  • Caterpillar well known for construction equipment like bull dozers teamed up with German combine manufacture Claas in 1997 to introduce the Caterpillar Lexion 400 Series of combines in North America. Class has offered combines in North America since 1966. Class first introduced it's combines to customers in the United States and Canda by building combines for Ford Motors. In this video viewers will see a Caterpillar Lexion 460 and 480 combine harvesting soybeans in Wisconsin as well seeing other Claas built combines like the Ford 642, Caterpillar 570R and Claas 780TT.

    Thank you for putting this video together with Claas combine history in the North American market. However, I believe they made some combines for the North American market sold as Massey Ferguson 8450 and 8460, maybe more even models, in the late 1980's and early 1990's. Those machines look a lot like contemporary Claas Dominator 96 and 106 models.

      We have a Massey-Ferguson 8460 in Alberta, Canada. It is the rebranded dominator Claas combine. It still says Claas all over on the inside, just painted red on the outside and where the paint is wearing off, it is the claas green. It is a pretty good combine and has a Mercedes engine, the only trouble is it is very hard to get parts where I live. It is starting to show its age though, it is getting up in the hours and has trouble in thicker crops. But other than that it is a great machine.

    Good history lesson. One other thing worth mentioning is that shortly after AGCO purchased/licensed the Challenger brand from AGCO around 2002, they added combines to the Challenger brand. Although these were actually Hesston built Massey/Gleaner combines, they were painted Cat yellow and were powered with Caterpillar engines. Both Challengers and Lexions even displayed "CAT" logo decals on their sides during the 2000s. Different machines in origin and design, but in some ways seemingly identical to the outsider.

    Great vid 👍 great history on Claas combines in North America. In Australia they were branded black n yellow n sold through CAT dealerships like William Ag that had been since 50’s I believe selling n servicing CAT equipment like our CAT D4. When CAT stop continuing combines 585R well then rest combines became the green n white in 500, 600 today 700 series. The small combines were coming over as green n white when CAT was selling black/yellow yeah confusing hey! CAT end up buying out Perkins engines too later on. There are two dealerships in Australia now William Ag n Westrac that sell CAT and Claas have more Harvest Centres now. Pa look at buying CAT combine with walkers but stuck with MF I believe that these combines were not simple n with a lot moving parts.

      @@bigtractorpower ...I saw a red Masssey/Claas at the Western Canada Farm Progress Show in Regina back in the day. A quick look at the sieves and you could still see some green paint. Claas is still struggling to catch on in Western Canada. Deere and Caseih have dealers everywhere. Claas dealers are few and far between.

      I think that blue Ford was either a Class Dominator or Senator.
      My neighbour once had a Standard Matador Claas. Great combine but had trouble sucking the fuel up to its engine and it had a single double H I-I-I joystick to control the table, reel height and forward speed variator. This was under the steering wheel and was very uncomfortable to use, resulting in a hunch-back posture. No cabs back then,

    That tractor with the red grain cart makes me think that the company who made that tractor tried to copy the cab design from the John Deere 4440 4850 etc.

      White introduced that cab in 1974 on the silver tractors and offered a similar style cab on the Oliver 55 series starting in 1969. The Deere Soundgard did not come out until 1973.

    Through which dealer network is the Claas Lexion sold these days, now that Cat isn't interested? Are Cat dealers still selling them? What about the AGCO Challenger tractors? Over in Europe they have just dumped the Challenger name on the tracked tractors [never did sell the French built wheeled tractors as Challenger here] and are now painting them a darker green [than Claas] with the Fendt brand. Not sure if they will be known as Fendt Challenger tractors or just Fendt tracked tractors. Probably the latter.

    • @joescheller6680

    • @bigtractorpower
      @bigtractorpower  Před 5 lety

      Claas Lexion combines are still sold through Caterpillar dealers along side AGCO built Challengers. Some Case IH Dealers are Claas dealers and sell Lexion. Challenger is still a brand I. The United States. AGCO starting in 2018 retired Challenger from Europe and offers the tracked machines now through Fendt.

    Do you have any informations about another combines from Europe? . Some company's from Europe send combines to States, for example Polish Bizon's combines, in 1970's FMZ (Harvest Machines Fabric placed in Plock-Center Poland ) who produce very good and simple construction combines make contract with US Dealer-Company ,,Long" to deliver Bizon's (Z055 ,,america,, 105 hp model) for american farmer's finally in 1977 they send 250-270 combines to States, here they painted in Blue color, combines got John Deere cab's and whea + corn headers and i think all be sold they got 105 hp Andoria SW-400 engine, this engine was standard for all Bizon's. Long change them name to Long 5000 Grain combine. Do you have any informations about them?, you can find pictures of this combines in Google.
    It would be great see this combine in video, even if they are wreck`s, this is one of the best`s combine in europe ever build, since in 1969 and many of them still working on the fields in Poland and in other country`s in eastern and north europe.

      I try to film all brands offered in North America. I do my best to give a good mix. I am not changing that formula. You will see each brand featured here on BTP when I catch up with one to film. I do not favor one over another and will not just skip cool looking machines based on where there built. I feel 99% of the BTP viewers find learning about these different machines interesting.
