Chinese hospitality in restaurant means they'll always order more than you need. Also, people eat snails in France, chicken feet in China, insects in Thailand, etc. Shanghai temperature in winter can go below 0° C, in summer as hot as tropical Singapore. Some tourists feel that traffic is too quiet because most vehicles are electric. The horn use may not be as restrained as the swiss but definitely not as liberal as India. Essentially, when in Rome don't expect them to be like xyz country. China may be impressive in many aspects but they are not perfect and is still dynamically progressing further.😊
Well, if Italian restaurants are noisy, it doesn't change anything about Chinese ones - they are still way noisier than in Russia for example. Which is not a bad thing, just a difference I noticed. As for snails, I was never able to try them either, I'm not saying that China is the only country where I don't understand why people eat what they eat (it's just another level of weird 😁) But of course, as any other person on this planet, I have prejudices due to growing up in one country, and I have much to learn. I don't think anyone can escape that and be totally free of prejudices, even if trying hard 😌

Конечно когда в первые посещаешь другую страну, всё кажется удивительным, привлекательным. Тем более когда ничего толком не видел в стране которой живёшь. В России много национальностей, их культура, обычаи, колорит. Всей жизни не хватит чтоб все это объехать и изучить.. для меня Россия это лучшее место на всей планете. Здесь есть всё что есть во всех частях земли. В плане природы точно. Я полагаю на этот раз по английски для друга из Китая, так как Французский он вряд-ли понимает, а Русский тем более🙂

Once you get out of the main tourist circuits, (like in the countryside or in big unknown provincial cities) you quickly realize that you are just one of the very few foreigners there. But then you get a better taste of the “real” country. Even in technological hubs like Shenzhen, you can quickly get “lost”. I wanted to visit the artistic neighborhood of “Dafen” there, took the subway on a line where I was the only foreigner, got out at the Dafen station where nobody could understand English! It took me 2 hours to find the artistic place… I had to sketch an artist and his painting on a napkin to be understood and immediately get the right directions. I like these experiences. (I am French too, living in US)

Seeing you wondering why some comments can't accept objective criticism, here's an attempt to explain: The acceptance of criticism varies at different stages of an individual's life, same with nations. China has made initial progress in building the country through the efforts of the past 30 years. If it were a developed country that had already existed for too long, no matter how much foreigners criticize, they would simply shrug it off. From the perspective of people who live in China everyday who regularly read Western news, the bias and malice of Western media are quite evident. For example, they may tend to only report negative news and ignore positive ones, criticize others for industrial pollution while engaging in widespread factory construction themselves, or criticizing others for wasting food while not cherishing it at all oneself. etc. When your videos present similar Western perspectives, some people might mistakenly categorize you with the media they have always disliked. Personally I don't feel that way. It's just a personal perspective of a real tourist, I guess the discomfort you experienced in China mostly stem from the fact that you are not much a people person, me too, and that's why I never go to tourist spots during holidays. Креветки смотрящие своими чёрными глазками из супа, напомнили мне один старый анекдот. Охранник на заводе сидит на посту и есть бутерброд с килькой, к нему подходит директор и говорит что завтра будет делегация иностранцев и еда должна быть поприличней или без неё. На следующий день директор водит делегацию по заводу, проходят мимо охранника а тот ест бутерброд с чёрной икрой, все немного удивились и пошли дальше. После отъезда делегации директор подходит к охраннику и интересуется, где тот достал чёрную икру, на что охранник ему отвечает что всю ночь у килек глаза выковыривал.

It seems to me Gabrielle come from a rather affluent protected environment. If you compare china to us, china is already a paradise, with very low to almost no crimes, no homeless, no graffiti...
just a few points: not all western apps are banned, only ones that don't adher to chinese laws. I will just give one example, adult content. google chose to leave china rather than filter any content at all, thus it and all its subsidiaries don't operate in china. apple and microsoft adjust their products accordingly and thus you can use them in china without the need for a vpn. politeness is relative. a better term is cultural difference because some things that are considered polite in the west would be rude in chinese culture. example, childern are taught to greet people loudly, so they can be heard. when you meet your uncle, you should raise your voice 'uncle!'. by being shy and not addressing loud enough, you are showing disrespect. in western culture, your actions might be reserved in order as not to be judged. in china, no one will judge you so do as you like as long as you aren't intruding or hurting anyone else. there are nearly 10000 cafes in shanghai so I'm not sure what places your penpal took you. starbucks should be all over the place and there are chinese equivalents(luckin coffee) not to mention independent western style cafes. yes tea is much more popular but you shouldn't have to walk far to find good coffee. in most se asian countries you bring your own paper, wet wipes, hand sanitizer, etc for restrooms so it's the same in china. some in tourist areas do have paper but one should always be prepared. and of course people wash their hands, come on. maybe you just encountered some slobs but you shouldn't assume everyone is like that. if you are in less touristy areas, yes it might not be as well maintained but that's in a lot of places in the world. maybe russia or france has clean restrooms everywhere I dont know but come to the usa, you will see some filthy public restrooms lol. just way too many things to comment about but I can say maybe your penpal didn't do a good job explaining things. like that kidnapping thing, I hope you took it as a joke lol 🤣

Welcome to China! I'm surprised you didn't like the shrimp dish for I thought French people were generally comfortable with seafood and have a variety of seafood dishes on their menu. On the hot water preference in China it actually has a historical background. During the Korean War in the 1950s, the Americans used the biological warfare on China and North Korea. As a result the rivers near the Chinese-North Korean border were filled with harmful bacteria. So the PRC government at that time called on all Chinese citizens to boil the water before drinking to prevent infection. Since then boiling water has become a habit of Chinese people and lasted till today. And those shop assistant in Beijing they don't only do that to foreigners, as a local I sometimes get awkward too when they won't leave me alone but I've adapted. Afterall they are just doing their jobs. Anyway it's nice to see you had a good time. China is a massive country and some places hardly have foreign visitors throughout the year so not many foreign adaptions. As a Chinese who lives in Europe, this is one of the most objective views of China. It's an amazing country with rich history and culture. However, it's still got a long way to go. Everything been developing so fast in recent decades, people just didn't have the chance to be educated/civilized. If you look at the younger generations, it's much better. Though this will be a continuous effort for several generations. That said, it's still a great country in the sense that it give millions of normal people like me a chance to choose how we want to live our lifes, which was absolutely impossible for my parents/grandparents. This all happens in short 30 years. For that, I'm deeply greatful. Hope you will go back to China in the future since there's so much more interesting things waiting.

Well, if Italian restaurants are noisy, it doesn't change anything about Chinese ones - they are still way noisier than in Russia for example. Which is not a bad thing, just a difference I noticed.

Живя в одной Москве и временами выезжая в Питер ничего не увидишь. В России есть всё, поля, степи, горы, моря, озёра, океан, долины, леса, да что угодно. Конечно когда в первые посещаешь другую страну, всё кажется удивительным, привлекательным. Тем более когда ничего толком не видел в стране которой живёшь. В России много национальностей, их культура, обычаи, колорит. Всей жизни не хватит чтоб все это объехать и изучить.. для меня Россия это лучшее место на всей планете. Здесь есть всё что есть во всех частях земли. В плане природы точно. Я полагаю на этот раз по английски для друга из Китая, так как Французский он вряд-ли понимает, а Русский тем более🙂

В России большие расстояния между климатических зонами, но очень рекомендую съездить на Алтай по Чуйскому тракту, к Карокольским озерам. На Кавказе очень красивая природа, горы, озера. Съездите в Кисловодск, там можно взять экскурсии и на Эльбрус, Домбай и многие другие красивые места.

Once you get out of the main tourist circuits, (like in the countryside or in big unknown provincial cities) you quickly realize that you are just one of the very few foreigners there. But then you get a better taste of the “real” country. Even in technological hubs like Shenzhen, you can quickly get “lost”. I wanted to visit the artistic neighborhood of “Dafen” there, took the subway on a line where I was the only foreigner, got out at the Dafen station where nobody could understand English! It took me 2 hours to find the artistic place… I had to sketch an artist and his painting on a napkin to be understood and immediately get the right directions. I like these experiences. (I am French too, living in US)

The acceptance of criticism varies at different stages of an individual's life, same with nations. China has made initial progress in building the country through the efforts of the past 30 years. If it were a developed country that had already existed for too long, no matter how much foreigners criticize, they would simply shrug it off.
From the perspective of people who live in China everyday who regularly read Western news, the bias and malice of Western media are quite evident. For example, they may tend to only report negative news and ignore positive ones, criticize others for industrial pollution while engaging in widespread factory construction themselves, or criticizing others for wasting food while not cherishing it at all oneself. etc. When your videos present similar Western perspectives, some people might mistakenly categorize you with the media they have always disliked.
Personally I don't feel that way. It's just a personal perspective of a real tourist, I guess the discomfort you experienced in China mostly stem from the fact that you are not much a people person, me too, and that's why I never go to tourist spots during holidays. Anyway, welcome to visit China again, and continue share your firsthand experiences❤

Индустриализация в России\СССР прошла давно и сменилось несколько поколений выращенных в советской культуре и на советском образовании, в Китае же по сути местный контраст и поведение людей вызвано тем что жители крупных высокотехнологичных городов это по сути вчерашние крестьяне. Креветки смотрящие своими чёрными глазками из супа, напомнили мне один старый анекдот.
Охранник на заводе сидит на посту и есть бутерброд с килькой, к нему подходит директор и говорит что завтра будет делегация иностранцев и еда должна быть поприличней или без неё. На следующий день директор водит делегацию по заводу, проходят мимо охранника а тот ест бутерброд с чёрной икрой, все немного удивились и пошли дальше. После отъезда делегации директор подходит к охраннику и интересуется, где тот достал чёрную икру, на что охранник ему отвечает что всю ночь у килек глаза выковыривал.

Very nice overview of your Chinese trip. In a very short time, you were able to discern the main differences between cultures that you have embraced. I left France 44 years ago and like you I decided to live in different countries and now reside in the USA. One thing which I find interesting through your experiences is that, the world that I too travelled has not changed that much. Европа действительно скучней потому что более понятна и ближе россиянам.. мы действительно и не Запад и не Восток. У нас отдельная цивилизация Север. С востоком нас близит приоритет общего гад частным. Чего нет на Западе

Не устали на нее давить? С чего Вы взяли , что она хочет стать гражданкой России? Она ( если я правильно понял) только подала заявку, на вид на жительство. Что дает ей только, некоторые преимущества. Да и не говорила она, что она хочет стать гражданкой России. У меня друг кубинец, прожил в Питере 7 лет, а в итоге стал гражданином Китая. Не надо на нее давить, такими выражениями

It seems to me Gabrielle come from a rather affluent protected environment. If you compare china to us, china is already a paradise, with very low to almost no crimes, no homeless, no graffiti...
It's called a dictatorship
There only the state has the right to commit crimes just like in the US
just a few points:
not all western apps are banned, only ones that don't adher to chinese laws. I will just give one example, adult content. google chose to leave china rather than filter any content at all, thus it and all its subsidiaries don't operate in china. apple and microsoft adjust their products accordingly and thus you can use them in china without the need for a vpn.
politeness is relative. a better term is cultural difference because some things that are considered polite in the west would be rude in chinese culture. example, childern are taught to greet people loudly, so they can be heard. when you meet your uncle, you should raise your voice 'uncle!'. by being shy and not addressing loud enough, you are showing disrespect. in western culture, your actions might be reserved in order as not to be judged. in china, no one will judge you so do as you like as long as you aren't intruding or hurting anyone else.
there are nearly 10000 cafes in shanghai so I'm not sure what places your penpal took you. starbucks should be all over the place and there are chinese equivalents(luckin coffee) not to mention independent western style cafes. yes tea is much more popular but you shouldn't have to walk far to find good coffee.
in most se asian countries you bring your own paper, wet wipes, hand sanitizer, etc for restrooms so it's the same in china. some in tourist areas do have paper but one should always be prepared. and of course people wash their hands, come on. maybe you just encountered some slobs but you shouldn't assume everyone is like that. if you are in less touristy areas, yes it might not be as well maintained but that's in a lot of places in the world. maybe russia or france has clean restrooms everywhere I dont know but come to the usa, you will see some filthy public restrooms lol.

I actually only stayed in Shanghai for 1 day, but in other smaller cities I didn't see many coffee shops 🤔 but many tea shops 😌

Welcome to China! I'm surprised you didn't like the shrimp dish for I thought French people were generally comfortable with seafood and have a variety of seafood dishes on their menu.
On the hot water preference in China it actually has a historical background. During the Korean War in the 1950s, the Americans used the biological warfare on China and North Korea. As a result the rivers near the Chinese-North Korean border were filled with harmful bacteria.
So the PRC government at that time called on all Chinese citizens to boil the water before drinking to prevent infection. Since then boiling water has become a habit of Chinese people and lasted till today.
And those shop assistant in Beijing they don't only do that to foreigners, as a local I sometimes get awkward too when they won't leave me alone but I've adapted. Afterall they are just doing their jobs.
Anyway it's nice to see you had a good time. China is a massive country and some places hardly have foreign visitors throughout the year so not many foreign adaptions. But as it becomes more convenient for foreigners to get a visa this will get better.
Oh I like shrimps, but not when they stare at me from the soup, with little reproachful eyes! 👀

As a Chinese who lives in Europe, this is one of the most objective views of China. It's an amazing country with rich history and culture. However, it's still got a long way to go. Everything been developing so fast in recent decades, people just didn't have the chance to be educated/civilized. If you look at the younger generations, it's much better. Though this will be a continuous effort for several generations.
That said, it's still a great country in the sense that it give millions of normal people like me a chance to choose how we want to live our lifes, which was absolutely impossible for my parents/grandparents. This all happens in short 30 years. For that, I'm deeply greatful.
Hope you will go back to China in the future since there's so much more interesting things waiting.

Интересный ролик получился. Хотел разбить просмотр на части, не удержался, досмотрел до конца. В своё время работал в пароходстве, обошел всю юго-восточную азию. Другая планета, этим и интересна. Впечатления на всю жизнь. Не знаю как сейчас, в моё время китайцы курили буквально везде, причем какой-то свой специфический ароматный табак, запах которого долго преследует.
