I always confuse Japan's prefectures flags with company logos.
me too
They all really look like company logos
The design looks more like from the 2010s.
@@DerZufalligeMano probably, im abit outta touch in anycase i quite like them 😂
The company logo and the prefecture flags both came from a family emblems that ruled the country/company so it makes sense tho

I have to say, for someone who doesn't learn the Japanese language (I could hear by your pronounciation of Niigata xD), you put a lot of work into this video, finding all the right Kana and Kanji and finding out about the 3 systems! A+ :)
Amazing video, I'm a huge fan of these flags and am interested in Japanese prefectures more generally.
One thing to mention is that Tokyo, Okinawa and Nagasaki use Latin letters as part of the rebus imagery on their flag, not because they are large metropolitan areas as you mentioned, but instead because these three places have historically had the most ties with the West.
-Nagasaki is an historic port with a small area called Dejima, which between 1641-1854 was delegated as a Dutch trading post and was Japan's only link to the outside world during the lengthy, peaceful Tokugawa shogunate. From these Dutch merchants, Japan became (cautiously) exposed to western medicine, the Dutch language and other fields of study known as 'Rangaku' which comes from one syllable of Japanese pronunciation for Holland, 'ran' + 'gaku' (to study).
-Okinawa contains a huge number of US military bases since the US occupation of Japan following the Second World War. This is an ongoing source of tension with locals and nationalists, and has lead to the Okinawan island chain becoming more diverse than other parts of Japan.
-And Tokyo, for obvious reasons, is the most internationally diverse city.
The prussian music for a japanese flag video is a interesting combination =D

I love the classical music and march music you always use in the background, very cool that you worked the Königgrätzer march in there on this one, it’s a good way of helping to rectify the vilification of culture including this song. I like how it was included in Indiana Jones but I also feel like the movie made people associate the song with the Nazis, with which they already associated Preussens Gloria. And I understand the sentiment at the time, wounds were still fresh for decades, but I think as we move into a new geopolitical era in the last 8 or 9 years that puts WWII now 3 eras in the past (Cold War 1946-1991, and “post-history” 1991-2014), we can hopefully now start to recognize the difference between German and Nazi symbols. So well done, the reincorporation of German culture in to the greater historical narrative, end of the myth of the “dark ages” lasting any time beyond 962, or of Germans being a bunch of squabbling tribes during the HRE years, all are being accomplished on CZcams lately and it’s great to see this recognition once again after many years of (understandable) post-WWII misinformation
Edit: wow preussens gloria is in here too! Very cool!
I love how unique all of the flags are! Maybe you could do a video about the flags of Brazil?

Love to see traditional english county flags. Many of them are recently developed, but based on previous symbolism of the shires. There are online resources which can explain them readily available.
THANK YOU for making this vid
Japans prefecture flags are so awesome. Sometimes I wish countries would adopt them. Its a wonderful country that is inspiring in everything it does. Just looking at them work everything to perfection helps me keep grindong on CZcams.
A countries flag has lots of history behind it. It just wouldnt make sense for them adopt one from japaj
No, our flags and coat of arms have their own history and look as good, if not better. It wouldn't make sense for other countries too.
no country should just take some other country's flag...
except liberia state flags
Fun fact: Shizuoka literally means "Silent Hill" 👀
静岡(Shizuoka)
静(Shizu)=Silent
岡(Oka)=Hill
I didn't realize how much interesting and unique our Kensyo (県章) were till I watched your wonderful work here. Thank you for sharing.
Here are some things I noticed ー Kensyo might be called as the Prefecture logo or symbol than a flag. And ginko (銀杏/いちょう) is read with hard G sound as in gig not in gin.
Some corrections for the pronunciations of the prefecture names ー Tochigi (栃木/ち) with CHI as in chance, Niigata (新潟/にいがた) with NI-I and not as in night, Gifu (岐阜/ぎふ) with hard G as in git, Osaka (大阪/おおさか) with S not Z sound.
And about Tottori (鳥取/とっとり), as you can see in Kanji, the bird part is the first character, not the second/last part. (鳥/とり means a bird.)
Besides some weird pronunciation (which you can easily check with google translator for example) the video was very interesting and informative. Good visuals, too!
誰か、日本人はいませんか?
私だけっぽいですね。。。

In this and other worlds,Japan is one of my favourite countries and one of a few of my favourite Asian countries to be desired because of most of the good people, education, fashion, technology and many other good careers in my life forever and every generations that we would be born, good friends!!!I would wish that one day,I would only be visiting there if the coronavirus pandemic would be cured by a vaccine which I hope so as quick as possible and I would want to visit all the prefectures of the country to enjoy with the environment and atmosphere there with the people over there to be guiding me to visit all the places there, good friends!!!:-D
Can we all take a moment to appreciate all these flags? I think these are the most beautiful flags i've ever seen, they're so simple but that's what makes them unique. 🗾🇯🇵❤
9:26 Since Japanese writing system uses Katakana for foreign/loan words & Hiragana for indigenous words their use in the flags may also be based on whether the name of the prefecture is in a foreign word or an indigenous word, but it could also be that while designing the flag one letter looked better than the other for its use on the flag.
I studied Japanese in college and know the writing systems fairly well.
You are correct in regards to Kan'ji. They are the characters borrowed from China. Japanese officially uses about 2,000 of them.
Hiragana and katakana are much easier to learn, as they correspond with specific syllables. The difference between the two is this:
- Hiragana is the more cursive of the two, and is much more widely used.
- Katakana is the more angular of the two, and is primarily used as italics. Words of non-Japanese origin (i.e. English loanwords) are almost always written in this script.

Makes me think how US states really need new flags. Most of them are just the state seal on a background color.
Most of these are the prefectures symbol with a background

I'm just going to say it, Der Kongrater Marche is an... interesting choice of background music.
Thank you for introducing the coat of arms that symbolizes each prefecture in Japan.
Many Japanese know the symbol of the area where they live because these emblems can be seen on the flags on schools and government offices.
However, few people know the mark of the area where they do not live. Moreover, very few people memorize all the marks.
