Forgotten Star Sapphire Fears Men - Mistress Of The Seventh Dimension

  • Star Sapphire is known by most as a villain or ally to Green Lantern. Recognised most often as Carol Ferris (though there are others) the lore has expanded to include an entire Lantern Ring Corps, and has gone through many ups and downs. However, before any of that there was another Star Sapphire out there. Yes, the Star Sapphire who debuted in the Silver Age in Green Lantern 16 had been inspired by a villain of the same name from the Golden Age. That version had been a foe of The Flash (Jay Garrick) and was mistress of the Seventh Dimension. Despite only appearing twice DC Comics would end up using the character again in a bit of a surprising way years later at the start of the new millennium. We do a retrospective on the golden age Star Sapphire here on Casually Comics!

Instead of the "afraid of men" angle, I liked the original implication that Star Sapphire just didn't want the Flash interfering with their plans again, and went, "What do I know about the Flash? Well, they're a man, so if I get rid of all men on the planet, I'll get rid of the Flash! That's clearly the easiest way."

The Brave and the Bold miniseries is quite a delight in how it portrays Hal and Barry. Barry has his life together, he is in a relationship with Iris, has a steady job outside the mask, and is beloved as the Flash. By contrast, in each issue Hal has a new job and a new girlfriend - signifying his unstable life out of the costume - and the only thing he has going for him is being Green Lantern (though he faces some problems there). But in the last issue, Iris is dead, Flash is on trial and his life is in shambles, with Hal being the one to provide him support as well...his life is always in shambles. Its quite the heartwarming depiction of their friendship.

Make her a magic based star sapphire, someone to go against alan scott, also from the same era and magic based. She can still be the queen of the zamarons, but her research into magic got her trapped in the 5th dimension, causing the zamarons to look for a suitable replacement, while she watches, thinking her former subjects abandoned her, so she tries to create a new army from earth women.
Her gem would be the natural enemy to the starheart, with her starting to grow obsessed with alan scott from watching his adventures, somewhat similar to carol ferris's yandereness. Her gem is the only thing able to put out his green flames.

Yes, I would like to see the Golden Age Star Sapphire more often. DC writers and artists need to make her look more younger. If she was in the Seventh Dimension for so long, why did she have to age so much? The DC writers could make her domain similar to that of The Phantom Zone, where the prisoners there never age. The Golden Age Star Sapphire was a very attractive, sexy villainess when she made her two appearances prior to the 21st Century. When she returns, she should physically look like she did in her prime in the late-1940s. I definitely would be open to some “untold” Golden Age encounters between Star Sapphire and The Flash, and perhaps Green Lantern as well.

For next time I nominate Starfire, the early 70s Supergirl villain who appeared in a short arc; Starfire, the alien warrior who fought against the oppressors of her world in her own series (alongside a few cameos here and there); and Starfire, which was once the name of Leonid Kovar, aka the Teen Titan Red Star who got involved with Pantha (who in the comics is an edgy hispanic Wolverine expy to the point where she was also known as Subject X-24) before becoming Russia's foremost superhero and protector.

Golden Age Star Sapphire could be a great villain for an event if they wrote it carefully. The reason she never attacked Earth again? She's not trapped on her planet, its just taken her this long to craft her master plan! Her dimension-shifting powers could be really dangerous if used properly, and especially if it is extrapolated to letting her travel between Earths.

  • @KittSpiken

Being afraid of men seems loosely based on where she raptured away all the [20] men.
Even within that omitted contex, the rapturing was a (failed) attempt to counter her nemesis, the Flash, not wholly "men, ugh."
From your overview of the story, the misandry initially seemed subtextual. Also present, a subtext that she thought women would be easier to dominate (but those Keystone girls had gumption and weren't gonna be pushed around).
To keep Barry's claim that she's afraid of men, it needs to be set up in *this* story.
Star Saphire needs to recoil or flinch in an interaction with a man that doesn't have super powers and isn't actively trying to harm her.
She flings herself away from Barry into normal space, is laid out, a civilian or police officer offers her help and she lashes out.
But the conclusion that she's afraid of men in only half right: in the climax, both Star Saphires are pitted against each other, stripped of their magic power and her misandry is revealed to misanthropy and fear of other people.
Give a little retcon shake to the Saphire choosing Carol more lantern ring style, not just because she looked like the former queen. Have her chosen and abandoned by the Saphire and her space Amazons.
Have Barry learn from the dark reflection of his actions in SS1's and heal, instead of breaking down further.
It doesn't all quite fit together yet, just spit balling how best to incorporate and elevate what was presented without just spending an hour writing a draft in a comment that's too long to reasonably assume anyone should actually read.

The Milton Caniff style artwork in the original Star Sapphire story is the bees' knees. I'm wondering if the original being called Sapphire, and hanging out with Zamasons and not liking men, was supposed to come across as so sapphic?

Completely random thing to take from this video, but that Flash Annual #1 was my introduction to superheroes. My dad only kept a small collection of comics from his childhood, and with the other ones being stuff like The Dark Knight Returns, Flash was the only one my book-ravenous seven-year-old self could really comprehend, and I LOVED it. From there I found the Justice League cartoons (sadly not B:TAS, took me until high school to finally watch that), Young Justice, Spider-Man, etc. It took until Spider-Man’s entrance into the MCU for me to *really* get into superheroes, but the Flash (and especially Wally West) has always been one of my favorite fictional characters, and I’ve always felt a special love for the Flash Family because that Flash Annual was my first comic book.

Lol, I just read Green Lantern #16 last week (sadly, in a b&w format). In that story she seemed like a vehicle to get Carol more involved, rather than just pining for GL on the sidelines and getting mad at Hal for standing her up. I haven't read any other stories with Star Sapphire, but from what I've seen there needs to be more ground laid pertaining to her motivations, and maybe a tweaking of her origin and history. She could be an interesting character if handled correctly, but so far, no great shakes. Thanks, and love the wig, Miss Frizzle. :)

Back then, comics was _the_ most consumed form of media back in the day, which is why it was called the “Golden Age.” Everyone was reading comics: men, women, children, teenagers, old, and young. Comics weren’t just about superheroes(they weren’t originally about superheroes), they covered all genres: horror, drama, romance, etc.
After the Comics Code Authority, comics entered the Silver Age and became a “niche” hobby. Even today, comics aren’t as popular as they were back then.

Can you do a video on the Bronze Age Star Sapphire? The one from the 70s Secret Socety of Super-Villains? That was my introduction to the character. She had some intriguing subplots going on/hinted at, but then I never saw her again. With Carol's SS being just someone mentioned in footnotes, dialogue and letters pages. This Gold Age one I only discovers years later in a higher quality reprint of that Flash Annual (reprint of a reprint), but loved discovering an Earth-Two double (oh and thanks, I think this might be my 1st kearning that she had a second Pre-Crisis appearance). I liked her, or the idea of her, enough so that her modern return was one of the few modern comics I justhad to get (even if from a dollar bin). One question that I never had answered for myself was which Star Saphire was it in Crisis? Carol or the SSSV?

There was a 3rd golden age story that didn't get printed as the comic was canceled the issue it was to come out. I remember the last ending page or two from that story printed in, I think, one of the 100 Page Spectacular comics. The last panels show Wonder Woman showing up and I think original Green Lantern and telling the Flash she would take the captured Star Sapphire to Reform Island to fix her criminal tendencies. Apparently, that page or two that showed up in that comic is the only surviving parts of that unpublished story now. It was colored and everything ready for print.
