  • Join me as I return to the world of Neo-Gotham to look at one of the most irresponsible villains in Batman Beyond - Walter Shreeve, also known As Shriek. We'll look at a Marvel Comics character he shares some similarities with, before moving on to the appearances in the show, as well as an appearance in the tie-in comics.

Brings into mind why I would love to create two types of characters: a Multiversal ace pilot with a downtime soft spot for classic literature, yuri love stories and magical girl shows (based on Star Wars Legends' Maarek Stele, the DCAU's Old Yeller-loving Green Lantern John Stewart, and me, who really is into books, girl's love stuff, and mahou shoujos) and a fierce looking yet bubbly and unflinchingly optimistic time manipulator gunslinger girl who was actually born a Muggle guy, only to be put on a superhuman clone body after a near-heroic sacrifice... not that they mind too much, for she adores her new identity (basically a mix of Kyouko Sakura, the DCAU Wally West, Homura Akemi, Vash the Stampede, Chisato Nishikigi, Aoi Futaba, and Guy Shishioh).

Beyond really deserved a good game since the Return of the Joker tie-in game was infamously terrible, Terry's villains would make for fun boss fights in a fifth generation game (or even sixth generation since the PS2 and Dreamcast were out when the show was airing) like Spider-Man 2000 and Enter Electro which had solid bosses that involved a few puzzles like throwing Carnage into a sonic generator or solidifying Sandman with water.

One think about Shriek is that after Powers rejects his demolition idea and asks him to become an assassin instead, he takes exactly zero persuasion. Not the only villain in Beyond to go from a respectable job to attempted murder in a day, but you'd think he'd have enough self respect as a man of science to push back even just a little bit.

I want to add, that it also took very lil persuasion from Terry to enter his workshop/house while being disguised as pizza delivery boy with the wrong adress and some good pizza.
Shriek not only accepted the Pizza, but let him in and talk about some of his work... before getting super suspiscious and trying to kill him when he mentions something related to his work and recent shenanigans.
The man is not only easy to persuade and cleary willing to kill someone to get some recognizance and get respect, but he also gave me the vibes that he is very protective of his research, cause Terry could have been a corporte spy trying to steal his work for some other company.

0:20: Gotta adore Alex Ross' art.
Never even thought of associating him with the Shocker myself. Am more of an Electro guy.
1:04: You sure? There should be a sound-based villain in old Batman mythos, and there's also the likes of Sonar.
1:27: Powers has a point there, but come on, weaponized sound does make for covert destruction easily excused by flimsy construction. And think of the taxes reduced because of such.
2:05: Surprisingly, TV Tropes puts justifiable fault against Bruce here via "Informed Wrongness". It says thus: *"Powers trying to tear down the Historical District may be for his own personal gain, but Bruce only wants the place unharmed for sentimental reasons. As we've seen when Bruce and Terry explore the district, it has become so rundown that nobody appears to even live there anymore."*
Besides, the place will inevitably be torn down after Bruce and maybe even Terry pass on. That I can gladly accept.
3:17: This becomes jarring when we reach the Return of the Joker movie, where he has another revamped look.
3:56-4:19: And yet it's because of this grit that we love and remember the show. Not even Static Shock is this fondly known, what with it semingly treating homelessness/schizophrenia ("Frozen Out") and gun safety ("Jimmy") in a noticeably childish, for lack of better terms, fashion... I don't hate that show, but boy, do I notice campy elements that make it feel less like the DCAU, and more like X-Men/Spider-Man: The Animated Series.
So, what do you guys and gals think of the "Bruce Wayne is the mask of Batman" interpretation for the episode "Shriek"?
4:55: Matches Malone is one tough act to follow.
5:36: Guess Derek's dad, Warren, taught him a lot about Lex Luthor and less about Edwin Alva.
The soundless sequence really doesn't feel out of place for a show like Samurai Jack. Love that show for unforgettable spectacles like the "everything is bathed in light but the villain" sequence for Chapter XL - "Jack vs. the Ninja". (And yes, I actually am still a fan of Season 5, regardless of its flaws and redundancy with the IDW comics in mind.)
That's what I like about Batman Beyond Vol. II issue 5 - "Perfect Pitch". It neatly fits as an interquel for S1E10 - "Shriek" and S2E12 - "Babel", plus it shows off the hearing device that the villain uses in future appearances in the end of the comic. Now that's continuity neatly fleshed out in side material, not unlike Gotham Adventures issue 4 explaining Catwoman's new look and estrangement from Batman, The Batman and Robin Adventures issue 15 and Gotham Adventures issue 6 explaining the man who would become Deadman, Superman Adventures issue 3 explaining why there's a Brainiac on the Fortress of Solitude's Krypton orb (although there is a later continuity clash in Superman Adventures issues 22-23, where said Brainiac does his dramatic uprising), and so on.
8:27: Almost got 'im with Batman's identity there, and why does the assistant look like a descendant of Dr. Milo?
With The Batman Adventures 1992 issues 4-5 in mind, Scarecrow did the Babel plot first. Sorry, Shriek.
9:14: If I were Batman (or Superman in "Legacy"), I would have LOVED to torment these naysayers and critics afterwards. I'm a good man, but I am an undenying proponent of paying evil unto evil.
I really wonder how Shriek survived that building. Quite a riddle not unlike how the Riddler recovered from his end state in B: TAS' "What Is Reality?".
10:16: Who's voiced by Hogarth Hughes from The Iron Giant and the older Tim Drake in Static Shock's "The Big Leagues" and Batman: Mystery of the Batwoman.
10:27: Heh, dude, blinking won't make us miss seeing the guy.
And really, those black and white sequences for "Epilogue" better be a GunBuster Episode 6 love letter.

I recently saw a CZcams video of a kid and his prosthetic arm where he shows it off, subsequently dislocating it at the elbow region. This highlighted how technology for medical purposes has obvious limitations and it shouldn't be rushed, as it could lead to disastrous oversight. Same principal applies for Man-Bat, Lloyd Ventrix, Anthony Romulus and Shriek. Their achievements (and for Ventric and Romulus, their tools) would have been better had they not rushed into immediate practical application. Then again, curing disability resulting in supervillain is a trope that should be treated more tastefully.

since 2015, I have had a n awesome idea of how a Shriek boss fight can be used in a batman beyond video game.
The boss fight could be quite similar to the mr freeze boss fight rom arkham city. Terry can use a series of different attacks but the same attacks cant be used twice. for example, a batarang could be thrown but Shriek can mute and amplify the sound and if the batarang is used again, Shriek can hear the batarang cutting the air and wont fall for it. A glide kick could be used but if used a second time, Shriek can hear the wind blowing as the wings fly and wont fall it twice. Also, smoke bombs and invisibility are useless against Shriek because he could still find out where you are. Why? Because he uses the sound mech in his helmet to to use echolocation to be aware of his surroundings.
The sound masker can be used as well to mute everything where his footsteps could only be heard but also amplify few sounds like the soundo f explosive gel being used, the sound of batarang cutting the air, etc; he wont fall for it twice

This whole episode showed to me just how deeply small-minded, shortsighted, pathetic and ultimately dull Derek Powers truly is as a person. He's got this guy with amazing sound manipulation technology; sure, dynamite may be cheaper, but Shriek's tech doesn't need to be replaced after every single use. And since Powers is already a heartless businessman, he could very well sell this tech for military use. Anyone who read anything Warhammer 40K can tell you that Shriek's weaponry can be revolutionary, highly destructive and lucrative.
Instead, he sends this random scientist with his "impractical tech" bring down old buildings to kill a business rival. Because THAT is somehow more "practical" than actually making money out of this invention. Powers is the embodiment of the modern executives and tycoons who confuse being "practical/pragmatic" with being mindlessly inflexible, bland and callous. The exact type of people like Mark Zuckeberg and Bob Iger, who takes awesome stuff and then dumbs & dilutes it into tasteless, soulless products to be used and discarded or taken advantage in the most blatant and shameless way possible. In fact, you can see in his face and eyes that Derek is sorely and completely lacking in any deep or higher form of intellect and mentality. Much like people have described someone like Palpatine, Tywin Lannister or Roland Dagget in the past, Derek is not just a poisonous blight, but completely empty and hollow. An empty shell of a person with nothing inside but aimless greed, low cunning and petty cruelty. Even when compared to someone like Luthor (who had ACTUAL ambition and thought behind his plans, egomaniacal as he was), Powers comes off as bland for someone who was supposed to be the new Batman's arch-enemy.

    • @DeathMessenger1988
      @DeathMessenger1988 Před 15 dny +2

      @@michaelandreipalon359
I'm not saying Sidious isn't a brilliant evil genius. But the plot makes it clear that he's a born sociopath misanthrope whose sole goal is hoarding power and dominion for himself. He has a vision for the galaxy, yes, but it's absolutely self-centered and revolves around his god complex. And Palpatine has the "excuse" of his family being your typical elitist aristocrats with low affect for common people, and that was before Plagueis got his hands on him. He's clearly a visionary in terms of how to gather power and resources and use them to ensure galactic dominance
Derek Powers, even BEFORE becoming Blight... The guy had NOTHING behind those eyes: no vision, no Freudian Excuse, no ture motivation or ambition. He was already practically owner of Wayne Industries, which were insanely profitable and wealthy on honest work and applications alone long before he took over, and he was in need for money like Roland Dagget. He had no vendetta against Batman or any hero, unlike Luthor. No guiding principle or twisted worldview or belief. He's just a pure sociopath whose sole emotions are greed, cunning malice and cruelty. He endangers, harms and kills people without ANY point. And as you see in this episode, he's so hardset on that method that he dismisses a revolutionary technology with infinite applications because, quote, "dynamite is cheapter". He doesn't even intend to monopolize it for personal use like some mad scientists do. Just convinces this random scientist to become a killer for hire against some old man he could have sent a more common hitman against.
Like I said, the character is so disturbingly hollow that even Palpatine emotes more than this guy. It's a mask, yes, but Palpatine at least CAN mask and fake emotions to play the "benevolent elderly leader who cares for the people" or "benevolent dictator", and is shown to ENJOY things (sadistically yes, but that shows he can feel joy in what he does).
Aside from fake politeness with little smiles and anger (usually when he's turning into blight), Powers doesn't change that fucking expression the entire cartoon as far as I've seen. Even when Shreeve is trying to "scare" him at the start... there's no actual fear there until he thinks he's about to be run over by a train. And then he immediately goes back to his normal slightly bored blank look. Like some cold, corporate machine who ruins people, spreads destruction and doesn't even derive emotion from it. I've often said that Palpatine is a low-functioning sociopath that Plagueis honed into a high-functioning one. Powers is a empty shell of a sociopath that got to the top of the corporate ladder. Kinda like "What if Michael Myers became a corporate executive?"

However, he is very callous and won't hesitate to kill someone if they get in his way. If the writers focus more on his struggle with being deaf and learning to take responsibility for his actions (like Terry) he could have been the only Beyond villain to reform. That is ultimately the issue with most of the Beyond rogues. They do not get enough episodes to truly explore their personalities or present in a sympathetic light.
