"The Mattress" represents when she was living in a shitty studio apartment trying to get famous and she had a mattress in the middle of the floor. She's basically saying she never forgot where she came from and how hard she had to fight to become the pop queen she is today.

She also said she was practicing the choreography for this while she was stuck on bed rest so that’s why she is dancing on the mattress in the video.
PS a reference she mentioned on twitter years ago that people always forget to bring up is the yellow wig character. It’s her version of Tinkerbell, a tortured fairy dancing in a cage, and if people don’t clap for her she dies
It reminds me of a John Waters character when she’s in the cage.

i thought applause was an answer to her critics and media, questioning Gaga’s artistry.
The leg Gaga holding represents when she broke her hip and couldn’t perform for 8 months and it made her miss performing on stage.
One of my favourite music videos. There's reference to movies, art pieces. It's just beautiful and she's holding leg, cause she injured hip at the Born This Way Ball Tour. When she lays on the matrass it's her young self, when she's in the cage I think it represents The Fame Monster era. The black suit reminds me death from the Bergmann movie The Seventh Seal. She also referenced Boticceli's The Birth Of Venus. This video is truly an ARTPOP.

fun fact: the black swan is the reference of the movie Black Swan (wow surprise) Nina realizes that she didn't actually kill Lily. She looks down and sees a shard of glass sticking out of her own stomach. Nina pulls out the broken piece of glass and looks in the mirror, realizing this is the end for her. As Thomas had said, she really was her own worst enemy. Just like when Gaga kept touring with her hip injured, even knowing that eventually that would bring some consequences.

- Venus has an mv which was filmed but never released
- Do What U Want has an mv which was filmed but never released due to controversy
- Aura had a scripted mv but it was never filmed and was supposed to be the continuation of Telephone and the lead single of the album
- At some point all songs were supposed to have a mv but due to the era and album underperforming the plans for the mvs, the ARTPOP App (which was supposed to be where the mvs would be realesed and also where new music would be realesed) and the whole ARTPOP Act II were all cancelled

I love this video so much, and I always love your reactions. The song applause is about her literally her keep going because of the fans and their applause, it was during the born this way ball that she broke her hip and she tear her labral muscle ( it's the muscle that joins the head of the femur bone and the hip ) but she kept doing the shows anyway because she didn't want to disappoint the fans by cancelling the rest shows. A she didn't tell anyone about her pain, at first she didn't know what it was, and she kept doing the shows until she couldn't physically do them she endorse enormous amount of pain but nonetheless she kept going and the applause of the fans is what gave her the strength, that's why she lives for the applause, because in that time she literally did everything she did because the applause of the fans. Hence, the part of the video she is carrying on that giant leg, that used to be her burden like Jesus carried the cross, but then she get it over and can lift it because she healed, but if you pay attention in a part of the video you see her with the leg on the floor and people are dragging her, that's the media that drag her on that horrible time, printing things like "Lady Gaga is over " "lady gaga will never perform again" showing on her face what could probably be the true because she had surgery and didn't know if she will ever walk again. Then you have songs like do what you want with my body that are about the same thing "you print some shit that makes me want to scream" her body meaning the image people see of her or what people think or say about her, so say what you want about her she doesn't care anymore.

We can see Gaga's iconic make-up as a white face with those tear-looking smudges, right? Did You know, that the original make-up for this shot was just white face with those blue eyes and orange mouth? However, Gaga said that during the shooting of the video, she got emotional, because she missed her fans (and their applause), she rubbed her face to clean it from tears and she smeared the mouth, that's how those smudges were born. 😁

The applause by us is a metaphor for the love she feels...not so much the applause itself, but the undeniable bond we have with her. It's a thing, and a thing talked a lot about by the world...that intimate and unusual bond. It's a family thing. It is very evident from the beginning that can be easily seen in the HBO madison square garden live video. Her show is as much to do with her just talking to us as it is the music.

ARTPOP was actually going to have lots of music videos, but her label didn’t manage the era well and she also broke up with her manager during this time, she filmed a music video for Do What U Want with R Kelly but never released it due to the accusations against him (even tho TMZ leaked some scenes later) and also planned an Aura music video as a Telephone continuation, and had a concept as well for a Venus music video, but was never filmed, sadly an album like ARTPOP deserved more but it was paid dust on its time.
Rumours suggest that Venus mv was indeed filmed

This was the first single and music video of the Artpop era, she put a lot of emphasis on the ART of Artpop. In this music video, she incorporated artistic visuals referencing a range of elements from films, paintings, mythologies, dance etc. (two of the most recognizable references were the Birth of Venus and Andy Warhol). G.U.Y. music video was released quite a while later, after a lot of shit happened between her and her previous management, so the theme in that video was greed.
