The Best and Worst Cups I Tried in 2022

  • I tried TEN period products in 2022 but which was the best and which was the worst? To be totally honest there wasn't a true loser in the bunch if I'm judging them by how they worked for me. Even the "worst" cup on my list worked pretty well and didn't leak, it was the length that caused my issues. This list was a total surprise to me with the exception of the top product of the year. Some of my favorite brands ended up low on the list while brands I'm not exactly a cheerleader for were closer to the top. This list is JUST for fun and while I did review my own source material it's not a scientific list ranked to perfection. One product ranked pretty low this year was a product that used to work better for me in previous years so it's another case of showcasing how bodies can change!
    Also, this video started with 56 minutes of footage. I trimmed to 40 minutes and thought it was going to be the longest video i ever posted. Then I edited over and over again, cut out the times I said things again and again because I repeat myself, removed some things that just weren't adding much value, and ended up coming in at a respectable 23 minutes but didn't think to change the opener because it was not, in fact, the longest video ever after all. If you don't want to watch the full video I shared clips here on CZcams shorts of my top 5 with short punchy recaps and those don't contain any real period footage.
    Thank you CZcams for an amazing 2022! This platform has been my fastest growing of the year and I can't thank you enough for subscribing and supporting Period Nirvana and Period.Shop.

      @beardiemom Před 6 měsíci +2

      Not just that, difficulty to clean can also mean that you think you washed it properly but maybe missed a bit that you reinsert with the disk or cup. That just feels like a recipe for bacterial vaginosis, a yeast infection or worse.

    This year, I started with the Diva Cup and it was frustrating and painful. My second try, after some quiz-taking and seeing what was available immediately (the need was NOW), I moved to the Flex Cup, and was quite surprised! It works well for me, even when I go swimming. And what are these things in the box? Discs? Well, let’s give those a try… wow! So, in another moment of need and after another quiz, I got a Saalt reusable disc. It’s working great for me! • @PrairieEss
    @PrairieEss Před rokem +18

    Kim, have you ever tried removing a disc by hooking your finger up and over the rim (ie. your finger ends up inside the disc)? You do have to twist your wrist a bit to achieve. This is how I remove my Lumma disc. The string was so uncomfortable so I cut it off, and I found it hard to try and hook under the rim or to try and pinch it to remove. It is a bit more messy, but I found it so much easier. Maybe a useful technique for others as well?

    • @PeriodNirvana
      @PeriodNirvana  Před rokem +15

      that doesn't work for me because of the position of my pubic bone and how prominent it is, I have to pull downward from underneath. It's a good strategy for others if they struggle but that will definitely create more mess versus pulling from below the disc.

    • @samanthak4583
      @samanthak4583 Před rokem +1

      I have to get my thumb over the rim of my Saalt Disc as well to remove every month! I haven't used my Lumma Disc extensively, but the few times I tried it the string was uncomfortable for me too (even though it's so convenient 😞.)
      Relying on just the notch hasn't worked in my experience because my pubic bone area is kinda fleshy; it just won't let the disc out unless I firmly grab it out, lol! I'm right there with you @PrairieEss ☺️

      I had to do that with my Saalt disc only because it had rotated after sex and it was the ONLY way I could remove it. It was difficult and annoying. Would much rather want something to grab, but I think the string on the lumma disk would be annoying too.

    I tried a disk on my last cycle, and it worked well for me during the day while I was awake, but when I slept it would both flip upside down and rotate. Since it was my first disk I don't know why it flipped over, is it too small or too soft maybe? I also found that I must have a high cervix moreso than I thought because once it was rotated I couldn't use the loop to pull it out, and I also couldn't reach it with my thumb and finger to get a good grip on it since my thumb is too short. I could only reach it with my first and middle fingers and pull it in a scissor motion with much effort and many tries. I have trouble with lack of strength and inflammation in my hands so my whole hand and wrist were sore for the rest of the day, and I was too scared to try it again after that. I wanted to use a disk because I was scared of not being able to break the seal on a cup and pull it out with my hand issues, but I found out about the Flex cup so I'm planning to try that on my next cycle. I would still love to know if there might be another disk I could try out too, but I'm just not sure what direction to take since I don't know what caused the failure.

      @@Harlow_Khmer Period Nirvana also has a quiz for you to take to find a cup that works for you. It gives you the top 3 recommendations. If you get nothing else out of it, you'll be taught to measure your cervix, and base your recommendations from there.
      But honestly, the best way to know what works for you is to go out and try it. Also to reviews that complain about size, a couple things could be happening: they have an exceptionally small fornix or low cervix, or they may prefer a more snug fit around their cervix. So that's something to keep in mind.

    I’ve used Flex disc disposable, Lumma (M & S) discs, Cora regular, and Diva disc.
    Flex is just a tad too large for me. Leaks and doesn’t stay tucked.
    Lumma medium worked ok, but I’m not a huge fan of autodumping. Lumma small was too small and nearly suctioned itself onto my cervix. That was a very difficult removal 😂🤷🏻‍♀️
    Cora doesn’t work for me at all. Leaks and gives me bladder pressure. I soooo wanted to like it cuz the material is so soft and nice. But tried it during 3 cycles and just can’t get it to work. It’s my least favorite of all the discs I’ve had
    Diva is my winner. The oval shape actually fits me really well. The autodump prevention is nice. Removal is a breeze. And it only leaks when it gets full. I loved it so much, I ordered a second one during their Black Friday sale! I like to have 2 discs so that I always have a clean one ready to go.
    I would have tried Hello, but given it’s the same size as the flex, I knew it would likely be too big. Would love to see a medium size like 65mm in diameter. Though I don’t think I’ll need to demo any more discs (unless you want to send me a free product for an honest review. Lol).
    I used cups off and on for years, but they give me bladder pressure, so I didn’t always feel like dealing with that. But after giving birth in 2021, tampons have become horribly painful to use. So I decided to experiment with discs. So happy to see there were so many options in discs now (there weren’t when I was trying cups 6 years ago).
    Your videos were so so helpful for me in picking what discs I did end up trying. Really appreciate your honest reviews. I recommend your channel and website often 💖

      @@Harlow_Khmer I don't know about hers, but I was using a notched disc. The first time I went to pull it out, it had twisted around. I reached two fingers in there to pinch the bottom of it and pull it out. Tedious, but doable (helped that I was wearing gloves). I cleaned it and put it back, making sure it was in there with the notch facing correctly. I wish I hadn't. I can get my finger in the notch but it's so high up that I can't grab the lip and pull it out. And because of how the notch is designed, I can't get a hold of the bottom now either. It's just... up there. Another video says that it's probably sitting high because I was lying down. I need to move around for thirty minutes to see if gravity will bring it down. I'm very worried because I had already been up twenty minutes prior to trying. I love the disc, but I don't recommend the notched. This is horrible. Get one with the loops on it if you buy one. That's the one I will be trying next.

    • @PeriodNirvana
      @PeriodNirvana  Před rokem +3

      It sounds like you have a sky high cervix. I don't know which brand you're using but in your current situation try to squat in your tub or shower. This gets the cup lower. If you can't reach while squatting try pushing gently again but don't strain. If the cup is too well suctioned pushing may not help get it lower. Again - not sure which brand you have but you can reach out to customer support for more advice. Don't panic - being tense makes things worse. You want relaxed muscles. You could even try taking a bath to relax. In some cases letting the cup get more full can help it move farther down but you don't want to have it in much longer than the 12 hour max.

      Oh man! No issues with the coughing, and this disc thing is an absolute game changer. It's honestly made being sick far more tolerable (and I _am_ feeling a bit better, thank you 😊).
      What I'm using right now is definitely super firm; I ordered a little pack of the Flex disposables just to see if discs would be right for me. I _love_ it. Can't believe it took me this long to try something like this (I'm in my 30s). I plan on buying the *Hello* now that I know I'm going to stick with the disc; everything about that design seems like it will be perfect for me.
      I know this comment is super long already but I also wanted to just say thank you _so_ much for everything you do. I've watched a ton of your videos and if it hadn't been for this channel, I wouldn't have even _considered_ changing my period products. It never would have crossed my mind, even though I was never really _happy_ with tampons in the first place. I had heard of cups in the past but always thought the idea seemed weird, so I never looked further into it (never heard of discs until now).
      But somehow I ended up on your channel, got sucked into a menstruation rabbit hole, and my life has now permanently changed for the better. 😁 So thank you ❤️

    Sorry i have questions regarding the use of a menstrual disc and idk who to ask so if you, or any other watcher of this channel, can answer me, it would help me so much.
    I watched all your videos as I was looking for a cheaper and environmentally friendly alternative to tampons, so i decided to buy a menstrual disc.
    I took your website’s test when choosing the disc and used your tutorials when inserting it, but i have only one issue, and i don’t see anybody talking ab it so idk what to do
    So I bought the lumma disc size S, & i inserted it correctly, because i checked and i tucked it properly behind the pubic bone, my cervix is inside it (i checked), i touched all the borders and its in place, the problem is the round part/“cup” part thats underneath the rim/border, it doesn’t open properly in the round shape, its like folded in itself a bit. This is my third change during this period, each time i tried with my finger to get it to open more, but it’s like when i create the eight shape during insertion, the cup part folds itself towards the inside following the eight shape i fold it in, and when i have put it in, it doesn’t expand/unfolds itself properly because the walls of the vagina from underneath kinda keep that space not “deep” enough and push it in itself. The only part that unfolds & permits the blood to be contained, is the part that has the vaginal canal below so there is no vaginal wall stopping it.
    I thought, as the blood would pour in, the weight of the blood would help the disc take the same shape it has when its outside the vagina, and therefore permit the full capacity of it, but it didn’t and instead the blood started getting out when the capacity of the “punched-in” (sorry idk in what way to describe it) shape was finished. I think it didnt even reach 1/3 of the capacity it’s supposed to have.
    Even from watching the video tutorials, it seems as if the vagina walls would shape themselves around the form of the disc, instead in my case it seems as if the walls and the insertion process are shaping the disc.
    So… anybody has any tips? Did i make a mistake in inserting it? Do i have the wrong size/disc and maybe another size, brand or type of disc would have fit me better?
    Also to give further context. I am a virgin, 21 years old, first time menstrual disc user and never used a menstrual cup, usually i use tampons, medium height cervix and i don’t have a tilted cervix. My flow is considered medium or light.
    The diameter/circumference of the lumma disc S seems to fit me as I comfortably tucked it behind the pubic bone and behind the cervix, the rim itself adhered well to the vagina walls, after each use i had to untuck the disc from behind the pubic bone so i dont think the issue was it slipped in my vaginal canal.
    Also i have been working in a standing position during the use, so it cannot be possible that the spill was caused by auto-dumping happening.
    It is also not a small spill, i had the disc in for 10 hours (the capacity is supposed to be 12 hours) & i had put a pad for safety reasons and the pad ended up full, so that’s a lot of blood that wasn’t contained. The disc wasnt even 1/5 full due to the folds.
    And my flow is not heavy, I usually change a tampon/pad every 8-10 hours during my heaviest day.
    I’m so confused if this is normal, and for discs, capacity-wise, i have to take into consideration the anatomy and depth of the upper part of the vagina where the disc sits…. or if instead the disc is supposed to unfold into its proper form…. somebody help plsss idk anybody irl who uses a disc so i cannot ask anybody around me! & sorry for the massive TMIs and detailed descriptions

      It's an evolving response and I've warmed more to them in the last year tbh. Initially when they launched their marketing was really negative against reusable period products before they had their own. As a reusable period products advocate I didn't love that... I have talked about that in the past and since I have, felt I should mention that evolving attitude in this video at least. They do make 2 good reusable period product options and I also added those to my store this year. Things change and companies/people change but it's my honest reaction to that brand. I can still say the products themselves are well designed and work for lots of people!

      @@PeriodNirvana Thanks for explaining. Now I understand. Their disposable discs were really the opposite of the reusable products movement. I'm happy they developed reusable options. I now use the Flex reusable disc and I am sooo happy. It even works better than the Lumma disc high. Allows a longer wear time for me until I need to auto-dump on my heavy days. I would have tried the hello, but was worried that the loop would be annoying for me (had to cut off the string of the Lumma disc as it poked me) AND it was so much more expensive with shipping to Austria (EU). Flex was already expensive with shipping costs and customs fees. Hello disc was even more expensive. Would love to have discs like the Hello and Flex available within Europe!!!

I have some factual information about risks of using a cup with an IUD on this page: www.periodnirvana.com/iud It can be done if you're comfortable with the concept and understand there could be risks. If you prefer something with lower risk menstrual discs are similar to cups but don't have suction. I know this is an old comment but maybe you will see it 😊 Like I feel like it’s a great idea in theory but I also feel like I’d feel like I’d be wearing a diaper 😂😂 maybe they’d be good to use in conjunction with a tampon/disc/cup but you could just use regular panties with a pad for extra protection. But wearing anything with the period panties kinda defeats the purpose, no?

    • @beardiemom
      @beardiemom Před 6 měsíci

      Period panties have their pros and cons. The biggest con, imo, is that they aren't as durable as cups, discs or even reusable pads and need to be replaced within two-ish years, while you also pay *way* more for a set of panties than you would for a cup or disc that can last you up to 10 years, since you need to buy enough to last you through your period. Also, every pair I found says to cold-wash them, because otherwise the fabric loses its elasticity, so you definitely can't boil to sanitize them like you can other reusable products.
