Myst Part 1 - back in 1993, when dinosaurs still roamed the earth, Myst was released. The game's unique approach to mystery and puzzle solving resonated with video game developers everywhere. Pretty much every first person puzzle game took some inspiration from Myst. A 2021 remake just came out, let's see if it holds up.

How long ago is 1993 exactly? The exact amount of time is unsure, but historians place it between the dominance of the hunter-gatherer lifestyle and the first Mesopotamian society. Truly amazing that this game has withstood the test of time and receives remakes in our current year.

To set a frame of refrence for how old this game is, I once read a story that detailed someone's first playthrough of this game. When they were stuck, they called a hotline for in-game tips, the tip was to listen to the surrounding enviroment, which was hard for that user, because their PC didn't have an audio card.

In 2004 I once bought a copy of Ragnarök Online from my local newspaper stand. It came with a begginer's guide and a lot of maps and pictures I loved to browse through. Little did I know that the game was in a DVD and that my computer's drive was limited to CD's! Had to change that to install, which as a kid took a while for me to figure out. Then the Launcher had THREE GIGABYTES of updates to run through, which with my dial-up 35Kbps speed took me OVER 24H to update, and it failed multiple times due to loss of connections!
Weeks later I finally got to play it and I hated it and went back to my other games hahah

Me and my friends played this when I was a kid, and I traded walkthrough hints for the ability to play with my friend's toys. Which he begrudgingly allowed because I was the only kid in the neighborhood who had internet access and could look up guides online.
When Riven came out (on five CDs no less) I made sure to have my parents also buy the official guide book.

0:17 haven't looked into the new version so I might be mistaken as to what the randomize solutions option means, though for those who are unaware the older game had puzzles that had the same solutions set in stone. The reason why that's relevant is that if I recall it's really easy to speedrun the old version since technically you only needed to know the solution to a certain puzzle (and if you memorized that one solution, then all the other puzzles become obsolete).

    • @flatfingertuning727

To be slightly more specific [but de-spoilered], early on, one will find a book with a few hundred pages, each containing a grids with light and dark squares, and will likely find a sort of combination lock into which one must enter such a pattern. A puzzle near the end of the game will instruct the player of the location of the book (which the player will have likely found) and the lock (likewise), and instruct the player to enter the pattern from a particular numbered page and do something with what the lock reveals.
A serious weakness of the game, IMHO, is that the player is likely to stumble fairly early upon everything needed to win, and would likely be able to guess what to do with it, save for needing a particular page number.

I've played every version of this game, and each time I have to figure out the puzzles again anyways because it has been so long since I played the previous time... but I guess if you wanted to cheat or had an eidetic memory you might want the randomized puzzles.

Imma be honest i never played the original or realmyst, but as soon as i saw this on game pass i launched it and sat there for about 7 hours until i beat it. Then the next day i got the other endings and all achievements. What a fucking master piece. Really makes me want to play the original.

I played Myst in 1993 or maybe 1994. The graphics were actually pretty close to this, but you stepped from still picture to still picture. It was all ray trace rendered. Part of the reason it was so groundbreaking is that is was such a beautiful looking puzzle game for its day.

Myst was the game that got millions (thousands?) of people to go out and buy a CD-ROM for their computers to play it. The game was a point and click slideshow of what you were facing, and the only moving stuff was the QuickTime videos in those books. RealMyst added the actual 3D world but most people that played the original never played the 3D one.

My first puzzle game. I did it without help, but and it was hard. Then again that was literally years ago and I started it when I was much much younger. Came back to it every so often, until I finally started to figure some of it out. Good luck and have fun. I might see about trying to finish Riven.

Dude, you are now playing one of the ultimate time capsule games. It has been released/re-released so many times that every gamer ever has either heard of this game, played this game or beaten it (eventually). I see this game and I remember the original on CD-Rom version, and navigating via clicks (not being able to look around openly etc). Anyways, good luck the puzzles in this are both deceptively easy and frustratingly difficult. its never just one puzzle but layers upon layers of puzzles that all intertwine.

The puzzles only get more obscure the further into the games that you go. I remember my best friend and I spending an entire summer and several leftover notebooks from school on either the second or third one. We were in Jr. High, I think, so 12 or 13 years old?
You should also see if you can get your hands on a copy of the game based on the Xanth books. I believe it's DOS-era, I played it as a very small child. Companions of Xanth. The CD came with one of the Xanth books. It was absolutely wild.
Actually, honestly, DM me and we can work out finding you a copy (or a browser version) and settling on some kind of pay for you to play through Xanth, because what a fever dream of a game it is lol.

Myst was so powerful it inspired an interactive for a Webcomic
Homestuck A6A3 had a "Flash Myst" for one of the planets and then again for the final page of the comic on Earth to thank the reader (The latter didn't have any puzzles due to it being after the True Final Boss)

my family played this when i was a kid. 6 people never finished the game. all the puzzles are weirdly complicated.
If I remember the symbols that show up on the posts around the boat. activate the ones that (are/are not?) also in the astrology room. when you turn on the right posts on the ship rises out of the water.
most of the puzzles are multiple steps, and it takes a bit to recognize what the puzzle is suppose to be

Here's hoping this inspires you to play what is my favorite puzzle game of all time, the sequel to Myst, Riven. The atmosphere of the game was unparalleled at the time and even to this day is unmatched. It's nigh impossible without a strategy guide, which means you would have to accept help from chat in spots, but it's so worth it. With them remaking Myst I suppose there's a chance they'll remake Riven as well. Which would be cool from an accessibility standpoint, but I'm not sure it would do it any favors from a game-experience standpoint. Anyways, since I started watching you when you started playing Polybridge I've been hoping you'd eventually play Riven.

Another game similar to Myst is Shivers. I believe Shivers came out in 1995, so I'm sure it was inspired by Myst. I would enjoy watching Tyler play through Shivers, but I"m not sure if anybody else would. Would be a good game for October since it has a spooky theme to it.
