DEEP PURPLE COVERDALE, HUGHES INDUCTED INTO ROCK HALL - BLACKMORE, LONG WAIT

- Deep Purple's other vocalists David Coverdale and Glenn Hughes were both inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame with the classic line-up of Ian Paice, Ian Gillan, and Roger Glover, and they talked about Ritchie Blackmore not being there, burying the hatchet between the other members, and Coverdale ponders what could be for Whitesnake.
I think Ritchie Blackmore was right to not show up to the ceremony, despite making up with Purple. He didn’t show as a way to protest the fact that the Hall waited until after Jon Lord passed away.
yes, maybe ure right. Waited too much
Yeah; That was Majorly Rude!
Ritchie later commented that he simply loathes the awards ceremonies, and does not care about them, since every musician he admires is not in the R&RHOF, especially.
Glenn and David both deserve their inductions with Purple. They made considerate contributions to the band.
Absolutely pal.. 👍
Here here
They ruined the band. Three good songs from Burn and that's it, it went down hill from there.
@@dashriprock5720 not true
@@dashriprock5720 Burn is a top 3 DP album.
If only Tommy had been standing there with them.
Brilliant of David to acknowledge him.
Thank You Euan.
A person's frailty does NOT define them.
Tommy Bolin's work on Come Taste the Band is amazing. For starters, the so called shredders from the Eighties really need to listen to Tommy Bolin's work on Come Taste the Band as he not only could shred BUT knew how to incorporate shredding into a song.
Frosted Eddie Van Halen is a Tommy fan. VH covered The Grind early in their career live.
@@FrostedSeagull I think that If Bolin did not have died, Mark IV could make groovie metal the dominant genre in rock business...
Glenn Hughes and David Coverdale the voice of rock for sure
Burn and Stormbringer are great albums. Hughes and Coverdale really complemented each other vocally.
So is Come Taste The Band.
@@tedstone5934 That album is somewhat under the radar for how good it is.
I’m glad they acknowledged Tommy Bolin. He made his contributions to the band, and definitely should not be overlooked.
David Coverdale and Glenn Hughes definitely deserved to be inducted in the Rock N Roll Hall Of Fame for the incredible music they helped write in Deep Purple. As much as I love the Mark 2 lineup, I have always loved the Mark 3 lineup more. The albums Burn and Stormbringer are MASTERPIECES to me. The songs and the singing on them are incredible. The song Burn is one of the greatest songs ever and some of the best guitar riffs that Ritchie Blackmore has ever come up with.
These two are awesome. They should do another project together.
+keefriff99 id like coverdale - page project, was cool
I think Glenn did backing vocals on the self-titled Whitesnake album.
3:22 David has that cool, classic, elegant British speaking voice that belongs in a James Bond film. LOL
Amazing since he comes from Redcar, he's playing the role of 'upper class' englishman.
David still had that DEEP SEXY VOICE !!! 👍💜😍
Ok
No it’s a contrived fake accent, cultivated to endear himself to American audiences who seem to like that sort of thing.
I'll never forget...as a young boy....coming of age in the early 70s...when a friends older brother pulled out this album entitled "Machine Head", by a group called Deep Purple. He put it on the turntable....and it just blew me away. I was a young drummer...just getting started...and THIS was the kind of music me, and my buds, loved and played. Back in those days...we would put an album on...and just sit there listening to the entire thing...front and back. Reading liner notes in the album cover...scanning Rolling Stone magazine....Penthouse...just all the things a young 70s rocker would do. A little Jamaican Gold would most-times enhance the experience. What a Shangri-La time. Deep Purple was also so influential to other, prominent musicians...and obviously, deserve the induction greatly.
David and Glenn some of the best harmony vocal ever recorded!
I really hate the Hall for SOOOO many reasons. But seeing David and Glenn together in a conference is really, really great. David’s invitation to Richie is absolute class. And Richie always has his reasons and I totally respect that. I think the reason he sat this out was completely selfless, which is more than I can say for the Hall.
Blackmore is such a force that he's brought up first thing.
I loved the mk3 line up Coverdale ,hughes lord , peace & Blackmore loved the album burn & the California jam concert was just mind blowing
I am patiently waiting for more Coverdale projects both with Whitesnake, solo, Glenn Hughes, and whatever else. He is one of the best vocalists of all time as well as Glenn Hughes!!!
I just watched this on HBO last night. I would have liked to see Coverdale and Hughes perform Burn. But this current group is not used to performing songs from his era. I know Coverdale's looked upon by purists as an outsider, but Burn and Mistreated are two of my favorites from a band with a lot of really good songs. I think Coverdale probably sounds better than Gillan without backing vocals at this point.
It's a shame that Ritchie couldn't get over himself for one night and accept an award that was at least 10 years overdue. Hey, he could have refused to perform right up until the last 10 minutes of the show then gone on and wrecked his equipment.
It was a shame that Deep Purple shunned these two at the ceremony. They contributed so much to the band and are two of the nicest, warmest members of the band ever. Such intelligent gentleman with incredible voices.
Yeah, that wasn’t very nice of Deep Purple shunning these two at the ceremony
Did you see the acceptance speeches? The other members, Gillan, Glover, Paice were shaking hands and hugging Coverdale and Hughes. How the f**k is that shunning them??
@@CB-xr1eg Calm down, no need for vulgar language. Act like an adult. Anyway, there was some tension onstage but if you listened to the interview, it sounds like there has been a real lack of communication with the band. Neither you, nor I, are privy to that communication but I tend to believe Glenn and David and to take their word for it.
@@rft2001 So you're refusing to believe what you see with your own eyes on this video? That just smacks of stubbornness and pigheadedness. You obviously WANT to believe there's bad blood between them even if there isn't it.
And on another note, don't tell me how to behave, you're not my dad.
@@CB-xr1eg Then go ahead and look like a gutter level kid. The truth is that Deep Purple have always been a band that had a hard time getting along with each other.
It is INCREDIBLE that Glenn still has a powerful voice!
Coverdale strikes me as a really nice guy...
My 2 favorite members of Deep Purple!
Me too!! Coverdale/Hughes era is the BEST Deep Purple lineup!
very good David Coverdale !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! he reminds us also about Tommy Bolin ! very good David ! very good
+fabbux Maybe we also could talk about the Mk I members too in that case ?
we ? maybe Mr Paice could say something about MK1 , not me , not you :) why exactly mr Paice ? simple ! because he is the only one who played in MK1 :) Mr Coverdale rightly said about Bolin , simply because they played together in MK IV
fabbux Ritchie Blackmore too was in Mk 1, Jon Lord is gone by now. There are 2 other members lost somewhere in space and in anonimity...
who is present in this party ? Blackmore no ! only Paice , Gillan , Glover , Hughes , Coverdale ( maybe Morse and Airey , i don't see) Who was member in MK I ? only Mr Paice , Ok ???? so , Coverdale was very lovely guy remembering fantastic Tommy Bolin , because , I REPEAT , they played TOGETHER in MK IV . If someone would want to remind the good Simper and Evans , this guy can be ONLY mr Paice , Ok ???? understand ??? no me , not you
@@Retroscoop I always thought that mk1 was under rated, Nick was a good bass player, Rod Evans was a great vocalist who moved on to the great CAPTAIN BEYOND ( loved those guys ) . Rod unfortunately is out of the music business. Rumor - Rod is a respiratory therapist in L.A. too bad, I heard 2 surviving members of Captain Beyond are recording a new album, No ROD, NO CAPTAIN PERIOD. .... Every mk. of Purple had/ has a great gift to share with us, THANKS GUYS......
my favorite albums of DP with David and Glen !
Glenn and David are true Gentlemen of Rock well spoken
Such wonderful men! Just beautiful people.
If there is a religion about guitar and guitar music, Richie must be the prophet
It's kind of a mess really how Coverdale goes in with Deep Purple but Ronnie James Dio doesn't go in with Black Sabbath.
AIS F@cking shame
Coverdale deserves his induction but I still don’t know why Dio was snubbed.
Yeah I didn’t understand that?🤷🏻♂️
Good on yous Glenn and David, flying the flag for Mk3 and Mk4, Gillan, as much as love you you can't ignore Mk3 and 4
Without Blackmore NO real deep purple
Amazing energy by Coverdale!! Is this guy really 65? I'm sure he 'll rock until late his late 70's
+Neueregel Coverdale and Hughes are both 64, turn 65 later this year. Glenn's voice kicks everyone's arse these days.
Ozzy is 67 and almost on deathbed. Dio's dead. Rob Plant can't sing much.Roger Waters the same. So these guys set a great example on rock longevity. Glen's kind weird but good guy and nice that he got over his coca-drug problem.. Coverdale kinda cocky but in a rockstar context, and he knows when to stop. Always good with the ladies. A real rock gentleman. I'm not even much of a Purple fan (as I am for Whitesnake), but I got nothing but respect for both them. Kudos to both.
Jon Lord would be proud for them
Neueregel It’s not the same for everyone. Hughes and Coverdale record and tour routinely with their bands, and they still perform like they did in their 20’s. I’ve seen one recent performance where Hughes actually jumped up while singing. They’re gonna be around for a long time.
Coverdale looks great, great speaker, aged well, intelligent, well spoken
He had a facelift that helped with the ageing. Glenn looks great and still sounds great when you consider what he went through with drink and drugs.
looks barbie
I really enjoyed the DP albums with David Coverdale. He seems like a good fellow.
He would be hes a yorkshireman!!!
The real reason Ritchie didn't go was that the HOF waited induction until key co-founding member Jon Lord had passed on.. And I don't blame him a bit!
Its great these two finally got inducted. Well deserved. Shame tommy bolin wasnt there RIP. Two great friend s, two great singers. Deep purple Burn album great record. Love come taste the band too. Glenn and david harmonise well together. No egos, just respect and admiration for each other.
finally but still got no respect for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame
Right ? 5 years later and it's only worse
nor me not untill Grand Funk Railroad are inducted!!!!
@@Mff48 agreed, one of the Greats
Hey what about Nick Simper fucken unreal?
+lstar ”starcloudel8d” rtna and Rod Evans?
+lstar “starcloudel8d” rtna And Rod Evans??
+Ira Sherman Such a parrot! ;)
Rod Evans disgraced himself and was expelled from the DP family when he went on tour with the bogus Deep Purple in 1980.
Maybe Glenn Hughes could appear on a Whitesnake song in the future?
David has that rockstar smile.
That's American teeth for you!
Deep Purple Brand continues.. Definitely.
IN-definitely...
David Coverdale the best singer of DEEP PURPLE and Glenn Hughes the best bassit of the DEEP PURPLE.
I agree! And there is no doubt about this, period!!
David Coverdale should definitely join Glenn Hughes on stage to perform Deep Purple Mark 3 & 4 songs in future because it’s nearly the 50th anniversary of Burn and Stormbringer
I agree! Deep Purple MK3 is by far THE BEST lineup!
You're a love David.............. Canada Loves you!!!!!!!! xo
They put some soul into Purple
i used to fall asleep to this album every night at bedtime, as a 15 yr old when it came out in 74/75...used to have a record player that would play one side and then automatically shut off; i listened intently to the vocal duo of coverdale/hughes and enjoyed them intensely; this was before vidoes/images etc, where you had nothing to draw you in, but the music
these two are clearly friends. awesome
HEY T Crane,
What is really frustrating is that both Glen Hughes and David Coverdale do occasionally talk to Blackmore. Unfortunately, Blackmore won't do a Mark III re-union. Damn as I'm a huge Mark III fan.
Frosted Ritchie Blackmore has always an ego. He’s not been on very good terms with Hughes or Coverdale since he first left Purple in 1975. He hasn’t gotten along with any of his former DP bandmates since he left the second time.
Child in Time, Woman from Tokyo, Perfect Stranger, are DP's classic hits that only be recognized by rock/metal fans. But Soldier of Fortune has made DP a rock superband which made music-fans from all genres recognized them. Even Tom Jones fans would know Soldier of Fortune and they could like it. But this wouldnt be happen if Coverdale never was in DP.
Happy that they were finally inducted. Motorhead, Dio, etc. still not in HOF. Shame. Ronnie James Dio with his career should be in the HOF, no question.
Brandon Chiger right!!!!
It's a damn shame that RONNIE JAMES DIO isn't in the H.O.F. He's THE GREATEST HARD ROCKING / METAL VOCALIST OF ALL TIME PERIOD. .... Not to mention his unbelievable song writing skills. But above all, Ronnie was a true GENTLEMAN. R.I.P RONNIE. ....
How come David and Glenn were separate from the other 3 during the ceremony?
It gives me a tear when Coverdale speaks of "burying the hatchet" with Blackmore and reconnecting from the passing of the great Jon Lord. I wish Ritchie could have showed. I know he has an appreciation for his peer Steve Morse.
Yeah any interview that I've ever heard Ritchie always speaks very highly of Steve Morse. Ritchie was effectively banned from showing apparently by Deep Purple and Former Rainbow Manager Bruce Payne and Ian Gillan. I've never really liked Ian Gillan after that tbh. He forgets that Deep Purple isnt his band and he was only a hired hand but he acts like Deep Purple is his baby.
@@markgowans Nobody forbade Ritchie - they do not have such power, they simply refused to perform with him, and this is their right. As for the hired worker, Gillan is not a hired worker, but the member of the group who put all his strength and talent into making this group mega-successful. If not for him, Deep Purple would have become a one-hit group that no one remembers anymore, like other one-hit groups of that period.
check it out! What a nice guy David Coverdale is!
check out his twitter account hes bloody hilarious!!! great guy!!!
Two great artists and gentlemen.
Such exquisit English! (I am a German-native speaker, so I did not intend to be kidding). And of course, I have been listening to them since my early teenage days (was given the Burn album for my 14th birthday).
Great to see them both deservedly inducted into the rock and roll hall of fame. They were a big part of Deep Purple from ' 74 to '76. It is kind of ridiculous for Purple to not include them in the performance. Burn would have been a great choice to play.
LEGENDS!!!!!
Deep Purple MK3 is by far the best line up!
Fernando Souza lol
Get real
Great Interview David and Glenn! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐💜💜
Burn and Stormbringer are the best studio albums they ever made, i don't care what you think. Not the best live band they ever had but god damn those songs are great.
"I'm a well dressed pijama type of chap." Lol
Rod Evans got inducted but why not Nick Simper ??
Glenn looks like he’s cosplaying Beetlejuice.
These guys were deep purple after mark 2 but they had contributed some great songs to the purple family

My Heroes.
always loved Tommy Bolin. Tommy was an amazing guitarist singer writer .When i first heard him on Billy Cobhams Spectrum album he just blew me away.I have mostly every album he has played on and of course his two solo albums.
g clark Great great great
It was actually the Spectrum album that convinced Coverdale to offer Bolin the job with Purple.
Great musicians! I wish long-term creativity for you
100% deserved....Whitesnake need to be in there too!!
Several members of Whitesnake (Coverdale, Marsden, Moody, Aldridge, Vanderberg, Murray and Sykes) should be included in the HoF.
I dont think Moody & Sykes will ever appear on a stage willingly with David again. They both hate him with a passion because of how they were treated especially Micky Moody. Sykes is just a egomaniac and is still pissed even after all these years that he got kicked out of Whitesnake
@@markgowans yeah, you're right; with Coverdale already inducted (as a member of DP Mk III), and knowing how lazy and cynical the RnR HoF is, Whitesnake will never be inducted. Anyway, Moody and Sykes are both oversensitive primadonnas who know how to hold a grudge (Moody also suffering from low-esteem issues); Coverdale has made peace with Marsden and Vivian Campbell, for example, but Moody and Sykes refuse to relent,. lol
Where's Grand Funk Railroad?
Un abrazo a mis Cuates Del grupo Deep Purple y David Coverdale ok ! ? 🎸🥁 💫 💥
MKll were great but MKlll were on another level
Deep Purple MK3 is by far THE BEST lineup. Period!
I think only Gillan and Ritchie are having difficult relation among members...
Glenn and David Bowie shared the same coke dealer
+falica77 Glenn kinda looks like Mickey Dolenz there. lol
+John Smith Haha I was thinking the same thing!!
YEP!! haha!!
+Carl IJE I don't do coke and have never lived in LA. Duh!
Blackmore was always a Pepsi guy.
The HOF are a joke the way they've made some great bands wait & wait & wait while they induct rappers and r&b etc. Not to mention the way they decide which members of a band should be inducted and which shouldn't. Coverdale & Hughes in for Deep Purple but Dio not included with Sabbath, Eric Carr not allowed in for Kiss, Springsteen's entire band inducted including a couple of guys that were in and out before he was famous... it's crap.
Thanks for your comment john, but it doesn't stack up. There's no consistency in the way the HOF induct, Springsteen's band being just one example (Sancious & Lopez) and I doubt there'd be too many hard rock fans that would rate Dio's work with Sabbath as less than what Coverdale & Hughes achieved with DP.
@@aflsteve9139 Are you sure? Dio has released great albums with Black Sabbath and many fans rate his work higher than Ozzy's. And I'm even worse, I'm like fans of Coverdale and Hughes - I love Born Again the most 😄.
Rock And Roll Hall Of SHAME.
Shame that Gillan and the others members didn't let Blackmore to be there and shame that Ian Gillan never wanted to perform live songs from Coverdale/Hughes era.
HUGHES, Rob Halford and Bruce Dickenson greatest living singers
Tommy Bolin - LEGEND
buena vocalizacion tiene Coverdale
2 legends
Inducted to the hall of fame a little late in my opinion
15 years late
Well this is really woot and cool as a Moodies fan, it's nice to think their own musical kin
might turn the tide on that.
Tommy Bolin R.I.P.
Best band live credits
MARK !!!
Lol.. I love these two
And now thumbs up for the billionth fan who will write something about mk2 was better of mk3 or viceversa
HEY Davidroger78,
I'm guessing that we're in the minority but Mark III was the definitive version of Deep Purple.
WHY - as Glen Hughes said it " like it or not Blackmore is a damn funky player . . .".
Burn the album is a MASTERPIECE! 🤩
The rhythm is superb.
Blackmore plays the blues and the Mark III and early Rainbow standard - Mistreated performed live - is perfection.
Class acts
Deep purple was Ian Gillian
Deep Purple MK3 is by far THE BEST lineup!
Thanks David…For Tommy Bolin.
crazy that ritchie was not at the awards ceremony
I’m sorry for Tommy Bolin..Come taste the band is one of the Best Album.
Still a cutie David Coverdale 😉
Love purple but David should be in with Whitesnake as well.
coverdale el unico 😄😍
Glenn Hughes STILL looks like Bob Hope!
Blackmore's absence wasn't a surprise, but Evans - wish he'd appeared.
Ian I think still has the Deep purple band and the name I believe so induction in does band or do they have to be broken up no longer to get huh???
👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
Where is Rod Evans?
If David and Glenn included with the DP in the HOF... THEN INCLUDE DIO AND VINNIE WITH THE SABBATH FOR FUCK SAKE!!
Wish Glenn had played on the purple album by whitesnake
