Cantiga 315 - Tant' aos peccadores

Esta es cómo Santa María curó en Atocha que es un lugar que está junto a Madrid, a un niño que tenía una espiga de trigo en el vientre.
"Tanto vale de grado la Virgen a los pecadores que es muy digno que se alabe siempre a su santo nombre."
Y acerca de esto ahora os contaré un milagro, si me prestaís atención, sabroso de oir y que sucedió en un lugar religioso que hay junto a Madrid, en Atocha.
Una desgraciada mujer que moraba en una aldea, junto a Madrid, criaba a un hijo pequeño que tenía y que quería más que a sí mismo y que le habría perdido si, no lo hubiese guardado la bendita Virgen, como veremos.
Pues bien, aquella mujer fue con otras a espigar, según hemos oído y llevó a su pequeño en brazos.
Y cuando fue a entrar al campo de las mieses, donde las otras ya estaban espigando, arrimó al niño a los haces de trigo que estaban allí hacinados y se lo encomendó a la Virgen para que lo guardase. Inmediatamente el niño agarró una espiga grande, llena toda de granos, y se la metió en la boca y se la tragó, lo que hizo que se sintiera mal y que el vientre le creciera desmesuradamente.
Al ver esto la madre le entró tal zozobra que pensó que había muerto para su desgracia y se lo llevó a Madrid, muy hinchado, pensando que era debido al veneno de una serpiente o de una araña, como suele ocurrir y sospechando se le moriría, ¡tal mal estaba!
Estando así le aconsejaron que le llevase a Santa María de Atocha, nuestro espejo, pues su lugar pertenecía a su Concejo y allí Dios le mostraría un gran milagro.
La mujer cogió a su hijo y corriendo se fue con él, llorando mucho y gritando decía: "Virgen Santa María, yo creo que tú puedes sanar a mi hijo, a pesar de que ha pasado mucho tiempo".
Cuando estuvieron en la iglesia, ella y sus vecinas cogieron al niño y le pusieron ante el altar y, al desnudarlo para ver si tenía algún bulto, vieron que el mozo que estaba todo hinchado, pero no vieron otra cosa que la espiga que le salía por el costado izquierdo.
Al ver esto la gente, dieron loores a Dios y a su Madre, la Señor de los señores, que tales milagros hace y aún otros mayores, por los que sea su nombre siempre glorificado.

This is how Holy Mary cured a little boy in Atocha, which is near Madrid, who had a head of wheat in his stomach.
"The Virgin so graciously and generously aids sinners that Her holy name should be greatly praised."
Concerning this, there happened a very beautiful miracle, most agreeable to hear, which Holy Mary performed near Madrid in Atocha, a holy place. I shall tell it to you now, if you will hear it.
In a village near Madrid there lived a poor woman, and she reared the little son that she had, whom she loved more than herself. She would have lost him if he had not been protected by the Blessed Virgin. We shall tell you how it happened. That poor woman, as we learned, went to glean with some others and, as we heard, she had carried her son, that little boy, along.
When she entered the field where the other women were gleaning, she propped the little boy up against the sheaves which were formed from many spikes of grain that all were gathering and commended him to Holy Mary's care. Soon the little boy found a large head of wheat, heavy with grain, which he put in his mouth and swallowed in an instant, which then gave him such distress that his belly swelled up alarmingly. When the mother saw this, she was very troubled, because she thought he would surely die because of this misfortune, and, all swollen up as he was, she carried him to Madrid.
Thinking that his malady was because of poison of a snake or spider, as such a swelling usually is, she tended him several days in this painful condition, constantly fearing he would die of suffocation.
While she was in this affliction, they advised her to take him to Holy Mary of Atocha, who is our mirror, and do it publicly, for God would perform a wonderful miracle.
The woman picked up her son at once and went running with him, weeping and wailing and sayind: "Holy Virgin Mary, as I believe and understand, you can cure my son in a short time."
When she entered the church, she and her neighbors immediately laid him before the altar and at once undressed him completely to see if he had sustained a bite or wound anywhere.
As they undressed the child, they looked and observed closely how he was all swollen, but they detected nothing until they saw the head of wheat coming out of his left side, whole and intact.
When the people saw this, they all gave praise to God and His Mother, Queen of queens, who performs such miracles as this, and others much greater. Therefore, may Her name be glorified.
