  • @JustAnotherLokiStan
    @JustAnotherLokiStan Před 2 lety +100

    Tbh it's more about which college is a good fit for you than it is about reputation. Harvard is more research oriented, IIT is more learning oriented (quite similar to Princeton and MIT.) Harvard offers more subject choices and flexibility, while IIT would be suitable for you if you're very certain as to what you want to study. Both provide very different job opportunities as well. Do your research and find your best fit, and you'll be okay.

    • @JustAnotherLokiStan
      @JustAnotherLokiStan Před 2 lety +5

      @Genius dude, calm down. Different people flourish in different places. Some people might do waaaay better at IIT than they would at Harvard, and for some it might be the other way around. Also, please ask before assuming anything. I applied to Harvard this year, lmao. I'm certainly not planning to go to IIT because I did my research and for me personally I can tell that Harvard will be better suited. You're preaching to the choir.

    • @JustAnotherLokiStan
      @JustAnotherLokiStan Před 2 lety +5

      @@aarsi7801 of course!
      So, start by figuring out different criteria for colleges, like your major of choice, location, approach towards studies, research opportunities, curriculum etc. For example, in my case, I applied as an astrophysics major and Harvard is one of the top colleges for astrophysics in the world. The location is great as well cuz Boston has a very young demographic-mostly people in college, so the vibes will be great and there'll be a lot of accommodations for college students everywhere. As for approach towards studies, Harvard has a very flexible curriculum, which is something I really need because I wanna explore a few very different subjects in college. Also, Harvard focuses on research very heavily, which is also great for me since I'm looking to go into research in the future. That being said, you don't have to base your entire list off of your criteria. Add some colleges that you just like the vibe of and that match your interests, and that you can actually see yourself thriving at.
      Once you have your college list figured out, try to figure out what your top five choices are. Once you're done with that, you're ready to start your application.
      For your application (I'm gonna explain the Common App process cuz that's what I used) just download Common App and start by adding your colleges. There's a limit of 20 colleges, but in case you wanna remove a college from your list you can totally do that. Different colleges have different requirements, and there's a spreadsheet in the Common App with all the different deadlines, requirements etc. You're probably gonna want to apply early to your top choice college, so be sure to start your application very early so you have plenty of time. I personally started my application in my junior year-the Common App has a rolling admissions system so it'll automatically transfer your application period to the next year once the new application season arrives.
      At this point you can't do a lot about your current grades and extracurriculars, so make sure you put in a LOOOOOT of effort on your essays. PLEASE write the supplement essays as well, even if they're optional. For the common app essay/personal statement, it is advisable to keep it neutral and not tailor it to any specific colleges. For the supplement essays though, you can tailor it to suit your application to separate colleges. That being said, it's always a great idea to look up essays written by people who got accepted to your top choice college, so that way you can mark out different qualities all those people have in common so you can incorporate them into your own essay. Different colleges like different essay styles-for example, Stanford likes kinda quirky and funny essays, but Harvard prefers a genuine display of passion with less quirkiness, so if your dream college is Harvard don't write too quirky essays, and vice versa.
      At the end of the day, keep in mind that you want the admissions officers to like you. There are a lot of things that factor into the college application system, and a lot of those might not be on your side. The trick is to do your best to utilise those that DO have a chance to be on your side. And the best way to do that is through your essays. Read your essays out loud and from the perspective of an outsider, and see if your essay would move someone/touch someone's heart. It has to be personal. Don't just write generic stuff that's common to everyone, write about what's unique to YOU. For example, most of my application is structured around two things: astrophysics and writing, which happens to be a very unique combination. You're not a one dimensional person, you can have a LOT of different interests. Narrow in on two to three of those (one of which is preferably your major of choice) and structure your essays based on that.
      If you have anymore questions, please feel free to ask me. Hope this helps 👍😀

    the reason marks are the main focus in India is because, any entrance exam in India is much much tougher than the GRE , SAT or ACT, Entrance exams in India focus over Physics, Chemistry, Maths and the questions are way way more hard than any question on the GRE, compounded by the fact that so many students give the exam making it more tough for you to get into an IIT. To get into an IIT you need to take the JEE Mains(3 hrs) and then the JEE Adv(6 hrs).

      @@divstfuidonthaveaname7583 it's not because of financial situation,if anyone wanna get into Harvard(and they can't pay that hefty fees) they can apply for financial aid. It's just that, Indians first priority is IIT over any other foreign college.
