    When I was in middle school I made one using a section of canvas for the pouch and sash cord (braided cord about 1/4 inch thick, used in older double-hung windows) for the cord. I think it’s still somewhere in my attic, actually. I sometimes slung snowballs with it. Could easily get 50-75 yards. Don’t throw them at people, though, because there’s quite a bit of velocity to them and you could really hurt someone.

      +YeOldeScience That may actually work indeed, you just need to work on it a bit.
      I suggest: "So, want to come over to my place and help me braid strings into a medieval weapon?"
      It takes away the awkward sounds like "er" alongside the awkward pauses, making you look more confident thus, apparently, more attractive.
      Plus, the topic is odd and interesting enough to quite possibly catch her attention.

    I made one with braided hemp and jute for the pouch. It's really fun to mess with but I am not very accurate with it. There is no short range for this thing! i cleared a 20 foot barn with it from 20 feet away. I would love to be able to hit anything at short range. I have Minorcan ancestry so I thought I would try to make an ancestral weapon, much easier than making a cast net!

    What do you like to use for sling bullets? I like to cut up wheel weights from cars or sling round fishing weights . For a bean bag round I take a Bike tire intertube and fill it with lead shot and stitch it shut with fishing wire or dental floss . With a side sling and paracord slind with 36 inch arms , I can 25 a gram 40mm lead sphere fishing weight chronighaphed at 960 fps ! That for something dead silents made outta boot strings, im amazed it hits harder than a 45 slug !

    +Lindybeige What are your thoughts on using jute for slings? I can't seem to find sisal string, but can find jute pretty easily just by going down to the local hardware store.

    • @shartThief
      @shartThief Před 7 lety +1

      Jacques Blackfeather Ive made a few with jute, the only issue Ive notices is that jute isnt very grippy, so you'll need a pouch. All jute slings have never worked for me, so i either use leather or weave in a bit of sisal .

    • @JudoP_slinging
      @JudoP_slinging Před 7 lety +1

      I find jute a great material. Sisal is very stiff, strong and abrasive- enough that most people who use sisal slings will furnish the fingerloop with leather to make it comfortable to use. You'll find jute much softer and easier to work with and it still makes great slings with a softer more flexible feel than sisal. Ultimately they are both super cheap so try both. I bought 750m of sisal online for about £14. A basic braided sling might use less than 30m of it since it's fairly thick. That's 56p a sling :)
      You can also use:
      Hemp
      Cotton
      Wool
      Nylon (including paracord)
      Polyester
      Polypropylene

  • @Ensensu2

    I did make a 3 ply braided sling and not only did it not tangle up as much it released much smoother than my other 3 piece sling with a separate pouch and release chord. The downside is that the pouch being skeletal as it is will not hold the small rocks that are common in vacant lots so my ammo is limited with that sling I have been thinking about taking the stretchier half or a sock and either weaving the braided pouch through it or sewing both sides closed to hug the pouch.

  • @lindybeige
    @lindybeige  Před 13 lety +3

    @knifekid666 It's British English instead of American.

  • @sumanthganapathibasavapatn141

    i made one on my own with just regular store bought rope thing (u know those thin fibery ones, the brown ones) with a double plait. Instead of dividing in two for the pouch, I didn't even braid that part, and wove through it with more rope, so it created a flexible pouch sort of thing.

    Personally I think the tassel acts as a quick visual reference as to which end is which as the shapes are distinctly discernible from each other: string ends pluming outwards do not resemble a closed loop, whereas a string ending in a knot may look like a tangled loop end at a lazy glance.

    care to make a video on how to make a ammo pouch for a sling because carrying a bunch of stones in a backpack to a good spot for slinging is not the best way to transport ammo and most backpacks are not made to be loaded with a ton of stone im pretty sure that the old skirmishers would not rely on the fact that there is gonna be a great selection of stone on the field and dumping out a back pack on one spot and leaving all the ammo behind would make them pretty useless because the main point of a skirmisher is to be able to move around

  • @reaver1414
    @reaver1414 Před 5 lety

    The problem with the hijacking scenario would be smuggling the ammo which would be some kind of heavy round object not the sling random pieces of string tied together the second problem would be even if you managed a successful attack at such close quarters I doubt you would get the opportunity for a second shot.

    • @reaver1414
      @reaver1414 Před 5 lety

      After some thought I'm going to answer my own the first problem can be solved by using something else as ammo that you could be carrying that would not raise suspicion. The solution to the second problem if you only have one shot then you have to make it count, you could threaten important person like the pilot if there is only one otherwise another strategy could be to instead of a person you aim your one shot at the plane

    - with leather pouch... which i might adjust after seeing your video so i can use both sides
    - without a pouch: projectils holded by the string itself which is kind of "braided", not like yours (2 big strings on the outside), it consists of 7 strings, 2 for outer wall and 5 in a "8" form to hold the projectile... great for throwing small balls for my dogs^^

      Slings are typically measured in inches from the centre of the pouch to the far end of the fingerloop. Your sling would be about 28'' by this measure which is pretty much bang on average.
      Almost all general use slings fall between 22 and 36 inches roughly. The lower end offers more accuracy and control whilst the higher end tends to power. There are also 40-60'' super slings which are used for distance shots but may require different technique. Your height may dictate which length of sling works best for you.

    Damn, now you've gotten me into really craving to try some slinging. Just braided myself a sling, though I'll have to wait for spring until I can get my hands on ammunition, seeing as how we've got around 40 centimeters of snow here.
    A question though - it should be fine to use like thick cloth instead of leather, amirite? I'm one of those hippies that avoid using leather as far as possible.

    Lindybeige could you make a tutorial showing you making a sling?

      robert theis This is an excellent tutorial, though I'd make the strings alot longer than suggested to be useful. I made my first one in an hour, it's surprisingly easy. The hardest bit was stopping the threads tangling as you braid them.

      +2bingtim When you braid them and it tangles, you have to manually keep them apparent right?

    • @2bingtim
      @2bingtim Před 8 lety

      +Duksing Chau Yes, keep the long ends seperate & each bundle tied together so each of the 3 bundles of strings don't tangle. It gets easier as you go along as the strands shorten as you braid the sling.

      Thanks. And if you are not satisfied with the length, is there any way to adjust it?

      So I should tie 2 strings into one? Do I need to separate them before I integrate them into the braid?

    Plaits and ply, you’re totally overestimating my ability to make stuff. I live in Mallorca. Where can I get a sling?

    Hijacking a plane with a sling may be impossible, but with a slingshot it's a different story... If you don't believe me just go check out @JoergSprave :D
