it. It boils down to the addicts wanting sobriety more than anything else.
My daughter is sober almost two years and is home with us raising her son again. I live in fear every day that she will relapse. It has affected my entire family. I still jump when the phone rings.
I wish that no one would ever have to go through this . If you haven’t lived this nightmare be supportive of those of us who are in it.

I was married to an addict for 10 years. I spent those years praying for a miracle. He was in and out of jail and the last trip he spent, I decided it would be my last attempt. He was home less than 3 months when he disappeared for the weekend. I found the strength to finally stand my ground and kick him out. I spent my last $120 on a one way non refundable bus ticket to send him to his moms, which was where he wanted to go. 13 years later, his sister paid to send him through the most elite treatment center in their area. He made it through, but has since relapsed. He is now a 57 year old homeless man, living hand to mouth, barely surviving. He even tried the marriage thing again. It lasted no time. His violent outbursts and angery beatings ended quicker with her. People don’t understand the life of a person who loves an addicti. And as hard as I found it to walk away, I can’t imagine it from your momma heart. I hope you find the strength you need to make the hard decisions no momma wants to make. You are going to be in my thoughts and prayers. But, just know, until he is really ready and he walks away from the life and friends he has, he won’t change. Nothing you say or do will change him.

You could spend a billion dollars on rehab, but at the end of the day, only the addict can make that decision. Parents who are new to this life feel that they must do whatever they can to "fix" the problem. Believe me, at some point over the years, you become so tired and if you've been getting help for yourself, you understand that, at the end of the day, the only one you can control is yourself. Sure you love your child, but accepting the fact they may die and asking God to give you the strength and courage will definitely get you through it. If anyone understands this, please let me know. God bless

He is my only child & my heart was torn out from watching him destroy his life & my own life was drastically altered for well over a decade. He finally became sober 15 years ago and now has a family with 2 beautiful daughters. I am so thankful that God heard my prayers & in His own time answered my years of praying. You are right there is no help unless you have insurance & money.

My daughter is 29 yrs old and has dabbled in lots of drugs through the years but she is a alcoholic. She just went to Rehab for the first time because if she didn't, she would have died. She was clean for 107 days and just relapsed. It's the most difficult thing I have had to see her go through. I can't imagine what it is like for her on a daily basis not being able to go anywhere because she worries, she is going to not have alcohol available. I have never prayed more in all my life that she makes it through all of this. Thank you for sharing your story and being honest. Keep up the good work you are doing to help other parents out there. He was there when he was seventeen, and he is now forty one. We love our sons, but I have told my husband I will not go thru it again, he worked away at the time, and all of our son’s hatefulness was directed at me. Even with Medicaid and Medicare, they are often excluded. And the simple fact is that the mentally ill individual and addict need to want help. No one can be forced into treatment. So families are left to wait for that to happen. I don't know how you manage to speak at all without breaking down into tears and I admire you so much for that. You are helping so many.

It is sad, that we do not have enough centers that longer term care to help our addicts. We also utilized sober living houses where they had to pay rent, have jobs and chores and attend meetings, well needless to say, that was awful. A bunch of addicts sharing a house together without great monitoring by a long term recovery person. Love that he is doing this for himself. Love that you share your journey with us.

my son is a heroin addict long time now since age 17 and he's 40 now and i agree our goverment is letting this stuff in here. i was hoping Trump would have been able to finish the wall to help. i agree with you whole heartedly. we're allowing too many people just to walk in here. my dad always said they're taking us over and they're not gonna fire a shot. they're killing off the young people that can fight them.

NO ACCESS=NO ADDICTION. Addiction accepts everybody no matter who you are and what you do, no matter what age you are and what status you have all around this World. How to prevent from access??? I don't know but never ever give up on your child. ❤❤❤❤

I was lucky enough to find a thread about addiction when my daughter started using. One main theme was how many parents lost everything either by enabling, trying to save their child or legal fees. I decided after much reading and education that I was not going to spend a dime on her addiction. I did help her find programs that took her insurance, but she could never get in or would leave before she completed the program. She found sobriety after almost dying and spending 3 months in the hospital and 1 month in a nursing home (at age 24). She stayed sober for a little over 5 years and now she using. This time she knows how to find help when she wants it.

But addiction still got me financially by having unexpected babies! ❤❤So, addiction affects so many people in so many ways. The systems set up to help those who suffer addiction are ineffective and it all needs torn down and rebuilt. And we need to figure out how to get drugs off the streets. We are smart country and we should have better systems in place.

Here in Canada we have free basic medical and detox is covered under that program. But even here rehab is a frighteningly expensive undertaking. Most rehabs have a number of government sponsored beds but the waiting list can be months long. I was fortunate enough to be able to afford my son's rehab stays but I can only begin to imagine how helpless it must be to not be in that financial position and to have no way to help the one you love overcome the most destructive force in their lives.

Check really well into the ketamine that seems to be the go to thing right now. It was heavily taken in the 80's an animal tranquilizer. Now they are micro dosing it to people. That's how Mathew Perry from Friends show died. He was a long time alcoholic/addict and was trying that. He'd had some at home and supposed to only do it in doctor's care.

Suboxone is newer than Methadone. It's a monthly script with fewer side effects. And although it's prescribed at 16-32mg a day -- the best dose is 2-4 mg. Making it cheaper - especially with telehealth. That dose still blocks opiates, cuts cravings, and acts as an anti-depressant without the lethargic/numb feeling. They also have some long-term injectables now.
My nurse mom was pretty critical of it until my brother stabilized for the first time since he was a teen. He's still good ten years later. I feel for you. It was a long traumatic road.

I agree with some of these comments, BUT... you have to be there when they want to change, stepping away takes that option away. I stayed strong and pushed and pushed until she was ready. Yes it took a lot, and yes I was stressed, but I won, she is clean so far, 6yrs. I was not going to let addition take her, I brought this child into this world and she was mine. I rode her and pushed until I got her back. It can happen, do what you know in your heart you can do. If you can stay in great, if you can't then you can't, but have no regrets. Do what you can and pray! A little yelling helped to, right God! No rehab worked for her, outpatient worked.

Topics like Delayed Emotional Growth, Enabling, How to Help your loved one in Healthy Ways, Recovery, etc. I promise it would be very helpful to you. And remember...you are not alone in this journey.

I relate to all of your words my friend. I stopped counting the money a long time ago. It never stops. Money for treatment. Money for bills they owe. Money for medicine. Money for drs. The list goes on. And that’s just for them. I’m an old lady now. Retired. Husband getting to that age. We can no longer just hand over money. It takes it for us to eat and buy our meds and pay our own bills. I’m here in this boat with a lot of parents who just can’t anymore. And it breaks me that I can’t anymore. But that’s the cold hard truth. It’s up to my child now. Can’t hold their hand anymore. 🫶💕

I know of a family who lost two sons to addiction. This family had lots of money and sent these boys to many treatment centers and they’d be sober about a 6 months to a year, if they were lucky and they’d be right back on the streets doing the drugs again. It was the saddest thing I ever saw these boys were 25 and 28. People just don’t understand that the treatment is hard to find extremely expensive and doesn’t always work.😢😢

He needs Jesus to give him the courage to face his real fears. It needs to be that dramatic. Don't give a dime to rehab. If those places were so good you would get a money back guarantee. The responsibility is on your son. He may not face it until he loses everything. Some addicts never face their true problems. A good therapist will do much more than a rehab facility. I wish you good luck.
