    I'll add on to what Julian said. I just did a complete spark plug replacement, and after I was done and had everything reassembled, I started the car only to discover a VERY rough idle and the car stalling when I attempted to move it in either reverse or drive. Turns out one of the coils was not pushed in far enough, so that cylinder was not firing at all. I pushed the coil in until I felt almost a soft "pop" as the terminal of the spark plug and the ribs seated properly into the rubber receptacle of the coil. Also, make sure that you hear a "click" when you close the clips on each ignition coil. It helps to push the connector housing in towards the coil with one hand as you push down on the clip with the other, until you hear that "click". Finally, might want to consider starting the car before putting the aesthetic engine cover back on, just to make sure she's running smoothly before turning off the engine and reassembling everything else.

    Excellent instructional. When you get hung up with certain parts, be patient like he said. I did this today on my 2010 BMW 328i and this video was a big help. A must have is at least a 12 inch 3/8 extension with a good lock. You won't necessarily need to remove the strut brace so that extra length is helpful.

    Thank you for your informative video. Even though I had previously refered to my Haynes workshop manual for changing my spark plugs, when I came across your video I was impressed by the clear, calm and concise manner you went about explaining how it was done.
    I had trouble removing the ignition coils on my 2003 318ti, (they look similar to the coils in your video) due to there not being enough room around them to get a proper grip. After a long time of fruitless pulling, I had the idea of putting the end of a wooden spoon handle (a socket extension or screwdriver shaft of the right thickness and length would also have been suitable I think) through the hole of the coil clip and using the top of the engine as a fulcrum. I was initially worried that I might break the clip, but with just a slight push on the other end of the spoon, I was able to easily remove the coils.
    The Haynes workshop manual mentioned a tip of fitting a short length of 8 mm internal diameter rubber/plastic hose over the end of a spark plug to initially screw it in, so if it starts to cross thread the hose will slip on the plug, thereby preventing thread damage to the cylinder head.
    I started using a spark plug boot on the end of a wooden dowel to hold spark plugs in place to make it easier to replace them and also to prevent cross threading when replacing spark plugs on my VW Beetle many years ago.
    I still have that self made tool, so I used it on the BMW again, but the Haynes manual never mentioned the tip of using a lever to remove the ignition coils. I wish they had, as it would have saved me a lot of time and trouble before I came up with the idea to use a lever to remove those stubborn ignition coils!

    • @steveevanitsky2381
      @steveevanitsky2381 Před 4 lety

      @@InitechAuto I asked a BMW certified mechanic, and here is what NKG states:
      "1. Anti-seize
      NGK spark plugs feature what is known as trivalent plating. This silver- or chrome-colored finish on the threads is designed to provide corrosion resistance against moisture and chemicals. The coating also acts as a release agent during spark plug removal. NGK spark plugs are installed at the factory dry, without the use of anti-seize. NGK tech support has received a number of tech calls from installers who have over-tightened spark plugs because of the use of anti-seize. Anti-seize compound can act as a lubricant altering torque values up to 20 percent, increasing the risk of spark plug thread breakage."

Everything went as described for me except that when I completed the job a new problem cropped up.
    Mine is a 2011 328i X-drive, 60K miles. I replaced the spark plugs with the specified NGK plugs in laser iridium. Double checked the factory gaps on all. I also replaced all the coil packs with the Bosch part for the Delphi coils I pulled out. The problem I have now is on cold start and only on cold start. The engine starts easily and immediately but then shutters, stutters, and shakes a bit. The RPM's dip to under 1K for a moment then bounce up to about 1,200 for another moment. After 30 seconds or so this behavior stops and the RPM's drop down to smooth idle at around 800. Everything seems normal and silky smooth until the next cold start. Thanks for any thoughts on what I might have done along the way to bring about this new behavior.

      The only thing I can think of is. Check the eccentric cam sensor connector for oil. Make sure the connector is clean. The seal can be replaced if its leaking. My car used to have a similar problem on cold starts. I ended up replacing the sensor in the end. Also, check for engine codes. Make sure all your coil connectors are fully engaged and tight.

    After 40,000 miles . I was getting some vibration with engine idling & A/C running. I don't believe people actually think we can run this many miles on original plugs and coils . It gets hot in there where we put in our coils. Dealer said he felt the vibration but his read out showed no issues. He could change the plugs and coils but could not guaranty the out come $750.00 for coils and plugs. This is my second BMW. I decided to do it my self, only I used double Platinum sparks and Delphi coils . The vibration ceased , the gas millage went up ,and the car is more fun to drive with the increase in power. The old sparks didn't look to bad until I compared them to the double Platinum sparks (definitely an awesome plug) , no comparison tho the NKG bosh plugs . The Delphi coils, if nothing else look better made , they have a metal cover around them which I suspect helps to keep them cooler. I found something else out and that is that the dealer diagnostic only shows what the cars computer tells it.

    another trick and I have done this for just about every vehicle I have charged spark plugs on. Remove and install one at a time and as you pull the new plug from the box you insert the old plug into the same box. Mark the box with what cylinder you removed from. I do that and can go back later and cross reference the plugs and determine in wear is even across all cylinders or is one plug wearing differently and isolate any problem cylinders or problem plugs.

      The air ratchet I'm using is made by Mac Tools. It's a 3/8 drive. It finally died on me after 20+ years of service. Thank god I had a backup. You can find other brands like Matco Tool, Snap-On, and many others on the market now. It's about 7 inches long and is very handy to be able to get into tight places. The torque is about 10 to 15 foot-pounds. So it will not over tighten stuff.

    Great job on the video really appreciate it. Two issues I had problems with is getting the coils out and getting the plugs out. Even with spark plug pliers no luck. Could be I'm a weakling. My solution was to take a screw driver and place it through the opening on coil latch using it for leverage . I sprayed wd 40 and put oil down the cylinders to loosen up the plugs, then let soak for a while. Have to be careful with alumni heads and steel plugs. Thx

You spared us the stupid millennial techno beat music with the mouse-sounding screeching and instead of skipping small steps, you took the time to show everything. What an array of tools you have! Question: after you re-installed the (not the beauty cover) large plastic housing (20-30 degree angle) you adjusted something that looks yellow on each side of the hood. What is that and can you possibly elaborate? Thanks. 06 325xi wagon manual owner (Btw the westlake village ca dealership tried to charge me $1950 for plugs and ignition coils...500 for plugs and 1450 for coils); I had to do plugs as I was on the road and the car would barely run). Might I ask a question? I carefully ordered the correct coils from autohaus az --the Delphi brand or something like that (well known)--and they mechanically were cheap; the wire harness wouldn't stay fully jammed into the coil. So I returned them for the Bosch equivalent --also approved for my car... now... the new Bosch ones won't stay on the plugs. I cleaned everything with dry paper towel over and over, the cavity the tips of the plugs and the coil... you push down on the rubber coil and as soon as you are done pressuring it, the coil comes off of the spark plug. The dealer in L.A installed the plugs at huge expense. So I don't know what kind they used. Any suggestions? I had to put back 3 old Bosch coils and was able to make 3 new Bosch ones stay. Now it runs smoothly with a slightly rough idle. Yes, I very firmly pressed the coils into the plugs.. to the point that I thought I'd break something. No help. What sort of plugs do you use or? So so frustrating!!!

    • @InitechAuto
      @InitechAuto  Před 7 lety +1

      I would have to compare the after market coils to the originals to try and figure what the difference is. The coils in the video, are the originals. So I had no problems with them. I don't see the need to replace all coils. They do fail. But not very much. I'm not sure why everyone is doing that. If I had a misfire after the spark plug replacement. Then I would look at the coils. And even then, I would only replace the failed coil. Not the whole set. I think the mindset of the public is to just shotgun everything and not try to figure out what the problem is. Is it the spark plug or coil? So In a effort to save time, they replace everything.

      Nicoya yeah but you're much smarter than most owners. Most mechanics have a "blow and go" approach as you hint, as they don't want to immerse themselves in any one repair. Lol... btw, my buddy has an early Porsche Cayenne with the 4.5v-8... do you happen to know how hard it is to change out the plugs or coil/s? Curious.
