What are your favorite epic fantasy series?? Also to clarify, the reason I include Realm of the Elderlings and Malazan despite not having finished all of them is because I feel like I have read far enough into those series where I can now recommend them as I feel like the journey is already worth it.
My favorite is "Lord of the Mysteries". It's a gigantic web novel. It has an amazing power system, world building, and characters. just give it a try, and u will not regret reading it.
Honorable mentions: The Bound and the Broken by Ryan Cahill, The Dragonlance Chronicles by Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman, The Forgotten Realms Books, Legend of Drizzt by R.A. Salvatore, The Belgariad By David Eddings
10 - The Powder Mage by Brian McClellan
9 - The Faithful and the Fallen by John Gwynn
8 - Earthsea by Ursula K Le Guin
7 - The Realm of the Elderlings by Robin Hobb
6- Memory Sorrow and Thorn by Tad Williams
5- A Song of Ice and Fire by George RR Martin
4 - The Stormlight Archive by Branden Sanderson
3- The Wheel of Time by Robert Jordan
2- Malazan Book of the Fallen - Steven Erikson
1- The Lord of the Rings - Tolkien
Bonus - The Nine Princes of Amber by Roger Zelanzny
Sanderson before Martin is absolutely criminal.
I know Terry Pratchett is not epic fantasy, but also he is epic fantasy because Discworld is everything.
Wars of Light and Shadow by Janny Wurts is for you.
@@Mgranadosvfact.
Lmao why doesn't he just cal it a top 15 at this point
A book that doubles as a weapon, all you could ever need! 😌
I have a Qixote edition on big letters who weigths like 5 kgs.
Is the perfect weapon, doesn’t gets suspicion, and u can put it in its place after use it again, noone will suspect.
@@adamnesicoPerfect 😌
I told my brother that if i die before the Stormlight series is finished, he has to visit my grave to tell me what happens.
Thank you. I am 17 but, I will have to do it for Doors of Stone...

I appreciate all the hard work you put into your videos. Your love of the genre comes through. Thanks.
I'm happy to hear that, thanks for watching! :)
At number five when he said "It deserves a spot even tho it isnt finished yet".. I think we all thought of the same series coming:D
I thought the Name of the wind would be there 😢
@@niralipb4739 Me too, but he can't name it in every single video haha
@@niralipb4739 I would say it doesn't count as a series with only two novels and with A wise man's fear being so mid.
@@Mgranadosvwise man's fear was even better wym
@@y.s.915 True that!!
Some series that should have a place, but seem to be lost to time immediately come to mind. Anne McCaffrey's Dragonriders of Pern, Roger Zelansky's Amber series (although having great characters, magic system and story, he fails to provide a satisfying ending in book 10) and Terry Brooks' Shannara series starting with Word and Void which was superb. It's odd how much hate Brooks gets for being similar to LOTR mainly because he was the first of many to do so, but like Wheel of time, the series finds it's own way over 30 books and Word and Void provides a path back to the apocalyptic origin of how the world of Shannara came to be (although the 90's being the begining of the end makes it slightly dated). -EDIT I STOPPED AT #1 AND DIDN'T SEE YOUR COMMENT ON AMBER
I recently replied to another person who had their "Top 10" fantasy, but forgot those that you mentioned, but I forgot to include Terry Brooks. Shannara was great ... thanks for the memory jog. Commenter mentioned Belgariad, but forgot to mention the follow-up series Mallorean in ref to Eddings. And of course, Feist's 27 books that follow to the Riftwar Trilogy. A lot of these new people commenting on "the best" seem to only focus on new fantasy authors, or skim older authors. Personally, I would be hard pressed to come up with a top ten with over 70 years of fantasy work (starting with Tolkien) by so many great authors. If I made a video like this, I would title it something like, "The best top 10 Fantasy that I've read recently". Of course, all of this, like the current commentator, is my own opinion. Have a great day!
your videos always inspire me to make time for more fantasy reading! Appreciate you putting together a bunch of great options! For someone that doesn't have a ton of time to sift through everything it's super super helpful :)
Really happy to hear that, thanks for watching! :)
I love your b-roll and my students love your videos as well. Great work, Jay! I wish I was as great at editing as you.
I stayed for the honorable mention at the end, of course! 😋 I always look forward to seeing what kind of fantasy books you recommend and your storytelling- & visual style really enhances the experience. 😃💙📚👍 And I'm *really* looking forward to Stormlight 5 (even though I still need to finish the first 4 😂)! I am, however, finally reading through one of you top favorites, as I've mentioned on my community tab. 😋 Have a good one! 💙📚
I appreciate so much the effort you put in your videos Jay! They are amazing! Thank you so much!
Have you read Raymond E Feist’s epic Riftwar Saga? I think it would be up your lane starting with boyhood friendship, amazing worldbuilding (multiple worlds), coming of age, elven & dwarf races etc, magic, heroism and delightful revelations. I am still getting through this catalogue of stories but I would mention the first Riftwar saga trilogy & the Empire Trilogy are *chefs kiss*.
I love that you mentioned the Powder Mage books. They are amazing and don't get mentioned enough I feel. Love the videos
I’m so excited you started to read The Bound and The Broken!
Me too! Enjoying it a lot so far and can't wait to get further into it!
It’s so nice to the The Belgariad mentioned because it deserves WAY more praise than it get. All of Eddings does really. It feels like older fantasy gets judged for having tropes everyone is tired of, when they’re the books that made them so popular. Same with Shannara, or Melanie Rawn or so many others. They get ignored for being “trope-y” when they are the books that made it popular for more modern authors to copy. But I love fantasy tropes like the chosen one, or epic quests, so I don’t think they’re overdone. Lol.
Powder Mage is SOOOO good! It made me love Flintlock fantasy. I still need to read John Gwynne. I love finding books that feel like classic fantasy.
Great video, and now my TRL has gotten even bigger! I just finished the Cradle Series by Will Wight (per your recommendation on another video) and was hoping it would have made this list! Other than not loving how the books wrapped up, I thought it was a perfect series that just... felt really good to read and always put me in a good mood! I keep trying to force my friends to read it so I have someone to talk to about it!
Great to see The Belgariad get some love! Was just talking about it with my husband 2 days ago. There is another series, The Malloreon, that is a continuation. I read The Belgariad in high school then stumbled on the beginning of the Mallorean at a military book store while stationed in Korea. I’d say I’ve reread both series about every 5 years since then. I’ve read some or all of the series on your list. Another fantastic older series is Dragonriders of Pern by Anne McCaffrey.
No one ever mentions David Eddings. I read the Bellgriad in high school and it is still one of my favorites and I'm 36 now.
Eddings is my go to comfort author. He just has such great characters and lore. Have you read The Elenium and The Tamuli? Or The Redemption of Althalus?
I appreciate the extra time spent on the honorable mentions, I was enjoying hearing the details and history of the books that I didn't realize the list hadn't officially started yet haha
Glad the honorable mentions didn't seem like too much haha, thanks for watching!
SO AWESOME TO SEE THE FAITHFUL AND THE FALLEN ON HERE!!!!
Also love A Song of Ice and Fire, Powder Mage, Realm of the Elderlings and of course, LotR
Love this video! I’m about 75% done with Ruin; the Faithful and the Fallen has been hitting all the right notes and I’m loving it!
Wonderful to see Faithful and the Fallen on this list! So happy you enjoyed them. Truth and courage!
Ed
The Riftwar Saga by Raymond E. Feist deserves a mention if not a place on the list
Gets repetitive after a very short while. And bad in female characters (the empire part is written by… Janny Wurts in part… and her series is top tier Wars of Light and Shadow.. )
Thanks for the list! Dragonlance, the Drizzt Saga and the Belgariad intoduced me to Fantasy written in English during high school after having read the Hobbit and LOTR in their French translation. Contributed mightily in learning English as a second language and I haven’t stop learning since! Many of your recommendations are sitting on my shelves waiting to be read for years now… But work and kids do suck leisure time. I hope I can start some of those series soon. The WOT series remains my best ever for now (3 times read and 2 times listened to). So many series to read so little time to read. Don’t know if I will start the Cosmere, a Song of Ice and Fire, First Law books or Malazan. I have them all (and more), but which should I start first?
awesome list Jay!
Thanks!
The Belgariad is the epic that got me hooked on the genre. Thanks for the love!
Finally someone mentions Dragonlance.
Yes. Weis and Hickman got me into fantasy when I was 14 year old or so. I just borrowed the first book of the Death gate cycle from the library! I just planned to reread that....
I just started reading Malazen and yes I was super intimidated by it but also I already see this is something I am going to love! So thank you to all the fantasy creators who keep recommending it!
Just started rereading the series. Loved the first time through but it was very difficult at times. Going back through with the knowledge of how the world actually works has been an incredible pleasure so far.
I always get surprised when Eragon doesn't get mentioned on these lists. It was my gateway book into fantasy and had such a massive impact on me as a child. Was anyone else absolutely obsessed with Eragon? Or did it just appeal to me?
Same for me, I reread it so many times as a kid 😅
Same, but I honestly don't think Paolini's writing comes close to any of these. Inheritance was definitely a good story, but not anywhere near as grand in scope as most in this list. Probably would have pleased a lot of us to see him as an honorable mention though.
@@justinbaker988 Absolutely! It's not the greatest written and has so many overused tropes. But it was my way into fantasy so it'll always have a place in my heart!:)
Oh my God yes! Even though I began this series only a few years ago, but I was hooked the moment I began! I love how detailed the world is! And Murtagh... the most recent one... MY GUNTERA'S MIGHT WHAT BEAUTY IT WAS!!
Very solid lineup!
So glad to see Eddings get mentioned - such a formative fantasy arc for those of a certain age
I feel betrayed by the Eddingses. Research the controversy. Even without that, the writing hasn't aged well.
I love the Legend of Drizzt series and it’s what got me in to reading bc it was like Skyrim!
Also, that would be a cool idea! Make a video where you recommend books based off certain video games, shows, movies, etc. That would be cool! I love your content!
Music I found to be perfect for reading fantasy is Bliss by Theresa Griffith. In a happy accident, I was listening to it while reading "The Time Traveler's Wife." The flute music has a haunting sound that emphasized the bittersweet nature of the story. Fit well with "Wheel of Time" and "Mistborn."
I'd love to see you do a review or tackle on the dark tower if you haven't read it already. It's a series I finally finished last year, and it's become one of my favorite series next to something like a stormlight or anything by sanderson. And yeah, I'm extremely hyped for wind and truth.
Omgosh thank you so much for picking Realm of the Elderlings (Mad Ship is the best!!) My favorite! Also thank you for mentioning the Belgariad. Another favorite of mine 😊
I like that you included Memory, Sorrow and Thorn. That series has become under appreciated. It’s a great story that sticks the landing. Also, it’s clearly a huge influence for George RR Martin’s ASOIAF, and I also don’t think it gets the credit it deserves as being one of the most influential fantasy series ever.
Yes! It truly does not get the credit it deserves, and I really think more readers should know about it. Such a great series, and like you said, it sticks the landing
I see why a lot of people rag on it now, as it's tropey and it can be very slow. But seriously, the worldbuilding in the first book grabs you. I started it and didn't leave it for a second.
The sequel is great too! Thirthy years later it tells the story of Simon, who is an older king now. I'm waiting for the fourth book, but Williams normally delivers on time, not like some of his collegues ;)...
His Otherland series is great too.
The world of the Wheel of Time is so vivid to me. Even just hearing the words Altara, Seanchan, Tarabon, etc. I can picture those locations. I know what the climate is like, how the people dress, how they speek, what their culture's are. Robert Jordan can be rightly accused of over describing things, but if his intent was to burn his world into my mind and let me truly imagine it, he succeeded in his goal.
Wheel by far has the most alive fantasy world I've ever read
The Belgariad! I stalked bookstores for the next one and I still have all of them! The Truth Seeker series by Terry Goodkind is fantastic too.
One of my favorite series right now and maybe of all time is “sons of the black sword series”
Ashok is my spirit animal
first law?
A note on Tad Williams…I’ve been reading his Shadowmarch series (and really enjoying it!) but the entire first book of that series is 650 pages of nothing more than set-up! 🤪 At the end, you can see how he moved all his characters into position for the action to start, so skillfully, but it’s a series that takes perseverance to get to the meat, for sure. Read Tad Williams for the sheer enjoyment of his prose, not to get to the end.
Thanks for mentioning Nine Princes in Amber by Roger Zelazny! That’s my favourite fantasy series ever, and it seemed like I was the only one who read it. It’s so good and almost nobody talks about it.
I'll be interested in seeing if your opinion on Stormlight goes up or down this December when the first era/arc concludes.
I'm on book six of Malazan and I am enjoying it a lot. So I totally agree on putting it that high on your list!
You made me want to read The Dragonbone Chair.
Awesome!!! If you do read it I hope you enjoy!
I would add The First Law World,KKC and Drenai Saga
Love love love First Law- but maybe considered more Grimdark than Epic.
@@SuperCoop13 Ah, true. FORGOT but Asoiaf is grimdark aswel as far as I know. 🤣
It's incredible that David Gemmell is largely unknown these days. Before he died his books were best sellers and himself one of the top fantasy writers.
@@mpgnz73 He's really good but John Gwynne surpassed him imho ! :D
When you said that Wheel of time drags 'a little bit' I chuckled.
Lol 😂
I had to skip read the Perrin "the only thing that matters to me is Faile". Jesus wept that got on my nerves especially when she wasn’t a particular ice character
I love a lot of these series! ❤
Glad to hear it!! 😁📚
Agree so much with this list! I haven’t read powder mage, but LOTR is my fave fantasy series and I reread Silmarillion, Hobbit and LOTR every year.
OK. I stayed at the end for the bonus honorable mention lol! Also, I just gifted myself a bookcase that I'm wondering if it will hold all of Brandon Sanderson's books without collapsing!
Thought you could sneak RuneScape music in the video and we wouldn't notice... But I did.
What was the duel scene that was your favorite from The Faithful and The Fallen? I just finished the series yesterday and agree it’s an instant top ten!
27:00 the Eye of the World was also split into 2 half-books and sold that way to younger readers, if someone only read the 1st half of the 1st book, then they could be forgiven thinking it a copy of Fellowship of the Ring.
then again, finding all the references in the series is part of the fun: be it as obvious as The Sword in the Stone (of Tear), or more subtle, like ref's to gilgamesh and beowulf...
The Wheel of Time is absolutely amazing. I think I have never read something that enabled me to envision a whole new world in such detail.
Nice to see Tad Williams Dragonbone chair trilogy. on the list. So many great authors like, Martin, Roffus, Hobb etc. all were inspired by Williams and is an example of a really solid series with a good ending. Sure there is a sequel series but if you don’t want to read it, Green Angel Tower is a satisfying conclusion.
Yay! Loved to see The Bound and The Broken ❤
Can't wait to read more of that series!
What’s your opinion on The Echoes Saga by Phillip Quaintrell? As a character driven fantasy epic with dragons, an interesting magic system, and wonderful arcs, I feel it would 100% be in your wheelhouse
Heck Yes, I loved that series!
The first volume of the elric saga arrived a week ago, Im reading it and I'm loving it. It's my first ever novel.
I'm glad to see earthsea, it is so great!
Unfortunately, I really struggled with Sandersons writing style, I read the final empire, I enjoyed his story, but I didn't enjoy the reading itself. After I finish it, I read Morrisses The house of the wolfings and on my, the writing was so beautiful.
I had intended to finish the Mistborn trilogy, but after reading Morris I really couldn't go back to Sanderson, which is unfortunate.
And I am very happy, that the silmarillion is included on number one, it is my favourite book of all time :)
First off, love the RuneScape music at the beginning and end. One of my favorites and recommend is The Sword of Truth, by Terry Goodkind. Very great series. And JRR Tolkien definitely deserves number one spot.
For the underrated list, First Law (and specifically Age of Madness) hassss to be mentioned :D
also I'm reading Malazan atm so it was cool seeing it so high :D
Hi great…video!! 📽️🎥
Thanks for watching Safina!! 😁
As an outsider: only reason I haven't touched epic fantasy is that I haven't found one that is a stand alone. I want to enjoy a book without having to commit to a series focused on dominating a full book shelf.
Recommend sword of Kaigen
I would recommend Warbreaker by Brandon Sanderson. It is a standalone and has great characters, worldbuilding and a interesting magic system.
Read warbreaker by Brandon Sanderson
If you are willing to try a hard read, you could give the silmarillion a go. If you watch The silmarillion synopsis series on the tolkien lore series, it isn't so hard to read.
While it does kind of deserve its reputation for being hard, it is incredibly epic, and with less than 500 Pages it is reasonably short.
And it adds so much to Lord of the Rings, with which you are probably familiar.
And, well, Lord of the rings would also be a great read.
Between Two Fires by Christopher Buehlman
The Maleficent Seven by Cameron Johnston
Norylska Groans by Michael Fletcher.
When are you going to do a part 2 of the wise man’s fear review??
There was a Jungian element in Ursula K. Le Guin's Earth Sea trilogy, e.g. the idea of the Shadow.
Pls show ur book shelf 😁
I would love to hear his opinion on the Sword of Truth series
Hey Jay, I just wanted to let you know that their is now a sequel trilogy to the Powder Mage trilogy. Just in case you want to read it.
I love ALL the Dragonlance Chronicles and Forgotten realms books !
Awesome!!! I want to get back into those series and read some of the ones I missed out on!
I wonder how you feel about Terry Brooks' Sword of Shannara series.
There are two additonal series of books in the Malazan world by author Ian Esslemont who is a co creator of the world.
I’m on the third book of The Bound and The Broken!! It’s such a great read
Michael moorecock’s Elric saga
It's a very important one but it hasn't aged well and some of the books are SO bad. The Fortress of the Pearl's whole middle section is awful.
This channel makes me more interested in reading .
Mission complete! Haha, I'm happy to hear that!
I am so excited for book 5!!!!!!!!!!
Ahhhh SO hyped!!!
Two series that I have recently read that I really enjoyed.
The Demon Cycle by Peter V. Brett
The Riyria Revelations by Michael J. Sullivan
I would also really recomend Gentleman Bastard by Scott Lynch
Not sure if they classify as Epic fantasy thought, but good reads!
I'd advocate for Michelle West The Sun Sword and/or THe House War series, both set in the same universe. An older if controversial option Thomas Covenant Unbeliever by Stephen Donaldson.
RA Salvatore was the path to getting boys to read for fun for my three sons and thousands of others. Much like Potter does for kids these days. Even as a grandpa I still love them.
Pausing to add to my Goodreads "Want to Read' shelf after almost every series listed is a workout. LoL
The main comparison between Lord of the Rings & The Wheel of Time is they both could have benefited from an editor in certain spots but, they are tremendous works of fantasy.
Agreed! RA Salvatore is a great gateway drug to fantasy, and are still very enjoyable even as an adult. Eventually when I have kids I will definitely be introducing them to Drizzt when they get to around middle-school age. And I agree about Lord of the Rings and the Wheel of Time, both are absolutely legendary series that could have used a bit more editing here and there
What do you think about that Witcher books I love the game so I decided to buy the books
Faithful and the Fallen is a top series of all time. So amazing.
No, i don't disagree lol - Wot should be number 1 is my only disagreement haha.
The RuneScape music in the background
😉
Sorry but Tolkien can’t be anything but #1! His books are just so phenomenal and like you said no other book comes close to what Tolkien did!
I would like to add The Wandering Inn to the honorable mentions🙂
Discovering The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings is like discovering a hidden treasure. The movies brought me happiness and a warm home the moment I watched them. That small seed of love for the series is just starting to grow, and I haven't even started reading the books yet. I'm pleasantly surprised myself. It really deserves that number one spot.
I found the naming convention in the Robin Hobb books threw me off a bit, I should go back to try it again.
It threw me off a bit at first as well, but it's definitely worth giving another chance!
I agree with most of your list. However, the series I am obsessed with now, and am reading over and over, is Spellmonger by Terry Mancour. Epic high fantasy meets sci-fi. Over 20 books and more on the way. Spellmonger does not get the love or attention it deserves. Each new book is better than the ones before it.
Mark Anthony -- the author, not the singer. The Last Rune series. My favorite fantasy series.
The runescape music!
I Just finished the Wheel of Time Series this Year and i liked it but i can't give the Series this high praise.
I liked the whole World building and the Magic System ist realy great.
But for me the Series is at least 3-4 books to Long and i think the Story is streched to Long. Plus a few of the Charakters are clearly 90s Fantasy tropes and realy anmoying for me.
I liked the Reading and i think it was a good Thing to read the Series but i can say i will read this Series never again.
After that i want to say thank You for your Content. This Video gave me Like 3 Series i want to read as soon as possible
Love Earthsea 💙
F & F is so good.
Hobb and Jordan are on my list 🥴
Amber is going on the list 🙌🏼
Tolkien deserves to be number 1 on the list. I actually agree pretty much with your list. Thanks for adding the Amber books at the end.
"Why doesn't the Belgariad get mentioned more?"
Weeeeeell, when the internet ramped up, people started finding out he and his wife had gone to jail for child abuse in a case that gets a lot darker than that.
So it's kinda hard to recommend him.
I'm sure the book series is being recommended, not the author's questionable past.
Hey, everyone! Any books series or stand alone with vibes similar to Elden Ring?
No surprises here, most of these videos suggest the same series. I'm more of a sci-fi reader, but I have really enjoyed the Echoes Sage, by Phil Quaintrell, and His Dark Materials, by Pullman. And of course, the LotR, GoT, WoT. I read Dragon lance as a teenage D&D fan, but found it simplistic and formulaic as an adult, which broke my nostalgic heart.
I feel like Cradle deserves a spot on this just for how ridiculously fun it is
Try _Shadow Campaigns_ by Django Wexler. The first book is a bit slow, but the second volume is one of my Top 5 favourite books.
Been interested in that series for a while! Always liked the cover and name of book 1. Will definitely try to get to it soon
I think the pronunciation of Number 2 slightly matters because the name is derived from the island where the empire originated. But, you can say whatever the heck you want.
Man love the Runescape soundtrack!
i appreciate the list, but isnt it strange that some of these books need many many sites till they get good? Isnt it a bad sign if you almost quit a book, because its so slow, so less is happening.. i mean, great if the book then gets "better", but shouldnt be book be good from the start? How can a series be hyped if the first 300 pages are such a ... distress. I dont have anything against slow paced, but some books just seem to start at page 300, while everything before that is pure characterization and i mean, good characters are great, but damn, bring them closer to me while the story unfolds.
If you want good music for reading fantasy, check out the dungeon synth genre. There’s thousands of talented dungeon synth musicians that upload all their work right here on CZcams. It’s ambient instrumental music specially made for fantasy novels and dnd roleplaying.
Glad to see The Belgariad on here, that series brought me so much joy and laughter, got me through some dark times haha.
