After finally noticing two of my track rollers badly worn, I decided to go ahead and replace all four. After all, I put new track chains on a year ago and I'm not about to wear them flat any sooner if I can help it!
The process is very easy. The video is 16 min, but with proper tools laid out, I'd say it's little more than 10 min per roller. Aside from the cost ($80-90/roller) there is no excuse not to fix them. And hey, it's not all lost. At nearly 50 lbs each, and scrap steel at $.03/lb, you get like $1.50 if you cash in!

I guess they’re proud of me. I’m sure proud of them. They’re really good kids. Not so much on being actual helpers, but they keep themselves busy and are generally respectful and very intelligent. I like to have them around when I work. It opens their eyes and they ask more questions
@@TomBrueggen certainly they are Tom, they love you and respect you deeply, i think it is the best class for them to see how their dad dedicated to his work, and in the future, regardless of what they would do, they will be as dedicated as their father do, Coz their father set a such great example.

My dad owned sawmills in Arkansas. I look back on the things he trusted me with I am amazed. I was 6.7.8.9 years old . I had my own team of skidding mules. I would go off into the hills alone every day with the mules (except Sundays!) during the summer and Saturdays during the winters, and skid logs out of the hills down to the mill he kept to run himself. Usually about a two-mile walk. His other two mills were foremen run and mobile. Moving them was like moving a circus with carnival rides. I learned to feed, water and care for my animals, had to fix harness, curry them (I was too small to harness up in the mornings-I), but I could take the harnesses off at night. I had to take care of them first before dinner or bed. Dad treated me like any other man of the crew---and by golly, it wasn't long before I had their respect. They treated me very much as an equal. But, I was totally in love with those mules. I would swear they understood every word I said and I understood them, too.
Business finally flopped, lumber prices crashed, and that was the end. When the bankers came and took the mills and the mules, I cried like a baby. My mules! It took me a long time to get over it. But, wow! To learn all that as a little kid! Today, family services would have come and put me in an orphanage for abused children.
You keep it up, "Dad". That the best a dad can do for his kids. The Best!

Thanks! The best part of that is that I didn't know they had done that either. I discovered it going back and editing the video before uploading. They are my life for sure. I try to have them around everything I do (when it's safe) so they can learn this stuff too. I want them to grow up smarter than me!
My kids are all grown now and I miss that age. Enjoy every minute of it bro. Heck my grand son is older than your kids. Ooohh just got a knee pain. lol
Ah come on, you're not that old. Speaking of knee pain though, I'm still wondering if 3 mos worth of recovery time was worth it to "fix" my knee, ha! I can only imagine the aches I'll get when I get older.
Yeah those kids are pretty funny. They don't make many appearances, as I normally don't have the camera on the tripod like this. My daughter cracks me up when she spots the camera and gets that little grin as she approaches it. I didn't know she did that until I watched the video, so it was a fun surprise!
Hope the negetive comments didn't run your day, cause I think you did a good job for what you had to work with. Thinking outside the box is ingenuity. That's something we are losing in today's kids. Soo WELL DONE !
RANDALLOLOGY doesn’t phase me. If anything the biggest struggle is not to lash back out. It’s really easy to sit there and be a keyboard cowboy. Unless of course the typing gives them blisters on their soft hands. Ha! This equipment won’t fix itself and I can’t afford to pay others, especially not when it’s just nuts and bolts.
Tom Brueggen I know where you are coming from when you say can't afford to pay others. That's one of the reasons I started my chnl. That it can help others repair or understand how stuff works.
Besides, if one paid someone else to fix all their stuff, then they would never learn to do anything.

One thing you should consider doing every day or couple days is clean the mud out of your tracks. These rollers probably wouldn't have seized if there wasn't hard built up dirt stuck around it.
That is a great point! Lord knows my tracks are always full of mud. Sandy mud at that! I think it would have seized anyway at some point, just from age, but certainly some preventative maintenance can't hurt. Thanks!

Thanks! No I don't take my parenting advise from the internet. I grew up on a farm and can't begin to explain the value I gained in life from being around things like this and just absorbing knowledge. My 5 yr old would blow your mind with the things she rattles off about the machines and just real life things in general. They don't learn that stuff from Daniel Tiger!
good operators only know lol! FYI next time you try blocking somthing up make sure you have a soild surface between both sides other wise it will just end up crushing that wood right into the dried mud cleaning your tracks for you and crushing your hand at the same time
my OCD would not have let me work on it until I had cleared all the dirt off. Crazy how much that first one was worn.
Yeah I’m pretty well always in mud unfortunately. If I properly cleaned the tracks every time, then that’s all I’d ever be able to do. Need to get my kids to do it 😂

Have you ever work on a escavator before its a real good idea to keep your tracks clean and when taking the top rollers out using some kind of penetrating oil first make it a whole lot easier to take the bolts out
Ok. in the first 20 seconds I admit that I'm not a good caretaker of this machine. And then around 5:35 when I go to loosen the bolts, I mentioned that I have a can of penetrating oil. Am I a career mechanic? Obviously not. Can I figure out how to pull 4 bolts and put them back in? Obviously so. This is a farm machine. I'm learning as I go. This stuff is not complicated. Just bigger nuts and bolts. I'm quickly becoming an excavator mechanic.
Hi how do you know if have a bad roller when I track my digger one of the tracks is shaky ? Thanks
In this case my top roller was seized and had worn flat, so it was pretty obvious. Set your bucket down on the problem side to lift the track off the ground and then rotate the track. Have someone else watch all the rollers to make sure they are rolling smoothly. You need to inspect your whole undercarriage. I don’t know what “shaking” means. It could just be loose. Tracks too loose can fall off. Too tight wears them out faster.

Best I can tell you is to inspect the entire undercarriage. Don’t forget about your idler and slack adjuster! If that’s worn out if could cause a shake when tracking the machine. Good luck. Let us know what you find!

Yes, these were some very gratifying repairs! Well I tried to do the barn first, but wife wouldn't have it. So we settled on the garage being first. It will act as a temp house to get us moved out and settled at the farm, then we'll build the main dream house once all the finances are back in line. Well of course not. But I do carry it with me all day every day, regardless of where I am or what I'm doing. To me it's just another tool in the belt, along with my pocket knife, wallet and keys.

Man I had some lower rollers I had to take a torch and beat the crap out of them to get it done
Surprisingly I've not found too much on this machine that is that tight. These bolts appear bad, but once I put that cheater bar on I barely had to lay into it. Just all my other tools are more for light duty vehicles so I just didn't have the leverage. I'm no stranger to getting the old smoke wrench out though when needed! Thanks for watching.

Young kids should not be around heavy equipment while it's being serviced. Especially when you have a hanging load.
That’s easy enough to say, but I don’t fully agree (obviously). If I were working on the hydraulics I wouldn’t have them around. And if this were truly a suspended load I wouldn’t either. God forbid the chain breaks here. The bucket stays up and the track just falls slack on the rollers where it would naturally ride. Note if you watch the whole video I scolded my son to back up when I was pushing the cheater bar. If it would have broke it would have hit him in the head. I believe kids should be around as much as possible with proper supervision. This was an excellent lesson for them on torque and leverage, simple machines, and of course basic wrenchin’ skills.
why do diesel mechanics carry guns
Maybe your question is really "why does anyone carry a gun?" I shouldn't put words in your mouth I suppose. I've stated my reasons in the comments. I'd simply ask "why would someone NOT carry a gun?" Although I'll admit sometimes it does tend to pull my pants down a little.

Why do you carry a gun . When your working . Just curious . I know your laws are different in america . In britain you would get 6 years jail instantly , for just having an unloaded one in your possession , ten to fifteen if it were loaded . Thats. Without it even being fired .
Fava Fava it’s my right to carry, and the world is crazy. Never know who might walk up on me out here. I carry all day, every day. Church, shopping, whatever. I have a family to protect though I pray I never have to. Some people carry just whenever they feel like it. I’ve made it a habit to always carry, so I’m not uncomfortable or feel odd when I do carry.
I’ve actually made other videos and then realized my gun was showing so I didn’t post them. But then I figured if it just shows, and I’m not making a scene about it, then it shouldn’t offend anyone.
It’s not about being macho. It just makes sense to me. Fact is, all the people that hoot and holler and say they hate guns, are the same people hoping the cops come when they feel threatened. Because the cops carry guns : ).
If I call the cops out here, I’d be lucky to have one show up in 10 min.
@@TomBrueggen I used to go exploring with my kids...took them all over the desert, taught them how to get along in the wild. I never went out armed. One day, only a few miles from our home we encountered two people with .22 rifles. And suddenly, I heard a round buzz right past my ear. We were on dirt bikes. I had my two sons lay down their bikes and we crawled up behind a mound of dirt, barely big enough to cover us. I put them as close under the little mound as possible and covered them. Those two people sat on top of the hill and shot all around us, laughing, for a good 15 minutes. I was 101st Airborne with a year of hard fighting in Vietnam! But that day behind that pile of dirt was as scared as I ever got because my kids were with me and I couldn't do a thing about it. It was the last time I went anywhere unarmed...both my boys (now aged 54 and 47 are the same. Never again! lesson learned!

ACADMan thanks for the support! People can carry if they want, or not. I don’t care either way if they are responsible. Sorry to hear you were assaulted by some punks like you were. I want my kids to be exposed to guns and choose of they like it or not. I won’t force it on them. Right now they know not to touch Daddy’s gun, because it’s a tool they haven’t learned to safely use. But they are not afraid of it either.
Childs should be not allowed in that area..
My children are safe in this area. Whereby I appreciate your concern in general, in this case they were far from any danger. More likely to have tripped over their own feet, fell down and got a cut or bruise, than have the equipment catastrophically fail and harm them. I believe in real world education for my kids. They’re with me almost all the time. Learning by doing. Thanks for watching!
