- The running joke has been that Canadians all have a super high cervix. Until very recently all of the menstrual cups cough Diva cough were too long for folks with a low cervix or even average. Canada still lacks a TRUE low cervix cup that's approved by Health Canada, but it has newer menstrual disc options that can work for a low cervix. This video is a companion to a full Canada Cup + Disc Guide on Period Nirvana that lists every Health Canada approved product. It's also my way of asking people to stop blaming me for the lack of access to products in Canada. My DM's and comment sections and inbox are full of complaints and sometimes outright anger about Period.Shop or brands I carry not shipping to Canada. I promise you it's not because we hate Canada.

Low cervix people in Canada are crying. Thank you for publicly identifying this problem. What gets me is how few brands offer different lengths. Also some brands neglect to even tell you how their product is. Your chart is so helpful. Thank you!

As a Canadian, I can say that Health Canada is ridiculously strict on what they approve of. For the life of me, I cannot understand WHAT it is they have a problem with in regards to the menstrual products that are sold in the US. I'm sad that I am unable to use your Hello disk as I love its design, but I also recognize that it isn't your fault. Hopefully this changes in the future ❤
The US is very permissive with its medical device approval and they have let dangerous products on the market because you can get approved based on a similar product being approved or get in if the product was on market before the regulation was put in place. These two criteria are not exculsive meaning that you can get approval for a device based on a previous device that was grandfathered in and therefore no studies were done on that object. Health Canada requires companies to prove that the products don't cause TSS and it takes more time and is often not necessarily that worth it for brands

That's simply not true due to the fact that every menstrual product, including pads (extremely rare), can LEAD to TSS, not cause. That's why our menstrual products have warnings and disclaimers. With that idea, no menstrual product, except for pads (which most consider the "safest"), is safe for people to use. As a diva cup user, I love it WHEN my cervix is at its highest. However, sometimes it's low, and that's not fun. Unfortunately, my country here is more focused on other things rather than being accommodating to every menstruators who, God forbid, have a low cervix and nothing works for them but pads.
@@pitohui1800 I wasn’t clear, i meant that they have to prove that the risk of TSS is not high within the wear time or cause other issues (this applies to all devices not just menstrual products). I get that it is frustrating and health canada is very slow on a lot of issues. Medicated abortions for example took a lot longer to get approved here and other items like newer iuds are taking longer to get approved, but when the alternative is medical devices getting approved too quickly and people getting injured because of it, erring on the side of caution might be better. There is also an argument that people are hurting while Health Canada is making their decision so there is a balance to be struck.

@@pitohui1800 How many decades did it take for science to agree tobacco smoke is harmful? 🤷 People are using them, but long term effects take time to study. Hopefully soon.

You're providing so much information, education, and content for people worldwide on these topics. I didn't know the Hello disc was not availaible in Canada. I ordered it when i supported your Kickstater. Canada was in the shipping options. I feel lucky !

Im in canada and was super happy when i could get my hands on a saalt soft cup AND the saalt disc. Super happy with both of them! I usually use a lunette cup as its a less fiddley cup but the saalt soft is perfect especially when cramps are bad. Thank you for this video! Super informative
Omg thanks for explaining this. I really thought all the good period disc brands were just rudely ignoring the Canadian market. 😭 But now I see it's much more complicated than that. I think more brands will eventually come but now I know it's not a matter of months but years. I will just go ahead and order the Hello Disc through my friend in the US. And yes, my first cup was DivaCup 🙊 and it really didn't work for me so it put me off cups for years lol. Now I'm determined to find something that works, armed with all the new knowledge I have learned through your wonderful channel. 😊
I'm disappointed that people would be disrespectful and rude to you over our health Canada rules. I appreciate the stringent ness of health Canada but I think they should offer financing help or cuts to products being tested. We want safe and reliable options!!!
I was definitely disappointed when I realized that the hello disc wasn't an option but I understood why. I tried to order the diva disc but it was already sold out lol life's hard sometimes but at least I have my cup
Thank you for this video Kim! I am Canadian and I am frustrated at just how limited menstrual cup/disk selection is. Women in Canada have menstrual cycles to lol! For me, I can't wait until the Hello Disk become available as well as items in your period shop that look like they would absolutely work for me.

I love the Lily Cup Compact. I collapse the bottom up on my low cervix days so for me, it’s an adjustable size. I’m in the UK and we have some brands completely unavailable too.

As an Australian, i thought moving to Canada would open up so much more options being geographically closer to usa...but it's been the opposite?! 😂 i have a super high cervix and the diva cup didn't cut it...i got a juju model 3 shipped from australia (lol), and then eventually my goldilocks was a lumma unique disc shipped through the reship website. both cost around $70 so yeah, pretty big compromise. i tried the lily cup first and it was great, but the stem was just a biiiiit too hard. definitely been a monumentally expensive experiment finding high cervix options in canada...and then i got pregnant 🤷♀️
edit: im surprised you listed the lily cup as firm kim, im super sensitive to firm cups and it was so soft and comfortable that it caved in on itself a lot - the stem however is very thick and hard if it doesnt go high enough.
Hi, I purchased the gray hello disk with the two circle tabs about two weeks ago. Got it in time before my period (today). I have recently started using periods cups to cut down waste of pads and tampons. The previous cup I was using for a half of year was the diva cup. LET ME TELL YOU. The diva cup and the suction it has is very uncomfortable. The pulling I was feeling from pulling it out (properly) was just awful!
The disk is such a beautiful product and I only bought it because of you! My first time using it and it’s soo comfortable! The no suction makes SUCH a difference in using the product. I am in love and THANK YOU very much for promoting such good products!! ❤❤❤❤❤

It's true that us Canadians have high cervixes. The cold weather causes the uterus to retract further into the body. For this reason, some Canadians need to use a different cup in the summer than the winter.

I just got a peesafe cup of amazon Canada for only 24 dollars in the smallest size. It is short enough for my fairly low cervix, though I did get it suctioned to my cervix yesterday which was not fun to remove, and sometimes the stem sticks out a bit. I'm a novice to cups but I'm hoping as I figure out placement it will serve me well.
The quality seems good, it is a fairly soft silicone, and about the size of a Saalt teen cup (sadly also not available to Canadians despite other models being available if you're willing to shell out 30$ Canadian shipping on top of the price.) So the small peesafe cup is probably a good starter for teens, especially if you had your eye on the Saalt teen but couldn't get it, it even comes in a lovely purple.
It still sucks that there's basically nothing in the low cervix range, but I'm so glad the options have increased since I took interest as a teenager in 2012. I was so excited when I was able to get a size 1 diva cup in my local drug store, only to find that it didn't fit and the firmness hurt me when it popped open. I didn't even know cervix height could change, it sure was a wonder I could get a finger properly in but come my period there just wasn't space for tampons. People tried to tell me I just hadn't learned to use tampons yet, but I knew my body, the last time I tried as an adult it still didn't fit, and the cotton felt terrible. I'm so glad I have the information I have now. For the young people out there, keep exploring and trust yourself.
You should totally try out the *Fornix menstrual disc.* It's a Canadian brand that's been approved by health canada but since it's still fairly new to the market not many ppl know about it which is unfortunate since it's actually quite good, at least for me I've been having a great experience. It's got two models, one with a pull tab removal and one with a finger notch removal, but both are the same size, I was able to get myself the tab one and I've been so happy with it, since I couldn't get my hands on the hello disc this has been a nice alternative choice.
I've tried the lily cup compact after years of using the diva cup. Wouldnt recommend as it would collapse inside and make a mess, so I went back to my diva. I've been wanting to try the salt soft for a while now I just need to bite the bullet and order it already! Thanks for the great ressource!!
Kim, I’m in the US. But I’ve been meaning to ask you. What has happened with Femmycycle? My jerk of a “taco terrier” somehow got her paws on mine, and now I can’t even replace my cup. It was very comfortable for me. I’m the owner of a low to low average cervix. I love the bulb shaped cups that are softer. I have been seeing the Hello Low cervix pair. I’m just not sure. I’ve gone to Lumma discs. But for me, sleeping is more comfortable in a cup.
There is also the Viv cup in Canada which has a shorter option, it has a ring at the bottom that makes it really easy to remove. I personally didn't love it because it sometimes would suction to my cervix but it is another Canadian made cup!
I prefer the inside out Diva. I find it far easier to pinch the bottom to remove because it provides a 'shelf' to grip.
Hi! Thank you sooooo muuuuch, your videos had helped me a lot to start using the cup. I have one question: how long can I have the cup outside of my body until have to boil it again? For example, I'd like to shower without it cause I love water on my entire body, but i don't see the point on boiling it again just for 15 minutes of shower.

Thanks for this video! I'm in Canada and just got my period back after my second (and last) baby. I first tried cups almost 2 years ago in between pregnancies. The only readily available cup at drugstores was the Diva so i tried it first but found it too firm and could feel a lot of pressure. I then got the Intimina lily cup through amazon and I like it, but would like to try something else to compare. I do have a higher cervix but still had to cut the stem. The saalt soft is way too expensive with shipping.

I’m in Canada - I bought my first cup, keeper cup, on eBay in like 2008 :p that was literally the only way to get a cup at the time… I’m assuming it was brand new 😂 replaced it with a diva cup but it keeps leaking, and I am looking to try your disc.
I actually saw the flex cup at the pharmacy a few months ago, but it freaked me out with the “hook” and I’m like uuuuh no…

Hey , can you make a video from cups available in india , they don't have much options and it's real confusin, + many brands ( like safe cup have very weird way of sizes) i am 16 and i have a high cervix, i have been using the plup teen cup but with my heavy flow it gets filled in 3 hrs and i wanted to switch to something i didn't had to change that quick and safe Cup's smallest size s is for people below 30 it's a 28 ml cup and on their amazon question box they replied that people my age can wear it.
Waiting on my ziggy cup B with balmy and free gift then I'll be buying lilly cup one lol with extra balmy and lub lol wanted the lily cup compact B buy heard whole said they had issues having it open or fold in them I really wanted to but the up vs more other parts lol

Hey I started using small size menstrual cup. The first month went well. In second month cup started leaking after 5-6 hours but the cup wasn't full. Same thing happened in third month. What to do?

I'd love to use a cup or disc but my cervix is so extremely high and my uterus is backwards so idk if I would be a great candidate for either. My cervix is so high that in order to get a biopsy once my doctor had to use long hemostats while having me push/cough the entire time ugh. Every doctor who's ever checked me has said they are truly shocked I ever got pregnant.

I find the Nixit waaay too big for me and it pops out of place constantly.. even though I technically (knuckle test) don't have a low cervix? I don't know. I've tried it on and off for over a year and it just is not reliable whatsoever for me.
Hey Zomi is a nice alternative, very similar to Nixit but smaller diameter... 52 ml capacity, 65 ml diameter.
We can get intamina stuff to there jist might be a charge lena to I hate the diva cups they never open holes to to small
we can also get the ruby cup, lunette, and bfree in canada. not sure which if any are health canada approved. where do you look to find out.
Health Canada has a directory. When I checked for this video Ruby was not listed. Several brands ship into countries they aren’t approved in and hope for the best. So either Ruby was approved after I checked or they are doing that

I ordered the Diva Disc immediately upon finding it available. I went on the website today to send someone a link and it suddenly isn’t available anywhere on the Canadian site? Not sure what happened but I hope it becomes an option again soon because I love it.
They just sold out, there will be more available when they have them. New disc designs seem to have this happen. Hello disc is often sold out too.

Companies shipping to Canada are not supposed to ship unapproved items across the border from outside the country... they might do it regardless. But they're not supposed to and your product may get inspected and seized by customs agents with no recourse for you.

I have a question regarding the Lily Cup. On their website it says it last up to 8 hours but their Amazon page and your page says 12 hours. I wanna make sure that it can be worn for 12 hours because the time is the whole point of it.
I think it has to do with the EU legislations. Since Intimina is Swedish, I think they're legally obliged to put it, although in reality you can wear it safely for up to 12 hours.
I have saalt in small and regular.... venus cups small large .... flex cup slim ...... diva cup 2 witch I can't get to open ever lol and I have the life brand to lol tucked away I gave up on those two lol got another large pink cup ........ then lilly cups classic a and b ziggy cup 2 a lol waiting on ziggy cup 2 B to come then buying the lilly cup 1 lol 😆 then got diva disc nixit cup lol then other disc not brands I canada lol 😆 I went a little nuts lol 😆 😜
