Harley 96 Isn't As Bad As You Think
Vložit
- čas přidán 15. 08. 2024
- The Harley 96 got a bad reputation, it's hot, it's underpowered and the list goes on and on. Honestly a lot of this criticism is completely unfounded, no one was used to the new FI system and why it ran so hot. Even after those issues were corrected the bad reputation has followed the Harley 96. Truth is there is a lot less to do on a Harley 96 versus going with the good old Twin Cam 88.

It's great to be back! We should be back on track going forward from here!
Glad to have you back. I hope shit got straightened out for you👊
Love you, brother. Thank you for all the awesome content you put out for us. Keep that chin high.
I've had my 2009 96 inch twin cam since it was new rode it stock for years with just a stage 1 And Rinehart slip ons. It ran ok but still lean so I finally put it on my lift replaced my compensator with a screamin eagle because it came with the stator rotor that I had to change all for 400.00 then I put in a set of mid range SE 255 cams lifters and pushrods and new cam tensioners put on Vance and Hines pro pipe 2 to 1 had it Dyno tuned with a TTS tuner I got 94hp and 103 flbs of torque it comes on real good all the way from the bottom to 5800 I've ran with 103s running hard and it keeps right up with a friend's 103 with comparable cams ( he has 255s also Dyno tuned as well) a stock 103 doesn't have anything on my 96 that's for certain. I'm not saying it's a race engine by any means but everything I did to mine really woke it up. It runs now like they should run right off the show room floor.
Awesome.... From your brother Down Under 🇦🇺, I was concerned about you.
Life on 2wheels can be short & only takes a second of a distracted car driver.

Good to have you back brother. As always enjoyed the video. Can't wait until next week. I have a 2008 superglide and love it.
Love my 2008 96, will be looking into a turner for next season since riding is almost over here in the upper Midwest. And have a few minor issues with oil seeps , which also will be done this winter . Love your posts , glad to see you back
Is the 06 road king 88cu in fuel injected ??
It’s good to see you back. Love your videos they’re very informative I have a 04 softail deuce with a carbureted twin cam 88. The cam chest is fully updated with all screaming eagle parts. but believe it or not the biggest improvement in performance that I noticed was when I installed screaming eagle plugs and wires Super crisp throttle response. And all thanks to your informative videos, thanks man keep up the good work
I did the same plugs/ wires on my 2000 fxst. If you haven't upgraded the coil yet, I recommend an ACCEL super coil. I was surprised at the difference.
Read my comment
What a great video man! I’ve got an 07 Dyna Lowrider with the 96 in it, I absolutely love it. There’s a lot of pros versus the 88, I used to have an 05 fatty and I went through ALL of the issues you could cross paths with on that bike. This one, I threw on pipes, an intake and an FP3 and I’ve had smiles for miles with boat loads of power. It’s never left me stranded (knock on wood) and it’s definitely my favorite bike I’ve ever owned. I do want to throw the Dark Horse in it eventually, aside from that, I’m very pleased with what Harley did with this motor and trans combo.
I’ve owned Evos and 88 twin cams. My 2008 96 “ is my favorite bike to date. Stock Evos are great. Stock 08 and up 96’s are a fantastic and very dependable.
I love the 2007 and newer bikes, flash tuner is more expensive but super easy to make changes and one of the best things you can do for your bike is get a flash tune to put some fuel in it. They run night and day better getting some fuel and not mention way cooler!
I have a 2010 '96 Ultra. Sold new with a major discount as the 103 was already out. I'm the second owner. Just 22,000 miles and most of them done in its early years touring around Europe. It's a joy to ride. That 2009-on frame... So much better than earlier tourers I've owned. Presently has weeping rocker gaskets as they break-down due to excessive heat. That's my main issue with it. Totally stock. Will need to look at an economic way of bringing down the temperature.
I got a rare 2005 103 (FLHTCSE2). Not alot of content on the "in between" models... I do enjoy your content and appreciate your knowledge! 💯👍🏾💪🏾🤙🏾
Made my day to see this video glad your doing well just picked up a second bike 2011 Road King with a 96 cant wait to do a stage 1 with bassani true duals and some bars.
Welcome back! Local dealer tried to sell me a twin cam when they first came out. Before I purchased the bike, the dealership put the bike on a dyno. The cam chest blew up! I passed on the twin cam. I kept my evo for 30 years until the M8 came out.
Glad to see u back man..hope all is well
Awesome to have you back! You are hands down my number one go to when educating new potential HD owners looking at bikes
2 years ago i was looking for my first harley, i had a vtx1800r and i didn't really know what year bikes had issues and which didn't so i started watching your videos and decided on a streetglide with ethier a 96ci or 103ci after looking for several months i finally found a bike in great shape that i could afford (didn't want any type of payment) an old man had bought it brand new and it was completely stock, even stock mufflers. The oldan was selling everything and moving into an apartment in the city it's an 08 with 30,000 garage kept, runs great i stuck a full cobra exhaust system, cobra tuner, 21in rim, air shock lower kit, alot of chrome, L.E.Ds. so i have about than 10k in it after $2500 in upgrades and im happy that i don't have a payment.
Do you miss the VTX? A friend had one, great bike.
@@dowhatyouwill oh the vtx was a great bike, at times i get to thinking that i should've just customized the vtx and i get to missing it a little and the ONLY reason i sold it was bc at the time we where taking long rides and with these useless peanut helmets a windshield is mandatory but i don't like the looks of a windshield so i really wanted something with a fairing and a radio, i was the only one in the group without a harley, the vtx didn't sound as good but it out run every harley i ever lined up with.
I was hoping for some information on performance or something besides personal money shit and an old man. Wow, your a real Harley guy
Great to have ya back. The content as usual is some of my favorite. Need to squeeze The SHELF in below the Andrew's banner...lol
Great Video. I have a 08 Road King with a 96. I live in Los Angeles and really brought the temps down with the FP3 tuner and brought the temp down a little bit further by routing my breather to a catch can. The FP3 allows me to monitor intake temps and with the rerouted breather I've lowered my intake 30 -50 degrees F. I have a JAGG fan assisted oil cooler on order. No plans on a cam at this point as I'm happy with the 96 as it is. 6th gear is a must here as freeway traffic speeds are frequently 85-90.
I have the 08 king to. I put in an S&S true dual head pipe that ditched the y pipe setup and it runs much better. I haven't checked temps but the rider feels it much less.
Tribodyn oil
Thanks for sharing!
The Dark Horse compenstor eliminator sounds interesting...thanks for that info.
My Mannn. The voice of reason is back. Good luck with the new place. Thx for making me look great by owning an 07 SG with a woods 222 cam. Be well buddy
Great to have you back brother. in the middle of getting no to my 2007 Electra Glide Classic got with Fuel Moto and ordered there 107 build kit with the new jugs and 10.25:1 compression along with the woods 555 cam
S&S tuned duel header and 4.9gps injectors along with AIM Variable pressure clutch. The information that you have provided us on the 96 engine helped me decide what to do with this old girl with 75,000 miles on her. Thanks for the help and keep it coming.
I have a 2010 Superglide C. Its a 96" and i love it.
Same here! Really like mine a lot!!
I really like the 99-02 twin cams because they have the timkin bottom end. I think this is a huge advantage that isn't stressed enough. After replacing the cam chest and spring tensioners with gears, and use a high flow oil pump, I've basically got an engine that will last as long as a Sportster engine
I have an 07 Night Train 96cl, 6 speed,,200 rear tire. It’s such a great bike, runs strong, V&H fp3 made a big difference
I just bought a 2007 heritage softail. So it does have the 96. It has 6000 miles on it. It is a one owner bike. I do know the original owner. So I know the bike is never been ridden hard. I do not plan on riding it hard. He cost me $4000. The bike is so original it still has the original front tire on it.
I've been abusing the literal piss out if my Fatboy with a 96 Twin Cam.
I absolutely love it, the most reliable bike I've had and with a full stage 1 I haven't had the low power issue's, once I do a cam then I'll be good.
That said I'm at like 46k miles and after 14k miles of pure torture the compensator is finally giving up the ghost
Great vlog! Love my 07 FLTR with the stock original drivetrain at 195K. Great running touring bike! Cam chain tensioners lasted until 160K. Mechanic also replaced the lifters. Injector(s) started sticking at ~188K. Two H-D mechanics suggested trying Seafoam (liquid form). I just bought a set of injectors; replacing soon before the next US HOG Touring Ralley...
Just replaced Nellie's fuel injectors (I posted 3 CZcams shorts). 18 miles so far on them. On the way to 200K 🇺🇸
Missed you buddy glad you're back your garage looks awesome thanks for all your videos
Awesome video Gixxerfoo! Glad to have you back! Hope the new place works out great for you. I still love the Evo, but I would definitely pay more for a 96 over an 88 anyday. My friend has a 2002 Softail Standard and I think he has about 30k on it. I'm trying to convince him to check the tensioners. Its a ticking time bomb.
Great to see you again! I hope all is well!
The worst part of the 96 in my case was the compensator. Edit note, Getting a 2009 FLH will get you the new designed frame for a better ride.
Like the new shop. All you need is some new lighting and an over loading shelf above your head 😁. Awesome informative video as always my friend!
Gotta have the shelf with a plywood tensiometer.
That's the plan!
Glad you're back. I was getting a little worried if you were ok.
2006 dyna models had the updated cam chest an the 6 speed which carries over on the 96 an 103s
I own a 96inch, 2012 Dyna Superglide. Did slip-on exhaust, with 1.75 baffles. Had to have it remapped to solve surging problems after slip-ons. Replaced 32 tooth primary gear with a 31 tooth. Gave me an extra 140rpm at 70mph. Nothing else has been done. 114K miles on it. Never a wrench to the motor. I'm an easy rider, I stay in the sweet-spot. Ride 65 or 70mph, closer to 65. Love the bike, love the 96. Never been a power freak. With the primary gear change, I have plenty of power. Love your videos.
Great to see you back
I've become to realize that the 96 is probably one of the best engines harley makes. I've got a 2010 rocker with a stage 1, chipped and tuned. Removed the rev limiter and can red line in 6th gear. I can't believe how this runs, and all my fellow riders with bigger bore bikes, staged or not, can not keep up. Crazy how quick this 96 has become with such a simple mod. I run it, but i don't abuse it. 30,000 km and still runnin strong. Thinking about cams...but asking why,, is my only problem with this bike.
That's awesome! Not all engines are created equal and they vary with the exact same specs, sound like you've got a really really good motor!
Damn!.. need the famous shelf up over the A/C 😆
Lol that damn shelf was probably pretty dangerous honestly.
Congratulations on the new place! Don't worry too much about the lighting, it has no effect on the great insight and content you deliver with every video. Keep up the great work.
Glad to see you back! Enjoyed the content even though I don' have a 96 cu.in. just an old evo and 2 103's! Oh, don't forget to put up the calendar!
Glad you're back as well! I've got 2 07's and an 08. Love em!
Well done lad, glad to see you back
I bought an `07 Ultra, 96", in Oct of '06. Changed the oil at 100 mi. then had the factory change it at 500. Unfortunately they changed the filter but not the oil and put 3 qt's. in it. 10 miles down the road it puked. At 1000 mi. it started spark knocking so bad I couldn't get over 70. With 2 up couldn't get over 50. A 90 mile one way trip to the dealership, then only they could work on it, at least 6 times, to tune and retune, came with the same answer " it'll clear up when it's completely broken in. 1000 mi. later same thing. I contacted Milwaukee and told them to come get it under the country's Lemon Law. They responded by replacing the 96" with a 103" and the dealership location to my town. I've had issues with the bike but not the 103". It's been strong and reliable since then. Shout out to Las Vegas HD.
Glad to have you back. I really enjoy hearing what you have to talk about as I have a Twin 88 2003 Lowrider. Thank you for sharing your knowledge.
I have a 2009 Street Bob with the following additions, A new style Screaming Eagle Compensator, An Andrews 57h Cam with a 4 degree advance and a 30 tooth trans pully with a 68 tooth rear wheel pully. My next additions will be a Fox front fork cartridge kit and Fox rear shocks with a Glide Pro motor mount system. I am making this bike my own. I am also thinking on adapting a new style Road Glide Fairing to my bike. And last if needed a 104 Big bore kit with KB pistons and bore my cylinders. If I get 110 Ft. Lb. of torque and 100 Hp. I will be satisfied. Good videos though , I appreciate you making them.
Thanks for making us a priority after your move
It's great to be back! Just had to take a little time and get some things settled.
@@GixxerFoo what do you think about compensator eliminators?
Had a 07 Super Glide with the 96! Never had any issues with the bike or engine
How many miles did you put on the bike? Probably not a ton I'm willing to guess 😂
Damn, I didn't know the 96 was bad... ouch, haha
Nothing wrong with a 96. First one new, second one a 2008 have had zero issues.
Glad to c u again. Wonderful videos.
I have the flhtcu 2008 anniversary 96.
🛑🛑 Great New Digs😀👍.
Its good to see you’re back in the saddle again. 💯
I put an original Fuel pak on my 2008 super glide and got surprisingly good results. It’s got enough get up and go but cams are about to be put in it and a newer, more user friendly tuner. I love my 96.
I have a 2008 super glide. Had screaming eagle 585 cams installed. Wow. Woke her up big time☺
We had 2 '09 96ci touring bikes. The only problem we had with them is that the compensator went out on both which we replaced with the screaming eagle version. Other than that they were great and very dependable. Loved the bikes. Really enjoy your videos, keep up the good work!
Have you made any engine upgrades on they both stock?
How many did you have when the compensators failed? What kinda riding did you guys do? I have 2010 road king 96" with cam and tuner. Thanks Chris
@@lio1999This guy didn't answer you? He's not a Harley man! 🥴
@@lio1999 Sreaming eagle heavy breathers and super trapped SE mufflers. After replacing the compensator I had S&S 585 cams and head work down on mine.
And power commander tuner
I own a 2009 road king with the 96. Slip on exhaust heavy breather aircleaner and wide band fuel system. Not sure if it's camed as I bought it slightly used 11 years ago. It pulls as good if not better than a stock 103. I don't see a reason I'd ever trade it off. I'm 35 plan on riding it till the end of my days.
Good Tooooo See Ur Back missed Ur Vids. !
Most Very Interesting!!
And To the Point !!!
I own 2007 night train it’s great bike as far as I know it mostly stock except screaming eagle heavy breather Vance Hines two into one and I have a 2019 tri glide too
I had a 96 on my old 2010 Wide Glide...Plenty of power
07 to 09 were the worst years as far as flywheels & compensator s go but judging by comments you are getting they are well liked . Maybe my customers are riding them too hard ! Anyway your new digs look good !
I had a 96 with 88,000 miles on it. hit something on the road and holed the case. sprung for a new 110 SE long block program and could not me happier. Set of SE 255 cams and its prefect for me. On a side not ,I got it new and it has ABS. the front brake line for the rear brake wore out from vibration on the frame. HD don't make it any more. I had to go aftermarket and it took a while to find it.
You see bikes and beards install the Trask turbo on his 131 road king?????
Holy cow is that a nice machine
Trask turbos make those motors wild! You bolt one onto a Evo Sportster and it'll lay down 120+ horsepower all day long.
@@GixxerFoo .....that be cool but Trask turbo on a sporty???... lol
@@GixxerFoo ....seen kaplan america put one on his cvo dyna. It was a beautiful machine

Thanks for the vid! I was considering selling it to get an '87 FXR...but I'm quite happy with my '07 FXDB at the moment
At 41k miles i put a set of Andrews 57h cams, feuling cam plate, oil pump, lifters. And s&s quickies. My tensioner pads looked brand new. Very little wear. Also running pcv with auto tune
Welcome back, wish if you can do a complete video for 96 to 124 ci, including all parts should be upgraded for 124 big bore starting from the head work, clutch, compensator, crankshaft, gearbox if required. etc..
I love my 08 electra 96", I've got 60k miles on it. Thud winter I'm going do a cam upgrade and full exhaust
I ain't bought a 2009 FLH with the 96 motor in 2009 I had it for 10 years other than a few small electronic things and the compensator going bad two times. and the cam wearing out at 40,000 oh yeah and the lifters and the hardness that wore off of most of the internal components. it was a good bike thank goodness for the extended warranty. that's one time they didn't catch me with my pants down LOL
oh yeah the fuel injection the little gear that opened up the throttle plate when you first started it up it sounded like Woody woodpecker a couple of the teeth came off never did find the teeth. when I took it into the dealer they had never seen anything like that before. that wasn't covered under the warranty so I just bought a used throttle body you couldn't buy the new gear of course ..😡
Welcome back!
welcome back!
Nice to have you, and your “insight” back on line.
Great topic! My 09' fxd with 12K miles has a FP3 tuner and a 2-1 V&H pro pipe...cams are next and puts my mind to ease hearing I'm not throwing $$ at a POS motor ... it runs like a sewing machine at 90mph on the freeway rite now🤘🛵
Super helpful, I'm in the market for a 96 2007 and above. Thanks for your video!!!
You do need some sort of shelf with stuff on it behind you. It’s just not the same.
What up Foo! All year TC’s have their pros and cons but at the end of the day, the 2002 TC’s with a Timken bottom end, 5 speed carb are the most reliable, once the cam chest has been upgraded. This year also has the 1 1/2” final drive belt, something that’s always overlooked. I’m not bias because both my TC’s are 2002, both my TC’s are 2002 because I’m bias towards the year. YMMV.
Thanks for uploading 😎👍
I have an ‘08 Cross Bones Springer with a TC96.
Runs well, very good Motor 👍
Thanks again!
A 96 is a great engine
Glad your back! Good luck on the new set-up.
Enjoy the videos. Thanks for posting.
Great info as always! Good to see you back GF!
Glad your back!!! Great subject this week.
Thanks!
We will forgive the lighting...just kidding. Glad you are back.
Welcome back. Congrats on the new place.
All is good in the world again. Welcome back!
Really Glad You're Back. I look forward to watching your videos every week.
You do a Fantastic Job and it's Absolutely Appreciated !!!
Had a 2008 Dyna, didn’t like it, got a 2003 Dyna been riding it the last 7 years.
Well I like my 88/95 with carb .
But ; wife’s 96 / 6 speed really long strokes down the road . The ret hd mechanic says the 5 speed is a better box .
Well ; it is what it is -
Dang that timken bearing deal on both !!!-
✊🏻👍👌
Welcome back Man, Wouldn't you know it. Seems every one of your episode's is everything I need to know. Thanks GF👍
PS lighting was fine
Greetings from the UK, enjoyable video, excellent advice, l am going to stick with my 2009 96 fat boy which l love and do an S&S cam easy cam kit, dark horse compensator and head work, nice little winter project....🙂
Kickstart Saloon! My home town!
I love my 96 I have no complaints at all, it runs great
I love my 96ci with my Woods 222 cam. I am actually thinking about getting the Screamin Eagle 103 kit since it's so much cheaper and I think simpler than doing a S&S 110 kit. I wonder if it will make my Woods cam obsolete or would it still be an improvement to get it? Maybe not so much? I'd like a bit more torque and HP than I have even though with the cam it can keep up with a stock 103.
What, this guy couldn't answer you??
You should leave it alone. I have a 2010 Road King 96" Tuner 583 cam. I'm happy with mine. It doesn't run hot. Fuckin love it 34,000 miles and perfect. Rocker lockers but that's easy fix. Cams are a little noisy
Great to watch again. Have 2010 FLHTK and trying to find which has the most torque: woods tw-222 or woods tw-7h. Can't find dyno chart on 7h. Keep the information coming.
I didn't watch this click bait video.
Who ever said 96 were bad?
Great motors, all ya gotta do is change the oil. Gas em up and go.
I had 110 SE made from 96.......it was fast, especially for 900lb bike
I still have my 96ci wide glide, reckon it's a keeper, had it well longer than any other bike.
I've considered trading it in, but then I ride it....... I'm thinking I got 4 keepers and need a Sportster (XL)
Glad to see you back
I liked seeing that Blue Rocker C....
Thanks!
Thank you for the support!!
Would have been good to mention what the years and models are at which first started carrying this engine and then when it was phased out so people can really quickly know whether or not it's actually applies to them. You'd be surprised too many riders don't know any better.
Know better about what? This guy is over the top at times. All this shit about 100 HP 100 FT LBS of torque . Always this BULLSHIT about carburetion Sick of dude and his flailing arms. He's just another crazy
@GixxerFoo I just picked up a '08 Road Glide with a 96" (already at Stage 1). I'm used to a '14 Street Bob with a 103" (Stage 1). Looking for cam recommendations for the 96. Seems like I'm having to drop down to 5th a lot on the interstate to quickly pass with the 96, I do not have the issue with the 103 - I just roll on the throttle. Other than needing to adjust the clutch the low end is "ok".
Good to see you man great information love your videos keep on riding
Great to see you back brother!
Excellent review been watching you for a few years now and it's always straight to the point which what I like. 👍👍
I never had a lick of trouble outa mine 30,000 hrs miles brakes twice and 4 sets of tires on ‘07 nightrain a lot of hard riding
Love my 96” Streetbob
