*Cartagena de Indias is the official name of the city. Why "De Indias"? Christopher Columbus thought that by sailing West, he could reach what the Europeans called at that time "The Indias" (India, Indonesia, China, Vietnam, etc.) When he bumped into the American Continent, he called it "The Indias". It was Amerigo Vespucci the one who realized that what Columbus had reached was a new continent. And that is why the continent from Canada to Argentina is called America, in honor of Amerigo Vespucci.*

If you go to Spain, there is a building in Seville where they keep all the records of the Spaniard colonization in Latinamerica. The building is called "El Archivo General de Indias" (General Archive of the Indias). Columbus called the natives of the American Continent "Indians" because he thought that they were natives of the Asian country called India.*
