    In any other movie I would have been SO pissed off, but I found myself sitting next to two girls maybe 9-11 years old who would not stop talking the entire movie. But I said nothing and instead listened and heard two young girls absolutely loving this movie. One kept talking to WW: "No Diana, watch out!" or "Diana, you forgot your sword!" or "Wow, look at her fighting all those guys!" and the other girl more fan-girling: "Oh, that's just like in the comics!' or "That's what they said in issue..." or "That was her original origin, but then..." After the movie they turned to me, an absolute stranger in a Superman shirt, and wanted to talk about how good the movie was and insisted I take their leftover popcorn because they didn't want to waste food. I couldn't believe how much joy they got from this movie and how much joy I got seeing how much joy they got from this movie.

      Dave Dranow I like your story. People get so caught up in the Marvel vs DC beef that they forget to just enjoy the movies for what it is. Us adult already had our childhood moment with 89 Batman and 80s Superman. Now the girls have their own hero they can root for. Wonder Woman is great and has just inspired a whole new generation.

    Robin Wright was just incredible as Antiope because she brought that ferocity which was incredible and understood that her niece is destined for greater things and now is the time to train her. The moment with Hippolyta telling Antiope that you will train her 5 times as harder was just perfectly executed. I never imagined Robin Wright as a Warrior and seeing how she pulled it off itself was impressive.

    weirdly enough I cried twice and not during parts that you would normally cry. I cried during the first battle scene with the Amazons because I just thought it was amazing how bad ass they were, but I was so devastated because they were naively going into battle against weapons they have never seen before... and then yet they adapted and still kicked major ass! The second time was when Wonder Woman was in the front line trenches and she was so determined to be the one to stand up and do something and she didn't doubt herself one bit. She just did what needed to be done and it was such a beautiful scene!! To me it just demonstrated a true hero.

    I like how this movie could have very easily been preachy, but didn't. They showed the sexism of the era and they showed Diana proving all of them wrong.
    I also like how Steve Trevor realized very early on that he was not the hero of the story, but a supporting character. Being a man from the early 20th century, you'd expect him to have difficulty with that. But he actually embraces his role. He even says right before his sacrifice that he was going to save the day, but Diana was going to save the world.

    One of the reasons this film works is that Wonder Woman is allowed to be wrong. It doesn't have to belittle the other characters in order to prop her up and the film never throws Diana under the bus in order to seem cool. The development from someone who sees the world as black and white who comes to understand the darkness within human nature worked very well. It presents these problems yet doesn't provide any absolute solutions. It shows us that we need constant vigilance in order to fight back against our individual darkness, and even then the fight won't end. Diana is in a morally gray world yet her optimism is never lost. She works as a counter argument against the cynicism by never losing her optimism.

  • @geling101
    @geling101 Před 7 lety +35

    The cynicism that some people have about Wonder Woman is truly mind-blowing. Just let people hype things that they love 😩 It's not like it's not well-deserved anyway. It's the first superhero movie led by a genuinely great female character. It's the first good DCEU movie, too! 🙌

    I really liked this movie. 7.5/10 in my opinion and easily my favourite DCEU film so far. Not a fan of BvS or Suicide Squad (they have some moments), MoS I found decent but still had issues.
    Things I liked:
    - Gal Gadot's performance (her innocence especially)
    - Chris Pine. Enough said.
    - The story was pretty well executed
    - The visuals and colours (the DCEU doesn't have to be dark and moody to try and make a good film)
    - Surprisingly funny in areas
    Things I think could've been improved:
    - There was way too much slow motion
    - The villains weren't developed that well
    - The final battle was a stereotypical CGI mess of a boss fight

    • @metalarmfau
      @metalarmfau Před 7 lety +5

      there's nothing wrong with loving this movie. While I can't speak for everyone who thinks the same, I think it's overhyped because most reviews have glossed over the 3rd act and poorly fleshed out villains. I wouldn't say that's nitpicking because the antagonists in movies are important and the final act is the final impression the movie has on you before leaving the theater. I left happy but not overjoyed because of those flaws.

    • @steveophillipo6679
      @steveophillipo6679 Před 7 lety +2

      Brandon Brown how is the 3rd act different from any other explosive superhero movie third act. just so you know one of the reasons people love superhero movies is explosive action

    • @metalarmfau
      @metalarmfau Před 7 lety +8

      You're right, explosive third acts are common with superhero movies. My problem with the third act here is that it comes across as noise rather than epic. Ares has all these arbitrary powers for some reason so it's impossible to tell how in control of the situation WW is or isn't. Can he keep disappearing at will? Is he immune to fire? Is he using telekinesis or abstract god bending will? Is he controlling fire and lightning? Can he control all elements? The movie never sets or prepares a baseline for how strong Ares is, it just says he's the god of war and then throws the kitchen sink at you. On top of that, I have no idea how WW defeats him. Are the gauntlets magic? Is that her magic? Is her God killer power reliant on turning another god's power back them? Is it tied to her anger? Is it tied to humanity? Did Ares even die (probably not but that's fine)? I just didn't know what was happening. I liked the movie, but none of that worked for me and I think its a fair critique that shouldn't be glossed over. If you enjoyed the spectacle, cool, I just needed the rules to be clearer so I could understand what was happening.

    • @metalarmfau
      @metalarmfau Před 7 lety +2

      That's a good point. They address it, I just think saying it didn't bother them feels too subjective (I get all opinions on movies are subjective I just think this might be a bit far) to the point it is glossed over. Going back to the "overhyped" argument, I think because reviewers are being dismissive of the 3rd act, they're raising expectations to higher than they should be. Thus why I would say it's overhyped.

    The best part of the movie was the chemistry between Gal Gadot and Chris Pine.

      Bo Xue Yes thats why i didnt mention him.He is just way too dramatic. I mean come on, WW was a great movie but not that life changing. It really took away the seriousness of the subject being discussed. Its sad to see such low intelligent thinking on these shows sometimes. They could have talked about how the approach to ww and superman was unique in that WW was born and brought up in a near perfect society, trained to be a warrior and she is a demi god. Superman is a demi god who was brought up on the other side of her world and therefore has his imperfections because he was never trained nor had the journey to build up on discipline and such. Their duality in terms of power and outlook etc.That discussion would have been so amazing to hear. Like it or hate it, the Dceu character approaches are honestly slowly making more sense.

    All that truly matters is the reactions of the kids. Because years from now they will be in the same position we are today. We already had our moment with 89 Batman and Superman. Spider-Man, XMEN and The Avengers.

      So no matter what Patty Jenkins wanted to avoid she really didn't have a choice. Because Wonder Woman is the poster child for Feminism. But not the crazy male bashing feminism of today. But more so when feminism first started out. Like being able to vote etc.

      The reasoning being, why should an island of warriors have an accent they've never encountered before being descended from the Greeks? I think Gal's accent fits much better. Much more accurate would've been if they all spoke Ancient Greek, but then we wouldn't understand a thing, unless the movie was subtitled, and of course most people off Themyscira wouldn't understand a thing, making communication harder, and I'm thinking way too much into this.

    My brother brought me to see this for my 56th birthday and I was blown away! Finally a movie that is not afraid to express 'female' and 'strong' simultaneously. It reminded me, in some ways, of hearing Helen Reddy's song 'I Am Woman' when I was a preteen in the early 70s. That acknowledgment that yes, a woman can be strong, without losing her femininity. I absolutely LOVED this movie. I laughed, I cried, I felt every emotion that Diana did and I went on the ride Patty Jenkins designed joyously.

    Diana’s character has the most depth out of all the other superhero movies so far. She is shown to be strong of character without the in-your-face “look how badass and special this girl/woman is”. And even though she is barely dressed, she is never objectified. Unlike Lois in the other DC movies or Black Widow in the Marvel movies, whose movements are still are sexualized.
    But more importantly, Diana is genuinely likeable. There is no way anyone can walk out of this movie and not fall in love with Gal Gadot.

    My main issue with Wonder Woman isn't even a problem created by the film itself! Again BvS ticks me off because in NO WAY does the Diana at the end of this film give up and retreat from being Wonder Woman for 100 yrs!! Nothing gets her back into the fight? WW2!? Jewish genocide?! Hiroshima?! The entirety of the horror that is the 20th century?!? Nope, she's done, until she gets a goddamn email about that picture with Steve from Bruce Wayne just as a dumb Kryptonian Goblin starts destroying some east coast cities and nearly kills a Bat fetishist and the mopey alien that destroyed Metropolis 18months earlier?! That doesn't fly IMO! It's just more evidence on how the Snyder modern day DCEU JL bullshit is so freaking flawed!!! Patty Jenkins is far more equipped to steer the DCEU moving forward! Also the reveal of David Thewlis as Ares was not a shocker but he was great as The God of War. The rage and carnage Ares carried is what Diana had carried too but she was able to suppress which was nice. jo romo "nearly perfect film", "it was THAT good" - seriously? I understand that you liked it and stuff, but seriously, you're overpraising it. The CGI was horrendous, the use of slow-motion was too much and got old really fast, the very end of the movie was awkward as Hell, the third act was just a big mess and the villain was terribly miscast. It's an OK movie, why does everyone act like it's an amazing cinematic achievement?

    • @kearndawg1278

      DieWilWheatonDie I think people are overstating the CGI issues, some wasn't great. But only a time or two did I think it was bad. The slow mo actually worked here imo considering how fast she and the Amazon's fight and with the level of finess they fight, I usually hate slow mo but here I dug it. The 3rd act wasn't as good as the rest, but it still was fine and kept me entertained so I can't complain too much.

      @DieWilWheatonDie Před 7 lety +2

      Kearndawg1 I can't see how anyone could like this amount of CGI in that film. First of all it all looks really two-dimensional, fake and blurry and reminded me of «Gods of Egypt», the worst part is probably where Steve drops a bomb when he steals a plane and everything around him turns into weird CGI explosion. Besides being unrealistic it was also overused, like every explosion or flame there was CGI, come on, can't they actually do any practical stuff? Slow-mo makes sense when you need to show something that can otherwise go unnoticed by the viewer, but here it's used in every action scene, even the most simple stuff like somebody firing an arrow or doing a backflip apparently needed 10 seconds of slow-motion each, it looked like the director really wanted this to look like «300» but went overboard.

    What I really loved in Wonder Woman was Diana running around as a kid and greeting people in such a way that gave me a wonderful sense that the entire island was raising her communally.
    Getting a feeling like that within the first 10 mins of the film really sold me on the emotional strength of the film.
    Like she may have gotten her powers from mystical/magical origins, but her heart and abilities were all sourced from the community around her, all the qualities of the Amazons were her inheritance.
    We don't spend much time on the island but she carries it within her for the rest of the film.

    I absolutely loved this review of the film. Much of the reviews I've seen mostly talk about the no man's land scene and the very big highs and their minors low in the film. This review really went into detail with Diana's character and the development she went through in the film and THEN related it to how it affected the highs and very minor lows. This review really helped me understand what I loved about the film and made me appreciate it's depth. When I left the cinema the second time I watched it, I was really overwhelmed by how well the film made me go through the emotions Diana felt seeing all this carnage and damage the war has been doing. I was with her and I felt her need to help and her struggles to understand the evil. This movie sold me on such a cheesy lesson but it did not even feel like that. My brain is just used to thinking that 'love is the answer' is corny but it was so well executed and well earned in this film.
    And also, I didn't know how important this film was until I saw it the second time with my mom. My mom doesn't like comic book movies because she thinks it's all about magic and chemicals and robots and aliens. she was apprehensive in watching this but when we left the theater, what she said struck me. My mom is not one to talk about emotions and is very straightforward and not PC, but when were outside the cinema she said "you know, I wish Wonder Woman can save all those people in Marawi. If she was there, she could help them feel stronger. Maybe she can tell them about all that love and peace stuff. That's probably what they need right. That's what Wonder Woman said." This film did that! I thought it was gonna be about how Wonder Woman is a superhero that's a girl but this film sold us on believing in love and unity again. My mom never says cheesy shit like that but when she said it, it was just so simple and true for her that it just made sense for her to say that and I agree with her.

    I genuinely think Ares is one of the best superhero movie villains seen onscreen. His motivation has a reality and pathos which is unsettlingly truthful and he's the perfect foil to Wonder Woman's Ideals of Love, Peace and Tolerance. The CG was like any other CBM ending but with a message. The personification of War and Peace at battle. WW representing the light part of humanity and Ares the dark. Both having valid motivations in their believes of human nature. Concluding in a metaphor of championing values of compassion and tolerance over hatred and prejudice.

    I don't begrudge anyone who didn't like the movie, but a lot of naysayers seem to be trying too hard to convince others the movie isn't as great as most are saying it is. Sure a lot of people are really fanboying and fangirling over this movie, with good reason, but it's not like we didn't see a ton of that when the Dark Knight came out, and it got down right ridiculous with Dark Knight Rises with death threats. My unpopular opinions; I liked Guardians vol 2 more than Vol 1. I'm one of those who likes Avengers more than the Dark Knight, but I also like Age of Ultron more than the Dark Knight.
    All I wanted from this movie was a good movie. I got a great movie. I love it more than Guardians vol 2 and Logan. Homecoming and Ragnarock are going to have to be really good to compete with Wonder Woman. And now I'm a little more hopeful for justice League.

    Diana left the world of man for 100 years. Even in BvS we saw her on the plane and did a momentary soul search as to whether she would involve herself in the battle. Obviously she did enter but it wasn't a gung ho moment of her just rushing off.
    Also loved that it took Ares all that time to figure out who she was. That tied in beautifully with what her mother said about "As she gets stronger ... he will find her." So of course he didn't know who she was when they first met because she didn't do anything yet.

    Marc Andreyko, and myself, were both successfully pulled all the way into the story telling and commanding emotional tapestry which is this Wonder Woman film. I think a lot of people were less strongly affected. And there are reasons to take points off for some bits of the movie, I would rework quite a few things about the villains given the opportunity. But if this movie does suck you in, all the way, you'll be just gushing like Marc and myself. It's very early to say for sure, but I want to say that this movie finds a home in my all time top ten movies. I think in order to be quite that powerful though, it needs to interact with the psychology of the viewer in a way that likely won't be quite as compelling for many. Still a good film for all, but I think the few like Marc and myself are part of a smaller demographic who are just giddy about this movie, and the way it speaks very intimately with our sense of cynicism and hope.

    This movie, was great!!!
    The 1st act was a tiny bit slow because of the exposition, but it gave great introduction to the characters and the conflict.
    The 2nd act just sucked me into the story and was perfectly paced with excellent character development, great action, and smart story progress.
    The 3rd act was a little bit bloated with the overtop fight between Wonder Woman and Aries, but it also had the great emotional pay off, of Steve dying.
    I personally enjoyed the ideological divide of Wonder Woman and Aries, and how wonder woman was conflicted between having hope for men or giving up on them.
    If they would of had a clear ideological divide in Batman v Superman, and a 3rd act that was emotionally charged like they had in this movie then it would've been way better.
    I think Warner Bros learned from their mistakes and fixed the problems that stifled BvS.
    If I were to nitpick things, i would say that the "surprise" of Wonder Woman being the weapon that would defeat aries and not her actual sword, wasn't really a surprise at all.
    Also Aires being a old British dude really took me outta the movie at moments, but luckily he wasn't doing much action before he had his armor. The 3rd act final action scene was sorta bland, but atleast it was emotionally charged so the investment in the characters kept me engaged.
    If I were to rate this movie myself id give it a 87%, or a 4.3 outta 5.

      Das Übermensch Very Cringy and inconsistent. If he can teleport so easily, why didn't he teleport when Diana threw lightning at him? If he was really such a threat to all the other Gods how did a rookie like Wonder Woman kill him?

    Saw the movie last night and loved it! The only thing I'd change is if after the reveal that David Thewlis was Ares, that his body would've turned to fire than turned to a different actor like Manu Bennet for example (who I would've bought as Diana's brother) revealing that Sir Patrick was his host and if he would've mentioned being an outcast that would've made Ares a much better villain in the movie. Other than that, it was perfect!!

    Best part of the movie is when Steve says "you can save the world, I can save today." That to me means he realizes that she is soooooo much more important than he is, but that he knows she can't do everything herself, and knows he needs to teach her that final lesson to become a true hero.

    The part that made me well up with fanboy tears of pure joy and love was when they're in the trenches and Steve says "It's not what we came here to do" and she busts out in the full outfit for the first time on screen and says "No, but it's what I'M going to do." So awesome!!!!!
    And I love the way that the closeups of her climbing that ladder aren't Michael Bay upskirt pervy - they are showing her armour, the lasso, the shield etc. Then the full shot of her striding towards the German line - I'm geeking out again just thinking about this scene!

    The best part of Wonder Woman for me was seeing my 9-year-old daughter hanging off the theater seat in front of her, absolutely enthralled by a superhero movie in a way she's never been for any other movie I've taken her to see.

    I would like to see these 5 things happen going forward with a solo Wonder Woman film series:
    1) Patty writes and directs WW2 as a 2+ hr "R" rated movie with adults in mind, and a second director edits it into a 1.5 hr PG-13 movie for the kids, a shorter and more focused on an action comic book movie. The second director cuts out adult content (character development, erotic, etc.) with minimal reshoots to make it a great PG-13 movie for the kids.
    2)) Diana meets Steve's great nephew, played by Chris Pine with facial hair and/or different haircut, etc. Doesn't know who he is, but eventually has Steve flashbacks, later finding out. A sexual liason between Steve's great nephew and Diana could certainly put it into the "R" rating.
    3) Diana has become far less naive and far more sophisticated in the 70 years since WW1. She is now a secret agent in the style of James Bond. Smart, sophisticated, and classy, albeit without needing to escape some diabolical execution by the evil mastermind. Diana becomes a femme fatale in search of secrets and secret nuclear/WMD sites when the situation warrants it.
    4) Diana has a female love interests to flesh out her comments to Steve on the WW1 boat to London that men were not necessary for pleasure. Maybe her love scenes with other women would be more erotic and numerous, and with men more romantic and special. Would have broad appeal. Personally, I would like her just to display a naturalness to nudity and erotic pleasure.
    5) Her increasing god powers allow her passage to and from Hades (dimension/universe) where she can meet with the lost gods of the past, including her proud father Zeus, and maybe eventually bring her aunt back to Themyscira. Possibly this should be better saved for Wonder Woman 3 or beyond.
    Hopefully, Wonder Woman continues to develop into a sophisticated mythological saga for adults melding the real world with fantasy and maybe science fiction later on with an increasing gray area between black and white, right and wrong, that is thought provoking as well as entertaining. Additionally, the whole comic book super hero theme can be kept to a parallel PG-13 universe.
