Yu-Gi-Oh!: A Horror Manga About Gaming and Friendship

  • This video has some interesting history behind it. I've had the idea to make a video about Yu-Gi-Oh! since April of this year but it was originally going to be a more direct compare and contrast of the manga and the anime and why anime fans should give the manga a chance due to all of the anime's changes. But Kazuki Takahashi's death changed how the whole course of the video and instead I wanted this to be a full-on retrospective and review of the Yu-Gi-Oh series itself. The goal of the video is hopefully to get more people interested in reading the manga has there's so few videos about it and how most videos about it only focus on how dark it was.

the manga itself is a masterpiece, the art is fantastic, the way he creates games in the manga is very interesting, yes the duel masters game takes over for most of the series, but even so it still comes up with new ways to make it much more interesting, like how naruto one piece and bleach evolve their characters through power ups, so does yugioh by evolving the monsters used by the MCs

12:00 what i felt was cool about jonochi was that his deck in the series kinda reflected a kids "real" deck. Full of fun RNG cards, monsters that he just thought looked cool no matter their stats and cards he won through his journey and has a connection to.

    • @sasir2013
      @sasir2013 Před rokem +39

To be honest, for me, the three main characters represent kid's decks:
Kaiba:the kid that simply puts his strongest cards in the deck with only a couple of combos.
Joey:The kid without money and with bad cards that tries to compensate with luck
Yugi:The kid that thinks that filling his deck with 30 different combos that don't connect with each other will work and all of them will come out in order.
The funny thing is, I've seen kids and no so kids do all three of those

@@sasir2013Kaiba had many combos in his deck.
Joey did not have bad cards because he was poor. In the manga he was already placing well in tournaments by the time DK happened. He just wasn’t the best of the best. The second Jou got the smallest bit of help most of his bad cards vanished and that was again before DK.
And Yugi never put 30 random cards together. His Decks are always designed around the competition he’s entering. A big part of Yugi’s deck building is the cards seem random and disconnected but they never ever are.
All this to say they wete nothing like average players. They were way better

    • @sasir2013
      @sasir2013 Před 7 měsíci +1

@@mrbubbles6468 Okay, first of all, I said they *represent* those kids, not that they were like that in the context of the series.
Second, for yugi, I said 30 combos, not cards. With that I mean that he is like the players that had cards that combined with each other, but in a few groups, meaning that if they drew them separated (let's say, in Yugi's case, an initial hand with Jacks night, dark magician, valkyrian, Five twinkle star and catapult turtle) they couldn't do much. A real life example could be someone trying to make a fusion synchro XYZ link pendulum deck, without an archetype that supports that strategy, but with some lunalights to fuse, some junk tuners, a couple of cyberses...
And yes, in the context of the show, they're good. But that's the thing, *outside of the show* their deck construction philosophies lead to bad decks, usually seen on novices or kids. That's what I was commenting.

My little sister and I gushed over the "rare find" of Shonen Jump at the grocery store, and we spent hours talking about the few pages we managed to read before we got called away. Yugi was picking up white socks off his floor, and his mom was calling for him. We were amazed that he had a mom! We loved the art! Finding season 0 in those days was impossible; we had to use quizilla of all things! But we felt special and loved talking about it so much. Our local library didn't have the manga at the time, even though I looked for it several times, so unfortunately I have never read the manga in full. Yugi, the millennium world, the cards, all of it was incorporated into our playing pretend, mishmashed with other series we liked. To this day I have never rewatched the anime, because I want to keep it special in my memories, but it would be nice to read the manga from start to finish. :)

This is such a great video. It really captures the strength of the manga's characters, storyline and artwork. I've only read up to early Battle City, but seeing how Kazuki Takahashi's artwork evolved over the course of the series was so good. I loved seeing how his artwork continued to grow even after the series ended too. Admittedly, I like some of the changes in the Duel Monsters anime, like the huge stadiums in Duelist Kingdom. Maybe I'm just more used to them, but I think that they help make the duels more visually interesting for a TV series. That being said, the DM series loses a lot from skipping those early volumes. Duelist Kingdom is in a lot of ways a follow up of the Death-T arc, especially for Yami Yugi and Kaiba. I still like the anime, but the manga is really great too and hopefully I'll be able to finish it one of these days.

I just don't see the anime as the same timeline/universe, let alone 4Kids dub
some people might say the anime is canon
but the manga will always be the true canon to me
while anime just tried to retcon to be closer to irl cards, which created all the "Yugi cHeAtEd!" "He mIsPlAyEd!" when in reality, they were just poorly adapted.
Also, about the deck of Sugoroku (AKA Solomon in 4Kids dub). If you really think about it, his deck was actually strong by that time. Just look at the Vol.1 of irl OCG release. you will see that the baseline of monsters was 800 ATK and below. 1200 was premium. And the infamous "Mushroom Man" has both ATK and DEF at 800. He was not weak at all by the time he was called the game master. His deck truly had no pathetic card.

26:42 Boy is THAT an understatement. The card game has gotten to be a massive mess because they refuse to use set rotation with multiple formats. For the longest time, they allowed powercreep to be the single major driving force behind sales, until it became practically unsustainable without also using the banlist to nerf previous decks that could beat the new cards. Letting the powercreep go nuts has resulted in a game that's a pretty significant departure from what it was, and not in a good or fun way.
As far as "always having some worth", that's not really true, not the way you're implying, specifically BECAUSE of powercreep. Some other games at least have alternate formats where you can use cards that have been rotated out, or even rotate them back in with reprints. Because Yu-Gi-Oh! runs mostly off powercreep, most older cards that were once good can't compete, at least not without new cards to support them, and the ones that CAN get/stay banned so they don't interfere with sales. Set rotation, particularly with alternate formats, is more responsible, allowing the companies to make sales without as much risk of wrecking balance or warping how the game itself plays, which is what powercreep does.

Yugioh as a whole (excluding Rush Duels or shows related to it) is mainly for a teenage male demographic. Which is why it’s so violent and dark. Understand, it’s a Shonen, which is a demographic term for manga and anime aimed mainly at early to late teen boys (12-18). And according Hiroyuki Nakano the current chief editor of Weekly Shonen Jump, he states that since day one the magazine has always targeted young teenage boys and that the strong focus they have to always keep in mind cor the magazine. Which tell you, they always have to remind mangaka of this if they want to publish their works in the magazine. Plus the Yugioh OCG official says on the back of every pack, deck and set that the target age range is “対象年齢12才以上”
(Translation: “Target age 12 years and older”)
Which implies it’s for early teens or older. And “12 and up” ratings in most countries (including Japan) consider this a standard teen rating. The series is so amazing with how dark and violent it is. To us Americans, it’s like a whole different series when we watch the original Japanese version or read the manga. And the OCG is legally confirmed by Konami to be a separate game from the TCG (despite the cards being the same and only in different languages). But, of course, there’s a reason behind that, and that’s a subject for another time.

I think this video really nails down why a lot of Yugi boomers don't take real well to the visual design of modern archetypes as well.
There's a severe lack of grittiness to the archetypes nowadays, with only a few recent exceptions like Memento, Kairyu-shin (modern umi control), Danger and Unchained coming to mind. Honestly, it feels like Konami and even the community misunderstands this, with upcoming archetypes like Horus being a distinct example. Yugioh monsters weren't iconic because they had an Egyptian motif (there's nothing Egyptian about Blue-Eyes in its design). They were iconic because the designs felt very dangerous and low fantasy. Its not like we can't have the other archetypes we have today (we had monsters like Injection Fairy Lily back in the day), but there's not a lot of archetypes nowadays that have that sort of edge (as cheesy as that sounds).
Even new support for legacy decks like the Poker Knights feel very sanitized, and stuff like Tistina and Ghoti just barely miss the mark. Granted, i get that a lot of this has to do with the fact that modern day audiences really take to the more modern anime aesthetic, but there's room for variety in this game. I mean, if Magic the Gathering can have a fucking Dr Who and Lord of the Rings set, then there's no reason why Yugioh can't have both weeb shit and classic Yugioh designs coexisting.
Like, this game just doesn't make cards anymore with artwork like Gale Dogra. I'd love to see a modern archetype with a rough aesthetic like that.

Like holy swords of revealing light this was such a good vid!!! Great vid!!!! Like damn when I found out that Yu-Gi-Oh creator Kazuki Takahashi died the way he did or that he just died in general I..I did not know what to feel I really wanted to meet him to say to him thank u so much for making Yu-Gi-Oh it's been with me pretty much since I was born and it truly means the world to me these characters their stories I really don't know who or what I would have been like without Yu-Gi-Oh so I thank u Mr.Takahashi for everything I would loved to have met u in person. Also really loved reading the little things he would say in the beginning of each manga I got to see little bits of him at least...shiff....I'm crying bro....I really love also the way Yu-Gi-Oh was before the CARD GAME bc damn all the different games were just so cool and shadow games aaaaaaaaaa!!!! Just chu...love it I love the first seven volumes and season 0 so damn much if it had ended there I would have been satisfied....but still in the end I love how it turned out anyway it's good it's great awesome outstanding amazing!!!! But season 0 the manga the first series in general would always be safely tucked in my heart forever...ok..but for real man the ahkus...I don't think I said it right the millennium crosses looked so damn cool I understand why they took it out but damn the boi has Eqyptian drip..😍🤩😳... anyway ah yes that's why I call my sister yugi or the baby panda cos she is so much like yugi not wanting to fight and is A PACIFIST I'm always saying to her how she is yugi and I'm yami (yes I know his real name is atem but I've always preferred calling him yami and I'm not changing that NOW SO BYE!!) Cos well we are both BIG SOCIALLY AWKWARD DORKS THAT EVEN IF WE ATTRACT PPL TOWARDS US COA OF OUR RIZZ...UM OR CHRISMA we prefer not to be around so much ppl also we both come off also as dark and mysterious but in reality well my sister says anyway that I'm a good natured person and my heart's in the right direction and the growth that yugi goes through I would really want my sister to do that as well cause I know she is strong she will get everyone gets better if they want to. As for yami being smart charismatic and confident well my sister says I'm a highly intelligent person even if I don't think I am as I said before I have a good amount of charisma as for the confidence...ehhhh...kinda not really but hey maybe it's there somewhere...OMG YAAAAAAASSSSSSS I LOVE THAT DUEL THE VERSION OF IT IN THE MANGA OF YUGI VS THE PLAYER OF DARKNESS LIKE HOLY ELF JUST WOW I HAD GOOSEBUMPS WHEN I FIRST READ THAT ALSO ITS JUST SO COOL SO COOL SO COOL.....ok jonochi ok I love that guy like yami and kaiba are my most favorite Yu-Gi-Oh characters but damn joey like really liked how he looked like in the early chapters and season 0 I had a crush on him for that 😳 sorry joey but my heart belongs to yami...😅 Anyway I mean my chad of man goes against all these ppl and he don't even have that much plot armour but damn u gotta love the underdog he a real one very real and relatable. Also the backstory of his that his stupid drunk of a dad and his mom and sister separated from him...that's sad and heart breaking man...but inspiring also he truly is like a actual shouen character beating the living kuriboh out of anyone that provokes him or his friends...except kaiba cos that man can fight!!! And OMGODS THE VILLAINS like where to start with them well pegasus is the type of villain u want to hate so badly but u also feel sorry for him like he just wanted his lover once again but damn the methods he tried to do for umm..not the best but all in all a pretty interesting villain now the other two marik and bakura....ummm...like holy ra those two are dark and I mean DARK!!! Like marik wanted to kill the pharaoh and KILLED HIS OWN DAMN FATHER LIKE WHAT WHAT THE FRISK MAN!!!! And that is just the tip of the iceberg man like damn and bakura oh lords bakura well my friend loves him a lot so there's that but true man whatever bakura does u can literally feel the evilness within him oozing out of him just a person who wants everyone and everything to drown in darkness like damn...You just gotta love the fact that kaiba was a one time character...ONE TIME!!!! ALSO SO WAS THE CARD GAME BUT WHOO DE DILLY DO THEY STAYED BC WELL popularity they were popular also YAS NO CAN ARGUE AND CONVINCE ME OTHERWISE THE SETO KAIBA IS NOT THE BEST RIVAL IN SHOUEN HECK IN ANIME EVER I WILL NOT LISTEN TO YOUR PETTY EXCUSES SO SAVE YOUR BREATH!!! Heck man goes to the literal afterlife just to say to yami hey I'm here let's duel now and yami like....ok like omgods lol holy shit like the last parts of kaiba's part damn I'm a mix of both yami and kaiba as I explained above so read that but for kaiba well that is the exact same way I view games to me games are life u either win in life or lose also same based I don't follow the rules and society...bah who are they screw the rules and society!!! OMG that is a god tier quote "this is SETO kaiba's world and we're living in it" end quote like damn oh damn!!! 18:24 so I adopted the Takahashi art style cos i draw the exact way sharp and angler ow the edge man I cut myself with my own art but anyway...OMG 19:21 is me in a nutshell I would talk about everything in Yu-Gi-Oh but almost or forget entirely the card game cos everything else at least to be is so much more interesting than the card game but that's just my opinion...😅 I love this so much when the characters decks match their personalities it's just aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!!!! So good!!! I'm personally trying to figure out how to make a deck that resembles yami and kaiba and yuto's decks but idk that's kinda hard BUT I ALWAYS LOVED USING DARK DECKS BUT I ALSO LOVE SPELLCASTERS DRAGONS AND OH VAMPIRES ARE COOL OH OH!! AND DARK GODS OR SOMETHING LIKE THAT BUT DARK WARRIORS ARE SO COOL TOO!!!😍😍😍 OOOO!! AND DEMONS FIENDS SO COOL!!! DARK ANGELS ARE GREAT ALSO!!! BUT IT WOULD BE AWESOME TO COMBINE DARK AND LIGHT TOGETHER EEEEEEEEEEEE!!!! Fast!!?? Lol *laughs in ppl taking their sweet ass time with their turn blocking decks* me who loves the fact that he compared it to chess since chess has a big meaning to kaiba lol. Oh yeah damn that duel but yeah it's ten times better in the manga then in the anime!!! BRO!!!! IM GONNA CRY AGAIN LIKE THATS IT BOI BONDS MOTHER JOSHING BONDS I EVERYONE HAS THEIR OWN STORY BUT ALL END IN LIGHT!!!!😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭 In the end everyone's lives end up better bc of unity don't be alone be with the ppl u created bonds with. Bonds that last beyond history and beyond death itself....shiff ok bye I'm crying and hungry I'ma go eat now here is my 800 word essay on not what to do at a stop light...wait oops I mean why Yu-Gi-Oh means the world to me I hold close and dear to my heart. Well bye bye!!...I can talk about Yu-Gi-Oh for hours upon hours but then nothing gets done...I'm obsessed ok for real bye.🤣🤣😍😍😍😳😳😳😳🥰🥰🥰🤩🤩🤩😘😘😘😋😋😋

Yugi muto duel style is one best. Compare to many other duel, Atem, Kabia dueling is battling to gain the upper while Joey is luck and tricks.
Yugi Muto style isn't about gaining the upper hand but combintion counter power and planing, often using opponents to cement their own defeat. Taken the best from Atem and Joey to be quite a powerful duel. He defeat Dark Bakura, Kabia from the movie, Atem, often by using their own skill against them.

@@richborn6700 To be honest, as someone who got into yugioh as a young adult, when there were already 5 shows and has no nostalgia for it, Duel Monsters isn't *that* good
      you have:
Season 1: Don't try to understand the rules, there aren't any!
Season 2:The actually kind of good one, a shame that it stops completely for a filler arc and that the last duel between friends was left unresolved
      Season 3:Fillericalcamalooos!
Season 4: The climax of the show! ...as soon as we're finished with another filler arc... okay, now, the climax of the show!
The pacing of the plot was inconsistent at best, the duels were too slow (yugi vs kaiba in duel city last 5 episodes, the same as a short movie for osiri's sake) and the rules and effects were inconsistent across the show, specially those surrounding the gods and their immunity
That being said, the characters, music and designs were fine, although it's hard to believe yugi's growth when he has a total of 2 important duels before the last season. Zexal did that aspect better, with yuma playing more duels without astral
