I lost pine trees back in 1996 to hurricane Fran. after I cut the trees down I hired a man to come out with his portable Woodmizer to make lumber. He was able to look at a log and determine the number of 2X12s, 2X10s and so forth before he made the first cut. worked out great, I ended up with cheap lumber for a barn project. The Woodmizer is a great product. I'm glad to see you going from firewood to making lumber. Cherry has the hardness to finish up really nice. have fun you two.

I hope you are a man of faith and thank God every day for your blessings. Most of all your family! You have a gas well money maker and now after watching this you have a second gold mine. That wood is absolutely beautiful! That and the fact that you have a plethora of it there is a lot of money in the foreseeable pipeline. Even if you had to buy every piece of equipment you have from the file to sharpen the saw all the way to the end including the tractors, the saw logs and firewood would pay for it all in no time! That board you cut in a 3/4" thick piece is probably more than $10 a lf! Keep it up and never take anything for granted especially your family.

Okay Melissa, it's lets make a deal time... since you help Mike so much with his projects and you let him buy his toys, I suggest the following... take any income produced from the sawmill and split it, half goes to pay for the mill and half goes into a pool fund... sounds fair to me. Great start with the mill... great videos guys!

I was thinking you could run those first two slabs through a table saw and knock off the sapwood and then plane them down good then you could join them and you would double the width of your slab. The top of one is going to match the bottom of the other so you could go that route OR you could mix match them to see which is more interesting.Cherry is beautiful wood!I envy you for the resources you seem to have in abundance and all the wonderful toys you have!Anyway, love your videos, guys and keep them coming...

    To The Tree Huggers:
I am part of the NY Forest Owners Association. I own 278 acres in the southern Adirondacks. (I know, I have said it a million times! lol). 2 points about tree felling:
1/ My property is about 240 acres of forest. I got to know the man who grew up on the property as a kid. He is 84 today. When he brought pictures from "the farm" during his heyday, I was absolutely amazed that there wasn't a tree on it! It was ALL farmland (although, as everyone soon came to find, not very good farmland). Fast forward to today and it is almost all huge Maple, Oak, Evergreen of all sorts, Aspen, Birch, Beech(those damn Beech! lol) etc. Point? Trees grow back!
2/ This is this month's newsletter from the association: Interesting article on the front page, reprinted from a 90's article. It goes into how people (not just tree huggers but everyday folks) think about tree felling today. www.nyfoa.org/application/files/8715/6460/9845/SAC_Summer_2019_Newsletter.pdf
And I won't get into why my forest is growing old , because new growth is eaten away by the over abundance of deer on my property, and why they need to be culled. A different day/article for the "deer huggers". (and I don't hunt anything but Upland Game....of which the grouse population is down 90%!!!!! because of the same no new growth problem). Hope this helps Mike!

Beautiful mill Mike. Wont mention the one that I bought 18 years ago but the old girl still works. Ended up putting the frame onto a 4 inch slab of concrete. Mine is pure mechanical which I love-----get used to sharpening those blades----they dull fast on dirty wood. I sure wood put all that electronics under cover , but that's me. Good luck and learning---there is a curve but Im sure you will master it

Ahhh...I can smell that wood ! What a great piece of wood came out of that log. Cherry is beautiful. That I can see something like a cabinet or fireplace mantel or even a piece of furniture.
I was once told, no rain is going to hurt a working man. But for me, I liable melt because I've heard this once from my half. Ah you're sweet. I don't know about that. Looking in a mirror I think more sour. Oh well it is what it is. Anyway, good to see you do what you do and as I always said before, outdoors is the place to be.

A little tip, when the logs get to big and heavy to turn with the cant lever, get yourself a chain fall and suspend it from your tractor over the log. Wrap it around the bottom of the log and choke it back to the chain down lower so when you come up with the chain fall it will spin the log for you. That’s what I had to do before I fabricated all the log handling functions to hydraulic operations.

Exciting times around the Morgan ranch for sure! Your cherries are humongous Mike, very fortunate to find these on your property. As time marches on, cutting different species of trees, you will come to love the various grain patterns each tree offers. Poplars, ( aspen family ) as an example, being the least popular of most hardwoods in my area at least, produce some gorgeous grains with a hint of green running through them. They make for excellent wall boards or floor boards for that matter. I have some 2" planks made from poplar & I will be burning it in the stove come winter too.
Birch is another beautiful wood. If your'e real lucky, you'll find some maple with natural defects that can command some solid prices too. I recently blocked up a 20" beech above my pond area that snapped off at it's base from a wind shear ever last Oct. Food for the stove...

Now that you have the sawmill, what are your plans for it?

    Custom saw for other folks?
    Set up a kiln?
    Plane and sell finished lumber?
    Get into woodworking?

I've seen 8" plaster spreaders used to scrape off the top - in long sweeps. Wide blade. Brush works with more work.

Mike & Molissa very nice wood slabs, would make a nice bar top or table, with just clear coat.
Mike you could hang a feed bag to catch saw dust to use for other things if you like, stay safe!

I do a lot of tree work and can attest to that! Never straight enough for boards, mostly all firewood lol
