Johnny Carson interviews 105-year-old Mildred Holt in 1988: Footnotes: Highball is a very strong alcoholic drink Mildred passed away three years later and Johnny Carson died in 2005 aged 80.
So true! I loved the shows where he had animals on it, there was ALWAYS something funny going on, usually Johnny's reactions to them, or unpredictable things the animals did that Johnny reacted to in hilarious ways, like the time he got "scared" (real or not) and jumped into Ed McMahon's arms! I forgot what animal it was that made him do that, but it was so funny! Everything Johnny did was just naturally funny, you don't see that today!

I tried watching "late night T.V." after Johnny Carson, but could never stand any of the hosts, mostly they were egoists and wanted to talk instead of listening to their guests, who weren't that great either! I asked my 98yo grandmother what it was like to be 98. She replied, "there is always someone new to talk to...but no one left to reminisce over stories of growing up." She was talking about outliving everyone that was alive when she was young. And outliving many of her own children. She even admitted that when she talked about what it was like then, but wasn't really sure how accurate the details were. "no one there to say, 'no..i think it was different than you remember, didn't ...(fill in the blank)... actually happen..?' " . She eventually stopped going to funerals because it was too emotional to see all of her friends/family get sick then out live everyone. If you have someone in your family that is getting older, give them a blank diary and ask them to tell their story of growing up (what it was like back then.) Your gift of that diary (you gave them), will be the best gift you will get back one day.
@calihartley2010 I'm sorry to hear this. Do you know every thing about your parents? Asking them to fill out a journal, might be a great way to learn about how it was for your parents when they were young. Much peace and happiness to you.
Better. Sit with them and let them tell you and you write it down. They value the companionship greatly. Afterward, you will have the stories AND the memories of the time spent with them. I am truly grateful I took the time to sit with my grandparents and listen to their stories - life was so very different then.
I always noticed that most of the people who lived long lives who were born in the 1800s were from the Midwest or the rural South. I think most people from big cities like New York and Chicago smoked and drank too much back then and the smog from the factories must have shortened their lives too. Longevity is believed to be mostly genetic, but there's a definite correlation between healthy living and longevity.
Zenigundam I agree with your theory. This year (2018) my Aunt just celebrated her 103rd birthday in July. A month later my dad-who is the “baby” in his family-just had his 87th birthday. They were born in a very rural part of Ohio. And while they both moved when they became adults, they both have stayed in small towns that are surrounded by farm land in Ohio. So, anecdotally I’d say you are spot on! 😊
The last person alive on the Titanic died in 2009 (97) She was a baby and one that was saved off the ship. For 105 she is spry. Kirk Douglas (102) along with Olivia de Havilland.
Aunt Mildred was a hoot! As you can tell. Her caretaker at her house was an 80+ friend. When I visited her, after this show, Aunt Mildred still lived upstairs,. She was known by everyone in Ellsworth. I know the STOP sign where she decided to stop driving, was at the end of her street and one block to the left. When we took her out for lunch, over to Abeline, I had the good fortune to be seated next to her. The staff and other dining guests came over to say "Hello". I was told that, on a later vist to Ellsworth, even up until 2 weeks before her death she was going to church groups and playing cards with friends. Johnny kept Aunt Mildred on after the break and kept her through 'other guests' time slots, since she was so interesting. Our family lines date back to 1860's for a true, wild west cowtown in Kansas. Ellsworth County Historical Society maintains my bloodline, at the Hodgden House Museum. Drop down from I-70 and have a look. I'm not sure how many 'Greats' precede the word Aunt for me. But, she is one of my "Most unforgetable people"! Rest her soul.
She’s adorable. Since you’re family, she says on here that she has a 46-year-old daughter At that time. That would’ve had her give birth at the age of 59. Is that correct? I’m just curious.
Aww you were so lucky to have known her!! I’m retired just this summer as a nurse so I’ve taken care of many elderly folks and watching this interview just warmed my heart!!❤️ she’s a treasure

No politics, no BS, Johnny was the best. Watched every monologue from 1964-1967. Being a New Yorker and only 14 years old in 1964, Johnny made us proud that he used Manhattan as his venue. Show was awesome!
A feisty old gal wasn't she? My family used to own and operate nursing homes. The elderly have precious jewels of wisdom that they've accumulated over a lifetime just waiting for some young person to come along and listen. I learned a great deal from the residents of our homes. God bless them all.
I agree 100% about our seniors, Michael ! I was a bank manager for years and we operated a small branch in a couple of nursing homes.. those old people were such a delight and I LOVED listening to their stories! I'd go on weekends and play the piano for a couple of hours.. you'd have thought I was handing out gold to each and every one of them, they loved it so much! I THINK probably because quite a few of their kids dumped them off at these homes and then never came to visit very often.. was so sad when I learned which ones that had happened to, and it was a lot, I'm sad to say.
I couldn't agree with you any more if I wanted to either...The elderly people are a wealth of KNOWLEDGE, WISDOM, & PURE LOVE!!! She's as spry as they come at that age and sharp as a tack too. She easily has to be one of the greatest guests that was ever on "The Tonight Show" regardless as to who has been the host. I was enjoying this video clip so much that I was bummed when it ended before her time was over.
The video ends at a commercial break. But, Johnny kept her on after the break. Other guests got bumped. My cousin has a VCR tape of the whole thing. I've seen it and she stays on lots more. See my comments on my Aunt Mildred with the Big Red E.
Mildred lived her life to the fullest. Humor is always the best medicine. My mom was 94 years old and she always had a song in her heart. Love people. Mildred is the same way just listening to her.
This lady is an absolute doll. Johnny does such a great job interviewing her. She is so interesting and so confident. I couldn’t help notice that she said her oldest son was 80 and her youngest child was 46. That would mean she had the youngest one at the age of 59. I wonder if that’s correct. If so, that’s amazing too. Maybe a family member can chime in. I really enjoyed this video and it was a treat to watch.
Is it odd I’m 36 and I’m getting more and more into clips of Johnny Carson? I didn’t live through his reign. but living through Leno and Fallon, he has that Nebraskan style and charm they don’t hold.
This is so GREAT. I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE that this gentle lady still has the moves and isn't afraid to show them. Makes me smile everytime I see it. Thank you, "Dancing Nana!
She was a riot. Unfortunately, most people who live to that age cannot get around as well and do not have the mental sharpness that she did. Living to be above 100 must be lonely because pretty much everyone that you grew up with has already passed away, including possibly some of your own children. I'm glad this lady was able to enjoy life to this extent at age 105. Bravo!
"High-ball" , as soon as Johnny mentioned that term for Milly's rye and water in a coffee cup, it brought me back to the family house parties with all the guitars and fiddle music, and obviously, MANY MANY HIGH BALLS! 😂 🍻🍸🍺
Mildred was just a classic. So was Johnny. You could tell she was just having the time of her life that night. What a great lady. Kansas is still proud of you Mildred!
When this woman was born Chester Arthur was president of the US. There were 38 states. Women could vote in only two of them. There was no minimum wage, social security, welfare or unemployment insurance. The entire US government budget for 1882 was a little over $300 million. Life expectancy was ~45 (heavily influenced by high childhood mortality rates). The average income for a family was appx $550. Rent for a room in a typical boarding house was around $10/mo. A modest house could be had for around $1,000 depending on location and other factors. At your barber shop a haircut and a straight razor shave was 10 cents. The barber would also pull a bad tooth for a dollar. Beer was 5-10 cents per pint. Cigars were similarly priced. (Pipe and chewing tobacco were cheaper and more popular among the working class.) A doctor's visit was around $2.00. Few people owned more than two or three sets of clothing. Few people bathed more than once a week, and many did so less frequently. Electricity and telephones were novelties that few people had any contact with.
Mildred is one amazing personality, she's lived thru a lot of changes in our world. She's a very strong women, Bless her. It's really cool seeing her on the show, very interesting.
I love this amazing woman. Woman are incredible. Moms are awesome. I have one thing to say to all the wonderful mothers out there from the entire male race - THANK YOU --
I wanted to hear about the cards!? Why do people do this??? Don’t leave us hanging please !! But thank you for putting this on! Loved it so much! God bless!🙏😘
She's the second Centenial lady I've seen today...both ladies have something in common (other than their mental alertness)...good senses of humor! I think attitude may be a contributing factor to longevity. :)
This year I would be 37, Its amazing to see and hear someone in flesh and blood who is 103 years older than me , she was 100 even before I was born and soon I would be 40. This just reminds and reinstates my belief that this earthly existence is Transient.
People scoff at the idea that, a person can live to see three centuries. If a person was born in 1898, lived through the 1900's and dies in say, 2001-2003 or later; that individual saw three centuries. It's not to say they lived 300 years but through the course of their life, on the calendar, say three different centuries.

Yes it is! My hairstylist mother would agree! ( she had an older client w beautiful l9ng hair she wore up and pinned in place)
@L. L. her posture is excellent too! Sits li,e a real lady and her outfit looks great on her. There's not m7ch that's o.d lady-ish about her
& plenty of it too at 105
@No Name Well, if it was a wig, that was a very good wig.
Priceless interview with a wonderful lady.
I now have a goal, to be THAT mentally sharp and active in 55 years when I'm her age. Amazing lady.
@@NoOne-kr4jc Yes, indeed!

Johnny was always so respectful of his guests !!
The generation that was content with life.
This really lifted my spirit and I smiled the entire video. What an amazing lady she was.
What a gem she was! Thank you for this priceless interview!
I never thought about how long I'd live until the last couple of years. But if I do life to a ripe old age, I hope I can be like her! She's still so astute, and fun! (We sure do miss Johnny!)
She is wonderful what a delight to see her and listen to her story
I thoroughly enjoyed every minute she was talking. Her mind is incredible. I am 78 and I have decided to have a couple of highballs everyday.♥️♥️
Wonderful lady, I'm glad we were able to spend a few minutes with her.
My great great grandma was about 103-105. Its amazing to see people live that long back then.
Ol' Johnny really knew how to treat the ladies on his show! Love this gal....hope I'm just like her when I'm 105!
I agree! He was tickled by her! Loved Johnny and this lovely lady, and I used to be a Cosmetologist and she had very beautiful hair...what a beautiful spunky woman with class.💖
Grandma ha ha
In case you missed it Mildred was from Ellsworth, KS.
Johnny Carson is the man I am a fan,
She's as spry as they come at that age and sharp as a tack too. She easily has to be one of the greatest guests that was ever on "The Tonight Show" regardless as to who has been the host. I was enjoying this video clip so much that I was bummed when it ended before her time was over.
@Hello John how are you doing
The video ends at a commercial break. But, Johnny kept her on after the break. Other guests got bumped. My cousin has a VCR tape of the whole thing. I've seen it and she stays on lots more. See my comments on my Aunt Mildred with the Big Red E.
He was driving until she was 103, wow!👏
I needed a good laugh today! Thank you Mildred and Johnny...life was sweeter back then!
See,a great sense of humor is timeless!!
LOL OMG!! she is a DOLL! gave ol Johnny a run for his money, bless her heart!
She was wonderful. In every way. God bless her.
Wow...A son that's 80! What a wonderful lady..wish id met her
I can't get over her skin how good and clear it is for her age, remarkable
No cigarettes
Mildred lived her life to the fullest. Humor is always the best medicine. My mom was 94 years old and she always had a song in her heart. Love people. Mildred is the same way just listening to her.
I’d rather watch these kind of interviews than any others they do today. Great lady. One reason Carson was the best.
I imagine that she meant to say her youngest grandchild, as her children were born early 1900s.
What a beautiful lady! She drove a Chivy😁 Same thing my Dad called a Chevy❤️
Johnny can make ANY guest looks good and feels comfortable,
That's excellence,
When Late Night TV was enjoyable....sigh....Gee, I miss Johnny...
I love Johnny Carson. GOAT!
She’s remarkable!! I loved when Johnny took a sip of her drink. 😂 She’s so sweet and funny 😆 😊
What a charming woman. Take a hint ladies....this is who to aspire to be.
Nope. I don’t like her.
Beautiful Beast you can’t even talk properly. Poor thing.
@Thomas Truther Your're right. Women don't need someone like you.
How about you treat women properly... Mansplain elsewhere
well i know i aspire to be 105 and spry.....
What a darling. They don't make 'em like that anymore for sure
Johnny was class, plain and simple. I am blessed in being lucky enough to watch every show, but don't remember on of these . lol
Thanks for posting.
Mildred was just a classic. So was Johnny. You could tell she was just having the time of her life that night. What a great lady. Kansas is still proud of you Mildred!
AWESOME...Back when we had stuff worth watching. I haven't owned a tv in a decade.
she is incredible
This is my great aunt! I thought to do a search to see if I could find this episode, and was surprised it was easy to find. Thanks for posting it!!❣
Such a sweetie!!!
This lady was far more interesting than any "celebrity." Johnny seemed to think so too. Miss you every night Johnny.............rest in peace.
Her youngest daughter was 49! That means Mildred was 56 when she had her!!!! Wow....
Opedanderson
She just got mixed up on her daughter's age.
She is 105 after all!
But she said her son is 80 lol
@@kathrynmolesa1641 oh well
I think she said her granddaughter was 49.
No her daughter was 46, that means she was 59 years old when she had her
what a triumph to live nearly 110 years old
Your so right
C L - she’s 105, not 110 - lol
@@madambutterfly7513 thats why i stated 'nearly'

Mildred is one amazing personality, she's lived thru a lot of changes in our world. She's a very strong women, Bless her. It's really cool seeing her on the show, very interesting.
The greatest gift that a government can do is to pay all, absolutely all the bills for all people over 100.
I love this amazing woman. Woman are incredible. Moms are awesome. I have one thing to say to all the wonderful mothers out there from the entire male race - THANK YOU --
What a wonderful mind she has, keep your mind busy and open, if you lose your mind, you lose everything.
I wanted to hear about the cards!? Why do people do this??? Don’t leave us hanging please !! But thank you for putting this on! Loved it so much! God bless!🙏😘
Johnny Carson had the gift of gab and great timing. I miss him.
This is a brilliant interview!
She's the second Centenial lady I've seen today...both ladies have something in common (other than their mental alertness)...good senses of humor! I think attitude may be a contributing factor to longevity. :)
I just love her and love the Jonny Carson show. I only get to watch it on you tube.
She must be a stunning lady during the Edwardian Era wearing corsets, layers of petticoats, and silk satin dresses!!!
Ain't you the kinky one!
Love Jonny Carson ❤ best host of all ⏲ times! NO ONE compares to him. You have been a gift to us.
What a dear lady! But how could she have a daughter that's only 46??? That would have made her 59 when she had her!
This year I would be 37, Its amazing to see and hear someone in flesh and blood who is 103 years older than me , she was 100 even before I was born and soon I would be 40. This just reminds and reinstates my belief that this earthly existence is Transient.
We're just shy of 2023.....
I WISH we could turn 🔙 the HANDS of TIME to The BEST YRS. of my❤️ LIFE! I'm THANKFUL for the MEMORIES!!📺
Absolutely ☮️ 👊
I love Mildred, she's so hilarious and darling!
May her memory be a blessing!
Johnny Carson always the gentleman!!
People scoff at the idea that, a person can live to see three centuries. If a person was born in 1898, lived through the 1900's and dies in say, 2001-2003 or later; that individual saw three centuries. It's not to say they lived 300 years but through the course of their life, on the calendar, say three different centuries.
