I first read the Yugioh manga in High School and the first volume threw me off. Volumes 14 and 21 of Yugioh Duelist where some of my favorite moments of the manga. My grandfather passed away in 2009 and the Yugioh manga was something I'd read to feel better. Hoping that we will get the Digital colored editions of the manga in the states.

At long last, this video is here! I want to thank Dylan for collaborating with me again after so many years! This idea has been in the works for a while now, and I'm happy we finally got the chance to start it! Hope you all are looking forward to these releases and hearing us gush about the franchise we adore!
For now, share all your thoughts about the original Yu-Gi-Oh! Manga that got this franchise started! Any fond memories with it? Favorite moments? Any little details you appreciate? Can't wait to see what you all say!

The whole yu-gi-oh! Franchise is always going to be special to me, I love both the manga and the anime series, discovering the anime first when I was younger was the best thing ever for me cause I’ll always treasure the memories of getting up early on a Saturday morning to watch the tv series even making sure to watch it at my cousins house when we would have a sleepover and then finding the manga soon afterwards just made things even better as it gave me a new perspective on the world of yu-gi-oh like the things they didn’t include in the show (yu-gi-oh! R for example) so no matter what happens I’ll always have a special place in my heart for yu-gi-oh! 🥰

What a great video!! I LOVED IT!! I've been a Yu-Gi-Oh! fan for a long time, ever since its first airing on Saturday morning when I saw the very first duel between Yami Yugi and Kaiba and hearing one of my favorite lines in the entire series: "Draw your last pathetic card so that I can end this, Yugi!" And of course that's when Yami draws the last Exodia card and defeats Kaiba. After that, I was an instant fan of the show.
Yu-Gi-Oh! has been such a big part of my life, in a number of ways. Just to list a few; I'm a huge math nerd now because of Yu-Gi-Oh. I used to really hate math growing up. But because Kazuki Takahashi's awesome concept for the Yu-Gi-Oh card game, I've improved my math skills so much. I hear that life point counter sound effect in my head when I'm calculating what my grocery bill will be when I go shopping and it's just incredible! So many ways similar to that too that involves math.
Also, growing up, I was a lot like Yugi; quiet, shy, really no friends in school. But watching the show and seeing Yami Yugi, who we later come to know as Atem, and how confident he is and watching him grow as a character (especially in season 4), I felt more confident in myself the older that I got. Atem was like my fictional role model for me; the only other ones being either Batman or Superman from the DCAU.
In short, I really love this anime and probably always will. And it's thanks to wonderful people like Dylan here who help sort of carry on Takahashi's legacy with his channel here that I watch all the time. Thank you, Dylan! Much love to you, man! Keep up the phenomenal work!!!
And I'll check out Rarity Fangirl's channel too! I'm always happy to support a fellow Yu-Gi-Oh fan! Thank you both for the video! It was great! Looking forward to seeing the next one!

Fun fact: the original plans for Priest Seto betraying anyone and everyone he works with was shown earlier then even battle city: it was Yu-Gi-Oh forbidden memories that first displayed his tendencies of betrayal that the original flashback during battle city implied, and was also the first yu-gi-oh product ever to establish him as royal blood

Early memories of the yugioh manga: I started watching yugioh on kids wb in fall 2001, and then in fall 2002 Shonen jump issue 1 released, around the time battle city was starting on kids wb. This era was super hype with both the anime and manga being a darker direction than duelist kingdom. I bought the early jump magazines at blockbuster then subscribed.

THIS VIDEO IS SO AWESOME i'm so glad you guys are giving the amazing manga a spotlight thank you SO MUCH for doing this🥹 i think one of the many things i love most about yugioh is the message, Kazuki Takahashi says it best in the afterword he wrote when the manga concluded(everyone go read that pleaseeeee) but themes of identity and the interaction between people is so incredibly strong in yugioh, i feel like this is especially the case because the characters are written so well and no two characters are the exact same, take joey and kaiba for example! They have a LOT of similarities when you think about it but where they stand in life and their mentality are different because of how they grew up, the way these characters act reflect their own lives and thats SO AWESOME, that stuff isnt the easiest to write but its written so beautifully, it makes the interaction between people feel realistic, they both come from a place we can all understand, the connection between all the characters in general are amazing and i love the message of friendship so much, another thing is the sense of community with duelists i think is very sweet, it feels a lot like how it feels being in this fandom:'3 i really like it in the original yugioh because thats the only yugioh where the card game isnt like, everyones life and everyones playing it, like theres still the average person that goes "🤨" when kaiba hosts a card game tournament that takes over the whole city, which i think is another thing that makes it feel more real and adds a sense of humor to it all, and these are just a few of the reasons i LOVE yugioh WITHALLMYHEARTANDSOUL but YEAH, AGAIN, AMAZING VIDEO YOU TWO!!🥹💚💚💚💚💚💚

I have a Bachelor's degree in Classical Civilizations and I am pursuing a career in archives because yugioh sparked my interesting in learning about egyptian mythology. The Yu-Gi-Oh manga is easily one of my most favorite mangas.
My brother actually watched the Duel Monsters dub when it came out, then he grew out of it and that was that.
After I got into anime/manga and heard enough Yugioh jokes/references, I decided to check out the series for myself. Due to past traumas with adaptations, I started with the original manga and fell in love. So I guess I’m one of those rare people who read the manga but never really watched the anime. (I have watched most of season 0 and some random episodes of Duel Monsters both sub and dub though)

I hope viz does more full color books. They did put out DBZ full color in WSJ digitally, but that only went to the saiyans saga. They did eventually graphic novel releases through Frieza, but the rest of the manga never got a color US release. Too bad since those full American size graphic novels with color let you appreciate the detail of the art. Hopefully the yugioh manga and the rest of the dbz manga eventually get full color graphic novels in America.

  • @thefonzpart
    @thefonzpart Před 6 měsíci +2

Glad to see appreciation for the manga, ESPECIALLY Millennium World
I think what would’ve solved the issues with Priest Seto’s story is that in the manga and anime it’s implied what we see in the Shadow RPG isn’t really what happened
I find it hard to believe that Atem never canonically summoned Ra in the manga. I find it hard to believe the appearances we see of the gods in the MW manga is their ONLY appearances in the past with how impactful they were in the future with the Pharaoh
I think what we needed was an anime series that was a prequel to the series that was 1 for 1 what happened in Ancient Egypt. It’s something I’ve hoped for years, but with the tragic passing of Kazuki Takahashi it’s crazy to think it will never happen and it’s in a way lost history forever

I just finished reading the OG Yu-Gi-Oh series today. You could say I have been in the process of reading it for almost 20 years now.
    [Spoilers below]
When I was in high school, I watched the Abridged series and a friend of mine, who was obsessed with the anime, told me I should read it. I started and got all the way to Death-T, but stopped because I thought that was it. That was surely all I needed to know because after that, it was just the anime, right? And I already knew that from the Abridged series, right?
Cut to today. I was recently moving and during that move, I started to listen to long form video retrospectives on TV shows from my youth. One channel did a retrospective on the Yu-Gi-Oh anime and, sure I never watched the actual show, but why not hear how the story ended. I was genuinely surprised by the Season 5 coverage and decided I should give the manga a complete read this time.
So glad I did, it is an excellent series. Aa someone who hasn't played the card game, I think that was the laggiest bit to me, more so in Duelist Kingdom where the rules didn't exist. I guess if you were into the card game and reading the manga as it came out, you might be able to predict which card would be used (if you knew enough about the cards), but as someone who doesn't know that information, it was just kinda, "yeah, get to the point." But it was worth reading through and the later battles did have me intrigued by which mechanic would get them out of the situation.
But what kept me going most was the individual growth of each of the characters, especially Yugi and the Pharaoh's. Watching them inspire each other was so wonderful. Honestly, so many good moments that I think too many shows are too afraid to say - like when Yugi tells Jonouchi that he loves him. I think we're so afraid to admit we love our friends and we really shouldn't be. Seeing Yugi have that kind of strength and those strong emotions for his friends is such a heart warming thing
And fir Pharaoh, I feel like we were just getting to know him when the series ended. We get his interactions with Yugi in snippets throughout the Duelist Arc, but then we get to actually start spending time with him in The Memory World. Only to find out that, while those are his memories, the version we're seeing has the memories of modern day Atem. We don't get to know how his final days actually played out, other than they were absolutely horrifying.
It makes me want to reread the manga already. Because for so much of the series, I focused on the growth of Yugi and his friends as they were the young ones, they were the ones who needed help. Only to get to the end of the story and learn that it's called Yu-Gi-Oh because it was about Yu-Gi-Oh; Atem, his story, his growth. His story ends and Yugi's just begins.
Even with the pacing issues due to the card game marketing, I still love the story, the characters, and how Takahashi really pulls you into being a part of it. The ending is so abrupt, it felt like a real life death where i have so many more questions I would like to know but will never get to because it is over. It's the same experience as the main cast as they also just lost Atem. Beautiful stuff.

The only Yu-Gi-Oh manga I have read is the original manga and I love it and think that it is better than the original anime. It also got me to know a friend better and we sometimes duel on Master duel. Also the Yu-Gi-Oh franchise is very special to me since I watched the first Yu-Gi-Oh growing up and when I went through a dark time I decided to watch Zexal and Arc-5 (both subbed) and it helped me get through those dark times. When I watched the final season of the anime I didn't care for it but when I read it in the manga I actually liked it since it didn't seem to be drawn out. I will say I do like the final duel, Yugi vs Atem, better in the manga than anime.

Honestly, Yu-Gi-Oh as a whole for me is very special. It's one of the very few series that has followed me into adulthood. I find the characters and the themes of Yu-Gi-Oh to be very profound and special. I have also been a huge fan of Kazuki Takahashi's art for the manga as well. His art style has influenced my anime art style and I try to draw my art in a way that's similar to the OG YU-Gi-Ohs. I have met some people who like this show as well...and it just means a lot to me. I consider it to be a comfort to me when I was in a very dark place....it still is actually. I love this series, many of the characters, and I'm considering a manga reread after watching this video. I do enjoy the manga a lot. And the artwork is just stunning but even better along with the story as well. I hold it up to be one of the greatest stories in fiction (in my opinion) along with Code Geass, Umineko When They Cry, and maybe the Outlander series (which I also need to finish reading at some point, my mom got me into that series). It was always a dream of mine to meet Kazuki Takahashi in person and just to thank him for the wonderful characters, stories, and world that he has created.

Making a separate comment for your point about little Yugi vs Bakura
While I can see an argument for it being forced to have the card game appear for ratings. I honestly don’t think it would’ve made sense if they DIDN’T have the card game in context of the story. Because how else are little Yugi and his friends supposed to fight? They didn’t have Ka’s
As Zorc said, their cards were the stone slabs of the modern age. Plus with the relationship between little Yugi and Yami Bakura established from the DDM arc, I think a duel made perfect sense.
I guess they could’ve played another game? But idk how that would’ve felt more natural than just willing their duel disks and cards to fight like normal

    • @lyndsaybrown8471
      @lyndsaybrown8471 Před měsícem +1

And it started with Bakura v Jonouchi. So, I think it was planned to have Yugi duel and show off his own monsters and skills. Plus, as you mentioned, there was the piece of Bakura that followed them in and, since they weren't having Jonouchi and Honda curb stomping anymore, they resorted to a card game. Which was good cause it let Yugi do some curb stomping.

Sometimes I'm jealous of Americans, that they have a lot more kind of series publiced in their country and a lot, lot more anime, released and dubbed. Only DM serie and only 1st season was dubbed in my country, but I was too small when this was in TV, so obviously I didn't watch this then. But, God, bless the Internet, because I found it! I found it some time ago and was able to watch some of episodes... before site died :( Yeah, so I'm still tied with english subs.
For the manga - idea of buying it online (in English version) and waiting for them to come to me from across Atlantic is too hard to imagine xD but maybe, some day, who knows ;) I know it's online, it's obvious, but having volumes in paper version, be able to have them in my hand while reading, to look at them on my shelfs is something else.

Yeah started with the anime as it came out but it was a little later by the time i discovered the shonen jump magezines in like the mid 2000s that i saw the yugioh manga as well as the gx manga while the US still had the physical copies. Had also seen some advertisements that Yugioh was a manga like in some dvds of dragonball z/gt. It was i want to say later in the 2010s that i even started to read the yugioh manga from the start as i had no idea it was just an entire media that started through various games before they even got to the card aspect. I had seen a bit of the manga in some of the other manga i started to read like dragonball in the 2000s that it was advertise in the back or front of the volume along with other manga but yeah the 2010s is when i saw the yugioh R manga in shonen jump that i then started to take out books from the libraries and read yugi's early adventures. It's whole other world when you read the first 7 volumes and how they managed to start from where they did in the show with Exodia haha. There was a charm to reading it such as how the art was, how you can see the characters change over time, and the cool games you could sometimes replicate or had been replicated in the volume for one to try out! It was interesting seeing stuff like how they showed Ryuji and his father who we didn't see until the dark side of dimensions movie and how yugi was the one to play dungeon dice monsters instead of Atem like in the anime. One of my favorite parts of the manga were as i kinda said before but the fun games that came out of it that you could pull out of the volume or recreate it with the instructions left in it! As i've gone back and read through the manga and after watching the Darkside of Dimensions movie you truly feel the connection and continuation of the original yugioh that Kazuo Takahashi (Kazuki Takahashi actual name) made just an incredible story with the various messages that started out with Yugi solving the puzzle that would not only change the world but himself into becoming the person he grows up to be. RIP Takahashi sensei.

This franchise gave me friends who I still contact every now and then and I still play the game I just can’t go out much. Truth be told I almost walked away from the franchise in middle school because of the all the pressure of anime isn’t cool. The early manga was pretty weird at times. That annoying talking baby which kept groping Tea during the Death T arc springs to mind.🤔
It's apparent Takahashi was experimenting a lot with different concepts before finally finding his footing by the time of Duelist Kingdom.
Still, I wish he hadn't shafted Summoned Skull in favour of Dark Magician as Yugi's Ace. Atleast the anime brought it back for the ceremonial duel.
I will say it's definitely one of the better manga I've read. Certainly a lot better than Sailor Moon's. That just went from mediocre to plain unreadable drivel...

It sucks that the manga has one of the localizations of all time from duelist kingdom onwards.

Interesting! How bad is the localization?
Any suggestions on fan dubbed manga I can read to get the real story?

@@thefonzpart It's inconsistent and done without care, and also features cardtext not corresponding with what the cards actually do, partially because of cross-referencing of the anime and TCG where the cards worked diffrently(though tbf, the japanese anime sometimes also has this issue, so it's not strictly a localization-problem exclusively).
The actual story is left intact, but the actual writing is left in a state that is worse than it should have been as a result.
And there are sadly no proper fantranslations of this majority-part of the manga, so one is left with either reading the official localization or learning japanese.
