To a lot of American nerds, the name ‘Valerian’ might not mean all the much. But overseas, the French comic book ‘Valerian’ is some of the most important and influential scifi ever made. Everything from ‘Star Wars’ to ‘Independence Day’ owes a debt to ‘Valerian,’ and that’s just scratching the surface of the rich history of French science fiction.
The history of French scifi begins with Jules Verne, the author of classics like ‘20,000 Leagues Under the Sea’ and ‘From the Earth to the Moon.’ From there, French science fiction spilled out into the cinema, with New Wave filmmakers producing classics like Alphaville. But maybe the purest essence of French scifi comes from their comic books, especially Metal Hurlant.
Moebius is just one of the legendary artists and writers who contributed to the groundbreaking comic anthology. Whether you call it Metal Hurlant or Heavy Metal, the American title, the stories inside were beautiful and brutal, and they paved the way for a lot of what we see today. Moebius made a huge impact on the scifi genre, working on everything from ‘Jodorowsky’s Dune’ to ‘Space Jam,’ but ‘Metal Hurlant’ might be his greatest legacy.
Moebius isn’t the only French scifi creator Americans are familiar with. We end our tour with Luc Besson, director of ‘The Professional,’ ‘Nikita,’ ‘The Fifth Element,’ and funnily enough, ‘Valerian.’ It’s the project he’s dreamed of making since he was a kid reading the ‘Valerian’ comics and Metal Hurlant. France has a long tradition of science fiction, and it’s contributed a ton to the genre, so if you’re looking to expand your horizons with a little international flair, ‘Valerian’ might not be a bad bet.

Valerian is what Star Wars is based on. I think Besson has done a great job in making French inspired movies. The Fifth Element was excellent for its outlandish setting and unique storyline, which still holds water today. Valerian looks visually stunning! Although I like that we are getting another countries take on Science Fiction. We tend to always have America, Britain and Japan exposing theirs.

I agree with a lot of what You've written. International Fellowship IS important; personally I think it a Huge Mistake to ALLOW Sci-fi to become Mainstream - Especially merging it with the gratuitous Horror of the "Horror" genre (of Too Many Decades now) - Removes The Intrinsic Preciseness of the Uniquely Inventive Soul, that I Believe, is Uniquely required for Science Fiction. That isn't a limited or narrow-minded approach, but reflects the Fact that one should 'step' Wisely into - often unexplored 'Land' - of Elemental - forces. If you Remember Roy Natty's comment to his inventor - " You Should have made us Better".

I'm really happy you made this video. I grew up with both American and Franco-Belgian comics, and have enjoyed both immensely. So happy to see Moebius mentioned a lot. His work is really something else.
Lastly, I'd recommend everyone into comics to give the Valerian and Laurelin comics a look, they're good fun.

In fact the space opera genre did not disappear at all after the war, in novels and comics in France after the war. Apart from post-apocalyptic, philosophical or political currents, several novels have appeared in the "Rayon fantastique (fantastic department)" and then in the " Fleuve noir "(black river)", "Présence du Futur", "Ailleurs et Demain","opta" editions which have offered hundreds of space operas. Note writers like Nathalie and Charles Hennenberg, Jimmy Guieu, Stephan Wul, Michel Jeury, andré Ruellan/ Kurt Steiner, Gerard Klein, Philippe Curval, Lieutenant Kije, Andrevon / Bruschte, Philippe Curval, Michel Demuth, Francis Carsac and many others!

I remember the Fleuve noir edities and others taking up a whole bookcase in a second-hand bookstore in Antwerp. The cover illustrations alone incites one to buy them.

nope. nope. nope. The publisher that had the rights to the Incal took the director to court. But he lost, simply because Giraud made the Incal and designed the look of the Fifth Element.

As a long time hardcore Star Wars fan I'd like to see a deep dive into the 90s Star Wars novels that were recently removed from canon. Especially Mara Jade, Thrawn, Jacen and Jaina, and the Rogue Squadron.

First, thank you for creating your own separate channel and removing the content from the other. Due to that and the fact that this video is showing massive improvements, I gladly subscribed. This is what should have been done in the beginning to have prevented those first few videos on this channel from being hit with hate. This is excellent content, and is very well delivered! Also beyond ecstatic that there's one single camera angle with this. Easier for editing, also helps keep the focus on the content. We don't need two angles for this type of production, let the content do the speaking and let the personality of the host drive it. The other hosts will fall into place soon enough I'm sure, and I look forward to seeing everyone's improvement as this channel grows. Best of luck!

Please make more videos about franco-belgian comics. I would like to see a video of the five books on Okko. There are five cycles, the first one is "Okko: the cycle of water". This is an amazing story that lacks youtube reviews...
