Paccar MX13 Fuel Issues - Check Valve video by Dr. Paccar

  • A Doctor Paccar Video. The issues is a Paccar MX13 starts up after a fuel filter change and runs for 5 minutes and then dies out. Prime the fuel system and it will run 5 minutes again and dies out. No restart until priming. The engine was actually using only the fuel in the fuel filter housing. The fuel was not going into the fuel filter housing and it is NOT the fuel pump. The check ball in the fuel filter housing ended up sucking inside of itself blocking the fuel port

    I also noticed that you have the ten micron filter in your DAVCO. The ten micron is meant for a Cummins powered truck and the 25 micron is meant for the MX. We have seen where having the ten micron in place can cause fuel restriction on startup resulting in P0087 and potentially a rail control fault. The ball you are talking about is referred to as the 'No Filter No Run'(NFNR) ball and will stick like that when some additives or biodiesel are introduced into the system. This blocks the flow of fuel through the standpipe resulting in the exact problem you are describing. Nice investigative work and good video.

    Many mx13s have a small filter in the primer unit that can clog. Unscrew, remove, check and replace if needed. The check valve is one I didn't realize can be blocked! Appreciate that heads up! Not one service tech I've watched that took 20 mins to prime my filter turned that bleeded valve, or checked check valve or primer filter!

      I just got a 2016 pete 579 (paccar) drove it off the lot ran it for 2 months no problems then did my first oil change and on my first trip 2 weeks in gouges showing that my fuel filter needs replacing then 2 days later driving n had a bunch of codes comes up n check engine lights saying I got no DeF need to shut off engine to prevent damage while Def Guage going up n down from full to empty untill it settled down to how much I had in there about half a tank n started working fine now couple days later while driving throughout the days the fuel filter keeps going up n down from being ok to needing to get replaced but drive just fine untill today the fuel filter Guage is all the way in the red n now 6.codes came up I researched it basically telling me to replace fuel filter and the truck barely pulling at 50 mph so after doing my oil/fuel filters change rolled out on the road and 7000 miles later im sitting at the shop right now wit my truck barely driving 6 codes came up n im just hoping the fuel filter change will resolve this problem. Maan I love me these Pete's but all the electrical n Sensor issues are crazy n the more I look into it n read about it ppl have all sorts of problems with these newer trucks wit the Def issues or fuel issues or sensor issues and everything costs soo dam much its crazy while my dad has a 20 yr.old truck wit no Def n he never has any issues whats so ever its crazy so good luck to man I been driving couple years now n got this truck wit my dad so I could be owner operator also and withing the first 3 months of opening the truck every trip I get some codes.or little issues that pop up like my ambient air temperature sensor that just went out also it tells the outside temp but its connected to the trucks ECU computer n dealer said this little temp sensor can cause all sorts of other codes to come up n cause all sorts of problems for u n u can spend thousands of dollars at the shops n they won't figure it out so if u ever have that sensor go out or any other ones make sure u get it fixed right away cause apparently it only causes more n more issues n can leave u on the road spending alot of money like im about to do so good luck

      You are welcome. Although some may not agree with removing the ball it's only purpose is to prevent someone from installing the wrong micron fuel filter. I have left the ball out on quite a few of our fleet trucks with no issues of fuel draining back into the tanks

  • @gmuney9792
    @gmuney9792 Před 5 lety +1

    It also keeps the fuel from back flowing into the tank. So as the truck sits it won’t have any fuel in the fuel rail. So you will have to continue to prime it.

    • @Dakman
      @Dakman  Před 5 lety +1

      Not true. Once the engine is primed it stays primed unless you have a issue with the actual check ball, This plastic ball has nothing to do with keeping the fuel system primed. All of these balls have been removed in all of our trucks and yes some sit alot and not once did I have to go out and prime the system again. All this plastic ball does is to cut off fuel supply if you install the wrong micron fuel filter.

    There is proper way to prime a paccar engine I am diesel mechanic I worked at kenworth it’s starts without no issue lots of place don’t know lots of places use the air vacuum pump it works but there soo much easier way

    • @Dakman
      @Dakman  Před 3 měsíci +1

      I worked for Kenworth for years myself. This has nothing to do with priming a engine. This is a issue where the engine runs until it empties the fuel filter housing and doesn't keep it filled. That white plastic check ball gets flat spots and eventually gets stuck closed. It's only there to force you to use the proper micron fuel filter. But causes more issues as the mileage racks up. So we just removed the plastic white ball and have had no issues.

    • @Dakman
      @Dakman  Před 5 měsíci

      The fuel between the left side fuel tank and the right side fuel tank is a equal draw system. If you use up all of the fuel in the right side tank it will quit running even if the left side tank is full because it's pulling air. If this is what is really happening there is either a blocked hose for the draw tube or the return line for the one tank that doesn't empty. Also it's important that any fuel lines replaced to the fuel tanks are made in the exact length as removed. Best thing to do is remove the fuel lines from the tank that doesn't draw fuel and use compressed air to blow through them in case something is plugging them. But to answer your question that white ball has nothing to do with with fuel only drawing from one tank.

      Although it's quite a late reply, your system does not have this check ball. This check ball is there to block fuel supply if there's no filter element installed. Since the earlier models use a spin-on filter, they definitely would not be able to run without a filter installed.

    • @Dakman
      @Dakman  Před 5 měsíci +1

      The ball has nothing to do with keeping a prime. It's just there to make sure you install the correct micron fuel filter. If the micron is wrong it will plug off the port. If you can't keep a prime more than likely you have a leaking seal on the back side of the fuel filter housing. There are two ports there. One for supply and one for delivery. I have seen the seal go bad and allow fuel to drip out which causes a loss of prime. This seal isn't a easy job. You need to remove the entire fuel filter housing. Extra care must be taken when putting it back together because the port for the seal is sharp and you can easily cut the seal

    • @midnightrider1854
      @midnightrider1854 Před rokem

      If you are talking about one of the unit pumps, then no. The problem is a common one. We have had two trucks in a month do the very same thing. The mounting bolts somehow came loose whether they weren't torqued properly or whatever. But as they loosened, the pump continued to work itself loose until it broke both bolts and threw a few codes and caused the truck to break down. To this day, Peterbilt still has not given us a reason for this issue.

    And theres nothing blocking that line
    I haven’t tried the line that connects to the fuel pump that’s on the side of the frame yet
    But what other things should I try after that
    Would the supply line cause the fuel to get sucked from one side to the other???

    • @Dakman
      @Dakman  Před rokem

      Yes a supply line would cause fuel to get pulled from only one tank. There could be a piece of rubber inside the line that separated and is blocking the suction. Some Kenworth trucks have vents on the tanks with filters. There's a maintenance replacement of replacing those vent filters annually.

    So I just replaced a filter and check valve ....problem was losing prime...manually priming was pulling from the upside down fuel water separater housing then when i stopped priming it would refill the fuel water sep filter. Primed with filter off got bubbles installed new check valve with ball primed with screw loose got straight fluid...truck ran for about 20 mins then lost it again...tanks are visually both at 1/4 full
    What else could be the issue it's losing prime?
    Is there a check valve associated with the fuel water sep housing? And initially why priming did it pull from f/w sep then fill back up when stopped priming?

      We were having that problem on one of our trucks not too long ago and it turned out that it was the whole Prime and handle assembly. It has a check ball inside of it that was sticking open and was allowing the fuel to leak back by it slowly. Changed the complete primer assembly and no more issue.

    I would like to ask you a question. My 2015 KW with a paccar engine has been in the shop for 9 months and it seems like no one can figure out the problem. The truck will start and idle fine, when you start to give it fuel at around 800 rpms it will start blowing out black smoke (a lot of black smoke) and will not take any more accelaration . The mechanic has check injectors, fuel filter housing, fuel pressure, fuel pump, and still it is doing the same thing and no one can figure it out. No codes.

    • @Dakman
      @Dakman  Před 2 lety

      I'm wondering if you have a cam sensor issue. I have seen cam sensors give the ECM weird information but not code.

    will the hand pump will pump fuel into glass filter when the ball blocks fuel? when i pump with hand pump, i see fuel coming to glass pump, the truck starts, but shut up in 5 min.

    • @Dakman
      @Dakman  Před 4 lety

      Yes the hand pump will fill up the bowl. However the truck will use the fuel in the bowl and it will not refill that bowl if the ball is blocking the port therefore will empty the bowl and the engine will shut down

    Where does the ball come from to be sucked in the fitting like so

    • @Dakman
      @Dakman  Před 3 lety

      That ball is installed so if you put the wrong micron fuel filter in the housing it will shut the fuel off. Problem is the ball is plastic and does wear then finally falls out into the fuel housing

    Hi, I have problem with low fuel pressure. I have only 2 bars. I changed first fuel pump but it wasn't that. Have anyone the same problem? Engine is running but DPF is not regenerating.

    • @Dakman
      @Dakman  Před 2 lety

      You could have a problem with one of the unit pumps which are located on the left side of the engine or even a bad fuel pressure regulator. It will not do a regen if the ECM sees the fuel pressure is below a certain spec.

    Dose the bleeder valve need to stay hard after it has ran??

    • @Dakman
      @Dakman  Před 5 lety

      No once it is up and running that is it. Just make sure the hand primer pump is hard to push to ensure a proper prime. It should fire off. If you loose prime or if it stalls out and looses prime ditch the white ball in the video

    I replace my filters and try to prime it but it dose not prime what can it be

    • @Dakman
      @Dakman  Před 5 lety +3

      Depending on the year of the engine some of those Paccar MX13 engines can be real mean to prime. Just make sure you didn't get the white ball stuck in the port hole of the green cap because if you did it will shut off the fuel flow. The white ball should not be stuck in the green cap and should be floating around freely. Next "SOME" Paccar MX 13 engines have a bleeder, I show you this in the video. NEXT the newer Paccar MX 13 engines do NOT have a bleeder. So if you replace both fuel filters at the same time you will need 2 people to prime it. First pump the primer until it's hard. But it still will not start. ONLY after you get the primier pump hard have another person start cranking the engine over and continue to pump the primer pump as the engine is cranking. It will start then. NEVER replace both fuel filters at the same time on the newer Paccar MX13 engines. Replace one then start and run the engine for 5 minutes. Then do the same with the 2nd fuel filter....Good Luck

    thank you for the information. Do you by chance know if i can order it from anywhere else other than the dealer. if so do you know the name of the exact check ball repair kit or where i can get it.

    • @Dakman
      @Dakman  Před 5 lety +2

      Honestly if you just take out the ball like I show in the video you will never have another issue again. That ball is only in there so you are forced to put in the correct filer. It does protect the injectors from improper filtration in case the wrong filter is installed but unnecessary if you have your own shop and do your own repairs. The wrong micron rated fuel filter could allow debris to pass thru to cause too much restriction. We have removed all of ours in all of our Paccar MX 13 engines and had no issues
