Tools/Supplies Needed:
-feeler gauges
Procedure:
First, do a visual inspection. Here we’re looking for any chipping, cracking, or reeds not tight against the reed block.
As you can see some of these have spaces, this can be checked visually or by tapping on the reed. If you hear the reed smacking down, there is a space and it’s leaking.
Next, we an also use a feeler gauge. You will need to know what the tolerance is, the space should be no more than 0.020” here.
And finally inspecting for chips or cracks. As you can see one of the reeds is chipped here.

Now, do you go check the piston that piece went through, or is there no concern of damage??
If there is multiple chips, then yes its a good idea. There is definitely concern for damage, the stainless steel reeds are not forgiving which is another benefit for switching over to a fiberglass version.
On motorcycles I just turn the reds over.
Great tip! Yes this can be done as long as they’re not fatigued. Mine are already fatigued so they’ll just break apart more and risk damaging the engine.
