i think communique is extremely underrated
Loved it as ever kid, it's archetypal early Straits and of course in the same vein as Sultans, you really cracked it there, well done. So you've survived the camp out in Kingussie, I know the fish suppers are superb up there, so here's another travel story for today. A middle aged couple are on holiday in Malta and half way through their fortnight the fella is pretty well fed up with the local beer, he tells his Missus he's going out the hotel for a paper, walking along a street he hasn't seen before he spots the GEORGE AND DRAGON pub across the street, brilliant he thinks at last a decent pint, crosses the road and sees the doors are closed, looks at his watch is at 2:30 pm, he thinks to himself what's this shit, so bangs on the door, a horrible big fat woman shouts from a window above "what the f*** do you want ?", he takes one look at her and says " IS GEORGE IN ?". take care kid.
Hi John, here I am with my usual late response (been a busy week) 🤣. Another good one John. I see you’re clocking up a number of thumbs up to your jokes, from my followers. It’ll soon be time to start your own show 😊👍🍻

Lovely Exactamente
Thank you Rick 😊
Loving the channel Paul, just made my way to this video - truly wonderful mate, the inspiration I needed to keep picking up the guitar every day and keep plugging away.
Thank you Grant. Comments like that make it a pleasure to post videos!
Wow Paul. What an amazing deep dive into this song! So far past what I thought you’d do with it, even after some years I’m still awestruck at you ability to hear things that I’ve never heard within a song. Watching you then listening to the tune unlocks so many new things that I’ll then look out for as I listen again and again! Amazing also the dipping in you do to other tunes Communiqué and Layla and so on! Just within the blink of an eye you can surf through so many tunes it’s astounding. The thing for me that really sticks out is the chickin’picking and dead notes - it’s like you just unlocked a new level in my brain. Using those dead notes to articulate everything wowowowowow! I could go on for hours but the point is simply - thank you that was fantastic! Gonna spin up the record now and it’ll be like hearing it for the first time again 🔥🎸
Wow, now that’s a compliment! Thank you F MK, it was your good self that suggested I do this one, so thank you man, it was a blast. I’m delighted by your words 🙏. Oh, and sorry for late reply, busy week. Cheers
Sheer quality Paul, one of their best nailed effortlessly including the tone, mint...
Thank you John 😊
Hardtail strats for the win!
Amazing to hear you playing after a long time🤍
Thank you Saldash 👍
Nice one Paul! Always blown away by your understanding and control over the guitar 🎸
Ah, thank you David. Delighted to read such a lovely comment 😊
Thank you Paul, I always look forward to your great videos, every one a winner
Hope you and your family are having a good weekend.
Best wishes from Glasgow 🎸👍
Thank you Frank, glad you liked it. Cheers Frank
Super as usual,😉
Thank you Bill, nice to see your name popping up regularly in the comments. Cheers to you 🍻
Who needs a pick ! When this kind of beauty can be made with just the fingers, it's ethereal.......Beautiful tone Paul, thanks for the uplifting and inspiring video
Thank you altadena57. Delighted you liked it, cheers 🍻
What a fantastic channel. Congratulations.Brilliant.
Thank you Sir! Appreciated
Beautifully done. Nice strat. Thank you
Thanks Matthew 👍
Like you've said before Paul, you've got the ear. To pick this up by listening rather than watching and get it so right is quite something. I think you're teaching us to listen as well as play. Love it. That's me sorted for today's rainy day...and that's just minutes 4 to 7 :).
Thank you Ian, delighted you’ll get something out of it 👍
Dude. You killed this. So enjoyable to watch.
Thank you Jeffrey, I appreciate that 🍻
😍😍
Very well done Paul! 👍🏻💪🏻🎸🔥😎
Thanks Jose 👍
Great stuff Paul. Sounds like the real thing. Cheers Andy.
Thank you Andy, appreciated
Hey Paul!!! Great job again!!!! Very Nice. I have been playing the tune for years. But stil pickt some things up! Thanks a lot
Thanks Jeffrey! Yeah, I’m delighted you liked it 😊. Cheers 🍻
Definitely took away some nuggets from that one. Thanks very much. Great Job.
Thanks MarkTheCard 🍻
Epic MK would be proud 🎸👍🌟
Thanks Tim 😊
Another great clip. 19:00: "Knopfler: Sensitive to the music" - couldn't agree more.
Thanks Leo 😊
Bloody hell Paul, that was phenomenal, as a player who can not use a pick, always used fingers, there's a small glimmer of hope. But that was Knopflers doppelganger.
Thanks Eddie, love your comment 👍
Lord knows we all love it. Well done… that guitar sounds “creamy”
Thanks Hanmer 👍. Actually, having listened to your playing, I’m betting you’re no slouch at this one too! Cheers Hanmer
Time to study something "new"...many thanks Paul!!
My pleasure Alberto, cheers 👍
Flavours of sultans if swing all over. Nice job breaking it down.
Thank you Jim 👍
Just brilliant Paul . Much too advanced for me but I'm learning so much from it in little pieces here and there which will help me with my playing in general . So very well explained .
Thank you John! Delighted you liked it 🍻
Thanks 10^6 "Uncle Pauly" for putting this up!!! This showed up randomly on my CZcams, (not a huge surprise as I'm a subscriber), and I dropped dropped everything and learned it...well at least learned the licks on an individual basis. So iconically knopfler...wonderful and thanks again!
Thanks Paul, I’m delighted you liked this 👍
bravo Paul . au top.
Thank you 😊👍
Lovely job, Paul.
Thank you Glen 👍
Great breakdown Paul, we can all see the hours you've put into nailing Knopfler's style.
Thanks Graeme. Yes, lots of sore fingers and calluses over the years 🤣. Cheers for those kind words Graeme
Well and nicely played mate 👌👍
Thanks man
Really early on in my playing, I focused on my vibrato. I knew that it was a huge part of making my playing my own. I thought I had it figured out all these years later. Paul, your vibrato is next level stuff. I've learned (and copied) a lot of the nuances in your approach. If you're looking for ideas for a video, and feel like sharing, do one on your approach to vibrato. If you've done so, my bad and I'll have another look through the archives. If not, I'd imagine I'm not the only one who's taken notice of your technique. But be forewarned, I will soak up all of your secrets and make them my own lol. Thanks for sharing your passion.
Gus
Thanks so much Gus, your words leave me smiling. And actually, your idea on a video around vibrato is a great idea! I will give that some serious thought over the next few weeks.
Another person called gus! I’ve only ever met one other and that was an Angus!
Everytime i see you playing your Oswald, I wish I got yours. Looks so Badass and sounds incredible.
Send you pics soon. And will do an open box.
Udaman Paul! So melodic
Thanks Greg! Yes, I have my fingers crossed for you that it arrives quick. And yes, I will enjoy watching your unboxing when the time comes, I can’t wait.
Ma che bravo complimenti 😮 un saluto da Genova
Thank you, it’s appreciated 🍻😊
Excellent playing Paul. You have all the subtleties of Knophler.
Thank you Greg! Appreciated 👍
I have to agree with others saying you really have the Knopfler sound right on point. Sounds great. Those first two Dire Straights albums are a major watershed in my desire to play guitar. Though I never have gotten the hang of taking things directly off the record. He's really a part of how I approach guitar. Our tastes are very similar, and I sure enjoy your dives into that style. Thanks
Thank you REM1956 🙏
Admit it, that wiz just for me eh ? 😁 Feckin brilliant mate, not only Lady Writer but all those other wee snippets you slipped in. need to get practicing. The guitar sounding brilliant, but jing's that fretboard is fair manky, you'll need to pinch the Pledge off Rachel and gie it a wipe 🤣 seriously though, my favorite type of video from you, not seeing the chord shape first before trying to work out the lead pattern is always my downfall, but you get me on the right track when i see you doing it and shouting out the chord. nothing beats Knopler in my eyes thanks for posting , and here's to more like it :) Ment to add, your still the most credible reproducer of the Knopler vibe on this CZcams thingy, no one nails it quite the way you do 🥰
Ah, thank you for that lovely comment Charlie. Wouldn’t it be amazing if I got a comment from the man himself…..🤔. Don’t these rock stars ever watch CZcams 🤣. Anyway, cheers Charlie, glad you liked it.
Brilliant lesson, and you show what mastery you possess. You really nailed this one. It's so under your skin this technique that I suspect you've played your fair share of Dire Straits songs with your former band and when you're out buskin' the streets. I've also listened a lot to Mr. Knopfler and especially the "Communiqué" album. My bad is I never spent time learning the licks in depth. Thanks for this lesson, taking me back to the days I was just starting out on guitar, borrowing my brother's guitar and amp. Those were the days! Cheers, Thor
Thank you Thor! Here I go again with my late replies…. I find it difficult to catch up with CZcams until the weekend. Anyway, you’re right, I’ve spent many happy hours in my teenage years noodling along with Mr Knopfler. On a different note….. I think you said you were planning a trip to Aberdeen soon, with your wife. Well I hope you both enjoy it Thor…. And here’s hoping the sun pops out for a visit when you’re there 🤞
@@paulstaffordcook8799 I'm impressed that you take the time to answer all the comments on your video, and no wonder you need your time to catch up. I'm thrilled just for a heart on my comment, but a reply is of course wonderful😊 Yes, we'll go to Aberdeen this Thursday and will stay for the weekend. I've of course found there is a couple of guitar stores I need to visit. Not that I need another guitar 😆 but it's always a thrill to see what's hanging on the walls. Hopefully they'll be open the days we'll be there. 🎸
Absolutely brilliant Paul , nailed it , tone amazing cheers from Melbourne buddy
I'm in Launie, great to see another Aussie digging Paul!
His brilliant
Ah, thank you Martin, delighted you like it 🍻
Top drawer playing there Paul....
Thank you George 👍
That Cornell Romany 12 must be a Swiss Knife for almost all kinds of Guitar Sounds. And your Oswald Strat swings like Marks Red one in 1979 . Like it very much.
Thank you Michael, I like your words. Especially how my Oswald swings like Mark’s 🤣👍
Just so PLUCKING good Paul
Thanks Luís 🤣 👍
@@paulstaffordcook8799 you are most welcome
Awesome paul love it, paul im going to see robben ford live next week.
Thank you Paul! As regards seeing Robben next week…. man I’m jealous, he’s probably in my top 3 “guitar players of all time”.
@@paulstaffordcook8799 Yeah im a huge fan of robbens also i was over the moon to see him coming he's playing in a small venue type setup so it should be great to see him live.
Some mighty fine playing going on there Sir !
Thank you Malcolm, appreciated 👍
@@paulstaffordcook8799 The fact that I can just tap away on a keyboard and watch such mastery blows my mind sometimes !
Hey, that Cornell can quack.
Hats off...More difficult than Sultans and youve got that vibe.
Nothing for my pinky.
I didnt know that the Romany can get those spanky clean tones.Great
Thanks Haensel 👍
Great lesson of one of my favorites. Looks like you are playing a hardtail. I expect it would be much more difficult to get those bends on a normal trem based strat. At least guess I use that as an excuse.
Thanks Phillip, glad you liked my vid. Yes, the hardtail definitely turns it into a more tuneful guitar to bend on 😊
Fantastic and beautiful Paul! Thanks for doing this and sharing it with us all. What about that guy Mark Knophler? He was so very special . 🌠🌠🌠🌠🌠
Thanks Alistair! And yes, I often wonder how proud he must feel when he looks back at his career and the music he’s given us. Incredible
Paul Stafford Cook 🌠💕🌌👌
brilliant paul thanks ever so . fantastic analysis . i think you really got it . mark was a genius at coming up with these type of licks . hate the arrogant way he treated his brother though . like a lot of these genius types hes got an ego to match . dire straits were never as good without davids driving rythym guitar . in my opinion .
Thanks twelvemeister, delighted you liked the vid. 👍
Jeezus bud you nailed that and your guitar sounds great, a just wish you hadn't it relic'd, thin nitro finish and it would be starting to show your personality. Anyho I enjoyed this video as well. 👍🥃Respect to you bud.
Thanks Dunderhead 👍
Are you really pickin a fight with Joe?🤪😜😂🤣😅😆
An interesting thing to note is the sound comparisons between Mark Knopfler, Eric Clapton and so many of the British musicians of the time adding a European flavor to R&B and straight Blues. Of course the Beatles and Stones along with so many others had already been influencing music from the 50s&60s.
Marks influence on the 80s is definitely unique and clearly what set that Dire Straights sound apart from every other band.
Nicely done Paul.🤙
Thanks Gw 👍
Very beautiful looking Strat, tasty relic !
May I ask who built it ?
Thanks & Greets from Germany 😀
Thanks Timboland. Yes, it was built by Nick Oswald from Oswald Guitars in the Netherlands. I have this Strat and also his Jazzmaster. I love both. Cheers for watching.
Most renditions of this on youtube (all?) completely ignore Mark's expressive use of vibrato ...whereas you have nailed it perfectly. I generally pull down on the string (where possible, G & D strings) when playing this type of vibrato 1:51 1:55 and especially at 2:02 but I notice you have no problem with control when bending up! I can do it both ways but I find I get more sustain when pulling the string towards the floor .. do you happen to know which mark himself prefers?
Thanks Lee, I’m delighted you like the vid. As to which method of vibrato Mark prefers…. I’ve no idea, but I guess a few watches of his early vids might reveal the answer. Cheers Lee
@@paulstaffordcook8799 Actually, I just did a bit of a check around and on the live performance (at the rockpalast - 1979) you can clearly see Mark pulls down to add that vibrato at 2:02 ... he is mortal after all 😂
So that's why you had to have that Strat!😄
You’ve guessed it 😊. Cheers Nigel
Now we are talking😁
Thanks Neil, thought you might like that one 😊
What about doing a break down of the solo from So far away Live in 85 concert. I still cant nail parts of it ! Pretty please !!
Hi Malcolm. I’ve just watched it on CZcams to remind myself. Wow, brings back memories. To be honest, I don’t know if such a video would get views, i.e. it’s a track that tends to get bullied out the way by his more “in your face” tracks, like Brothers, sultans, telegraph road etc. But is was certainly a walk down memory lane watching it just now on CZcams 😊
@@paulstaffordcook8799 Possibly but you never know ! Knopfler is such a guitarist its not easy to figure out whats going on as there is soo much going on ! Well I enjoy whatever you put out ! Keep 'em coming Sir !
Horray!
Thanks Eoin 👍
Paul...Joe Bonamssa can be closer than you think..due to your fathers guitar collection..beacuse he seems to buy up all guitars in the whole world...so its not so unlikely he's lurking around somewhere in Edinburgh😅😅besides if be come close you can allways mesmeraize him with your out of this world nice vibrato//cheers..🇸🇪
Authentic, it could well be Mr Knopplfer himself.
Thanks Michael, hope I got in the ballpark 😊
Hi Paul, great playing. Just wondering what settings you typically have you Romany 12 set on? Do you have the EQ engaged all the time? I'm thinking of getting one. Thanks!
Hi Karl. Yes, I rarely use EQ cut….. but that’s not to say it’s bad. Actually it’s great, but it’s a strong flavour - boxy and full of mids - nice once and a while but not all the time. In fact, I used the EQ cut on my “My childhood heroes / Knopfler” vid czcams.com/video/HoluJ5TsAMk/video.html. If you scroll to 1:40 I’m playing Brothers in Arms with that setting. But 99% of the time I don’t engage it. And my EQs are always around noon on the amp. I do love that amp, hence why it features so much on my channel 😊
@@paulstaffordcook8799 thanks Paul, that setting sounds great with the Les Paul. Would you say the lowest attenuation setting on the Romany is quiet enough for late night practice?
Yes, and that’s this amp’s strengths…. That 4 stage attenuation is a god send. On the quietest setting (D I think 🤔), then at no. 1 on the volume it’s quiet but warm and clean. At no. 2 on the volume it starts adding a little hair to the notes (but still bedroom volume). At no. 3….. who needs an overdrive pedal 🤣. At 4 and beyond it really compresses beautifully, but not much louder. Hence why I’m on setting D 100% of the time. Late at night, I’ll have it on no. 1 on the volume but add a dirt pedal just to add the breakup that’s missing at no. 1. Hope this helps 😊
@@paulstaffordcook8799 that's great, thanks Paul, I appreciate you taking the time to respond. I think I'll have to get myself one of these. Keep the videos comin'! 😁
Sir, I have a request and I'm sure you will never say no!! Could you please play "city girl" By jj cale🙏
Thank you.
i can never get that fast lick at the end up to speed
Yeah, it’s easier if you just relax to a certain degree…. Mind you, that’s easier said than done 😊
Great playing as always mate. Have you jammed with any famous players in your time Paul?
Thank you Michael. Alas, no, I’ve led a sheltered life 😊.
@@paulstaffordcook8799 who would you like to jam with ??
Great question! Bonamassa for sure! Robben Ford…. Mark Knopfler…. Yeah, that would be a dream 😊
@@paulstaffordcook8799 that would be brilliant 👍
Yeah, the boy can play...
Were you in the mid+treb position?
Thanks Jonny 🤣. Yeah, it’s a 3 way selector….. so I carefully wedged it in that out of phase position between bridge/middle.
Amp settings?
Hi Skullish. This would have been my Cornell Romany 12 amp, which is a typical “Fender style” sound to it. The EQ’s were at noon, the volume was bedroom volume, i.e. number 2, so a fairly clean sound. Little bit of reverb from my Strymon Flint and that’s about it 😊
Beautiful. But already done by Mark Knopfler. Write your own great song. Your guitar skills are fantastic.
Good point. And thanks for the compliment 🍻
