  • The Power Metal is strong with this one. First time Hearing and Reacting to Kamelot was a whole vibe. When The Lights Are Down might have to be the start of a new playlist.

    Ahhhh Roy. This may be the closest a metal vocalist has come to being a Method Actor. Watching him hammers home the point that when a singer actually understands and feels every lyric he sings, it just makes the whole piece so much more impactful

    Kamelot are amazing. So the first singer was Mark Vanderbilt who left in 1998, Norwegian singer Roy Khan (who was the singer in this video) was fronting the band until 2011 (Little side tangent - I had actually bought my first ticket to see Kamelot live during that time. The tour was postponed due to Khan falling ill and then they decided to do the tour with Fabio Lione from Rhapsody standing in, and then Khan left the band. So I never got to see them perform with Khan outside of this DVD). Their current singer is Tommy Karevik from Sweden, who is also the singer of progressive metal band Seventh Wonder.
    Oh, also, their keyboard player Oliver Palotai is German, and is actually married to Simone Simons from Epica.

  • @kjvail
    @kjvail Před 3 lety +1

    Roy Khan left in 2011. Not Thomas Youngblood. Youngblood is the primary composer, with the guy on keys. Fun fact, Oliver (keys) is hooked up with Simone Simmons. Imagine coming home every night to her!
    They kind of floundered a bit, they have a new vocalist who now is hitting his stride after two "meh" albums, their newest is fantastic and they have a new DVD that dropped just a few weeks ago.
    Roy Khan can't be "replaced", he's iconic, such intensity and charisma on top of an incredible voice, but Tommy is a excellent vocalist.

  • @echoct506
    @echoct506 Před 3 lety +2

    So. These two albums Epica and The Dark Halo are actually a retelling of the Tragedy of Dr Faust. This song is at the top of album two when the protagonist (Ariel in their telling) is drowning his sorrows away in other women. (Hence the "Tell me your real name - In the silence of the darkness we unite" line.) The title "When the lights are down" is basically a reference that if the lights are out he can pretend he's not haunted by what happened at the end of the last album.
    I ADORE those two albums. I found you during the nightwish discovery but Kamelot is fantastic. I hope you enjoy.
    Edit: The conversational lyrics are a theme through both albums (Because it's a play basically). 3 Ways to Epica does it a lot. So does March of Mephisto.
    EDIT2: Someone else recommended "The Haunting" Which is actually the song after this one in the album and it's when the protagonist realizes he can't run as his guilt still haunts him due to what happened to Helena in album one. Absolutely fantastic with the dueling vocals in that one.

    Darn I love re-watching cuts from this show! Roy Khan is one of the most charismatic frontmen in all metal, while possessing a voice that goes from a crooner to a powerhouse in a sec. All put to grrreat use by Thomas Youngblood and his merry band. :)) KAMELOT had been going from strength to strength for more than 10 years when Khan left, I believe, because he was having problems with his vox. He retired for close to a decade, and only recently made a reappearance with his original band, CONCEPTION. The only way KAMELOT could cope with the loss of such a frontman was by finding someone par to him - and they unbelievably did! The current voice of KAMELOT, Tommy Karevik, you may have heard in one of AYREON videos - if you haven't explored them, do not wait a minute longer! ;] - or in his own band, SEVENTH WONDER, that is in their own right a melodic Prog powerhouse. Tommy has the same warm tone as Khan but can go to different places with it. By all means, check him out also.
    It was actually interesting when you compared Khan's sound to Paul Stanley. For such a long time I thought this was beyond comparison, now I need to go re-listen to some KISS. :))) Meanwhile, you could delve into more KAMELOT, to see if your assessment holds - and to discover more timeless compositions, like "Center of the Universe", "Karma", "Soul Society", "The Haunting (Somewhere in Time)", in which the band get a visit from EPICA, and ultimately, the overwhelming "Elizabeth" trilogy. Enjoy, and we will, along with ya. \m/

    Thank you and please do more Kamelot! They always have heavy storytelling themes (There's even a Highlander - as in "There can be only one!" song), sometimes in individual songs, sometimes over full albums. With Roy singing, it's practically metal theater half the time. They did a version of the Faust story over the Epica and Black Halo albums (side note: Simone named Epica the band after Kamelot's Epica album which was super confusing when they toured together later lol). Tommy is a technically great singer, sounds a lot like Roy, and is a great replacement but nobody can match Roy's raw emotion. He'll always be my favorite because you can hear him singing the lyrics from his soul.
    Personally, I'd love to see you review songs from 4th Legacy, Karma, Epica, The Black Halo, and Ghost Opera. Poetry for the Poisoned was a mixed bag and poor Roy was on his last legs from burnout on that one. The new stuff is still good, but without Roy the songwriting lost some of its heart. It's still fun and definitely worth listening to, especially with having guests like Alissa.
    Recommendations: March of Mephisto, Moonlight, Center of the Universe, The Edge of Paradise, Solitaire (intro track)+ Rule The World, The Human Stain, Pendulous Fall, and Forever. I highly recommend listening to Epica then The Black Halo in order just because of the storytelling but it's not 100% necessary to enjoy it. Btw the Elizabeth I-III people are recommending is fun because it follows Elizabeth Bathory's decent into madness.
    At some point I'd love to see you do some Sonata Arctica (power metal - try Don't Say A Word track or the whole For The Sake Of Revenge live album) and Fleshgod Apocalypse (technical symphonic death metal - try Labyrinth or Veleno albums)
    Thus ends my novel. Thank you!

    One of the best bands out there. Simple as that. When Roy joined as their vocalist, he brought the sound of his previous band "Conception" with him, influencing their sound and the merge of those 2 worlds was pure magic. They are still great to this day, even without him. \m/ This band is close to my heart and I am so looking forward to you reacting to them. Jade \m/

    Also there is kind of a relationship between Kamelot and Epica, when Epica was formed they took the concept and the name of a Kamelot album and made it the name for the band, also when Roy was the singer, they had several duets with Simone Simmons, and she is married to Oliver Palotai, Kamelot's keyboardist as well

    Do wish I could've been there, but I was a bit young (and moreso poor) to go off on a concert. When I finally did go to a Kamelot concert, while at the hotel my brother and I were staying at we heard that Khan had departed from the band and that he wouldn't take part in the concert. Got Fabio Lione of Rhapsody covering for him tho, which was pretty awesome. Been a fan of Rhapsody for as long as I have Kamelot.

    Not sure if anyone corrected this, but when you read the little snippet about the band at the beginning, there was an error. Thomas Youngblood isn’t the one who left the band in 2011, Roy Khan (the vocalist in this video) did.
    Anyway, I’m so excited you’re finally reacting to Kamelot! Next I suggest the song Liar Liar (studio version) as well as the live version of The Haunting from that same concert (One Cold Winter’s Night), which features Simone Simons from Epica!

    I saw Kamelot perform with Roy in London. Their bassist was unwell so they had a stand-in. Opened with March of Mephisto and within 30 seconds the bass cuts out. Looking around the stage, the bassist is just gone. Turns out he fell off the stage, broke his leg. He insisted on being carried back on stage and was propped up on a stool for the rest of the set. He was carried off, he demanded to be carried back on to do the encore before he would go to hospital. By then he was white as a ghost and Roy kept getting the crowd really riled by going "THAT'S SO FUCKING METAL!"
    It was an amazing experience and shows the dedication of musicians.
