  • Nice little clip to commemorate the Royal visit to Iceland in 1990. Iv'e added subtitles but the visit to Krísuvík hot spring area took an hour longer than previously planned due to their interest in the very hot area that teased them a bit, and demonstrated how unpredictable our nature is
The Krísuvík hot springs are not far away from the Geldingadalir volcano and it's a popular tourist destination only 15 minutes from Reykjavik.

It all feels very strange right now, and there's a subdued atmosphere across the nation. In an odd sense, we've just lost our mother: regardless of your nationality, or religion, in times of crisis, it was to our Queen Elizabeth we looked for guidance and support. King Charles has some very big shoes to fill.

She was a remarkable woman who knew the right things to say both publically and privately to put people at ease. There aren't many world leaders over the last 7 decades who haven't deferred to Her Majesty at one time or another.

Thanks for finding this. Tbh I am quite emotional today. I feel like a part of my family has died. She was a great figurehead and steered us through some tricky waters. This has been a very strange year domestically for us. It's nice that other countries feel the loss as we do. The Queen touched everyone's heart.

Thankyou so much for uploading this video Gylfi. It was a reminder of how happy the Queen and Prince Philip were together, and it was lovely to see them laughing with your lovely President, Vigdis Finnbogadóttir, as they visited those hot springs. It is good to be reminded of happier times.
Thankyou too for your condolences. It means a lot.

Very, very many thanks for that - I was touched to hear and see that the late Queen and Duke found the hot spring area so fascinating as the main reason for my visits to Iceland has always been geology. I visited Krisuvik itself twice last year - seems to have changed a lot since 1990 - and also walked around on the Solheimajokull glacier. I'm thinking of making another visit to Iceland at the end of this month but will have to do some money sums this weekend first!
You may know that the Duke of Edinburgh founded the young people's adventuring award scheme named after him here in the UK, so I'm not surprised he found Iceland fascinating. I wonder if he ever got near one of your glaciers? He would always make a point of awarding the D of E Gold awards himself to successful finishers. I managed a Bronze back in 1969.
Your Head of State must have been the redoubtable Vigdis Finnbogadottir, elected at a time when female Heads of State were a lot less commonplace than now. I remember the stir her election caused in the UK's newspapers and other media.

Yes it was Vigdís and she's still with us :) but it's not much to be found about the Duke's visits, but here is a clip though that you might like from 1964 :) and greetings from iceland czcams.com/video/2fJ8ZtuuvNs/video.html

As a Brit, can’t tell you how pleased I am that you did this.
We’re hearing on our radio stations all the stories of fellow Brits who are sharing their stories when they had their opportunity to meet Queen Elizabeth, but to see her look genuinely interested in Iceland’s geological activity is nothing short of extremely admirable.
Have been an avid geeky viewer of your channel alongside GeologyHub for some time!

It's Saturday morning now, and that cheered us up a lot over the breakfast table. The sequence with the umbrella is delightful, and both of them are evidently having great fun, too. They were wonderful together, and we were so blessed to have had her as Queen for so long. Good memories are a big help at times like this.

It was a shock. Certain things throughout the day, did make me think it was happening. News readers wearing black, TV special on the queen; and policians getting urgent notes. The news of her family rushing to her side on doctor's orders.... I hoped it wasn't happening. She's not been doing well since Philip passed away.

The Queen was a plucky woman to try some of the things she did....Too bad she didn’t get a chance to ride one of the Icelandic horses...but I doubt she would have been allowed. Could be reasons why she only came once.... She did visit many times here in Nova Scotia. She was greatly admired here in Canada and will be greatly missed I am sure. Thanks for this very interesting piece of history.
