Production Process of Curved Beams.

  • Video I filmed this summer of us working on a large curved glulam carport project. The plan was to release the two part video next year when the carport will be assembled but recent lock down situation made us reschedule our projects. I couldn't film what I planned for this month so I'm uploading this to keep my subscribers entertained as much as I can.. Curved glulam posts from this video will be a part of a structure which will cover 16 parking spaces in front of a wood research center. Each beam is 3m long with cross section of 10cmx40cm. Each lamella is 20mm thick. We removed almost all visible knots to get as clean as possible surface. Wood glue we used is two component melamine glue from akzo nobel. Holes drilled will be used to connect multiple curved beams into one box post. More about it in the part two ;)
    Thank you for watching and don't forget to like and subscribe! :D

    As always, artistic industrial delight. I loved that final clip of the robot working away in the background while someone stood in the foreground and stained. It felt a lovely expression of the way tools and humans partner and dance together.

    Okay, odd story, but since a couple years I noticed that in a lot of sports halls they use giant beams, and I, having had a weak spot for architecture and especially wooden architecture, had always been wondering how on earth those beams were made. It seemed strange to me that they would come and bend and glue piece per piece on site. So I figured they'd transport them from somewhere else. And then I wondered how they were made. Initially I was like: okay, they glued a zillion pieces of wood together and just cut the bent shape in it, but then I noticed how they followed the bending, and I was just flabbergasted at how that even worked!
    And now I know, and I'm not less flabbergasted, this is real art!

    Wow that's really cool, neat idea by laminating a bunch of lumber instead of trying to bend a big timber. The glue is going to be stronger bond than the wood itself so it's not really a problem.

      LVL beams used in residential houses are made basically the same way. They are engineered to be much stronger than solid timbers. And recently, finger jointed rafters have been a thing. I built a 1.3 million dollar horse barn and had to use finger jointed 2x10x 28ft rafters because no one sawed sold 2x10s that long. I was sceptical, but they worked very well.

      @lignumchannel  Před 3 lety

      Yes I can. We mostly use pvac d3 or d4, and melamine glue. For this project we used d4 pvac for finger joint and two component melamine glue from akzo nobel for laminating. melamine is great because it has long open time which is needed when applying it to many layers by hand. It also has great heath resisting properties which is needed for load bearing structures (In case of fire it doesn't loose it's adhesive properties). Glad you like the video!:D
