The secret third Superman Detail Diatribe.
That is litteraly how I felt when I found this xD
"this is the face of a man whos about to be aggressively divorced" my sides.
I didn't know I was so starved of a GOOD Superman show that is PROUD of Superman being a hero, until I saw this show. Seeing Clark just being the best person ever, I was like "Ahh Clark, it is so nice seeing you again buddy! I've missed you so much". I teared up a little not gonna lie.
You and I had the exact same reaction
I don't think that Clark has a giant appetite, he just doesn't know that he is supposed to have a limit. He just keeps eating food/doughnuts because he likes the taste.
I rather like this interpretation
This show was an absolute blast!! The creators definitely had fun making this show and it's so refreshing to just have a kind, loving, compassionate superman be the focus. Plus having a young and upcoming superman where he isn't super powerful which gives great tension to the fights
Yeah and foxes the problem for why superman doesent immediately just defeat toyman and the prankster
I was already missing that 90s DCAU style of superman show, but I hadn't realized how intensely I was missing a Superman show that was *unapologetically kind* until this show came out.
Also, tomboy Lois Lane is now the definitive Lois Lane, I will not be taking questions.
1:02:00 I still headcanon that Martha saw the suit being particularly flattering around the crotch and being like "NOPE. None of that. My baby boy is not flying around with everyone able to see his dingdong."
Lolololol
"They always turn the Ginger's black"
....
Me realizing I went from always maining a red haired FemShep to a Black FemShep in Mass Effect.
.... My Gods.....
It's so weird, right? Like why is that a thing?
@@certainpovmedia I was just told in a podcast by black D&D creators years ago about struggle/etc that I should play those as characters, so I started doing so.
But the most iconic Shepard is vibrant red hair with the bright green eyes!
@@ClericOfPholtus that is really cool of you!
@@certainpovmediaI think it's just because gingers in comic media was originally used to help display the struggles/act as representation for a socially marginalized group
And gingers (and the Irish community as a whole) has over time slowly grown out of being seen as marginalized and was replaced by the African-American community due to those struggles being more prominent and brought to light (and still not really seen as "fixed" the same way the Irish community struggles are).
People have been saying it for a long time they just usually get dismissed as alt-right for some reason. It’s gotten to the point that me and my sister take bets on if the Ginger in an adaptation is going to get replaced. They’re already constantly discriminated and now they’re being removed from the few popular franchises they exist in. I was almost certain Nami in the One Piece adaptation was going to be black, I was only half right because it was her sister instead.
From the very first scene they showed that they 'get' superman. I like the fakeout where it seems like he's going to first unlock his powers to get his kite back, but then subverts it with the car that almost crashes and him jumping in to help.
Making Slade's origin working for task force X under Waller is just so perfect.
I’m so glad I happened to get recommended this since I’ve wanted to hear Red and Blue talk about this show since it came out.
It was great to have them on!
Another tiny thing I love is young Clark has the cool 2000’s S on his shirt, as a prelude to the S on his future costume
A thing i havent seen anyone talk about when Superman is fight everyone in the 'super hearing' epsidoe. Its overcast the whole time. There is no real sunlight for that whole episode really so not only is he sleep deprived hes also solar energy deprived.
That's an awesome point!
I gotta point out how much I love the new Lex. Instead of being a charming, ruthless businessman playboy. He's so fittingly different. What type of character embodies none of the earnest morals of a simple and peaceful rural life that Clark had. Which type of character embodies the opposite of Clark's hope in humanity and only cynicism in humanity, which type is constantly smug, stubborn and likes to show their superiority complex. They made Lex a chronic Redditor/Channer, which in todays age, being a foil to Superman is the most fitting thing ever lmao
It's a great take!
According to TV Tropes, the Electric Black Guy trope (and yes, that is the actual name of the trope) was started by DC Comics' first headlining African-American superhero: Black Lightning.
Basically the first main stream solo black superhero had electric powers, so a lot of heroes of color that came later wound up paying homage to the original to one degree or another. See: Static/Shock and Miles Morales to name just two.
Yeah, there's a whole weird history of how electric power has got conflated with people of color. I think it is separate however from the ginger to person of color swap even if it happens sometimes on the same character, like Lightning Lad in the Bendis Legion of Superheroes
Static Shock, I feel, is more the trendsetter, what with his animated series, compared to Black Lightning's relative obscurity. Hell, you could argue Storm was the original. And between Static and Miles, you also had anime keeping the theme alive, with Naruto's Kumogakure ninja and Bleach's Yoruichi.
From my understanding, part of the equation was actually trying to dodge copyright and playing fast and loose. DC didn't want to pay the creator of Black Lightning when they were mskingvthe Superfriends, so they creted their 'completely original' character.... Black Vulcan. And this sort of thing happened a few times, making a legally distinct copy of the original to avoid paying the creator. Andxin the process they created a half dozen blavk superheroes ALL of which were built around an electric power set.
I just realized that the Crystal powered robots is probably setup for Metallo.
i actually think the seemingly electric powers with the glowy stuff clark gets is a reference to superman blue. that one thing from the early 2000s
I took it that way too!!!
I always thought it was his bio-electric aura
@@ajh3461 I think you could make a unified theory if you wanted to combine everything!
@@certainpovmediayeah and it seems like there Reimagining it as Supermans super saiyan equivalent
"I wonder who that could be"
*starts laughing as someone who looked at the leaked concept art*
I hope we get it in season 2, because it is such interesting idea behind it.
1:55:00 On the surface this show and Ouran HHS are pretty dissimilar, but I honestly think they've got the same vibe. The fundamental core of each show is the emotional inner lives of each character, and how they each express out into the world. Like, Clark is not Superman because he wants to be a larger than life figure, he's Superman because Superman is how he manages the conflict between wanting to be normal and wanting to do deeds that happen to be larger than life. General Lane is villainous not because he's malevolent, but because he's scared and his fears blind him to to any interpretation of Kryptonian action that isn't malicious. Both shows have that fundamental trait that even when the plot goes off into crazy town, you can still consistently predict roughly what will happen next if you already know what's going on inside the heads of all the characters (including the supposedly unimportant ones).
huge fan of the dilf-ification of Jor El in this series
There was exposition of Lois’ personal issue with secrets before the reveal in ep 4 when she opens up about her dad to Clark, that her dad kept so many secrets her entire life including the worst one of all which was her dead mom’s sickness.
The show was so good with set up and pay off!
I agree with you guys that this is a clear and iconic and definitive Superman as any artists or generation could produce. It's as representative of the core of Superman as Christopher Reeve and new.
I can’t believe I didn’t catch the Luthor reveal on my watch through, I feel so dumb. Also, I love how the captions having a different interpretation of Mxy every time his name comes up
My theory with how Clark's powers activate is similar to how humans can gain incredible amounts of strength though adrenaline, Like that old story of the mother who was able to lift a car to save her child. Only Clark gets to keep that boost after the adrenaline fades.
Who really is enjoying the idea that in season 2 Jimmy is technically the head of the paper! I am, I mean we all know that Perry when he 'bought' flamebird he's also technically bought the actual CZcamsr! Also the first one to get promoted from intern to actual reporter is Jimmy this time usually he's the last one on the list of giving promoted to reporter not the first!
Ah, so this is where the next Superman Detail Diatribe went to hide.
Oh, I missed the Alex thing! That's good!
Just have them lay the groundwork throughout season 2 then pull a Deus Ex Batman in the grand finale.
At 52:45 when Blue is talking about how the DCU live action is floundering and the DCU animated is this good, that is so true and has been for years. All the best iterations of these characters are always animated. All-Star Superman, the Dark Knight Returns, etc. Probably one of my favorite comic book adaptations rn is Young Justice, which has gotten NO press for all four seasons but is still fantastic
Im a big superman fan, i hate grimedark superman. I got to say i was skeptical about this show, but was willing to give it a chance. So sat down with my wife and before we started it she asked me "what do you want superman to do". My legit response is "i want clark to be a good guy who just happens to have to the power to help as many people as he can, and as dumb as it sounds i want him to save a cat from a tree and help an old lady across a street". First episode i was sold. He does both and its amazing. This is Superman.
There's a line Amanda Waller says to General Lane (right after he realizes Superman is innocent),
"Are you having doubts because of something real? Or is it because Superman reminds you of HER?"
When i first heard that line, i automatically assumed she was talking about Lois. But why would Superman remind the general of his daugher? Because they're roughly the same age? How would he even know that?
Listening to your video today is when I realised-
Waller's taking about KARA.
Last Daughter of Krypton Kara.
General Lane must've met her, a lone traumatized Kryptonian child who couldn't possibly have played a role in anything so... he let her go? Escape to the stars? Presumed dead? Living on Mars? Teamed up with Zod and Braniac??? Is Kara Zod???
I love this idea
@@certainpovmediaor maybe it could refer to Sam's wife who seems to be dead although that seems unlikely
I’ve been a Superman fan for so long. I’ve just started the series and it’s everything a Superman show should be! I’m also can’t wait to watch this video after I catch up
"Kiss kiss fall in portal" name's host club reference i feel could reference how "our" Lois is an imposter in the middle of a big club of "real" and "accomplished" Lois'
"one of these hosts [i.e. Lois'] is not like the others." clever connection!
Superman is my friend's single favorite superhero, and he refuses to watch this show because he's so burnt out on Superman being fucked over in adaptation. I'm trying so hard to convince him.
While I appreciate the effort to make subtitles for essentially a podcast, some of them need proofreading. At one point, Ivo was subtitled as "Ivanhoe".
Yeah... Adobes captions aren't amazing. I think Googles are better and I may switch to not burning them into the videos
The only Kryptonite they have came from another dimension. What if what they're going for in this universe is Krypton didn't explode.
I'm thinking the core turned toxic and poisoned the planet, maybe the braniac machines were created to try to restore it then in the turmoil of people dying while trying to leave Zod took over in a military coup, converted braniac for military purposes and Zor sent Kal through the portal to escape the military dictatorship that Zod implemented. What if instead of just a ship full of Kryptonians that Zod usually has, this ends up as a full Kryptonian empire for supes to fight off and feel angsty about (continuing his current oh no my people are so violent and bad angst).
Oh, like in Invincible? Not saying it's bad, just that that's the comparison people will draw.
Apparently the voice actor for the unknown Kryptonian at the end...is female with a voice changer.
My headcanon is that Nemesis Omega was General Zod.
id like to thank the ospod for referencing this because i had no idea the secret third superman detail diatribe existed
I wonder if Lex and Jimmy are distantly related in this version like in the mainline comics.
love listening to this! very in depth discussion
Thank you!
Thank you, CZcams algorithm.
Really enjoying the series, but I do feel that it would have benefited a lot from being a 13 episode season instead of a 10 episode one. Just having a few breather episodes between major shakeups in the status quo would help a lot, and could be used to expand the world, say by getting to better know the staff of the Planet.
When you think 3hrs is a long time.
And your talking to a member of EFAP.
I was just trying to be considerate of their time, lol
augh you talking about this show makes me want to watch it all again
Really looking forward to how this show handles other Kryptonian villains. Wouldn’t be surprised if those Kryptonian soldiers were seeing are really Eradicator units like the ones from DC Rebirth, and the crystals growing from Kryptonite exposure are absolutely going to be used to explain Doomsday’s physical appearance. Dude’s basically a Kryptonian caveman and there’s no way they’re not going to *try* to use kryptonite on him to give Clark a fighting chance.
Hope you and OSP get together for S2
Me too! It was a great conversation!
@@certainpovmedia considering what we've seen from the trailers and sneek peaks (new take on his rogues gallery, a certain fan theory on a certain scientist assistant proved true, and the debut of our favourite maiden of might), I look forward to it
This is not a new concept, more it is an expansion. Lois and Clark : The New Adventures of Superman did it first and Dean Cain's Clark even said "Superman is not who I am, it's what I can do." The show centered on Clark and Lois's relationship as well as Clark's trials and tribulations of being an Earth raise Alien. This show just added the anime influence that mad Teen Titans good before Go!.
I can't belive they reacted to this show before shaddydorags did.
Hey now
Rags has been busy pumping out stuff that had been in the pipeline
He'll get there lol
With the next season right around the corner my wishlist is either a Batman or The Flash cameo or reference
Y'all need to do this with the second season
That just may be in the cards...
I can't wait till we get to this worlds version of Doomsday and the death of Superman. Not just because I am an edge lord but because I feel this version of Superman can twist the knife of a world without Superman harder than version to date. Also because I wanna see this version of Clark with the 90s mullet
What I'm really excited for is the obligatory Superman is 'mind controlled/ has his mind altered to act in a way he wouldn't normally choose to do' episode. They've done such a good job of setting up that his greatest nightmare is hurting people or being used as a weapon. More so than any other iteration of Clark, I think it would emotionally mess him up so bad. Even just discovering a way that his mind can be altered/ controlled exists would be enough to horrify him.
Can’t wait for season 2
I am desperately hoping that James Gunn’s Superman movie is good.
1:35:40 Uhm, Chimchar is from Gen 4, the DS era, not GBA.
Yeah thats the only thing i can comment on. I have no idea how i got here, but still watched the video.
You're right! I was thinking of Torchic but getting mixed up with Chimchar from my general fascination with it!
Clark Kent, Lois Lane, Jimmy Olsen = Kermit the frog, Miss Piggy, Gonzo
I'm putting that out there, do with these facts what you will.
I love this!
Oh, the blue power-up thing is from the 90s. I know everyone thinks it's super sayian blue, but Superman did it first.
I love me some electric blue Superman! It's definitely a reference to that, but it does work differently here. Jon Kent in the comics recently has had something similar too!
Super Man God Super Man
To go even Godder beyond Superman God!

The thing with Jimmy Olsen's design change is that he's part of this overall trend, this "Profitable Calculus of Representation" you see in modern stories (and particularly adaptations like superhero ones). Since representation is more applauded and accepted these days, but company boards are still scared of internet backlash when it's applied to major (particularly preexisting) characters (combined with likely their own internal biases), you therefore get these creators caught between their own creativity and their corporation limits, and making the same choice in character design. A lot. To the point where, over time, it almost feels like a compromise.
Maybe it's just recency bias, but with Jimmy here, alongside other recent animated characters like Gus from The Owl House and Bow from She-Ra, all very modern animated series with a black character as the protagonist trio's third wheel, you do start to see a 'code in the Matrix', as Blue put it. Not of one company, but of a general mindset between creators. You can start to guess which character is likely to be changed to non-white (and it's not often the protagonist), or which character will be retconned into being bi or queer (especially in superhero comics). I don't think I'd call it an outright negative trend, but it still does feel like creators are getting really comfortable with a template and often feel unwilling to just boldly go out there with an adaptation. Something along the lines of "The last member of an alien species, adopted son of Earth, doesn't have to be white", or "This main character, with some homoerotic subtext but also iconic romantic storylines with the opposite gender, can be gay this time"; these stories seem like the kind of thing shot down by a higher up for being "too risky". It feels like these modern stories have found a "safe" point, and therefore feel comfortable with not stepping outside it.
(Is this saying anything? I've just been noticing these patterns a lot, that's all.)
Nah this definetly feels like a trend. Hopefully over time they will be willing to push the envelope on full on minority intepritations on main characters.
How the hell does this have less than 100 views???
Well I’ve never heard of this channel until just now. The CZcams search engine is broken and the algorithm is a fickle thing
Aint that the fucking truth@@Broomer52
41:33 I can never escape Star Fox 64
😮
I am going be contrarian and say that I HATE most of the designs in this show. Every villain is just a mercenary wearing boring bulky power armor. What this show does right is the core characters but all the lore bits are just.. off.
