IT IS NOT GUNS...
"The message from the American government/justice system to its people is that it does not value humans' intrinsic value or dignity. Americans have launched a war on human dignity."
> We are the only Western/1st world/"Christian" country that still practices Capital Punishment, even though many people on death row are exonerated, and even though many people were exonerated after states killed them.
> We are the only Western/1st world/"Christian" country that doesn't guarantee healthcare/mental health.
> We are the only country that parades mug-shots on the news like it's nothing, even when these people have not been convicted of a crime yet. If it bleeds it leads. We uphold free speech over privacy. Innocent until proven guilty is a myth in our society. It only applies in a very specific situation in trials and only in front of the jury. NB. only 3-5% of all cases make it to jury trials.
> We are the only country that incarcerates more than a 1/4 of the entire world's prison population.
> We are the only country that publicly sanctioned torture as a tool to gain information that didn't get us any information and violated human rights. Read the summary of the 6,000-page report of Senate Intelligence Committee Report on Torture.
> We are the country with the highest number of confirmed "foreigners" kills on foreign sovereign land without their day in court; drone strikes.
> We are the only country that imprisoned people for 20 years without charges, who we tortured and then found out that they were innocent; GTMO.
"If a government does not value people or human dignity, then its people won't value each other."

One hallmark of moral outrage is, that expressing it feels so good.
Many brain imaging studies have shown that when we punish bad or unfair behavior, you see activation in the striatum, which is a brain area that we know to be involved in signaling rewards, it's receiving inputs from the dopamine system.
Our dissatisfaction with ourselves increases our desire to punish bad or unfair behavior.
So we punish wrongdoers to feel better. look-up "Schadenfreude".
The punishment should fit the crime, not here, not in America. We send people to prison without any programs, education, or treatment for 3x to 6 times longer than any other country on earth.
Our dislike of being in a situation of disadvantageous inequality by thinking that wrongdoers got one over us, or that they gained something by their wrongdoing and we didn't is childish and hypocritical.
Many Americans prefer to punish without impunity regardless of the massive economic and social cost of incarceration. Regardless that it has been proven that prison increases crime and recidivism.
In America, because we are all depressed, we punish more people (incarcerate) than any country in the world. America has more people in prison/jail (2.2 million) than all the countries of Europe and Africa combined (1.9 million).
We do not count the 4.4 million on parole or probation.
If prison is a deterrence then we should be the safest country on earth, but we are not, because it isn't. The more we send people to prison, the more we become worse off, the more we become depressed, the more we send people to prison.
Prisons are criminogenic. While other countries punish by long hours of community service and severe fines and restitution to the victims, we neglect victims ($0) and spend $200,000 or more per inmate.
Prison is vengeance. Prison is financial, emotional, and psychological torture, not only for the inmate but, for their families. We call the punishment that we give out to their families "collateral damage," and we are all ok with that.
We moved from corporal punishment to prisons thinking it was more humane.
Our thought is, throw them in jail with a bible long enough and their conscience will convict them. Well, that didn't work.
Bring back corporal punishment, flogging, and whipping (sarcasm). Physical punishment is far better than emotional and psychological torture.
We break people in prison and take away their hopes and dreams of contributing back to their society. We discard them. We warehouse them and box the problem for a later time. Out of sight, out of mind.
From the 1800s to the 1960s, Punishment was temporary. People were welcomed back to their community. People were accepted and forgiven. We were tough on crime but not criminals.
Today, a felon or a violent offender is branded for life in our communities and shunned by all.
More than 40% of American males are arrested before the age of 23.
Almost 30% of all Americans have a criminal record.
We used to let people out of prison on weekends to visit their families: crime went down, recidivism went down. Then one inmate (Willie Horton), just one, does not come back and kills someone and we shut the whole thing down: crime goes up, recidivism goes up.
Less incarceration decreases crime and recidivism.
That's counterintuitive you say, or is it that your intuition is faulty.
Study after study after study.
If you want less traffic, decrease the number of lanes not increase them.
If you want to protect children from peanut allergies, give them all peanuts when they are young.
If you want less crime, send fewer people to prison for less time, invest in them and their futures, and give them hope of becoming active and contributing members of their communities.
Look at Canada, Germany, Norway, Finland, Australia, Sweden ... actually any country really. Look at their incarceration rates vs. their crime rates. See, these other countries have the same crime rates as America or even higher (not homicide) but have lower incarceration rates than America; weird?!
No other country but America has this rate of incarceration even when having lower rates of crime than most countries.
No other country has this high rate of recidivism.
And No other country shares this attitude toward criminals and ex-criminals as Americans. They invest in people's future, especially those who are "faulty." By definition, you should try to fix what's broken, fix those who need it the most, help those who falter and help those who can't help themselves.
If you cannot help those who are at the bottom, then what good of a country are you?
See, these other countries had high rates of recidivism too, but it went down when they decarcerated.
Americans are addicted to outrage because it is much more comforting than addressing our culpability and actively changing it. But it's more than that.
It's the "I can't have nice things, so neither can you" attitude.
It's the difference between truly wanting equal and wanting others to feel as miserable as you do because achieving that endpoint is not the goal -- it's the hit of feel-good chemistry.
Couple that with society's lucrative reward points for victim status (as long as the "right" people are "doing" it to them) and it's a never-ending cycle that needs to be chased and reinforced.
Also, Americans need month-long vacation shutdowns like European and South American countries. It might make us less cranky.
It was the Americans who wrote the German constitution after WW2. The first line reads "Human dignity is inviolable."
There are far superior, more cost-effective ways to punish other than prison. America is the most punitive country on earth.
America's criminal justice system is neither fair nor just by any measure. We hate wrongdoers as if they are aliens, not humans, sub-humans. We give up on people, no second chances.
The land of the incarcerated and the home of the cowards.

I think it’s mental health bullying etc.. If anything I don’t understand why we are arming teachers and staff at schools and improving the terrible mental health services in the US and nipping this in the bud.
mental health problems exist all over the world....the rest of the world learned that giving easy access to guns isn't a good mix
Till we just forget their names in the media and ONLY talk about the victims names, we'll always have people trying to out do each others disrespect for others lives.
Boy calling it a problem is real understatement!
What is wrong with this planet? Why can't we live as one? How much further do we have to go until we all realize we're different and that's what makes us great.
People suck. They have a need to push people too far. The ignorant will never learn.
This is a US problem... No a planetary one...
I truly agree with you; but sadly there will always be people that will do this be it that they think they’re better because of religion, race, uprising, or because they’re constantly being bullied act school. I’m sad that I’m truth the only thing we can do is hope that in time people will mellow out.
But your differences have bring strength to the whole. We don't live in StarTrek.
That's not how individuality works, people have different desire and those who has similar are being judge by their smallest flaw. America is the only country that has that problem due to their lack of common sense, they take independence to literally.
There's no problem. It's just that US, and a majority of citizens don't want to ban "freedom."
The US has a culture of fear and a culture that values violence. There are a lot of frustrated people who cannot cope with their emotions or cannot find healthy solutions to their internal issues. Mix that with the culture and an easy access to weaponry to take out your resentment to the world and you've got this mess.
Normalize safety without arming yourself. Make guns difficult to purchase. Normalize expressing your feelings and getting therapy and seeking help from professionals instead of online outlets. Invest in school/community resources that help kids find their interests and feel accepted.
Meanwhile they talk about gun safety but do nothing to achieve such safety, such as reforming their laws on regulation, ownership and carrying.
Making it harder to get guns makes it harder for the people who do want to defend themselves. It would also open the way to banning guns entirely which is a perfect way for the government to overstep its bounds. I do agree with your first part though. It is interesting how the first thing to say after “there’s a lot of issues with mental health in America. Let’s ignore the issue altogether and ban guns”

Guys I’m a strong conservative but this whole gun and children situation gets me really going, it’s a damn shame instead of doing something about guns we instead equipe schools with gun protected doors and walls and even have kids doing school shooting drills. Our leaders in office are not fixing the problem rather patching it. It embarrasses me calling myself an American.
Honestly, Manuel the Democrats have been fighting guns and the fearful conservative bandaid and child-traumatizing solutions you mention for many decades. I would say that whenever conservatives have some power (including like now in Congress, Supreme Court, and in states) it IS embarassing what happens. Most of all, it should be embarassing right now to say you are a conservative. I hope you will join the majority of Americans who oppose the insanity of the GOP. And you are aware of the fact that Republicans actually spend MORE (are more "liberal" with our tax money, supporting the wealthiest)? Democrats traditionally are more "conservative" when it comes to spending than Republicans are. Dems decrease the deficite and Repubs increase it and then they hypocritically make a big deal of it's size AFTER they leave office. I have seen them do that since I began watching in the 1960's. In other words, if you are "conservative" because of economics, don't be a Republican.
Guns? Liberal policies have kicked fathers and Churches to the curb. Where else do you build a persons soul and value system if not these two institutions? Add to this abortion on demand up to 9 months and value for life has become meaningless. Our culture is rotting, big liberal governments are the problem.

Growing up in the 80’s, none of us had gun safes. Everything was in a wooden cabinet with a key and readily accessible. @@reidflemingworldstoughestm1394 How many times do your children have to die ??
They claim to be protecting their children as an excuse to play fighting man with guns
@@reidflemingworldstoughestm1394 i have never heard stories of people in america that uses their guns for something good. NEVER. so whats the point of owning them? americans are paranoid because of the laws the Government created. so naturally they need a gun to "protect" themselves. USA is a paranoid country with paranoid people. they dont see the problem for some reason. and on top of that they love the NRA lobbyist money. so nothing will change anyway.

Answer the question,
When have you ever actually protected anyone with a gun?
Children are dying so you can live a fantasy
conservative solution: more guns!
More guns less shootings.i wanna be able to carry a Thompson in public.that would be a great country.
I will never apologize for defending my natural rights to firearms.
No, conservatives solution would be less Democrats.
All I want is stricter restrictions
dem solution: i'll let everyone but myself raise my kids and then cry when it backfires.
Its Time To End The Second Ammendment Right To Own Weapon
The Americans in these comments are confusing...are they okay with school shootings/guns or are they not
I mean I like guns but I hate mass shootings and unnessary killings due to a surging mental health crisis in my country
America is busy destroying cntries while in merica😆😆😆😆
The right of the people to own and bear arms shall not be infringed.
No one is threatening the right to bear arms - only assault weapons. You got no discretion at all?
It can be limited though
But do those arms include military style assault rifles,Luke?
@@jeromewade4110 Yes.
You people want to add new lines to fit your ideas all based on fear.
I'm not even american, but i've seen what it does when only the rich and powerful have weapons.
@@Damesanglante SINCE WHEN have civilians needed military guns,Phil?
All that bullying or over lbearing teachers parents putting the pressure on their kids
Thats the reason for all the mass shootings in america mostly if les guns and more gun laws were prevalent
It would mean no shootings
Sure, and chalk is cheese. It's the guns. Otherwise, we'd have lesser deaths and more confrontation (mostly positive).
America, your chickens have come home to roost'
They should ban assault weapons, high capacity magazines!
Guess what, criminals will be the only ones with them if that happens
You do realize Ban only makes three times the sale of the said item
🤡
Oh yeah? Ever heard of martial law?
Your loved ones will resent you when it counts
Might as well send my kids to London smh this is so sad and for everyone saying that oh the democratic or repulican party is the reason stop putting your beliefs into play LOOK AT HOW LONG THIS HAS BEEN GOING ON. Thank you Biden.
Everyone should wake up , everyone is crap and that's what happens. Keep living in Lala land
Base 😂😂😂
the problem is not only the availability of guns but also how the school handles the students
You have laws right now about gun control and cities don’t in force them. For example, the Red Flag law in Chicago. This law could have been use to prevent this evil man from owning a firearm. Instead we keep talking about what can be done. We keep going round and round in circles period!!
You do realize the illegal arms trade is a thing right? It makes any gun law irrelevant.
No law could have prevented that evil man from owning a firearm. Proving that someone is mentally ill or dangerous legally is no easy thing. The only time that tends to be possible is when the person has an actual history of violence.
You have to make guns illegal
now there is a new law in the US that you dont need a permit to carry a gun in half of the states in the US.
