CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Melvin (Jack Nicholson) reluctantly takes Verdell the dog when his neighbor is hospitalized.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
James L. Brooks (Terms of Endearment, Broadcast News) directed this $50 million-plus romantic comedy, set in Manhattan. Dysfunctional, acid-tongued romance novelist Melvin Udall (Jack Nicholson), who suffers from an obsessive-compulsive disorder, takes pride in his ability to offend. At a nearby cafe, the only waitress willing to stand up to his sarcastic tirades is Carol Connelly (Helen Hunt), a single mother struggling to raise her chronically asthmatic son. In Melvin's West Village apartment building, talented contemporary artist Simon Nye (Greg Kinnear) lives across the hall from Melvin. Simon is the current darling of the New York art world, reason enough to draw Melvin's verbal fire, but Simon's gay lifestyle is further grist for the novelist's malicious mill. These three New Yorkers, none of whom appears to have a chance in hell at finding true happiness, discover their fates intertwined because of the fourth complicated character in the piece, Verdell, a tiny Brussels Griffon dog (played by newcomer Jill, after a 15-week training program). Melvin seems to have no friends or family, and he lives alone, working on his 62nd book. When Simon goes into the hospital after a brutal mugging, Melvin has to take care of Verdell, and the dog actually warms Melvin's cold heart -- to the degree that he sets up unsolicited medical care for Carol's son. Eventually, Melvin is cornered into driving Simon and Carol to Baltimore, and during a hotel stopover, Melvin confesses to Carol, "You make me want to be a better man." The trip becomes an odyssey of self-realization for all three. Locations included Brooklyn's Prospect Park (Carol's neighborhood) and Greenwich Village (where Melvin's building is on 12th Street between Fifth and Sixth Avenues). Other exteriors were shot in downtown Los Angeles, where a dilapidated transient hotel at the corner of 4th Street and Main was transformed into the chic cafe where Carol works. Sets for the Simon/Melvin apartment interiors were erected on a soundstage at the Sony Pictures lot. Simon's paintings were created for the film by New York artist Billy Sullivan, whose work is part of the modern art collection at NYC's Metropolitan Museum of Art and the New Orleans Museum of Art.

I love this movie. The dog was the best thing that ever happened to him. And it's based on actual stories of people having OCD and anxiety issues that improved by having a dog. Usually more effective than having a cat. So yeah. A good dog is worth more than all the gold in the world.
The thing is, almost all dogs are good ones :)
That's all well and good, but was it necessary to turn that into a 'dog vs. cat' comment?
This is why dog people piss me off sometimes lol.
Yeah as if cats can't help people out too
@@leah-marie5031 Cats can help allot. I was being bias in that comment. It's just that most cats sort of have their own thing going on. I've had military friends that had a cat that helped them through their PTSD... but I also dated women who had many cats and it damn near gave me PTSD. lol...
@@anthonysoto1615 cats are selfish animals. Any animal who has a mentality that i live with it is a worthless pet
Verdell best dog actor. All scenes are great with him
@degree7 But Jill got billing.
And what’s super impressive is that you really can’t tell where the trainer is. So many times you know exactly what’s going on and it’s distracting. This was very well done. The one thing that IS a problem is that they used so many different dogs to play Verdell. They don’t even look alike (even in this scene there are multiple dogs used) and that is a distraction.
The first time he gets unconditional love is from his neighbor’s dog. That is so true. Animals don’t care about your faults.
The dog running around frantically after it knows it's stuck inside its enemy 's apartment. How did they manage to make it act so well???
Dogs are very forgiving
Probably with treats
I've had a Brussels Griffon for a couple years now and it just behaves that way naturally.
Great little dog love that face it's to die for.
She was the sweetest dog ever❤️
He looks like an ewok so cute💗
The dog should have won the best supporting actor in this movie.
With the competition that year he was a shoe in.
Nah the dog is the real star
True, the doggo made the movie great
Verdell was one of the best things about As Good As It Gets. I can relate to the movie because I have Asperger syndrome and I had a friend, a dog called Beau and my heart was broken when he died. I now I have another friend, a cat named Fluffy who means a lot to me. Melvin may not had liked Verdell, but he grew to love him and gave him some humanity and helped him become a better man.
Verdell make him want to be a better man
It's beginning to make sense now. Well, to me anyway and it's so simple. Verdell was written to give Melvin humanity and to help make him become a better person.
Verdell upstaged Nickleson in this scene. He was one of the best method actors that ever gnawed a bone. I heard that he studied his craft with slavislaski. He was also great to work with and he never complained to the director, especially when there were doggie treats available.
I know I am late, but it`s Stanislavski not Slavislavski.
Slobberslavski. I believe is the correct name of one that developed canine method.
0:10 Watching the dog running around in the apartment, looking for a place to hide, is just so funny.
Verdel barking at the food cracks me up. He's like "what the hell is this???"
fell in love with that lil dog
She was the best dog ever!
It's amazing how an animal can tame his cold heart 😂... that dog is too cute...💖
MsMimilala love this scene
animal can do stuff than humans cant since they dont judge you for what you are and love you uncondicional
Griffons (the dogs breed) are like that
Verdell was the only one that saw any good in him, so Melvin grew to love him
Omg the dog is insanely cute
This was one of my favorite scenes. Tells him he won't get dog food for him and I thought he would just feed him food scraps instead but then he proceeds to take a premium roast out of the fridge lol.
When a cute dog can upstage the great jack Nicholson, now that says history.
Verdell shares the academy award with Jack!
He's a big softie inside. Check out the roast beef coming out of the fridge, lucky dog! This is a Brussels Griffon dog, and her name is Jill and she is from Texas. Cutest thing.
That dog is so adorable!
Bacon- the universal ice breaker for dogs everywhere:-)
ɷɷɷɷ I Havee Watchedd This Movieee Leakedd Versionn Hereee : - t.co/SjZpZXw5gt
The dog is so sweet. At first, he runs around Melvin’s apartment, then hides when Melvin approaches. Finally, he reappears again. This film goes to show you that dogs can melt even the coldest hearts with time.
verdell is adoooooooorrrrrrrrrable!😊💓
I'm not remotely a Dog Person but I'm TOTALLY In Love with this Sweetie 💖
I named my cat after Verdell! Such a legend.
Animals are amazing. They read us all so well. I watch my friend's pug from time to time. Little guy has me trained. Can't say no to him. So admittedly I am a sap when it comes to dogs 😂
"you'll eat what we got, what we eat"
the dog should ve got an oscar
Verdell is so cute in this movie!!
Verdall crawling on his stomach just plucks at my heart strings
1:05 you're dead. lololol
Very cute, but where was the part where they're sitting at the typewriter, and he finishes his book, and he's very happy, and says "I hate the doggie, oh yes, I hate the doggie." One of my favourite scenes.
I love this movie so much. I want a dog like Verdell 😍
I like how had says....don't u do anything! 😂💓
The dog looks like an ewok, so cute💗
The cutest dog ever
That face! Smooch!

teenie beenie I remember when I was a kid I wanted this dog but I ended up with a yorkie I called him Lucas. He was such a sweetdog and troublemaker. He was pastaway this year.
Past away this year.
We got a Griffon, he turned 6 this year, my mum picked him out before she passed away, best dog we’ve ever had
As god as it's get , is one of my favourite movies
The top Verdell dog a female dog lived with Nicholson during the movie shoot.
"You're taking him! Yes, yes you are! Get the hell out of the way!"
This is the best movie ever
Where's The Trust.
lol
I love this film! Jack Nicholson is without a doubt a terrific amazing best Actor and the dog is so cute🥺🥰!!! The first time I saw this film was I would say 4 or 5 couldn’t understand nothing but I did went cutie crazy for the dog and still do! I hope to maybe have a cute fur buddy like Verdell! He’s so cute🥺!!
Боже какой милый пёс.очень выразительная мордочка.
Oh no!
I have to eat Roast Beef and Bacon instead of Dog Food?!?!?
Oh the Humanity!!!😂
It saddens me to know that as I type. Verdell has been dead for many years.
Wonderful movie
that dog is soooo cuteee😍
That doggie was cute!😄
Verdell was Melvin's heart.
~Verdell!~Jill!~gorgeous little dog`adorable!😀😃😄😁😆😅🤣😂🙂🙃😊😇🥰😍🤩😘~HOPE ''SHE'S'' still around~❤❤💋💋👌✌👋👋
Verdell made me fall in love with this movie ❤
Jack and verdell, simply the best
"NOBODY'S EVER BEEN IN HERE BEFORE!"
That line just goes to show what a reclusive and lonesome individual Melvin really is.
That dog is a superb actor
This dog breed is a gem
Looks like the tiny dog version of ZZ Top
Such a cute dog
I hope the dog doesn't die in this movie.
The dog was a good actor
There are two kinds of people: people who like dogs, and people who have never had a dog!
Verdell uses method acting.
the poor dog❤❤❤❤😢
U'll eat what we got, what we eat. Don't you do anything!😊
1:56 is like a scene out of a TV show which an actor provides the dog's voice.
My mom told me she cried when the dog stared at Jack when she and my dad went to see this in theaters when it first came out
Verdell is actually a female Jill from Irvine Calif - we have 2 though we kept them cut more - sister rough coat and brother smooth coat- one dies June 2014 at almost 12yr and the sister dies this year at 14 yrs - smartest easiest to train and stubborn too! looking to get new ones soon will never have another breed
Jill was my grandmothers dog! She’s was the sweetest
❤ Brussels griffons
He called his helper "Verdell" in the movie The Witches of Eastwick.
Actually, it's Fidel
you’ll eat what we eat, you’ll eat what we got.
That was a pretty big gamble by Frank….Melvin could’ve easily lost it and killed the dog…..
Golden compass had something right ,every one had a demon 🦍🐕🐱🦁🐎🐆🦜🦋
James Harden is the best name for this dog
where's the trust?
It cuts off before he starts playing the piano...
This is 1 of my favorite breed of dogs minus Shih Tzu you must love all Dogs , Dogs never hurt you they only love you anyone who is ever mean or hurts 💔 a DOG Shàaaaaame on you I just lost my best friend
This used to be free on you tube cuz I watched it here free
love
Which dog breed is it?
It's a Brussels Griffon
it’s an ewok
Where's the trust?
Does anyone know what kind of dog Verdell is?
+Penny Thatcher Verdell is a Brussels Griffon, also known by the French name Griffon Bruxellois, played by Jill and five doubles: Timer, Sprout, Debbie, Billy, and Parfait.
+Uyarasuk thanks for the info. 😉 I somehow found out that Verdell was a Brussels Griffon but he didn't look like any that I looked up. Verdell is much cuter so I thought somehow somewhere someone made a mistake. Thanks for clearing that up for me. ✌
The guy just wants to keep to himself as he gets easily overwhelmed by others. Yes, he is rude, but that's it. Yet somehow we are supposed to be okay with how often everyone just threatens him.
This puppy 🐶 is eating better than homeless people!!!!
Ok, I love the relationship between Jack and the dog. But, some sick kid that can sprint, like Usain Bolt, along side a bus! Helen Hunt's kid? F'him,(the son) I save the dog. Keepin' it real....
Wasn’t that jack nicholsons dog in real life .
GOD, I HATE THOSE COMMERCIALS SO MUCH!
What kind of dog is Verdell?
Verdell is a Brussels Griffon also called Griffon Bruxellois. I have one!
I currently own 2! They are the best!❤
never work with kids or animals
狗界梁朝偉 請追加影帝給他
They cute that dogs hair to make it look as ugly as possible.
So z
I keep watching this movie over and over and never get tired of the great performances here, well, maybe just Helen Hunt's character, I feel she was WAY too bland and meh, and I know it's mostly because Carol was supposed to be like that but I still don't like that character, am I the only one who feels like this?
I liked Carol. And I don't think she was bland.
First comment, early on. Now how the f did I end up here.
It irritates me that they used multiple dogs in this scene. It’s so distracting because they don’t even look alike.
The script of Jack's character and life was perfect. Adding Verdell, a griffon bruxellois that are cute as hell into the script and helping jack's character was the icing on the cake. And Nicholson won an Academy Award...i wonder if he thought he would win won when he read the script?
The script is okay that fits him more to act believable
That dog pisses me off
Where's the trust?
