Lyrics: George Henry Miles
'God Save the South' was written in 1861 as a rallying song for southerners comparable to 'Battle Hyme of the Republic' in The Union. God Save the South was one of the unofficial national anthems of the Confederate States of America, but is often overshadowed by 'Dixie' which was popular in the south at the time. Although Dixie was a minstrel show song written in the 1850s by a man from Ohio ( Daniel Decatur Emmett) while 'God Save the South' was written specifically as an anthem of the CSA by a southerner, it is often regarded as the official unofficial anthem of the CSA.

Agreed. Just from a musical standpoint, this song is beautiful
In melody I like it more than the USA anthem. It sounds similar but more solemly.

This isn't alternate history... you know the Civil War did happen, right?

This sounds nothing like God Save The King/Queen
And the Civil War is alternate history now?
Anyone know what the flag in the thumbnail is called? The battle flag with the white cross and gray stars?

It's a real joke that the lyrics to this song say "Freedom or Die" when the Confederates were fighting for the right to deny a large percentage of their people any freedom at all.
This is a good comment, and a good thought. But there is an explanation.
The Civil War was not just about slavery. As a matter of fact, the Southern secession was not the first attempt to break up the Union. A major movement was the proposed breakaway of the New England States from the Union over the issue of tariffs. That never reached the stage of a secession, but it was widely discussed and proposed.
Unless you study the Civil War thoroughly you would not know that the South proposed to abolish slavery in order to end the Civil War. Lincoln, by then winning, refused. This, of course, this continued the war and the killing, and brought more destruction the the South.
The poverty of the South after the war was one reason that racial harmony did not come about more easily.
There is more complexity to history than what is taught in the public schools! You must read n your own, and especially read what people were saying (on both sides) at the time of the Civil War.
@@docbnj: The Civil War was about slavery, pure and simple. How do we know? The Confederates themselves said so. Check this from the Declaration of Secession for South Carolina: _"But an increasing hostility on the part of the non-slaveholding States to the institution of slavery, has led to a disregard of their obligations, and the laws of the General Government have ceased to effect the objects of the Constitution. The States of Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, New York, Pennsylvania, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Wisconsin and Iowa, have enacted laws which either nullify the Acts of Congress or render useless any attempt to execute them. In many of these States the fugitive [slave] is discharged from service or labor claimed, and in none of them has the State Government complied with the stipulation made in the Constitution. The State of New Jersey, at an early day, passed a law in conformity with her constitutional obligation; but the current of anti-slavery feeling has led her more recently to enact laws which render inoperative the remedies provided by her own law and by the laws of Congress. In the State of New York even the right of transit for a slave has been denied by her tribunals; and the States of Ohio and Iowa have refused to surrender to justice fugitives [slaves] charged with murder, and with inciting servile insurrection in the State of Virginia. Thus the constituted compact has been deliberately broken and disregarded by the non-slaveholding States, and the consequence follows that South Carolina is released from her obligation [to remain in the Union]."_
avalon.law.yale.edu/19th_century/csa_scarsec.asp
So you see, the schools have nothing to do with it. The Confederates tried to break away because the rest of the country was increasingly against slavery, and they plainly said so. Anybody with any sense would take the world of the Confederates themselves as to why they tried to rebel over any group of commentators and historical apologists.
@@docbnj southern politicians had been saying for a while that they like slavery and it’s good and it’s worth seceding. also yknow, cornerstone speech. stop doing weird historical revisionism. the north was paying a shit ton of taxes too.
They were fighting for independence, but slavery.
@@ford289cid7 Only 4 out 11 states even mentioned slavery. There was a clause to end the slave trade. Lincoln asked the South to stay and he said he would not interfere with slavery- they refused. Why? Because Lincoln was a Marxist!
