  • Despite the uproar over mass shootings like the one at a school in Uvalde, Texas and new gun legislation, another mass shooting rocked the United States this week. CBS News producer Tre’Vaughn Howard explores why mass shootings occur much more frequently in America than in other countries.

      IT IS NOT GUNS...
"The message from the American government/justice system to its people is that it does not value humans' intrinsic value or dignity. Americans have launched a war on human dignity."
      > We are the only Western/1st world/"Christian" country that still practices Capital Punishment, even though many people on death row are exonerated, and even though many people were exonerated after states killed them.
      > We are the only Western/1st world/"Christian" country that doesn't guarantee healthcare/mental health.
      > We are the only country that parades mug-shots on the news like it's nothing, even when these people have not been convicted of a crime yet. If it bleeds it leads. We uphold free speech over privacy. Innocent until proven guilty is a myth in our society. It only applies in a very specific situation in trials and only in front of the jury. NB. only 3-5% of all cases make it to jury trials.
      > We are the only country that incarcerates more than a 1/4 of the entire world's prison population.
      > We are the only country that publicly sanctioned torture as a tool to gain information that didn't get us any information and violated human rights. Read the summary of the 6,000-page report of Senate Intelligence Committee Report on Torture.
      > We are the country with the highest number of confirmed "foreigners" kills on foreign sovereign land without their day in court; drone strikes.
      > We are the only country that imprisoned people for 20 years without charges, who we tortured and then found out that they were innocent; GTMO.
"If a government does not value people or human dignity, then its people won't value each other."
      >>

One hallmark of moral outrage is, that expressing it feels so good.
Many brain imaging studies have shown that when we punish bad or unfair behavior, you see activation in the striatum, which is a brain area that we know to be involved in signaling rewards, it's receiving inputs from the dopamine system.
Our dissatisfaction with ourselves increases our desire to punish bad or unfair behavior.
So we punish wrongdoers to feel better. look-up "Schadenfreude".
The punishment should fit the crime, not here, not in America. We send people to prison without any programs, education, or treatment for 3x to 6 times longer than any other country on earth.
Our dislike of being in a situation of disadvantageous inequality by thinking that wrongdoers got one over us, or that they gained something by their wrongdoing and we didn't is childish and hypocritical.
Many Americans prefer to punish without impunity regardless of the massive economic and social cost of incarceration. Regardless that it has been proven that prison increases crime and recidivism.
In America, because we are all depressed, we punish more people (incarcerate) than any country in the world. America has more people in prison/jail (2.2 million) than all the countries of Europe and Africa combined (1.9 million).
We do not count the 4.4 million on parole or probation.
If prison is a deterrence then we should be the safest country on earth, but we are not, because it isn't. The more we send people to prison, the more we become worse off, the more we become depressed, the more we send people to prison.
Prisons are criminogenic. While other countries punish by long hours of community service and severe fines and restitution to the victims, we neglect victims ($0) and spend $200,000 or more per inmate.
Prison is vengeance. Prison is financial, emotional, and psychological torture, not only for the inmate but, for their families. We call the punishment that we give out to their families "collateral damage," and we are all ok with that.
We moved from corporal punishment to prisons thinking it was more humane.
Our thought is, throw them in jail with a bible long enough and their conscience will convict them. Well, that didn't work.
Bring back corporal punishment, flogging, and whipping (sarcasm). Physical punishment is far better than emotional and psychological torture.
We break people in prison and take away their hopes and dreams of contributing back to their society. We discard them. We warehouse them and box the problem for a later time. Out of sight, out of mind.
From the 1800s to the 1960s, Punishment was temporary. People were welcomed back to their community. People were accepted and forgiven. We were tough on crime but not criminals.
Today, a felon or a violent offender is branded for life in our communities and shunned by all.
More than 40% of American males are arrested before the age of 23.
Almost 30% of all Americans have a criminal record.
We used to let people out of prison on weekends to visit their families: crime went down, recidivism went down. Then one inmate (Willie Horton), just one, does not come back and kills someone and we shut the whole thing down: crime goes up, recidivism goes up.
Less incarceration decreases crime and recidivism.
That's counterintuitive you say, or is it that your intuition is faulty.
      Study after study after study.
If you want less traffic, decrease the number of lanes not increase them.
If you want to protect children from peanut allergies, give them all peanuts when they are young.
If you want less crime, send fewer people to prison for less time, invest in them and their futures, and give them hope of becoming active and contributing members of their communities.
Look at Canada, Germany, Norway, Finland, Australia, Sweden ... actually any country really. Look at their incarceration rates vs. their crime rates. See, these other countries have the same crime rates as America or even higher (not homicide) but have lower incarceration rates than America; weird?!
No other country but America has this rate of incarceration even when having lower rates of crime than most countries.
No other country has this high rate of recidivism.
And No other country shares this attitude toward criminals and ex-criminals as Americans. They invest in people's future, especially those who are "faulty." By definition, you should try to fix what's broken, fix those who need it the most, help those who falter and help those who can't help themselves.
If you cannot help those who are at the bottom, then what good of a country are you?
See, these other countries had high rates of recidivism too, but it went down when they decarcerated.
Americans are addicted to outrage because it is much more comforting than addressing our culpability and actively changing it. But it's more than that.
It's the "I can't have nice things, so neither can you" attitude.
It's the difference between truly wanting equal and wanting others to feel as miserable as you do because achieving that endpoint is not the goal -- it's the hit of feel-good chemistry.
Couple that with society's lucrative reward points for victim status (as long as the "right" people are "doing" it to them) and it's a never-ending cycle that needs to be chased and reinforced.
Also, Americans need month-long vacation shutdowns like European and South American countries. It might make us less cranky.
It was the Americans who wrote the German constitution after WW2. The first line reads "Human dignity is inviolable."
There are far superior, more cost-effective ways to punish other than prison. America is the most punitive country on earth.
America's criminal justice system is neither fair nor just by any measure. We hate wrongdoers as if they are aliens, not humans, sub-humans. We give up on people, no second chances.
The land of the incarcerated and the home of the cowards.

I would say that whenever conservatives have some power (including like now in Congress, Supreme Court, and in states) it IS embarassing what happens. Most of all, it should be embarassing right now to say you are a conservative. I hope you will join the majority of Americans who oppose the insanity of the GOP. And you are aware of the fact that Republicans actually spend MORE (are more "liberal" with our tax money, supporting the wealthiest)? Democrats traditionally are more "conservative" when it comes to spending than Republicans are. Dems decrease the deficite and Repubs increase it and then they hypocritically make a big deal of it's size AFTER they leave office. I have seen them do that since I began watching in the 1960's. The thought of taking a shotgun and lighting up the school never crossed our minds. The guns were there but the thought of a shooting never entered anyone’s mind. Fast forward to generation me, I’m special, Barney, The Care Bears, helicopter parents, and play dates, and we smack into Columbine. We created a mentally and emotionally weak bunch of kids where everyone gets a trophy and everyone makes the team.

In my honest opinion this is just dissapointing, the fact that society has degraded so much that school shootings have now become increasingly numerous and lethal is testimony to how broken the school system and society has become. School shooters are not born, never, they are made, their environment and mental state is what usually leads to shootings. People are using jobs like teachers and principles to either bully or groom children, and bullying has gotten way worse due to the internet. If these people actually got therapy or help from their parents and or freinds then maybe this would be a much more rare occurrence.

You have laws right now about gun control and cities don’t in force them. For example, the Red Flag law in Chicago. This law could have been use to prevent this evil man from owning a firearm. Instead we keep talking about what can be done. We keep going round and round in circles period!!

You do realize the illegal arms trade is a thing right? It makes any gun law irrelevant.

No law could have prevented that evil man from owning a firearm. Proving that someone is mentally ill or dangerous legally is no easy thing. The only time that tends to be possible is when the person has an actual history of violence.
