Your gather doesn't start until you pick up the dribble with two hands or put one hand under the ball. His gather doesn't begin until the 0:16 second mark. From there he has 1 gather step + 2 steps. And that's all he takes. This comment section is full of a bunch of basketball casuals.

That's not true, you're allowed one gather step after you pick up your dribble, this is known as the "zero step". In addition to the zero step you also receive 2 more steps taking the grand total of steps allowed to 3. Also while you are in the process of gathering the ball, just before you pick up your dribble, you're allowed to take as many steps as you want. in other words while gathering the ball you can take as many steps as you want, then after you have gathered the ball you get one gather or zero step as it's know, and two additional steps before it is called a travel

According to rules, the only actual travel was the last one. You can delay beginning of gather as long as your hand isnt directly beneath the ball. This means (in theory) you can take 1000 steps without dribbling before gather, as long as your hand isnt lifting the ball.
