I've received a lot of positive reception and negative reception on this video, and I very much appreciate it!
I am proud of the jokes, the storytelling structure and the songs, and I'm glad a lot of people enjoyed it.
However I also glossed over a large chunk of newer rhythm games/mobile games that a lot of people are very passionate over. I wanted to go more in detail at the end, but I made the decision to value storytelling rather than pay homage to the recent resurgence of rhythm games. Rather than a small collage at the end and "until a company can breathe life back into rhythm games" I should have gone more into detail, and I love seen some excellent points and feedback that I admire VERY VERY much.
I played over 150 rhythm games in total, and this video took 9 months to make, and honestly I just wanted to get it out and over with. Which in hindsight I could have handled it a little better.
I value all of your feedback cause this has been an excellent lesson in trying to constantly one up my content, and I hope you stick around to see what comes next and how I can improve after reflection on this video!
I'm curious now, of the 50 that didn't make it into the video, was Harmoknight on the list? Once of the few I've played and actually enjoyed!
i really enjoyed this video, you're really underrated
After working on a video for that long, it makes sense to want to stop it there.
And since I'm already here, I might as well ask if you've played "Rhythm Doctor"? It's a pretty delightful "one button rhythm game" with a nice little story and fun music.
I’m surprised you didn’t talk about any of the rhythm arcade games in the Asian countries such as Maimai, chunithm, Dance Evolution, and others
"I played 101 rhythm games"
[Plays most of the bad ones]
whats the fun in playing good ones when you can play bad ones and shit on them
Most of these games are the most popular and loved rhythm games in the entirety of America and a lot of them are pretty good. Dk what you're on about
@@tnovuh be fuckin for real do you think that literally anyone who clicked on this video thought he was gonna play multiple variations of guitar hero, three Singstar games, and Kuma Uta? It should've been, AT MOST, 2 Guitar Heroes, 1 Singstar game, and idk maybe a rhythm game that has modern relevance?
@@idontknowwhattoput5851 When I clicked on this video, I expected to watch a dude play a bunch of mainstream, nostalgic, and random rhythm games. That's exactly what I got. Also, a pretty sizable amount of the rhythm games talked about or mentioned in this video have modern relevance and are some of the most POPULAR and commonly talked about rhythm games I've played, and heard about over the years. This video was also obviously made for fun and is only 30 minutes. It's not a 2 and a half hour long retrospective video essay about the history of rhythm games and their importance to culture or something. And lastly, I've seen so many videos that almost exclusively talk about mainstream rhythm games so seeing random ones like Singstar get brought back up after years of not hearing that name was actually pretty entertaining and refreshing. Lighten up a bit. Life is more fun that way
@tnovuh I am not saying that Singstar shouldn't have been included, but 3 games is like very excessive. Listen, I'd be perfectly fine w him just putting 5 repeats of each game, but he should at least put a disclaimer of that at the start of the video. When people think "101 rhythm games" the expectation is 101 DIFFERENT rhythm games, not 80 different rhythm games and then 3-5 variations of the same few rhythm games for the last few. I am not expected a super retrospective video, but it would've been nice if he at least acknowledged the repeats, cause that aint what some people are looking for. I enjoyed the video myself, but acting as if he did exactly what people thought he would is completely and utterly delusional, and its a perfectly valid thing to be disappointed about. And I dont even dislike the video, its just that people should be allowed to have different expectations of what the video could've been as long as they aint hating on him for it. No ones mad here, you just assume that we hatin' cause you're the one who cant tell the difference between a joke, an opinion, a criticism, and a hate comment. Also, I just said the modern relevance line in relation to your comment, cause god knows that its a lie when you said majority of the games here are the most popular ever, of course him talking about obscure games is fine. In fact, my comment isn't even supposed to be a direct criticism of him or his video in the first place, I only made the comment because I wanted to defend OPs comment from you, lol.
he glossed over taiko 😭
i am not amused.. IT DIDNT EVEN SHOW GAMEPLAY IT WAS JUST A CUTSCENE FROM THE OLD GAMES
31:43 It was also at the timestamp in the reply to @@sixsixonefour reply to @squoosh8285 comment... Although it's edited.
28:54
Small correction! The costume scoring system ONLY applies to Project DIVA X and Project DIVA XHD. In every other instalment the costumes and accesories have NO effect on score, or timing and are only for aesthetic purposes!
Hope this helped! :3
this is so real of u bestie (also haiii :33)
also he put Project Diva F and F 2nd when he just showed gameplay of Future Tone lmao
the developer of osu! is not the same developer as elite beat agents, he only saw elite beat agents and wanted to create an emulator for pc that allowed users to create their own maps for it, it grew in popularity from word of mouth alone and has developed into what we know as osu! now. the name "osu!" also comes from the original japanese counterpart of elite beat agents called "Osu! Tatakae! Ouendan"
I can't believe Xalem made a whole video just to release his new hit single. and how is it better than 90% of songs released by top artists these days?!
I will forever remember that my first single was released the same day as Swift's Double Album
25:54
kinda wrong, peppy made osu! formerly as an elite beat agents emulator, and then it kinda grew into its own thing from there
Feel like I should mention this but Pump It Up & DDR are two different game series made by two different companies.
I had to mention this because you made it look like they were in the same ballpark.
23:00 WONDERHOY
HALLLOOOO
WHERE'S PROJECT SEKAI THEN??
WHY EMU OTORI IF NO PROJECT SEKAI
WAHAHA
YOKOSO KIRAKIRA DOKIDOKI MOCHIMOCHI POYOPOYO WAKUWAKU WASHOI NO WONDER STAGE
This gives me early scott the woz vubes
Gives me current Xalem vibes, I unno
Dude you deserve so much more attention, this video... rocks
Thanks bup!
I love how you went from Project Diva to Persona's rhythm games seeing as though Persona 4 Dancing all Night had Miku as DLC
Considering you have access to a round 1, I'd love to see a video about all the different arcade rhythm games there. I'm personally obsessed with a lot of those games, so seeing a sequel to this would be amazing :3
Maybe some shorts around it could be cool!
@@Xalem_Plays You also have a huge array of mobile rhythm games with various gimmicks, like multiple judgement lines, judgement lines that *move around*, tilt controls, and various other gimmicks.
@@Xalem_Plays if u play taiko… dont hit the drum hard pls
Great video!
Btw, at 21:17, the makers of rockband didn't copy singstar, they made a game prior to singstar called Karaoke Revolution.
They just implemented what they created into rockband.
There is some miss information. The DDR cabinet you labeled DDR 4 is actually the DDR A (Pronounce Ace) cabinet. It came out before the A20 (Ace Two Oh) Cabinet, the one you called 20th Anniversary which is correct since it's the gold model and not the blue. Osu! / Osu! Lazer on PC was not made by iNiS Corporation the developers of Osu! Tatakae! Ouendan (Known as Elite Beat Agents in the US) on the DS. Osu! / Osu Lazer on PC was made by Dean Herbert also known as Peppy. Great video otherwise
Love how Arknights OST was apparently used according to the description when they don't even have a rhythm game spin off, and only have collabs with Muse Dash and Cytus
Hearing the weezer riff in front of Um Jammer Lammy activated my fight or flight
Would you believe me if I said there was one other one you didn't catch? Mad Rat Dead is a rhythm platformer.
27:45 "Have you ever heard the music in star wars Kinect?" YES, and you picked the best parody from that game. Immediately started singing along and waving my arms like the move on screen. Love that song.
wow! this video is amazing! from the peak editing to having other people play off of your energy for some amazing bits, everything about the presentation of the video had my jaw dropped! i never thought that i needed an actual musician dissecting every single rhythm game known to man (including the persona rhythm games which i definitely did not expect) only to end out the video in an epic music video, but i am so glad that youtube recommended me this video! from now, i will be cheering you on on the sidelines, and i cannot wait to see what you do next!
this video was very well done. i loved the editing and there was some pretty hilarious moments. I'm hoping that if you ever make a follow up video on this, that you talk a tiny bit about spin rhythm xd. it's a really fun and unique rhythm game!!
Beatmania and beatmania iidx are considered different series
Yoo great video!! Really appreciated the two Taiko no tatsujin references lmao. Anyway, hilarious video, I really enjoyed it
This is bloody mint. Nice work dude. I understand the time and effort put into this AND THIS VIDEO DESERVES MORE ATTENTION. You are one of the most talented dudes I've seen on this website. Being able to play multiple instruments while also being able to master video games AND BE ABLE TO FILM AND EDIT HIGH QUALITY CONTENT? Like dude you are awesome and don't let these negative comments get to you. Keep it going dude! I genuinely think you can make it far on this website. I'm rooting for you!
very well made video, i enjoyed it! i hope it gets more views
great video, loved this format
Just stumbled across your channel. The format you use for your videos and how you engage with your viewers is honestly really catching. Definitely got a subscriber from me, look forward to binging your channel :)
oh wow :D you've gone through quite the journey!
i love the production of this video you've done fantastically
my favorite game of all time is actually "metal hellsinger" unironically.
This video was so damn good! The Donkey Konga line at the very end was the cherry on top! I am surprised you didn't mention the pro intrunent modes of Rock Band 3 tho. I think you would have really enjoyed them.
Super underrated, fun video man!
This video is so cool! How did you get your hands on all these games?
Brother this is one of the most fun and entertaining videos I've seen uploaded in a while. Can't wait to see what you make in the future.
I AM SEVERELY DISSAPOINTED THAT BEAT SABER GOT ONLY 1 SECOND OF GAMEPLAY. PLEASE. WE NEED MORE BEAT SABER. (at least i do)
Surpised the Pro-Instruments (sans the drums) for Rock Band 3 didn't get a mention.
Oh my god dude this is AMAZING!!! How do you have so few subs??? The production quality is amazing, and your original song (I think) at the end was great as well! As a fellow guitar player, I can appreciate the effort put in here. You've earned yourself a subscriber, keep up the good work :)
Underrated and That's alot of rhythm games geez!
wow super underated chanel . this was amazing
I throw around magnum opus a lot, but I know the STACKS of work that it took to make this and your love of music has never been more obvious! I only wish I could be the 5th backstreet boy
Really great video! I've been a huge rhythm game fan my whole life so it was fun go through the history of them, loved the song at the end as well! I'm surprised your channel isn't bigger, you've definitely earned a new subscriber!
Excuse the infodump, but I think Dance Central was actually a really well made game, at least 2 and 3 were! Dance Central 3 had a really neat feature where if you were struggling with a song it'd let you pick a move or part of the song and 'break it down' into a slow step by step on how to do it. Just Dance was good for turn your brain off fun, but Dance Central always felt like it also offered ways to help me improve and work towards perfecting the songs. Harmonix put a lot of love into that game and I felt like each iteration only got better!
Also I'm not sure if you're aware, but I think Project Diva X is the only release where the costumes affect your scores, in all the others the costumes are aesthetic only which feels much better to play!
I'm looking forward to seeing future videos from you, in the meantime it looks like I've got a lot of your previous ones to catch up on!
I've been wanting to compare the two, maybe for a short or so! That gives me some ideas and whatnot 👀
@@Xalem_Plays Thanks for the response! A video or short comparing the two made by you would be awesome! They're both really great games and were a big part of my life growing up, even if I am a little more biased towards DC.
michael jackson the experience is a game i remember playing im my after school program back in 2016 for wii. how i missed those days
the fact that you only have 7k subs is absolutely mind boggling
keep up the great work big dawg
Thanks! I appreciate kind words like these!
This quality with only 7k subs? Bro you deserve much more!!
The stick figure squat meme sent me, sub earned XD
You NEED more subs holy crap
Taylor Swift just dropped her new album and here I am listening to Right Now by Xalem... I'm okay with this.
My Roommate is playing Fortnite, and here I am listening to Fortnight.
*Gitaroo Man* mentioned. That's all I need
0:23
That Periphery shirt is so peak
23:01 WONDERHOY !!!!!!!
Loving the original piece! My only problem with it is that it ends when it feels like it's starting to pick up!
I WANT to do a second verse at some point. But I wanted to keep it simple for now. Know my limits. (:
(Will definitely update when there's a second verse though)
Gotta tell my kids that he is scott the woz
29:13
The scoring for PDX is unique to PDX, none of the other games have the scoring system with the costume + accessories and it is only in cloud requests + event requests ! I also found most of the time you don't really need them to beat the songs unless you are doing the event requests ! I also don't recommend fcing in cloud requests as it won't save as an fc in free play (because of the effects of some costumes)
Just think cloud/event requests to get the costumes and accessories and free play to actually get scores off of accuracy :3
harmonix made gh1/2/80's. when gh80's released, activision bought red octane and red octane owned the gh ip. then harmonix made rockband because they still liked the formula and wanted to keep making games like it. thats the story of what went down for rockband to be a thing for anyone that dont know
6:41 that wire shape💀💀💀
where the heck was space channel 5 or rhythm thief? project sekai? melatonin? groove coaster? or the kindom hearts rhythm game?
For Context at 7:21 the song is Night of Nights by COOL&CREATE Based on Touhou 6
This video is sick! Hope this goes viral!
Thanks Gus!
I would like to suggest beat hazard games. The concept is that you put music in then do a bullet hell like game that’s in sync with the music you chose. Just the first one is already insanely good, the only problem is it is unbelievably epileptic with so many god damn flashing lights. Other than that this was a great video to watch.
31:33 You thought you could sneak him in
WHAT THIS DESERVES SO MUCH MORE ATTENTION ITS SO GOOD
THANKS LOSER!!!
Metal Hellsinger is my newest favorite rhythm game since guitar hero
holy fuck i just started this video drunk and suffered from audio whiplash
Great video and awesome new song from the legend himself !
Thank you thank you! (Now available on streaming platforms)
0:44 Nice D5 bro
Beep bop bap be bop bap-
also osu! isnt made by the guys who made EBA
it was a fanmade version that ended up growing into its own thing
Skipped through the whole vid tryna find friday night funkin. Afterthoughts? Dissapointment.
THE MAN, THE MYTH, THE XALEM HAS RETURNED! It's Awesome to see you back
buddy!
Nice to see you here too Brandon!
Adding a comment to bump the algorithm. This was a really fun video to watch
There's a lot more rhythm games than i thought
Might be my fav video you have done
Awww, thanks Gummy! I'm sorry there wasn't more Muse Dash representation!
Pretty good video, funny and nicely produced!, it was nice to see this list of games, I also like rhythm games despite that I'm a horrendous player on them (lol).
But still I'm kind surprised that you missed some titles like SingStar Guitar and SingStar Dance (in which born the serie DanceStar/Everybody Dance), the Konami's Pop'n Music, the game Child of Eden (made by the creator of Rez), Space Channel 5, the other Guitar Hero's clone called Power Gig or even those games that you need a real guitar to play it like Rocksmith (and the Bass one) or Bandfuse and well... the tons of unique rhythm games made by either small or indie studios, such as:
Beat.Trip series (including Runner)
Retro/Grade
Crypt of the NecroDancer
Rock of the Dead
No Straights Road
Auditorium HD
Beat Hazard Ultra
Unbeatable
Sayonara Wild Hearts
Laserlife
Etc...
But still after you tested 101 games probably you felt a burnout and don't want to see again a rhythm game in your life. 😂
was that IceJJ Fish singing i want it that way in that one game?
i thought i was seeing things when i saw gwimbly in the ending montage
What a gem 💎
5:32 that's actually footage of pump it up, not DDR
A Musician Playing Rhythm Games 👏
not gonna lie I hate seeing the genre being missrepresented this badly
1:41 great days
Honestly, despite how taxing it may be to play rhythm games constantly in a stretch if you want to do a follow-up video I would suggest the fan communities of OSU! Guitar Hero (Clone Hero) and FNF (Friday Night Funkin) as those communities hard carry having consistent charts to be challenged by. FNF might shock you with how insane the community is about the mods if you at least choose to ignore drama that seems to rise up a bunch. Would also like to see the footage in which you played these possibly uploaded to YT as it seems that your thoughts weren't fully portrayed when you went into montage mode.
I would rather recommend stepmania/osu!mania over FNF if you don't care about presentation and just want to play a bunch of songs.
Honestly don't even get into the mods. The base game is perfect and less of a hassle to play.
Cinder is gorgeous.
random lick in the beninging 😂
I would like to add my two favorite mobile rythm games: Cytus (Specifically Cytus 2) and Phigros!
Why was Guitarmania/Guitarfreak's music Overpass from Gitaroo Man???
*ddr*
*pump it up is shown*
this hurts me way more than it should :'D
16:10 what is that on the right of quiet riot ? XD
I miss the DS era and it's rhythm games so much it's unreal.
If you want a really good rhythm game I’d recommend metal hellsinger it’s very very good
Its so wierd to know that the third entry of a rhythm game is the best entry
16:54 Disney is totally coming for you! lmfao
I just started watching, I hope idol master Cinderella girls is here
Why is satan singing weezer
This better be a musical
I'm pleased.
23:02 EMU OTORI O.O
Sorry I’m late to the video, but the 9 months of work really paid off! Thanks for going through all the rhythm games for our enjoyment! Btw how do your fingers feel after all of that?
NOT GOOD SOFA
My guy played every rhythm game except mobile rhythm games
ALL THE PARAPPA GAMES YEAHHHHHH
Personally I think Miku makes every Rythem Game better
Great video, reminds me of all the nights I got in trouble playing guitar hero way past my bed time and getting grounded
I couldn't do that! Guitar strum bar was WAY too loud
The Project Diva thing is incorrect by the way--just throwing that in there :P You can play the game without adjusting the outfits at all and not have to worry about it whatsoever. That's how I play. Passing a song is entirely dependent on your skill at the game.
No clone hero and a dance of fire and ice...
and no rhythm doctor :(
havent finished the video yet, that sucks
@@Randommmmmmmmmhow could he leave out the best rhythm game of all time wtf
Lets gooooooooooooooooo beat saber mentioned at Entry 95
32:09, wait why was beat saber last?
Also wheres ADOFAI, Sound Voltex, Quaver, Geometry dash, And Muse Dash? this makes me sad :(
Muse Dash was actully the last one. It just goes very fast. Don't know about the others tho.
