CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Melvin (Jack Nicholson) meets a female fan (Julie Benz) and manages to insult her almost immediately.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
James L. Brooks (Terms of Endearment, Broadcast News) directed this $50 million-plus romantic comedy, set in Manhattan. Dysfunctional, acid-tongued romance novelist Melvin Udall (Jack Nicholson), who suffers from an obsessive-compulsive disorder, takes pride in his ability to offend. At a nearby cafe, the only waitress willing to stand up to his sarcastic tirades is Carol Connelly (Helen Hunt), a single mother struggling to raise her chronically asthmatic son. In Melvin's West Village apartment building, talented contemporary artist Simon Nye (Greg Kinnear) lives across the hall from Melvin. Simon is the current darling of the New York art world, reason enough to draw Melvin's verbal fire, but Simon's gay lifestyle is further grist for the novelist's malicious mill. These three New Yorkers, none of whom appears to have a chance in hell at finding true happiness, discover their fates intertwined because of the fourth complicated character in the piece, Verdell, a tiny Brussels Griffon dog (played by newcomer Jill, after a 15-week training program). Melvin seems to have no friends or family, and he lives alone, working on his 62nd book. When Simon goes into the hospital after a brutal mugging, Melvin has to take care of Verdell, and the dog actually warms Melvin's cold heart -- to the degree that he sets up unsolicited medical care for Carol's son. Eventually, Melvin is cornered into driving Simon and Carol to Baltimore, and during a hotel stopover, Melvin confesses to Carol, "You make me want to be a better man." The trip becomes an odyssey of self-realization for all three. Locations included Brooklyn's Prospect Park (Carol's neighborhood) and Greenwich Village (where Melvin's building is on 12th Street between Fifth and Sixth Avenues). Other exteriors were shot in downtown Los Angeles, where a dilapidated transient hotel at the corner of 4th Street and Main was transformed into the chic cafe where Carol works. Sets for the Simon/Melvin apartment interiors were erected on a soundstage at the Sony Pictures lot. Simon's paintings were created for the film by New York artist Billy Sullivan, whose work is part of the modern art collection at NYC's Metropolitan Museum of Art and the New Orleans Museum of Art.

I saw this movie when I was 17, I thought that was an OK joke.
Now in my 40’s, it prophetic wisdom.
Lol

then you have become dumb its just a joke your now taking seriously based on your confirmation bias
A lot of guys here in the comments who say it's true are in their 40s.
I think that has to do with their experiences with middle age women. Often they take on a masculine air and aggression. They become impatient and cranky, i.e. less reasonable. They blame everyone else more for everything, i.e. personally unaccountable. And there you have it: they start to resemble men minus reason and accountability - more so than the younger women.
So lesson to ladies: Remember your sweetness and empathy and don't be Karens! And the world will be a better place, and Mr Udall will be proven wrong.

A simple example with my wife to demonstrate this truth:
Our recycle container gets picked up once a week but has limited space. So, when I get something delivered in a large cardboard box I break it down before disposing to conserve space, because otherwise we’ll run out. My wife just puts the box in the receptacle as-is. My wife does not REASON.
Within a few days the recycling bin is overflowing due to the large box (if I ever catch it I’ll break it down my self, but sometimes I don’t) and my wife is complaining that there is never any room in the bin. I tell her that it is her fault for not breaking down the large box; she deflects and says that she “forgot” or doesn’t “have time for that.” My wife lacks ACCOUNTABILITY.
So yeah, this is spot-on.
Did you also lack reason when she chose to marry you? Seems like it.

I wondered who she is. Thanks for answering! She's perfectly cast.
Over 20 years later, I finally know exactly what he means, and no truer words have been spoken in a movie.
The look on Nicholson's face when he turns to address her question: I'm thinking: 'Here it comes!'
One of the often-overlooked aspects of his genius craft in this scene is how he springs into the elevator and instinctively stands a little too close to the man inside, as if to say "oh my goodness, yes! A man. A safe place! My tribe..." and then separates once he is aware of how awkwardly close he is. It was a master class in the physical signalling of his psyche.
I think it was more of him taking his usual place/spot in the elevator and then recognizing he is too close to another person and instinctively moves away to a safe space..... agree to disagree, I suppose....
Nah I I agree with the latter.
He's misanthropic toward everyone - not really a masculine tribalist. The character in this movie is quite anti-social generally and has some autistic spectrum type tics and OCD.
He had ocd in the movie and couldn't stand contact/contamination from others.
Maybe is not politically correct what he said, but its absolute true, especially the accountability part
As a woman, I dare say even I have to agree with his statement. We as women a lot of times can be unreasonable and we definitely don't accountability when we do wrong. My mother for instance was a spoiled brat growing up and became a selfish, cold woman. Eventually as a result of that, a lot of her family never really spoke to her much anymore. She of course, swore up and down to anyone naive enough to listen that they betrayed her and did her wrong, meanwhile obviously that wasn't true. At least they got out. I wasn't so lucky, at first anyway. I had to put up with her childish behavior, doing ridiculous things for her like cooking her meals, with a microwave, not a stove for the record. I had to do her laundry and even if she was right upstairs from the basement to get her laundry, she would call me from all the way upstairs in my room to go down there and get it. It was ridiculous. She would also berate and abuse any good man that came into her life and thankfully for them, they had the smarts to leave her. And if that wasn't bad enough, she married a man who would verbally abuse and at one point put his hands on me. When I told her about it, she of course denied and quite honestly didn't really care, but she just didn't wanna admit it, out loud anyway. Then, to add insult to injury, she would recruit my father to defend her as though she were his daughter instead of me and he defends her like there's no tomorrow. Eventually, I got out and as it turns out, he started abusing her. People tell her to leave, but naturally, she doesn't care what others think and stays with his behind. I'm like it serves her right. People say I'm mean for that, but I don't care. I hold her accountable for her own actions and problems she has caused herself the same way I would hold a man accountable. She's an adult and needs to start acting like one. It's karma biting her. It doesn't always come when you call, but it's always on time. Women do have a lot of growing up to do, especially mentally. Hate if you want to, but if you do it's only because you know it's true.
Great. Your taking your first steps into a larger world....
Speak for yourself. Most people doing dumb things for no reason are men, that's why they don't live as long.
Yeah, I think the spoiled brat part is key here. When I was growing up, I got told boys don't cry and to man up and own my actions and pay for them. While plenty of girls around me were raised well, there were also plenty who got consoled any time the tears came out, whether the tears were justified or not. We're too kind to women when they exhibit bad behavior, and should redirect that kindness to giving them even more when they show good behavior. If we don't, we get dozens of adults in everyone's life who are entitled, especially when their emotions are negative. I'm not saying don't console your daughter, I'm just saying don't console her when it was her actions that directly brought her the result making her cry.
One of the best quotes from one of the greatest films ever made. I so miss the days of good, well written films.
Everyone wants to talk about the "writing about women" thingy. What I love about this scene is a writer's awkwardness to everything. Even when he gets into the elevator.

One reason it is so funny is because it is absolutely true. When was the the last time a woman in your life apologized and owned up to something she did wrong? The flip side of that is I think attributable to Buddy Hackett who said the reason why his marriage turned out successfully was because every morning he would wake up, shut off the alarm clock, roll over to face his wife and say “Honey, I’m sorry.”
