How to light charcoal in 3 minutes with a Chimney of Insanity and BBQ Dragon Fan

  • It's actually sometimes closer to 2 minutes, but I don't want you to think I'm exaggerating.
    So, I've used the chimney to light charcoal about 900 times (best guess). Here's exactly how to use it to start charcoal in, let's say, 2.5 minutes:
    1. MOST IMPORTANT: Place the chimney of Insanity on the TOP grate, not the bottom (charcoal) grate. This is because you want to draw COOL air into the fan, not hot. Suck in really hot air, and your fan will be damaged.
    2. Fill with charcoal
    3. Wad up about 1/2 sheet of newspaper in a fat cigar shape, and stuff into the side hole.
    4. Light newspaper
    5. IMMEDIATELY turn on your BBQ Dragon fan and aim it into the side hole, and then insert the fan just a bit into the hole.
    6. When done successfully, the fan doesn't extinguish the flame, but actually blows hot flames up into the hole and ignites the remainder of the paper.
    7. You'll hear a roar like a jet engine for a few moments, which is cool, and not a big issue.
    8. Keep your eye on this set up. After 2 minutes, flames will be shooting up. Keep it on, well, not much longer.
    It's real.

    I've had mine going on a year now and I LOVE the damned thing. I use starter cubes, so I have to ease in with the air, but the cubes don't produce that annoying "fly around" paper ash. Still, my fire is up in 4-5 minutes and no need to EVER disgrace my food with lighter fluid again.

      Thanks for posting this. I think it helps people to hear it. If anybody has a chance to do an Amazon review for the fan, that would really help us. We're having an issue with Amazon customers complaining that their fan melted - and we're really trying to let users know that you just can't suck flaming hot air into the fan intake, like from directly above your charcoal fire. Also, I'm sure that when you use yours, you use up on top of the cooking grate, not down inside the grill on the coals grate, so it can stay cool.

    I don't understand why the video doesn't match the instructions that are printed on the paper sleeve that comes wrapped around the "Chimney of Instanity".
    The printed instructions:
    1. First light the paper UNDER that chimney and get the charcoal going.
    2. After 2 minutes, insert the BBQ Dragon and turn on LOW speed.
    3. After no more than 3 minutes, remove BBQ Dragon.
    4. When the charcoal is FULLY red, pour carefully into grill.
    By contrast, the video:
    o Puts paper into the ELBOW, not UNDER the chimney.
    o Does not wait 2 minutes.
    o Turns the fan on FULL speed.
    o Does not wait for the charcoal to be FULLY red.
    If the printed instructions are followed, it might be more like 10 minutes before the coals are ready for use, depending on how long it takes for the charcoal to be fully red.

    • @BBQDragon
      @BBQDragon  Před 3 lety +3

      You're right. I just read the packaging sleeve and it's wrong. That is my mistake. And it's particularly frustrating because we just manufactured a bunch more and I didn't catch it, and we have a new model coming out, and it also is probably wrong. Thank you for noticing this. I will change the packaging on the next run. In the meantime, the correct way is to put a half to 3/4 tightly wound newspaper in the elbow, light, and immediately use the fan. One of our Dragon Egg fire starters works well in there, too.

  • @kasterchoi7952

    Design flaw? BBQ dragon stamped or cutouts are useless if not hindering the mechanics. The fan just spits out most of the air...

    • @BBQDragon
      @BBQDragon  Před 4 lety +2

      There's a 90 degree tube inside the bottom of the chimney, so the air is actually not blowing into the area where the cutouts are, it's blowing up into the charcoal chamber.

    • @BBQDragon
      @BBQDragon  Před 4 lety +1

      Yes, your point is good, there is an aspect of BBQ which is relaxing, a time away from other responsibilities. And we have attempted to enhance that feeling. But in our surveys, very few people thought that a chimney which took LONGER to get ready, for example, 45 minutes, or 90 minutes, would be better. We did have a chimney in development which took 4 hours to have the charcoal ready, and it performed very poorly in market studies. We're just going to keep working on this challenging issue, but in the meantime, people who want to start their charcoal more slowly can just use this chimney in the traditional way, with no blower, and people who have hungry family members waiting for food can use it with a blower and be ready in 2 minutes. We're not judging. But, we are coming out with an XL sized chimney, for chefs with grills the size of wading pools.

    • @drdrew3
      @drdrew3 Před 4 lety +1

      BBQ Dragon I appreciate your lengthy response but a chimney does NOT take 45-90 minutes to ready charcoal. And even with the fan up yours takes 5+ minutes (not 2). Who are to you trying to fool ?!?

BBQ Dragon Fan owners probably already know this because it's in the instructions, but please note how the chimney and fan are positioned in this video, to prevent sucking burning hot air into the intake of the fan.

When I got the replacement blower I immediately put new batteries in it and guess what IT DIDN'T WORK!!! I played around with it smacked it with my hand twisted the blower neck around and it finally started blowing after bumping it a couple of more times. It started blowing slowly and then finally picked up speed. It has done this numerous times and now it won't blow at all. This thing is a piece of junk and not worth the money they charge for it.
