In 2017, Philip K. Dick’s Electric Dreams is shining a light on some of the prolific science fiction author’s lesser-known short stories, and the Amazon anthology series is the latest in a long line of Philip K. Dick adaptations. When it comes to Philip K. Dick adaptations, works based off of his Philip K. Dick novels have become stone cold classics like Blade Runner, based on Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?, A Scanner Darkly, and The Man in the High Castle TV show. When it comes to the short stories of PKD, the track record is a lot more mixed. That’s because, as an author, Philip K. Dick is an idea man first and foremost. His work is filled with brilliant concepts, but it takes more than that to make an awesome sci fi movie. It’s up to talented directors to fill in the gaps where Dick is lacking, namely character and action, and add their own unique strengths to Dick’s own genius.
The 1990 Total Recall movie by Paul Verhoeven is based off Dick’s short story We Can Remember It For You Wholesale. It borrows the premise, but adds a dose of Arnold Schwarzenegger inspired action and spectacle to Dick’s much smaller story. Total Recall 1990 is an all time action movie classic, but a lot of that comes from the influence of Robocop director Verhoeven. He turned his film into a rollicking war movie, far from the simple thought experiment of the original story. Just like Steven Spielberg did with Minority Report. Based on the Philip K. Dick story The Minority Report, Minority Report takes the intriguing premise from the book and turns it into a taut thriller starring Tom Cruise. As an adaptation, it takes a lot of liberties with the source material, but as a film, it’s pumped full of Spielberg’s trademark human emotion and vivid characters, something that’s never been a strength of Philip K. Dick. PKD strange career and even weirder life has provided the seed for a ton of significant sci-fi, but it takes a rare talent to elevate the original source material above its pulpy origins.

my favorite one is A SCANNER DARKLY.
Really awesome exposition on the brilliant minds of Phillip K. Dick and Stephen Speilberg. Found this searching for how to adapt a short story to a feature length screenplay. I haven't had the fortune of reading any of Dick's works, I just recently found out he was a prolific writer and I will certainly pick up some of his stories. I can see how these may serve aspiring science fiction writers well. Thank you.
And to the question favorite PKD adaption would have to A Scanner Darkly. I havent seen Man in the High Castle or any of Electic Dreams yet.
It’s the most faithful adaptation. And I consider it his most profound book.
10:15 Wooden balls are used b/c the shape & grain are always unique. You really put all your trust on emails?

minority report is one of my favorite movies. i watched it a few days ago
ivan andrade cool story, bro
One of my favorite films, as well.
Do an Altered Carbon video!
so what you folks think of total recall remake (2012) and blade runner 2049 (2017)?
Blade Runner 2049 was great! A bit long, maybe, but I had a lot of fun watching it. :)
did you watch the total recall remake?
Brian Kent Pirrie it was ok. Not bad but not as crazy as the original. But maybe thats because it wasnt as new to me the 2nd time around and the plot twists were stuff from a previous iteration.
The Father Thing... That would rock.
And what about “Blade Runner”?
he forgot to talk about paycheck (2003) next (2007) the adjustment bureau (2011)
Brian Kent Pirrie yep. Completely forgot “Paycheck” was based on Dick’s work. They should do a second video for the forgotten movies.
Androids Dream of Electric Sheep.
you ever read the novel?
Brian Kent Pirrie twice
Thanks for dressing up.
Do more Philip k Dick movies
Philip K Dick is a genius.
Philip K Dick doesnt do character well? Things like Do Androids Dream Of Electric Sheep and A Scanner Darkly are heavily about the characters.
Both are novels, where there's more space for character building. The video talks about short stories
I read and watched A SCANNER DARKLY and it is a relay accurate adaption.
His name is Quaid! Not Quayle! #FacePalm #GoodVideoThough
I've got to admit, you lost me at A.I.. It's never got really emotional to me, it stayed in that Uncanny Valley for the entire run.
It's not motion capture animation.
And "A.I." man, the jude blew it.
I disagree with "Minority report" I think that movie is boring as hell.
