- Caterpillar well known for construction equipment like bull dozers teamed up with German combine manufacture Claas in 1997 to introduce the Caterpillar Lexion 400 Series of combines in North America. Class has offered combines in North America since 1966. Class first introduced it's combines to customers in the United States and Canda by building combines for Ford Motors. In this video viewers will see a Caterpillar Lexion 460 and 480 combine harvesting soybeans in Wisconsin as well seeing other Claas built combines like the Ford 642, Caterpillar 570R and Claas 780TT.

This farmer from italia greatly appreciates your videos. We dream of land like you have there in your states. Thank you Sir.
Thank you for watching. I enjoy watching farming in Italy. It looks like you contend with allot of slopes and hills.
I don’t recall ever seeing straw from bean fields being baled. Interesting!
Yeah I agree with you on that. Never seen it either down here in the southeast
We’ve baled some before. Makes decent feed. Itchy as hell though.
It makes alternative bedding and feed.
Pro trick : watch series on Flixzone. Me and my gf have been using them for watching a lot of movies these days.
@Calvin Sullivan yup, have been watching on flixzone for years myself :)
I used to powdercoat the interior parts for Claas combines years ago. Fascinating stuff seeing their history.
Wow. Thank you for sharing. Did you work at the German or US plant?
Great video and history, not everyday that a CAT combine comes by, thanks for this special delivery
The 400 series were and are great machines.
You are clever, informative and engaging, so many people today operating these machines who have no idea of the history the brand the image , maybe they are not interested but i bet most are especially as they get older. Your footage and commentary is exemplary. Well done & thankyou.
Thank you for your comments. It is fun sharing the machines history.
Thank you for putting this video together with Claas combine history in the North American market. However, I believe they made some combines for the North American market sold as Massey Ferguson 8450 and 8460, maybe more even models, in the late 1980's and early 1990's. Those machines look a lot like contemporary Claas Dominator 96 and 106 models.
Thats very interesting
We have a Massey-Ferguson 8460 in Alberta, Canada. It is the rebranded dominator Claas combine. It still says Claas all over on the inside, just painted red on the outside and where the paint is wearing off, it is the claas green. It is a pretty good combine and has a Mercedes engine, the only trouble is it is very hard to get parts where I live. It is starting to show its age though, it is getting up in the hours and has trouble in thicker crops. But other than that it is a great machine.
Remember this movie "Son in law"? There is one of Dominator XX8 series by Massey Ferguson 8460. ;)
www.imcdb.org/vehicle_662514-Massey-Ferguson-8460.html
But it isn't seeling Claas combines by MF dealers, only supplementing offer by modern lineup of combines. Don't forget in this time, Massey start connecting with WFE and creating AGCO.
My son and I each owned a Ford 642 combine. They were Ford blue on the outside and Claas green on the inside. Nice to see one in the field again.
That is cool. Ford combines are far and few between today. I was excited to get to film one.
Good info! This clarifies a lot which I was always wondering regarding these Claas based machines.
👍
Nice to see these classic machines in action
Thank you for watching.
Thank you BTP. Love the history of the machine and inforation.
Thank you. I like sharing history.
I worked for a custom harvester back in 2002. He ran 4 of the 470 cats. Wow what junk, they just wouldn't quit throwing grain on the ground. He said it reminded him of the silver seeder gleener. Although they are a heavy built machine unlike the red 2388 tin cans of the time.
Awesome video on Claas combines. I didn’t know that Claas has been in U.S. for such a longtime. I do like the black and yellow paint scheme
20 years on the Lexion and 52 years altogether.
AWESOMENESS AS ALWAYS- THANKS FOR ALL THAT YOU ARE DOING FOR US VIEWERS!!!🚜🚜🚜🚜🚜🚜🚜🚜🚜🚜🚜🚜🚜🚜
Happy to film these machines to share their history. Thank you for watching.
Thanks for posting this beautiful equipment.
Thank you for watching. It’s fun to find these classics.
Good windrows for the baler to follow.great video.
👍. Thank you for watching.
I always wondered about the Cat combine. Very interesting
They have a best story.
Really good information. Thanks for sharing and as always a really nice video.
Thank you for watching.
Good history lesson. One other thing worth mentioning is that shortly after AGCO purchased/licensed the Challenger brand from AGCO around 2002, they added combines to the Challenger brand. Although these were actually Hesston built Massey/Gleaner combines, they were painted Cat yellow and were powered with Caterpillar engines. Both Challengers and Lexions even displayed "CAT" logo decals on their sides during the 2000s. Different machines in origin and design, but in some ways seemingly identical to the outsider.
I hope to get a chance to film a Challenger combine some day. I have only filmed Gleaner and Massey so far.
@@bigtractorpower I take photos of farm equipment and have only found one Challenger combine so far, it was near Troy, MO last year. I didn't get the best photos of it so I might try to chase it down next year. That and I want to get some shots of a Versatile combine, but that one is going to be a trick to find!
Big tractor power, I saw a Lexion combine back in 2015 at the Sunbelt Ag Expo in Moultrie, GA. It had I think a Mercedes Benz Diesel engine. It was about 13L in displacement and was a 6 cylinder engine.
Yes some newer Lexions use a Mercedes like the big 780 while others like the 760 still use the CAT.
Great vid 👍 great history on Claas combines in North America. In Australia they were branded black n yellow n sold through CAT dealerships like William Ag that had been since 50’s I believe selling n servicing CAT equipment like our CAT D4. When CAT stop continuing combines 585R well then rest combines became the green n white in 500, 600 today 700 series. The small combines were coming over as green n white when CAT was selling black/yellow yeah confusing hey! CAT end up buying out Perkins engines too later on. There are two dealerships in Australia now William Ag n Westrac that sell CAT and Claas have more Harvest Centres now. Pa look at buying CAT combine with walkers but stuck with MF I believe that these combines were not simple n with a lot moving parts.
I think the yellow is going to be phased on in North America soon. There are rumors saying Claas color combines are on the way.
Thanks for posting this film BTP. Really interesting history on the CAT and Claas brands! I’ve been a fan of Claas combines and machinery for over 40 years. I’ve spent many a hour on a 228 dominator when I was a kid. Oh, and I didn’t know Claas sold under the Ford brand in the States. Great stuff, keep up the great work. I’m fairly sure you’re going to hit 100K subscribers by Christmas 🎄👍
The 228 is a cool combine. Did it have tracks? It’s inching closer to 100K. Only 500 to go so probably this week will be the 100,000 mark.
bigtractorpower no it ran on tyres! Great machine though.
Growing closer and closer toward 100k subscribers. keep up the good work.
It’s inching that way. Just about 500 to go.
Like the competing brands shown here. Nice farmland,
Thank you. I try to cover every brand.
Always been curious about this history! thanks for the explanation!
Happy to help. Thank you for watching.
First time seeing a Caterpillar harvester
Claas also sold pull type combines in Canada through CCIL
Longer video from 700 series Cat combines would be nice to see
I am working on. 700 series video. Stay tuned.
Who New! Never seen one around here in Central Illinois. Looks like the combine market is very competitive.
I would say Lexion combines are the 3rd best seller in the United States after John Deere and Case IH.

Really interesting BTP, great video.
Thank you for watching.
Superb drone video, superb information given as we enjoy the view. TY BTP
Thank you for watching.
Over all pretty good but some mis info.. Agco purchased Cat farm equipment in 2002 not 2001. And Yes, MF 8450 and 8460 machines are the same as Claas Dominator 108. I was told the MF 8680 and Gleaner C62 ( the same machine) built from around 98 to 2002 was a Claas but I can't say for sure.
Here in the UK Class combines are green and white, as you mention in your video. They are very popular, I'd say 3 in every 5 combines are Class Lexion, just through observations.
Claas.
@@xuser48 yes I know, my phone auto corrected the spelling
I would guess Claas is the number 3 seller in the United States after John Deere and Case IH.
Since its introduction, and still today, Lexion is still one step ahead of all the competition
👍
I really enjoyed this video and great information
Thank you for watching.
For a while claas sold their combines branded as claas but remained Ford blue. Then they sold them as green painted machines, then claas had a deal with massey Ferguson. For example the claas dominator 108 was sold as a massey Ferguson 8460. Locally my dealer got as award in the late 70s for being the biggest claas dealer in North America. Totalling something like $4million in sales in 79
Thanks for the little history lesson. Greetings from Germany where Claas is green and white :D
Thank you for watching. Always an honor to have viewers from other parts of the world. Claas is a great brand.
Nice video Jason! Good info there. Not many clause machines in the area. Those 4xx are getting hard to find
Thank you Jake. The first generation CAT Lexions are harder and harder to find.
Nice video Jason 👏👏👍👍
Thank you for watching.
Where in Wisconsin were you you could have visited me. Thanks for the video.
My friend John who lives near Madison filmed this for BTP. He has filmed a bunch in Wisconsin this year for me.
Nice drone footage BTP.
Glad you enjoyed it.
My neighbor had a blue an white claas with its reddish orange name on it back then it was a name I'd not ever heard of an he ran it for a number of years he now has a nice new Holland combine an seems pretty happy with it .
Wow that blue Claas is a rare one. After Ford dropped combines in 1979 Claas continued to import combines in blue and white that had a decal that said Sold and Serviced by your Ford dealer. In 1986 when Ford acquired New Holland the NH TR was the new combine for Ford dealers. Claas then sold their combines in green and white in the United States until 1998.
The blue claas he had the Cobs would lay on top of the knife shoot not sure as to why they did other than maybe they came from top down onto the knife shoot.
Keep Up The Good Work
Thank you for watching.
Amazing cobines
They are top machines.
bigtractorpower yes
In the past, claas was associated with the caterpillar. in europe, the challengers were painted in claas.
I would like to film a Claas 95E or 55. Very cool tractors.
Otimo video amigo fica com Deus. 👍👏👏
thank's
Thank you for watching.
They are really movin, will there be video on the class xerion on the demco cart?
Yes there will be a video on the Xerion and Demco.
Do you ever run in to any pull type combines any more sure would like to see some i run a lot of them in my younger days.thanks for the good videos. Sam
Case IH and John Deere were the last offer pull type combines in the early 1990’s. The pull type combine is a rare sight to see today.
What do they use round baked bean stalks for
pre Y2K. I stopped at the re-badged Caterpillar plant at Dekalb IL. I loaded spanking new Dark Green asphalt laying machine and took it to Minnesota north of Grand Rapids where it was painted Cat Yellow. I hauled yellow asphalt machines to the North Side of MPLS/STPL to have decals applied. Trivia. While at Dekalb they were Re-badging Cat Challengers to Green Claas markings. They mumbled something about Cat not havig the business license to sell ag equipment in Europe. floor worker might have just told me a story that sounded good at the time
the challenger tractors in europe are branded fendt, not claas
@@toiletsauce_ 20 plus years ago. I am sure there has been more corporate name changes
@@BornRandy62 oh sorry, i completely ignored the very beginning of your comment, lol. but i have seen both of the old challengers branded cat and claas in western europe, but i can't tell you why
Before AGCO took over Challenger, CAT supplied Claas with the 45,55, 65E, 75E, 85E and 95E in green and white for European sales. Claas offered yellow combines through CAT and CAT offered green and white tractors through Claas.
Good video
Thank you for watching.
Say BTP; I do think Claas offered the Dominators through Ford Dealers in the Blue+White colors right up to the Massey deal. Right behind the cab of some Blue 76 and 96 dominators it oddly says "MARKETED THROUGH FORD DEALERS"
If i did manage to get your attention; I love your videos on older iron. In your JD 6600 combine vid I noticed you left out Massey. In my area on the Delmarva Peninsula we had a prolific Massey dealer that sold a mess of them in the 70's and 80's. Within 20 miles of each other there are still 510s, 550s, 750s, and a pair of Massey Claas 8450s. Was hoping to get vid of the pair of 750's working near me but I had hay to bale at the time :/
I would really like to film a post Ford blue and white Claas that has the sold and serviced by Ford. I have sales literature on them but I have not run across a real one yet.
I have not filmed a classic Massey yet. Hopefully I get a chance so I can include it in future videos.
Lexions are very popular here in Europe.
Claas makes a great combine.
interesting, i thought the Cat combines were identical to the original Claas Lexion series. but the original 400 series was only avable with Perkins and Mercedes motors.
The European 400s had Perkins?
@@bigtractorpower Yes, the 480 was only avable with a Mercedes OM-441LA, on the smaler ones you could choose between Mercedes and Perkins but the most took Mercedes, i seems that Cat motores were also avable here, but not alle the time.
I am a big Gleaner fan, But I see these Lexion combines at the farm And science review just pretty much destroy the other brands. There are lots of them in use around my area And the farmers seem to love them.
Claas and Gleaner both build top end machines.
@@bigtractorpower I truly think the only reason John Deere sells combines is because there are dealers on every block with readily supply of parts And service. I will probably get a lot of negative feedback from this, But Gleaner And Lexion are way far better machines. Your videos are great, very detailed And informative. Thanks for taking the time to make them.
Are you going to film the cotten harvest this year?
No cotton in 2018. I will try in 2019.
Think that Case magnum could do fine pulling that baler without duals unless he's worried about compaction
It’s probably just not worth the time to remove the duals so they just keep them on.
What is the most sold combine brand in the U.S and do particular brands be getter suited for different crops
John Deere is the top seller, Case IH is number 2. I would guess Claas Lexion is in 3rd place. AGCO Gleaner and New Holland I would guess are a close 4th/5th and Massey Ferguson 6th. Challenger would be 7th and there are a few Versatiles in 8th.
So the Claas combines are in Cat colors, but the Jaguar forage choppers and possibly other implements are in standard Claas colors. Does Claas also sell combines in their own colors in the US?
You are correct. Farmers have been used to buying the Lexion in yellow for 20 years. The rest of Claas machines are sold in green and white in North America. It is just a marketing decision. At this time in North America the combine is only sold in yellow.
fun to use in fs17 as well
👍👍👍👍
Years ago caterpillar built a combine and I think it was in California that's where most of them were used and they were even back when they were pulled by horses I believe they were in the farm equipment before they were in the construction business
Caterpillar did build a large horse drawn combine. They sold that early combine division to John Dees in the 1930’s.
We may be demoing a 750 if it will ever dry back out.
Cool. Hopes it’s a TT Model after all this rain. Maybe you can try an Ideal next year? 😄
I don’t know if you have done Massey Ferguson if not that would be pretty cool
massey fergusen is caterpillar same tracters
Dont forget Claas sold their combines through Massey painted red for a while.
If you notice the Ford 642 in this video has the Claas/Massey head. Unfortunately I have not been able to film one of the Claas built Massey Ferguson 8450 and 8460 models. Hopefully in the future I will be able to track one down to tell its story.
@@bigtractorpower ...I saw a red Masssey/Claas at the Western Canada Farm Progress Show in Regina back in the day. A quick look at the sieves and you could still see some green paint. Claas is still struggling to catch on in Western Canada. Deere and Caseih have dealers everywhere. Claas dealers are few and far between.
I think that blue Ford was either a Class Dominator or Senator.
My neighbour once had a Standard Matador Claas. Great combine but had trouble sucking the fuel up to its engine and it had a single double H I-I-I joystick to control the table, reel height and forward speed variator. This was under the steering wheel and was very uncomfortable to use, resulting in a hunch-back posture. No cabs back then,
Good to see white still working the fields.
@bilodef66 My favorite White was the 1977 4-270 articulated. My dad at the time thought they looked way too good to put out in the"dirt".HAHA!!.(I kinda agree)
Gran bel macchinario
Thank you for watching.
There bin extensions only look half open
That tractor with the red grain cart makes me think that the company who made that tractor tried to copy the cab design from the John Deere 4440 4850 etc.
these tracters were made before the 40 and 50 series john deere
White introduced that cab in 1974 on the silver tractors and offered a similar style cab on the Oliver 55 series starting in 1969. The Deere Soundgard did not come out until 1973.
Any Gleaners in your future?
Yes watch for an R75 in corn.
What do they use the soybean bales for
Feed and bedding for cows.
love the White!
Great brand of farm equipment.
Through which dealer network is the Claas Lexion sold these days, now that Cat isn't interested? Are Cat dealers still selling them? What about the AGCO Challenger tractors? Over in Europe they have just dumped the Challenger name on the tracked tractors [never did sell the French built wheeled tractors as Challenger here] and are now painting them a darker green [than Claas] with the Fendt brand. Not sure if they will be known as Fendt Challenger tractors or just Fendt tracked tractors. Probably the latter.
they are still sold through cat
Claas Lexion combines are still sold through Caterpillar dealers along side AGCO built Challengers. Some Case IH Dealers are Claas dealers and sell Lexion. Challenger is still a brand I. The United States. AGCO starting in 2018 retired Challenger from Europe and offers the tracked machines now through Fendt.
Agco is Fendt, challenger, claas. And more i think
Claas is not at agco. Agco has gleaner, massey-ferguson, fendt, challenger and valtra.
Claas is a family owned company from Harsewinkel, Germany.
Fendt and Challenger are part of AGCO. Claas is its own company.
What is the soybean straw used for?
KHD Kevin Around my place we use it as bedding for heifers, after running it through the straw chopper, it works fine.
It is used for bedding and feed.
I think a custom harvester bought a new lexion combines. Actually a pair of them
Very cool.
The European color scheme for Class combines is coming to North America in the near future.
I have been hearing that. I filmed a new 750TT in wheat that was yellow but it had a green stripe on the side.
Impagable en Argentina.780.000 dólares!!!
Do they sell claas tractors in north america????
Yes they do,but very few dealers in general when compared to Deere.
Only the Xerion at the moment
Zero01k ok thanks.
Zero01k they are starting to sell the Axion series tractors as well seen on last month at the farm progress show in Grand Island, NE.
Ive seen a forage harvester now and again in Nebraska, but no tractors. June have to look in different areas.

Do you have any informations about another combines from Europe? . Some company's from Europe send combines to States, for example Polish Bizon's combines, in 1970's FMZ (Harvest Machines Fabric placed in Plock-Center Poland ) who produce very good and simple construction combines make contract with US Dealer-Company ,,Long" to deliver Bizon's (Z055 ,,america,, 105 hp model) for american farmer's finally in 1977 they send 250-270 combines to States, here they painted in Blue color, combines got John Deere cab's and whea + corn headers and i think all be sold they got 105 hp Andoria SW-400 engine, this engine was standard for all Bizon's. Long change them name to Long 5000 Grain combine. Do you have any informations about them?, you can find pictures of this combines in Google.
It would be great see this combine in video, even if they are wreck`s, this is one of the best`s combine in europe ever build, since in 1969 and many of them still working on the fields in Poland and in other country`s in eastern and north europe.

I do not know very much about other European combined. I hope to get to visit and film in Europe some day.
O sea que realmente CAT tiene 0 historia como productor de cosechadoras y lo único que hace es vender las CLASS repintadas con otro logo , pues vaya...
It's a yellow class
That is correct.

Oh no more European stuff. I thought you learned your lesson on that. Made In America. Show real machines. You ain’t going to grow your channel with this forgien stuff.
Lexxion combines are built in Omaha, Nebraska. You must be a Trump fan
I try to film all brands offered in North America. I do my best to give a good mix. I am not changing that formula. You will see each brand featured here on BTP when I catch up with one to film. I do not favor one over another and will not just skip cool looking machines based on where there built. I feel 99% of the BTP viewers find learning about these different machines interesting.
