  • When working with tools Ive seen a lot of people not taking the time to setup their tools to be faster and safer. You want to make all your tools run the same direction to keep from sticking a knife on a spinning tool the wrong way. Here is how you can reverse your bench grinder in 3 minutes

      My dad's pedestal grinder had a reverse switch on his. Did not need it very often but it sure was handy when you did!

    I just subscribed. I sharpen a lot of knives and use the same set up with the belt grinders. I have 3 cheap 1x30 HF that I also flip on their back so the belt is going away from you. Each one has its own belt so it doesn’t need to be changed. They are lined up on the bench so each machine is the same height etc.

I only wish the hf sanders we’re really 1/3 hp and better bearings ( noisy) If you ever try a sander with a real 1/3 you wonder how hf rates the hp. How/where do you work? Easier method is to turn the whole grinder 180 with the switch facing to the rear. Use a momentary foot switch instead. No reaching to the rear to access the on/off switch. Spin it back to factory position for standard operation. Less than 30 seconds. Plus you now of the safety feature of the foot switch.

      What I don't show in the video is big chip removal. If a lot of metal needs to be removed its fastest to put the apex on the belt so the spine is up. grind the correct contour while grinding away the chip. Then decide if you need to thin the knife before sharpening. Often I talk to the customer about thinning since the knife will look different than when I got it.

    Isn't there a risk of the spindle lock nuts coming loose while the grinder is being operated? The lock nuts are usually tightened in the opposite direction of wheel spin tp prevent them coming off as per bicycle pedals with a reverse thread on one pedal, so by reversing the direction of spin, lock nuts tightning torque will now be compromised.

    Actually I did find a way to run my bench grinder in either direction.
    A few years ago the centrifical switch in my bench grinder came loose and slide over so that it would not run unless I push the grinding wheel in One direction or the other.
    But when I do push it , it will continue running full speed in the direction that I push it!!!
    Normally that's a indication of a bad capacitor, but on some it also means your certificate switch is not working right.
    The centrifical switch in any electric motor switches windings from start windings to run windings.

You don’t want to stress the wires so check clockwise and counterclockwise for what’s best. If it’s too tight abort unless you’re confident about adding the wire

      I like it’s not worth the cost. You need a dc motor to go with it. I increased my motor to 1/2 hp. Plenty for my work. But because the speed controller has a brain when I start it on my generator it thinks there is a power problem as it spools up the generator. The fix was to tell the controller I have a 1/4 hp but when loaded double the power. This hits the generator softer. Also I have it start softer to help but I use the brake feature to stop fast for belt changes.
      I would not recommend due to cost. It was about $500 -600 for controller and motor

    • @FREEHAND.WETGRINDER
      @FREEHAND.WETGRINDER  Před 4 lety +2

      ShyRage1, clock or counter? It’s up to you. Here is my situation and the right decision for me. I try to hold my knives flat for all tools. It makes freehand sharpening easier to get the right angle on the stones. Example: I use the armature wire on my tormek/wen for proper angle with the knives held flat. Then when I go to the grey scotch bright wheel and felt polishing wheel I again hold knives flat but these wheels at aliens when I line up the sharp edge with the motor housing nearest the wheel. This is also the thinnest motor housing if you’re looking. I find these points with the tormek angle gauge. As the wheels get smaller I have to recheck my mark. But always the knives are flat. Only tool I change the knife angle is the belt sander and the. Finishing grinder that I have mounted on custom stand so I can work under it for seeing results and incase it throws the knife. Remember- I’m working at farmers markets and throwing knives out of the trailer is very bad. Also I’m doing a lot of knives at markets. I have to be efficient. I’m doing 50-100 knives a day 5-6 hr. I put more effort in efficiency than others need to.
      Always remember this. There are a lot of ways to achieve a very sharp edge. I’m trying new ideas a lot. It keeps it fun. I use my tooling enough to justify the cost of trying new tools/ stones etc... just yesterday someone read a better way of doing toothy edges. I tried it today on about 20 knives and decided to adjust what they were doing for even better/more consistent results. And once again I’m doing something different. It keeps it from being boring. Look at comments for (Part 1) video

    What a stupid idea, the locking nuts on a bench grinder go in the direction so that when the bench grinder is in operation they stay tight and in place, reverse the direction and you risk the wheels coming off and causing an an accident.....a serious accident. Also how is this a "trade secret"? I've worked in an engineering capacity for close to 40 years and NEVER has anyone been stupid enough to do something like this. You sir are a danger to the public posting a video like this.

    • @FREEHAND.WETGRINDER
      @FREEHAND.WETGRINDER  Před 7 měsíci

      Thank you for your opinion. Sometimes things are done that have consequences. But in this case you need to think of what is actually going on. First the benefit is when using a bench grinder for knife sharpening you use the top of the wheel not the front face. The direction needs to be reversed. Either by turning the whole unit around. This is the easiest but the switch is now on the back of the grinder. Turning it off and on 100 times a day eventually you will bite your inner forearm. Or if you’re wearing long sleeves it can be far worse. By doing what I showing all that is happening is essentially, the motor stays put, base is rotated 180 deg. Then you turn it to have the switch in the front. The motor will still be turning the same direction just turned around. Hope this helps explain.

    Why wouldn't you sharpen from the bottom? Also why wouldn't you just turn the whole thing around if you were dead set on sharpening from the top? The thing about Wheels is no matter where you are if it's spinning at some point they're going to be spinning away and towards you. Everything in this video is strange and unnecessary. I saw this video a while ago and it immediately stopped me from getting advice on CZcams Forever

    • @FREEHAND.WETGRINDER

      All my tools are approached with the knife flat and edge away. Having a habit is the safest way to do things that include high speed spinning wheels and sharp knives. Nothing is as exciting as having just one tool spinning the opposite direction.
      And as to sharpening from the bottom. I guess you like to sharpen knives with the edge scrapping the metal base, but it isn't my first choice.
      Also if you just turn the tool around you have to reach over the spinning tool and hit the switch. Now we both know how easy that is unless your doing it often. Like you "I'm sure" we've almost sharpened 60,000 knives. At least I have. Setting tools up right is better that setting them up wrong.
      Perhaps you don't want to get advice on CZcams but trust me Matt you need to get it from somewhere! Seriously!
