      @nirunk Před 7 lety +2

      Haha, yes but characters die all the time in comics. Doesn't stop them from coming back though. And this is the DC universe... so it's not completely out of the question.

    • @nirunk
      @nirunk Před 7 lety +13

      I get what you're saying but it's just an opinion. He's died and come back before. And besides, his character can still make an appearance without literally coming back from the dead (like a dream sequence). Either way, it's not unheard-of for a character to come back in one way or another (especially with DC). Personally, I just liked Pine's take on the character.

    • @Metaldjwill2
      @Metaldjwill2 Před 7 lety +9

      Was great in the character, I was puzzled why no british accent? But if he went down in a plane full of lethal gas, I dont see him surviving. Only in flashbacks

    • @nirunk
      @nirunk Před 7 lety +6

      That's a good point. I thought it was weird that the movie was set in London but I didn't even think about his lack of a British accent. Weird indeed.
      Yeah, I was thinking flashback too. But then again, he's been brought back to life by Aphrodite before so who knows. I definitely think flashbacks are more likely in the DCEU though.

    • @Metaldjwill2
      @Metaldjwill2 Před 7 lety +1

      Well the movie shifts her origins in the world to fight in WW 1 vs WW 2. Which is explained ( review articles) and it does work well with a "fish out of water" character during that specific era/time frame.

  • @ZiggyStyley
    @ZiggyStyley Před 7 lety +79

    I think Steve Trevor calling Wonder Woman his secretary is a reference to the original justice league comics, where Wonder Woman was originally the secretary of the team not an actual Leaguer. The fact that Diana as a child is wearing the arm bands even though her mother has no intention in training her to be a warrior may suggest that they restrain her from a greater well of power like in the new 52 comics. And I may have seen Herme's Helmet (The one that grants Jay Garrick his powers in the new 52 Earth-2 comic) in the tower, but that could be wrong.

      He probably means it's sharp enough to split an atom. Wonder Woman did that with Superman once in the Superman/Wonder Woman comics.
      They were trapped, Superman asked her "Your sword is sharp enough to split an atom?" she said "Yes, but I wouldn't be able to see it" then Superman grabbed her hand and said "I can, I'll guide you" after which they split the atom causing an atomic explosion almost killing Superman because he absorbed all the blast to protect WW, WW was unharmed because of that. Those two were truly one of the best couples in comics, too bad Superman eventually died.

    • @Kevinschart
      @Kevinschart Před 7 lety +1

      i agree...you get fatigued from watching them punch each other across the city. It felt like every fight scene in Man of Steel and BvS. They need to find a way to make the characters have more weight during the fight. Without it you really don't feel the stakes of a fight to the death. When Thor and Hulk fight they keep the action in on place....
      Said differently if Wonder Woman punches a human, by all means make him fly into the next county. but if she punches another god, give the god at least some ability to absorb the hit.

    • @ThreadBomb

      These movies all seem to have the same problem. They end with a lot of "awesome" spectacle which is mentally and emotionally meaningless. It would be better to start with a serious dialog between hero and villain, and then base the fight on that.

    License Plate on the Wayne Enterprises Armored Car was JL-828-VZM. The JL is a foreshadowing for later this November for The Justice League. I did some research and I could only find Detective Comics Volume 828 which was titled "Sharkbite" and features only Batman, Alfred, and the Riddler so I'm not sure why they put 828. It could be a reference to Superman Issue 82, Vol 2, which is the issue where Superman comes back to life. It's a little crazy, but hey, this is the DCEU!

    Great video. There's another Superman nod that I enjoyed just before the alley scene, where Diana has trouble getting through the revolving door. I heard your wife mention it on the podcast as a "bumbling" moment, but as a Superman fan, I immediately recognized the nod and got a bit of a chuckle.

  • @pigmiwarriorentertainment274

    You didn't mention the revolving door scene was a reference to Superman (1978) too but maybe you knew that & didn't talk about it. She used the Gotchagirl in the film too, it made me smile. Was that super-cocaine a reference to something?

      I think the much bigger problem is that, if Ares looked exactly the same in the flashback as he does now, why didn't someone draw Diana a picture, or at least give her a description of him? Seeing as her whole job was to find him and kill him I think knowing what he looks like would be pretty useful...

      Liam Egan I doubt that Diana's mom would've known what Ares physical form looked like. As Gods tend to change their physical forms all the time in mythology. Plus it's been thousands of years since Ares overthrew the Gods. And also because he wore a fucking helmet for most of his days in Olympus lol. So they probably never saw his face. And their only source to find Ares is in the heart of the battle where the war is the most strongest.

      I saw this film last night and honestly, I thought it was fairly average. Chris Pine and Gal Gadot were great, but I thought the script wasn't that good. As stated in the video there were SO many bits that were just like the first Captain America movie, and I thought the whole thing with Ares was just a bit anti-climactic and predictable. Usually in movies like this the CGI is seamless, but here you could visibly see the changes between the real bits and the CGI. On that note I feel like they also overdid the use of slow motion (just like the new pirates of the Caribbean movie).
      There were also so many little bits that didn't make sense and had me and my mate crying with laughter throughout the film (which were not meant to be funny). Such as
      SPOILERS AHEAD
      What on earth were the amazons doing on that island for the last few thousand years since the gods died? Were they just playing with horses and frolicking in the fields because they have absolutely no technological advancements.
      When Diana tells her mother they should help in the war her mother tells her she is not an amazon and therefore has no say (paraphrasing), and she doesn't question that at all.
      When Diana and Steve go off on the boat how are they getting to London? Steve has just said that he has no idea where they are and how are they going to get across the sea in such a tiny boat? Also they both go to sleep together. Do boats magically steer themselves?
      Steve is wearing a German uniform is he not? How then did he just sail a boat down the Thames without getting stopped? And on that note how were four German agents in London that easily?
      When Diana goes over the trench she gets her shield out to protect herself. That shield is tiny. Since it is stated that every inch of no mans land is covered in guns and she is not bullet proof she must've been hit (this is just lazy script writing for me, convenience annoys me, more on that later). Steve started following right behind Diana, how didn't one of the thousands of guns hit him, especially bullets that went passed her. Same goes for the rest of the army.
      We've seen Diana jump across a load of trenches, she can easily jump into that clock tower.
      Conveniently find a field of cars, and Diana conveniently runs into a woman with the exact same dress size as her.
      Diana breaks into a camp, kills four guards and their general and no one notices or comes to investigate? And then Steve and the others all come straight in too, with no hassle?
      Diana leaves sword on the roof and Ares waits for her to go get it then come back down. How did that play out, "just give me a second okay?".
      After Ares is killed it is suddenly daytime when it was pitch black before.
      Is no one in Britain questioning where one of the leading members of their government has gone, or are they just too swept up in celebrating the war.
      Just a few things that I can remember. Once I noticed the first few I couldn't help but notice the rest. There were some genuinely funny moments in it and I'm glad we've now gotten a female lead in a superhero movie (I am not counting elektra or catwoman, they didn't happen). But overall I thought it was quite average. I feel like DC still don't really know what they're doing, but it's a step in the right direction. If anyone has read this far I'd be interested to hear why you liked the film or if you agree with any of my points (I know a lot of them are picky). Sorry also if this is an incoherent pile of words, I am quite tired right now.

    • @uglyguy2519
      @uglyguy2519 Před 7 lety +1

      I found it to be pretty much everything the critics said. A very good film, with great performances from Gadot and Pine (possibly Pine's best performance indeed) and humour added at the right times in non forced ways. Not to mention that it does manage to be "not just a good superhero movie, but also a good movie". The design of Themyscira (no idea how to spell that) was breathtaking, and I'm pretty sure I'd been saying that even if I weren't a student of architecture. Such a nice colorful break from the darkness and greyness of the rest of the DCEU and even of this film.
      However, also as mentioned by critics, the final battle is pretty much just a very familiar explosion of shiny CGI, not much more than that. Just a bunch of things exploding all the time and you keep waiting for the obvious moment when the hero will gather forces to win out of nowhere. Though I have to give them points for the villain's design and... uh... how cool it is when the transition to said design happens. The CGI could indeed have gone a lot smoother many times, like that opening shot of Earth zooming into the Louvre and even the Themyscira backgrounds when you look at them for too long, which the movie pretty much demands that you do.

      Ethan Lamb *SPOILERS*
      The ball clearly takes place at night, but when Diana leaves it to go after Lunderdoff and ends up finding the village bombarded, it's suddenly day again, just like when she and the rest of the team came to it in the first time. But right as they turned right there was Lunderdoff's military base, surrounded by the darkest of all nights. Then it's day again after Ares is defeated like you mentioned.
      You might be interested in a CZcams channel called Cinemasins. They look for flaws ("sins") like the ones you mentioned in every movie: plot holes, continuity errors, incoherent actions, stupid plot points and characters, overly convenient things, forced exposition... AND lack of lap dances! They've made videos for all MCU and DCEU movies so far, for example.

    • @ethanlamb3630
      @ethanlamb3630 Před 7 lety +1

      I was also quite fed up of the completely overdone "look how bad all of these humans are" bit that seems to be done by many films these days, only to end with the main character saying something along the lines of "they may have some bad, but they have so much good in them". This film seemed to follow a lot of similar tropes. I know most superhero movies aren't exactly known for their groundbreaking storytelling, but this one seemed to copy more things than usual.
      Also was it not explained in the movie why Ares couldn't just kill all the people himself, or was I too busy laughing at something else? And let's be honest for second, Ludendorff was basically doing cocaine throughout that movie, snorting (I know it was a gas but still) and becoming stronger and more aggressive.
      I was a big fan of Chris Pine's performance, but the reason for his character being with the British seemed quite flimsy as there were no other americans about (other than chief). I'm assuming that DC wanted an American in one of the lead roles, but I thought they could've done better with that. Since in the comics his character was in the second world war I assume it worked better there.
      Haha I love cinema sins, I can't wait for some of his videos on this summers movies.

    • @uglyguy2519
      @uglyguy2519 Před 7 lety

      Ethan Lamb I think Ares would rather have mankind kill each other, since all he really wanted was for everyone to see how flawed they were. That's why he wanted the armistice to happen, for example: because he knew mankind wouldn't respect it and kill each other anyway.
      What threw me off was him killing the rest of Olympus. That was a waste of so many characters, and I can't help but think that the only reason why they did it was to prevent people from asking "Why aren't the gods helping now?" in future DCEU films. And what was the point? If Ares' goal was to prove to the other gods that mankind wasn't perfect but they didn't believe him, then why would that lead him to kill the gods and not mankind themselves like you said? It makes no sense. And even considering he's the god of war, he actually killed everyone else singlehandedly, including Athena (who always defeats him) and Zeus (who's way more powerful than him, especially considering he was the last on to die, since Ares should've been weaker after killing everyone else)?
      But most of all, apparently Artemis is alive? She's among the Amazons in the film, but that is completely glossed over like it means nothing, like she's just another common Amazon or an Amazon named after the goddess, which would be just misleading. And then Ares summons Zeus' lighting bolt out of nowhere - he actually killed all the gods AND kept their weapons just like Kratos, didn't he? They should at least have tried to explain that.

    I saw the movie tonight and thought it was amazing. :) I think the glasses joke was a reference to Diana Prince wearing glasses in the comics and Steve Trevor never recognizing her as Wonder Woman or paying any attention to her. Obviously, as Etta points out, the glasses don't make her any less beautiful.

    It definitely deserves all the hype that it's getting. Gonna watch it a second and third time. A comic book movie classic for me

      I remember how much hate him and gal gadot received when the announcement happened in 2013. They both truly deserve kudos.

      True, respect given where respect earned, and Gal really got in shape for the role

    That moment when Ares, in human clothes, just go up in the air totally still, and just stay there, with only his cout trembleling, reminded me of Superman in both BVS and MOS! Like in that scene where Ares makes her see his vision of the world with no humans is almost equal to the moment where Zod is in Supermans head... the "drownig in the skulls" thing!
