When you can get Bruce Springsteen, Jackson Browne, J.D. Souther, Elvis Costello, Bonnie Raitt, kd lang etc to sing backup and harmony, backed by a world class band, it must be heartwarming. To have that caliber of talent there just to acknowledge the inspiration and joy you've provided them and the rest of the world for that matter over the years must be an honor that very few receive.

Roy later joined with George Harrison (formerly a Beatle), the great Bob Dylan, Jeff Lynne (creative genius of Electric Light Orchestra) and Tom Petty to make up the band called The Traveling Wilburys. Their song "Handle With Care" features Roy singing the lyrics "Im so tired of being lonely", which is a nice nod back to this classic!!

He's not called 'The Big O' for nothing, Sarah. Never been anything quite like him and probably never will be. Soaring, slow-build ballads against lush strings were his forte. This was his first hit in 1960, and his original recordings on the Monument label from then onward remain unsurpassed. I hope you check some of them out sometime. 'Black and White Night' is an all-star retrospective made not too long before he passed. Obviously still in fine voice here, but his peak years are highly recommended.

6 Years ago, my dog and I travelled the country from the west coast. I decided to visit Sun Records in Memphis, largely because I had been a big Elvis fan. At the studio, I was overcome by records of Roy Orbison made at that small studio. I stood on the wood floor, marked by an "X" where he had stood while recording, while his songs were played over the crowd. Such a warm, heartfelt moment of greatness. If you love great music, make sure you visit. Much better than Graceland.

Roy Orbison had some tragedies in his life -- he had 3 children, the 2 older boys died in a house fire in 1968 when his home in Tennessee burned down. His first wife, Claudette, died after a motorcycle accident in 1966 @ age of 25.
You should try to watch that entire Black & White Night video -- it is truly fantastic -- the full title is "Roy Orbison and Friends: A Black and White Night" --- some of the artists on stage with him were Bruce Springsteen, Bonnie Raitt, Elvis Costello, & musicians of Elvis fame were James Burton, Glen Hardin & Jerry Scheff.

Little Remembered fact: The Beatles toured with Roy Orbison in 1963 in the UK. Although the Beatles were big in the UK they were not yet worldwide known. Roy was a BIGGER name at the time. The Roy Orbison/The Beatles Tour was a 1963 concert tour of the United Kingdom by Roy Orbison and the Beatles. Other acts on the tour included Gerry and the Pacemakers, who followed the Beatles across the pond to the USA in 1964. The Beatles were thrilled to death to tour with one of their idols. In fall 1964 Roy released one of his biggest songs, Oh Pretty Woman..it was different, had a Beatles kind of guitar riff ..if you listen to Beatles songs like Hold Me Tight and I Call Your Name, or I Saw her standing there [the bass part] you will hear a very similar riff to Oh Pretty Women's guitar riff. Another song was the Hippy Hippy Shake by the Swinging Blue Jeans, same style. Roy borrowed a Beatles style and made Oh Pretty woman a huge hit still remembered today, in the midst of Beatles dominance on the charts, not an easy thing to do...

Roy Orbison had one of the most smooth powerful voices. He could sing real high falsetto & also low. Elvis Presley loved Roy's voice. Roy was known for performing while standing motionless & wearing black clothes to match his dyed black hair & dark sunglasses. Roy had lots of hits in the 60's such as "Running Scared", "Crying", "In Dreams", "Love Hurts", "Blue Bayou", "Leah" etc. In 1988, he co-founded the rock supergroup "Traveling Wilburys" with George Harrison, Bob Dylan, Tom Petty, & Jeff Lynne.

@@carolhayar3037 Of course, growing up with it one would know, and if parents were talking about or playing the music they would know about older music, and even so it can take a decade more to catch up on a lot of the older stuff or even contemporary music that you weren't exposed to at the time which may not have been hits. But I am constantly amazed that famous professional singers at the top of their genre have not heard of of hit pop songs from even 20 or 25 years earlier. Some pop artist are students of music history such as Lady Gaga and Lana Del Rey, but many rose to the top without knowing much about the previous generation's music, which I find unbelievable at that level. For example, on the one season of shoot of American Idol called American Juniors in 2003, Debbie Gibson and Gladys Knight were the main judges, appearing on most of the episodes, and they had numerous other singer judges who appeared on several episodes or two episodes, even just one episode. Monica was a judge on two episodes, and on one of them there were at a least a couple of songs performed by the young contestants that she did not know, including Blondie's Call Me, from 1980.
