Harley-Davidson Twin Cam Engines are Under Appreciated

- Harley-Davidson Twin Cam engines didn't exactly get the best welcome to the world after the Evo due some "issues". Those issues plagued the Twin Cam engine's reputation for its entire existence. Even as the years went by and the issues were corrected the Twin Cam engines were plagued by their reputation. It's not that the Harley-Davidson Twin Cam is a bad motor it's just got a bad reputation. Twin Cam engines are pretty reliable and can handle a good deal of power while still remaining reliable for many many years and miles.

What are your thoughts and luck with the Twin Cam engines?
Oh heck yeah you have that exactly right,,,, it makes me blink, my eyes, like when is that going to explode someday lol@@heyitspete6472
Great motors. I just had to replace the compensator at 10.000 miles.
But I've got plenty of horsepower and twerk.
My favorite years of the twin cam are the timken bearings & forged bottom ends. I also prefer the Delphi fuel injection or carburetors. The least amount of issues are these years
I had two Evo's before my 1999 FXDX TC88, I do my own wrenching and noticed the TC88 was a bit more refined mechanically and integrated, inspecting the cam chains I discovered S&S gear drive and Fueling 7000 oil pump, stock cams and plate, stock ignition has made it very reliable so far, the only downside is fuel consumption from the right wrist and a Mikuni 45 .
2003 RK..118,500 miles. Set #4 tensioners, lifters, 3 point engine isolators and some other misc replaced for PM. Still runs good, having some noise that I hope is the compensator and not internal engine. It's wrenching season in Ohio and will check out compensator. Never had issues with charging system, clutch always stayed in specs.
Of the twenty three Harleys I've had over the past fifty six or so years, my TwinCam 96 has been the best so far and I ride my bikes daily.
I think most, not all the issues with the twin cam engine came from Harley's desire for more money. Getting rid of timkin and pressing crank's, ect
Personally I think the 2003 88 Twin Cam is the Best engine, no crank issues nor compensator issues as long as the engine was maintained stock. The only thing to look out for and service regularly is the cam chain shoes, keeping them in check you easily get 300k miles out the engine and still running strong 💪 and enjoying my 2003 100 Anniversary Ultra Classic !❤
It’s my understanding, 2002 is the last year of the Timken bearing bottom end
@joemay7704 more importantly the cranks were forged and of low runout(didn't trash your oil pump) But stock power, or mild build/use Timken isn't necessary at all.
@@john0270I hear ya. However, given the choice between a 2002 or 2003, I’m choosing 2002.
@@joemay7704
May very well be and was that a good thing or a bad thing. My bike is from 2003 so I don't even know what I have, can you shed some light on this ?
I have 43,000 on my 2003 flstci. Flawless.
I think the Twin Cam hands down is the best sounding motor Harley made I love mine 😊
I agree
For me it's the shovel first then the twin cam a extremely close second.
I've had three: two 88s, one carbureted one fuel injected, one 103HO. Loved all of them. I still have the fuel injected 88. Never had any problems with any of them .
I love my twin cam 103 (stage 3) I've been all over a Australia on it and it's proven to be very reliable.👍👍
Love the TC88 in my 2001 Softail. Mild cams, pipes and tune are all I need (SE cams, Bassani Duals, Dynojet) and I will keep this rolling for a while.
I've had such a great experience with my 90's sportster that it will be difficult for me to get something else. The reliability of this thing has been off the charts, I love it!
I have that exact 01 purple wide glide. At 30000 miles i went with gear drive and a fueling cam chest kit. Then had the heads redone and opened up to help keep it cool. It will outrun stage 1 103s and i would trust that bike to go from coast to coast. I love it and would take that over an m8 anyday. Just my thoughts
my 103, 103h.p with 103tq. 100٪ efficient motor. I can't get the smile off my face.
Gix,I love my TC,the only downfall of this motor is the amount of heat it omits, crazy hot, gonna put some fans on it and see how she goes, but overall she’s been great
Love the twin cam! For all the reasons you mentioned. I have a 103 that's now a 107 and I'll never get rid of it
I have a 107 put back to a 103HO. I'll never part with it.
Love the twin cam 103 runs great with 68,000 + miles still strong as ever
2002 Fatboy, stock crankshaft with zero runout issues & Timken bearings. Mikuni HSR45 carb, 97" S&S top end, S&S fueling plate/oil pump, fueling lifters & push rods, ported stock H-D heads, S&S Cobra 2 into 1 header, S&S gear drive cams. I've been wrenching & riding on H-D's for over 50 years, this bike with the progressive shocks & engine mods is a pure joy to ride. It has earned a permanent home in my garage on reliablity alone.
I have a 2002 88 twincam, got over a hundred thousand miles, tensioners change once, serviced regularly.
I have 96 twincam with over 90 thousand, both of them crank every time, both run very strong. 👍
I love my Rushmore TC with the high output. It’s given me no problems, and I have no desire to upgrade to the M8. Frankly I didn’t even know the TC had a bad rep (outside of those early chain tensioners).
Me either. Occasional compensator stuff but nothing major. I thought they had a great reputation. #TeamTC
Love my Rushmore 103.
I have a 2007 Road King with the 96. One of the first things I did after buying it new was change the pipes, the factory electronic ignition to a programmable one, and a better air cleaner to breathe better. It still runs like a rocket. Only use amsoil. Best Harley I ever had!
I will be buried with my twin cam. It gave me a ton of problems, but I still love it. I have since had the entire motor rebuilt using the S&S Sidewinder 110. The g-force can just about make me hurl my lunch. I kept the heads stock (because it's a touring bike!), threw a set of SE585 cams in it, and it's all good. I got screwed by the crank issue, so my cases were split, and in jumps the S&S 4 3/8 crank. Also tuned by techno-research. I just love twin cams for the exceptional sound that positively no m8 can give you. Technology? Na, you can keep it. Nothing like the visceral feel of a rowdy twin cam!
I love it, I’ve had one for 15 years and it’s still running strong!
I have a 2008 Twin Cam that from purchase was bumped up to a Stage II+ 103. + meaning it's not a Stage III, but more than a Stage II.
15 years and never a problem with the engine. Went through a couple of AGM lead batteries, but switched to an Antigravity ATX-20 HD RS Lithium-ION battery, shaved 15 pounds and never looked back. Click/boom every time.
I’ll keep my evo, with the carburetor.
I like the old school, mechanical feel, of evo.
I know it’s not as much power, as modern motors.
I ride, not race my Harley.
I’ll race my Ducati .
If people want to be boy racers ,they need to buy a Hayabusa ,not a Hog
I’ve got a TC88 stage 1 (and a bit lol) love it. Basically everyone who doesn’t have a Harley likes to hate on all Harley’s & people with a Harley like to hate on someone else’s Harley. Kinda strange really! 🤷♂️
Original stock 96" in my 07 FLTR with 195K miles. Never been rebuilt; cam chain tensioners replaced at 160K (I still have the originals as souvenirs). Smoother running and better fuel mileage than the 103" in my 14 FLSTC with 26K. A bit easier to service than my 94 FXR with the stock original 80" Evo... I've done most of my long distance touring on the 96"
Great to hear! I have 07 RKC, clocking up the miles
Awesome story. Love you high mileage guys.
Whats your secret?
@@MrBradfordchild I have the Harley maintenance manuals for all three bikes following the recommended service intervals. The parts and service people at Harley dealerships locally and across the country have been very helpful. I wipe down the bikes almost after every ride as part of a visual inspection. I have a lifeline to a retired Harley mechanic who understands my older bikes with advice.
@@stlchuckhd thanks for the reply. That's what I'm doing with my bike. Great news!
When you fix the tc88's cam tensioner/ cam plate/ oil pump ..... you have one of the best running, most reliable TC,s built. Its not as simple as the evo , but overall I would absolutely buy another one.... the next one will be a 103
You'll love a 103 when you get one. Mine ran great !
@@jimfischione2743 I've ridden one non HO completely stock with 15k miles on it, ( for 400 miles) and one that was a HO stage 1 ( for 300 miles)and both ran great, the HO was extremely impressive and that 6 speed made highway alot easier on the rpms.
@@ckthompson7928 I haven't ridden a 103 6spd, on highway sounds like it would hold it's own very easily. I ride a Stage 2, TC 88, 2001 FXD. It does well when traffic isn't too heavy, I am high reving in 5th going 90 with more power to go, but that's all I really need. Stay a step ahead of traffic. Having a 6th speed would be a luxury in my world, but the older Shovel heads I think had only 4 spd. so there's that.
@@jondent2544 ive got a 06 road king stage 2 tc 88 and couldn't ask for more out of it. The 5spd has its benefits, if you go ahead to head with a six speed and you do a short shift in first say pull to 3800 rpm and lay on it when you hit second you stay ahead of the six speed until about 60mph then they're gearing allows them to pull away from you. I love em all , it's not a problem, I can stop whenever I want.
I love my twin cam 96. Have had two bikes with them. Love the sound of one even with stock exhaust.
i had a 2003 Electra Glide standard carbureted from the factory i sold it with almost 100k miles and had ZERO issues, it was stock except for a pair of Sampson slip on mufflers, it was one of the best bikes i have owned and i have had 8 Harleys. Great motor as far as I'm concerned.
Because my crankshaft runout was minimal I was able to go with gear driven cams. 2001 FXDXT. I’m pretty happy with it…
We have two bikes with twin cam engines , an 07 road glide and am 07 dyna wide glide . Both of these engines have been really good. Yes they run hotter then my evo but I have been very happy with them. 10:47
Been riding a TC88B for 21 years and so far 👍. Currently about 64500 miles on it and I hope it holds out until I can afford a Touring Harley-Davidson with the M8. But as of now.... no regrets.
It’s a work horse. I love mine. I have a 2009 Electra Standard retired traffic bike from a local PD. It’s super smooth, torquey enough, and super reliable.
I never ran into issue with either of my tc88b motors, and never have had a problem on my tc96b either.. But, I also am not really that hard on them, and am changing the oil every 3k regardless..
I've had 2 twin cams, an 06 efi and a 00 with a carb, which I still have. I have to say that I've been reasonably happy with both. I've liked a few evos too. Every Harley I've ever owned has had some screwy issue that the factory let slide. Overall, though, I would still rather deal with the newer ones than the shovelheads and ironheads that I came up on. They're faster and more reliable, IMHO.
Had a 2000 88 5 speed. Loved the heck outta that once it got cams and a gear drive. The tensioner shoes were almost destroyed at 13000 miles but fortunately it was dealt with before failure occurred. Ran the piss out of it for 69000 trouble free miles!! Now have a 110 low rider s and am equally happy!
Love the channel sir!
78,000 on 2005 Deluxe. Have driven it hard. Reliable with no problems
my first twin cam bike was a 2008 softtail custom. Its all about maintenance of your ride.
Love my twincam 103ci. Never misses a beat. 46000km on it.
I love my twin cam 103 way more than my 117 m8. Sound feel. Just needs the power of the 117. But my 117 sounds like a tractor not a Harley
I have a 99 fxdx with 88k miles. I didn't change the cam/tensioner/pads until 78k miles!
Hoping to hit 100k by the end of 2024.
That's great to hear, I have almost 60k miles on my 2001 FXD. I upgraded to SE Cam/tensioner/pads at 25k miles though just to be safe.
2009 fltr 96’ 54K on it … good motor. This month the dealership changed the compensator, the umbrella valves, some gaskets.. Front tire front bearing for the wheel.. I think it’s a bike and motor combination.. if I had a passenger and they were heavy, I would want 103.. but I ride solo and pearl black… I hope you’re feeling well. Everybody take care.
I ❤️ my 05 twin cam 88. It's got 86000 miles on it and still running good.. other than routine things and two sets of tensioners it's been worry free and a blast with a tune and thunder header
You know the key to keeping those bikes going for the high miles and it's keeping up with your tensioners.
Twin Cam 88B, hell yeah, I'm content. Heritage Springer 2003, bought 95 c.i. Screaming Eagle barrels/pistons, when I ordered bike, in May 2002, from Barnetts, and only recently installed them, couple thousand miles ago, for no other reason, because I retired, and had time. 82,XXX miles on bike, and am so satisfied!
103HO here, last and best version. Still sounds like a Harley, too!
Love, love, love my 2004 twin cam Road King!!❤❤❤
I absolutely love my 103 twin cam!
I've had 2 twin cams, both 103 HO's put mild cams in both with 2-1 exhaust, Power Vision and Target Tune. Both ren really well, but I never really beat on either one, no burnouts or full throttle banging gears. Always worry about the crank. Also had 2 evo Sportsters, one carmed and one fuel injected. Bored the 07 ou to 1250, wild cams, lots of head work by Hammer, was putting out about 110 hp at arounf 7000 rpms. Beat the shit out ov it and it just came back for more! I think the evo sportster engine id the best Harley ever made.
I 100% agree with you about the Sportster engines. I have a 103 Road King as well as the Sportster, and as much as I love the Road King that Sportster engine is so damn sweet!
i have only owned a twin cam 96. its been a great motor. just recently this past spring took it to a 107, bumped compression up, complete head job, ported polished and bigger valves. cams etc. runs great and is a very fun bike to ride
Hey Gixer another great video I had a M8 traded it in for a 15 RG awesome bike it did have a motor explosion but that was down to the milage which I wasn't aware of but Now awesome balanced crank new pistons barrels and Port and polished I'm still surprised how quick it is I don't think I will be getting rid of it anytime soon.
Must mention USA imports in New Zealand great guy and he knows his stuff and how to build a engine.
All the best from New Zealand 🇳🇿
I have an 05 twin cam 88b in my deluxe. It’s carbureted with 17000 miles. Stage one, screaming eagles. Love the power and torque . Keep checking the cam tensioners.
I had the 120R motor and I put the 120RX upgrade kit in it before installing it in my streetglide. It was a monster motor putting out over 140 HP at the wheel and yet it was also the smoothest running Harley engine I ever owned in my 45 years of owning them. And the bike ran relativly cool and was just as happy cruising across the state as it was hotrodding from light to light! It always instantly started hot or cold and never had a problem in the 6 years I owned it despite the fact I would wind it up every chance I had!
I have the 103 Hi Output RXYZ upgrade kit in it and am currently enjoying over 205 HP at the wheel and 190 Torque. It is by FAR the smoothest, fastest, get the hell out of my way engine Harley I've ever owned in my 46 years of owning Harleys. Beautiful bikes.
I have a 2012 103 twin cam I have 146000 Km about 91000 miles no issues runs great. Never been torn apart I do all my service and never let me down.I did change the oils to synthetic which made a big difference in the amount of heat. Runs cooler
I have a 2007 Night Train, and a 2016 CVO Pro Street Breakout. I love my Twin Cams, and have zero desire to own an M8.
With all that we now know about the twin cam it is potentially a bad ass motor that can produce a lot of horsepower and still be reliable. I think it’s a great motor.
I have a 2014 FLHTK 103 twin cam. Put 7000 miles on it this summer. It's a great motorcycle.
I had an 02 Electra glide standard. TC 88. Rode that thing all over the eastern US and Canada. Never a single issue ever period. I have nothing bad to say about them. Everyone I rode with had them as well. I've moved on to the M8 so Farr so good
2009 fltr 96’ good motor.
My t.c 88 in my 03 heritage is pushing over 40,000 mi and I don't even think the cam chain tensioners have been changed out yet but I'm getting ready to put a complete fueling kit in
i had a 2009 96 twin cam sounded awesome and pulled very well
I Personally bought one of the first twin cam's in 1999. After I put 15,000 miles on it the problems with the timing chain and tensioners were becoming well known. I had H-D DLR install S&S gear drive with 510 cams in it with a new oil pump, they also installed an after market tuner so I had basically an after market stage 2. This really improved the bottom and mid range power and the bike was very fun to ride. I put 100,000 miles on it before I sold it to my nephew who still has it. the engine has never been apart and has never leaked oil. Oh and I had also moved the vent tube strait down from the motor with a place PCV hose from NAPA because from day 1 I was getting oil dripping from the air filter. I don't know if that added to the engine life or not. I took a 3600 mile trip with it jut before I sold it and it used a pint of oil.
I also own a 1998 EVO that we had to rebuild the engine with 92,000 miles on it because it was literally using a quart of oil every 50 miles. Both bikes had the oil changed every 3,000 miles through their lives.
I now own a 2014 103 TC with an after market stage 1 with a power vision tuner license and I love the bike and how it runs. I also own a 2017 Milwaukee 8 with an aftermarket stage 2, CR480 cam, S&S cam plate, oil pump, lifters, cuffs, and a TSS tuner. I also installed an additional crankcase vent using a vented dipstick from Feuling. This is also a very fun bike to ride. I will probably have to replace the cylinders, pistons, at some point with the M8 from what I have been reading and expecting head gasket failure and ring failure around 50,000 miles. Once that happens and I replace those parts with good aftermarket ones I expect that it will be ready for another 100,000 miles but I will probably never put those kind of miles on it because I am riding less than I used to.
In my opinion the TC is a great motor better than the EVO for both power and engine life. The M8 I expect after all of the mods will also be a great motor that will be long lasting and boy the power is so much fun.
TC 103 here. Great motor, much better sound than the M8
Love my 88, IMHO the carb'd models are pretty magical... Stage 1 and watch the (still factory) tensioners, and I'm going strong at 60k. Can't imagine getting into the full electronic $40k + models, I just prefer the basic simple setup
Ain't nothing wrong at all with that setup!
I've got an 05 88ci. Stock with 55000 mile love it ni issues..... also have a 103 ci. 07 ...(both softtail) 103 has the screaming eagle kit. Heads cylinders and cams... love it as well....No issues..Taken both in 3 to 400 mile rides
So far I love the twin cam. The sound and the feel. The heat is a small issue but in all it’s not a bad engine. I did love the evo too.
The Twin Cams sounds good and they do make some power, good tune and an oil cooler makes a big difference!
I had two oil pumps fail on my 07 CVO in the last twelve years. Had to rebuild it from the crank up twice.
Fixed the issues and still ride it.
My 96” is doing great, in the shop to add a cam and a race clutch rn…compensator has been fine for me? Idk maybe im lucky. Put about 15k miles on the stock engine in the last year, VERY reliable. I thought i would have problems , was originally looking at a sporty for reliability but the TC96 has been absolutely solid for me, rain or shine
I have a 2016 with the 103 and I just got a M8 114. The power difference is definitely noticeable, as is the heat difference. The M8 is actually a very nice engine too. The twin cam sounds better.
Harley did a good job to put some space going from the 103 to the M8. M8 is a really good motor for the power and ease to make power, I agree 100% on that Twin Cam sounding better. The M8 sound isn't bad it's just not what were used to.
😎👍
Once again... Some great information...
I have a twin cam 103 converted to a Screaming Eagle 110 ...
Love the additional torque...
Hated waiting 75 days for parts...
I love the twincam engine, it’s easy to work on, there’s tons of up grades & you can get an engine to do whatever you want it too, from cruiser to flat out street rocket!
i have a 2014 ultra. love the sound and the engine
I have a 13 ultra 45000 miles stage one fp3 no issues so far. There is a couple of old shovelheads in the garage that I've had for 15yrs or so I'd ride any of them ocean to ocean anytime harley's new or old if taken care of will last forever
I would just like to say I look forward to your videos every week. They are very informative and on spot to you title subject. No click bait. Guess I am just getting tired of some of the other channels with 10% title Subject 90% B.S. I don't care about. Thanks for your hard work.
I’ve had two Evos and 3 Twin Cams. My 2008 96 cu inch is my favorite. Plenty of power and very dependable.
Got a '02 Super Glide. Put a S&S 509 complete cam chest kit in it. Absolutely love it. Also ride a '77 Super Glide. BIG difference in power, TC88 is very reliable as far as I'm concerned
Cathing up with this video. I stupily sold my 02 FXSTS years ago with TC88. I had put in the S&S gear drive w/S&S cams into V&H big radius. Carb'd. Nice increase in power & sound. Around 20+k mi. Guy who bought it has over 100k and ridden very hard. Breaks my heart. I replaced my FXSTS with another this time a 96 Evo. Getting ready to do the lifters & p-rods. Want to cam & bearing at same time. I'm also waiting delivery of a 2015 Freewheeler 103TC. 20k mi. Also have/had 06 FLHRI inj TC88. Only 14.6k mi. Runs perfect with true dual Rineharts. BTW I run RedLine 3 holes. Great. Just my $.02.
I feel your pain, I've sold bikes and then saw them again out in wild and wish I never sold it. Really kicking myself if I didn't have to sell it either.
Id say the 2016 Twin Cam was the best of the current period. Last of the line before the 107 was sorted, rolling with wet heads who could complain. Sure the water pump was sub par but once replaced with a 107 pump its rock solid.
My bought new 2011 103 Road King has been excellent, the salesman advised updates, 6 months later I had them done. SEAC, SERT, SE255 cam, new headers (Cat GONE), dyno brought it all together, and it transformed from bike to beast. Heat was gone, and 6 gear developed purpose in two up riding. A real treasure to ride. Mobil 1 V-Twin Syn in all 3 holes, keeping this bike for a long, long time.
Love my 2003 FXDL. Lots and lots of fun
I’m on my second TC88, an 06 Road King fuel injected. My first was a 2001 Deuce, carbureted. No issues with either. I’m going to install a Jagg oil cooler on the Road King this weekend.
the 103 was my fav
Love my 103.
My 88 efi never had problems but that macaroni fuel injection, good luck with finding parts.
typical HD attitude ,you cant get the parts you need.............................
I have 148,000 miles on my 2006 Ultra Classic. Once I upgraded the cam chain tensioners to hydraulic at 50,000, it’s been mostly wear & tear repairs. Just got it back in the road for the 2024 season and it’s running great. Very happy with my original 88 Twin Cam and no desire to get something newer.
148K is awesome and highly impressive!
gday gixxer foo ive got a 2014 amber whiskey 103 fatboy with 2 into 1 v&h etc it goes very well
Can never go wrong with the twin cam 96 like my 07 street glide!! No cam chain tensioner issues or anything else you have to worry about in the 88. My personal opinion the twin cam 96 and the twin cam 103 are the best motors Harley has ever and will ever create!!
Love my 99’ TC 88. Carbureted and mild cam sweetness.
Great video, thanks!
My 08 TC with 103 stage III pro kit runs strong no problems, keeps me smiling every time i crank the throttle
I haven't owned one. A friend of mine has a 2002 Softail Standard that he rides daily and has had very few problems with it. He absolutely loves it. I still love my '95 Evo Electra Glide with almost 102,000 miles on it. If I decide to get rid of my 883 Sportster, I may go for a TC Dyna Wide Glide. I would like to do a Dyna with a Springer front end on it. Get a 100" big bore kit with a set of Wood 555s and mildly ported heads. Should be a good fun set up.
Dyna wide glide with a springer front end has been on my mind too.
🤔

I gearing up to buy a 2010 with the 103 on it. This video made me feel all warm and fuzzy about that decision 😊
I've riden a shovel head when I was 17 loved it. An Evo at 21 loved it, owned neither. I didn't take the leap of ownership from metric to standard until 50, now at 55. I've bought 3 still own 2 all 110s none have broken my heart yet so the romance continues. Lots of roll-on power on the streetglide and my Breakout, it'll still stretch my ears back!
Have 2 of them, 05RK and 2012CVO, love them both. Had an M8 Street Bob for 1 year that was great, Woods Stage 2, beat the crap out of and it took it all, traded for the 2012 CVO, no regrets.
Love my 2012 Heritage Twin Cam.
My 2011 street bob (bought new) runs like a beast granted here in Wisconsin it sits in the garage 6 months out of the year. Put in the 110 tire shredder kit in 2017 when it came out and have had ZERO issues with it, dyno'd at 106hp/122tq which is plenty fast enough for me!!!!
I'm not ready for the m8. I have a 1999 dyna wide glide with the 88 carbed and stage 2 and a slim 103 stage 2 and having so much fun love the feel and the sound of both.
I had a 2002 Fatboy. With gear drive ss 510 cams. Best thing I ever did . The motor always delivered and was bullet proof.
