My uncle made that D-Day jump with the 101st, he told me what it was like years later.

@@mrmojorisin6951 my great uncle did the same thing but he was in Africa captured a German officer . my uncle asked him to hand over his Luger and my uncle was surprised when he spoke English he told my uncle no that he has to give it too his commanding officer he was on his tank so my uncle lefted up his 50cal. Clock it back and told him if he didn't give his Luger up that he was going to blow his head up lol German officer did handed to him but later yrs n yrs my dad told me that when uncle passed away that his son took over and sold it for drugs dam him and I wasn't happy about it .
After reading a ton of information on D-Day those men who were in the airborne as well as the infantry coming ashore on bloody Omaha were average guys doing a job that is still unequaled on such a grand scale. Though they may not feel that way about themselves these men are heroes and deserve our deepest respect and gratitude for what they accomplished, both large and small.
This is from back when the History Channel had documentaries instead of these garbage 'reality' shows. I wish they would make more stuff like this again.

God bless all the soldiers who landed on D-Day. Those who made the ultimate sacrifice did not die in vain but became heroes of the world and those who've lived through to V.E. Day must continue to tell their stories despite growing fewer in number every year.

It's sad. Today's politics. They were sad then too. But today's makes the old look not so bad. A lot of these soldiers made the ultimate sacrifice. I will never forget. I'm 34 and can't stress enough how important history is. Good or bad.

My father landed on D+1 with 175/29 Division. He said the man next to him was killed debarking from the landing boat. All my father could think was that the man owed him $10.

@@IloveGaming-yb2ny When you look at the statistics, since the founding of the Federal Reserve in 1914 the value of the Dollar has fallen 92% to 98% depending on which source you look at. When I was a kid in Chicago in the 60s we went to a Cubs game. It cost $1 to get into the bleachers. I spotted a $20 lying on the ground near the refreshment stand. I pounced on that pretty quick. That was a lot of cash back then.
But, he paid with his life...priceless.

`My Dad Came ashore at Omaha on day 2 he had to fight threw the hedge rows to Saint-Lo . He never talked about until he was in his 80's. At night he would have terrible nightmares and cry till morning I asked him why all he would say is I lived and they didn't ( referring to his buddies)
My grandpa, of 29th infantry division, K company, was among the first men on the sand of Omaha. Only 1 of 13 to survive that day in June. He always said that he believed it wouldn’t have worked if not for the combined efforts of the paratroopers, navy, and the army.
I always feel sorry for all the men who took part in this undertaking. I'm glad they did and will honor them for their commitment and sacrifice. My pop was in Algiers when they invaded Normandy. They were getting ready to back them up. He got shot in his leg. A million dollar wound they called it.
A lot of good guys died for what we have. Let's not let it go to waste. 🇺🇸

My father was there at Omaha Beach after the D day landing. Bodies covered the beaches for 100 yards inland. He was in the 116th Infantry, 29th Division. He died at 69 years of age in 1985. He was 27 years old when drafted. He never forgot what he saw of the carnage the German SS troops did to women and children, as well as our men. He could not bear to talk much about it. These were great men!
There were no German SS Troops at Omaha beach.
@@frankvandergoes298 Frank, I'm sorry I didn't make it clear. Dad fought all the way from the Normandy Beach across the land into Germany, and he saw the remains of many who perished at the hands of the SS troops in various cities he went through.

Wrong, it gives the American paratroopers perspective, Remember the British had there own airborne Divisions that landed on D-Day and that were different to the Americans.

These paratroopers were unbelievably BRAVE and HARD TOUGH.
The projections they made for the landing was pretty close as far as deaths. They under reported after the landing for morale. The allies had advantages also, command of the air, fire support of the battle ships, confusion of German Head Quarters and Hitler.
Props to the Combat Engineers who were among the first to hit omaha, clearing the obstacles and making a path for the other waves, many of them died, but they did an amazing job on that beach, their actions saved a lot of soldiers.👍

Armored Personnel Carriers would have been a huge benefit here, if they’d had them.
The reason the landing went so badly was because none of the Tanks made it to sure, all other landing sites had Tanks on the beach.

My Gpa was a Captain of LCT on Dday, Normandy, 1st Wave, Ship to shore. Just like opening scene of saving private ryan.

My dad was with the 2nd - 9th Mechanized Infantry (The unit's patch was the Highway sign with a Indian Chief on it)
my dad was at omaha..he told me..it was like invading a slaughter house....
Sad when you think about the powers at be, sending so many men into a fight they knew many would die, and die quickly with close to no chance at all. They knew this, but sent them anyway. These were truly heroic, brave men.
I don't understand why the previous aerial bombardment wasn't directed along the line of the coast rather than across it. Surely much more chance of hitting the defences.
if you do bombardment a long the coast, you're more likely to wipe out all the divisions on the coast no?

After first wave met heavy opposition on Omaha beech why didn't remainder land on less defended Juno or sword already taken by Canadians and flank Omaha.
It wasn’t that they were less defended, the Tanks didn’t make it to the beach at Omaha, all other beach’s had successfully landed the tanks, it’s a myth that other beaches where easier or less defended. It was simply that Omaha Tanks were launched to early and sank. Which made the battle much harder than expected.
Man to have like a drone up in sky filming this assault with birds eye view would of been legendary to see. Its too bad very limited footage exists today of landings and combat of Dday.

I've been reading abt. WW2 since grade school. We had complete air supremacy even before D-Day, & I was just wondering why our "jabos" (the German term for our ground support a/c then) didn't strafe or used rockets & bombs on the German machine gun nests & other strong points atop those cliffs at Omaha beach before H-hour (6:30am). Even the naval bombardment seemed to fall farther inland & failed to hit the German defenses close to the waterline. Looks like our Navy in the Pacific did a better job in silencing Japanese defenses in their island-hopping. Our effective pre-landing naval bombardment there forced the enemy to keep on changing their beach defenses depending on the tactics of the island's garrison commander.
Truly the greatest generation.
They would run through the water while getting shot to a sea wall to throw some kind of bombs at the sea wall and take the beach
How did they climb the bluffs?
I have a question. Why wasn’t napalm used just before the landings, especially on Omaha and Utah beaches and Point Du Hoc? Some Marine squadrons could have been transferred from the Pacific theater who were trained in ground support or trained army pilots in close in support. The napalm would have been used right after the naval gun support had lifted. The planes would fly parallel to the beaches dropping the napalm in the German trenches. This would have saved thousands of men from being wounded or killed. Does any one have an answer?
Aerial use of napalm hadn't proved itself in a tactical capacity by mid-1944, as it was mostly still used by heavy AAF bombers. I don't even think Marine fighter squadrons were using napalm at this point.

The US fought the Germans in North Africa, Sicily, and liberated Rome on June 4, 1944.
Why didn't the landing craft have a .50 cal up front for covering fire? In the pacific against the Japanese this tactic was used. On the beaches of Normandy the soldiers were sitting ducks. A heavy machine gun would have saved lives.
I saw an interview of someone on the boat at D day. His job was supposed to be to fire the .50 cal but they changed it a week before and didn’t use them. he said he didn’t know why

The rest of the defenders where Czechoslovakians in the German Army and

D-Day is nothing when compared to Stalingrad!
D-Day battle was like a walk in the park when compared to Stalingrad or even Leningrad!
Had Germany deployed it's Panzer divisions as recommended by Erwin Romel, then D-Day would have been something to compare with Stalingrad.
The Panzer divisions in Normandy were under personal command of Adolf Hitler who was sleeping on D-Day.
Americans on DDay had nothing to do with this fight.
In Stalingrad it was Russian vs German, the Russians were fighting for their land.
American troops should never have been sent to die for Europeans.

With all the respect for the americans in normandy, the marines, the paratrooper and the tank crew but the americans really overestimate Omaha beach and the entire d-day, when the d-day happened the germany was yet falling apart, the d-day just accelerate the end. Again, with all the respect for the veterans and who died on Omaha beach, i dont want to say that the landing was easy and i respect the dead.

No, you left everything out. Omaha beach had to be shelled again. The paratroopers landed in the wrong area. And the biggest help came from the French Resistance giving German Positions up to the allies and the pathfinders.
As a former Marine officer, I remember as a 2ndLt., sitting in a training class on amphibious assault, taught by a USMC colonel. He stated that the Marine Corps never would have chosen Omaha Beach as a landing site because it forced the assault troops to land right at the base of high cliffs. The motion picture film and still photos shot from the back of landing craft certainly show these cliffs. The colonel went on to say that “who ever picked Omaha Beach should have gone to Leavenworth”. I have often wondered why this is never mentioned in any of the history books/documentaries?
Omaha Beach was chosen for logistical purposes, since the terrain elsewhere along the Normandy coast was prone to inundation or was too heavily defended. It was also only believed to have been defended by a single under strength regiment. Which was true until the week before the landing, when OKW sent reinforcements to the St Lo area, and at that point there was no going back even if SHAEF was aware.

Logistical reasons….if that was the justification given by the planners who chose Omaha, yep they should have gone to Leavenworth. How about choosing your landing beaches with regard to TACTICAL REASONS!
Logistics or not, you do not send in assault troops right into the face of high cliffs and withering machine gun fire.
Had it not been for the gallantry of the two US Navy destroyers who went in close, in dangerously shallow water to blast the Germans off the cliffs, Omaha would have been even worse if not a total failure. You never put your troops in a position where they must be braver than the enemy. That is not how the battlefield works. The enemy will be as brave or as cowardly, for planning purposes, as you will be. You win with numerical superiority. In other words it is a checker game, and you attack with three times as many checkers. Bedford Forrest said it best….
“I get there firstest, with the mostest”.
@@joanofarc1338 They were required to sustain the largest amphibious invasion in history. Logistics wasn't something they could disregard. Everyone knew the landing wasn't going to be easy, even with the assumption of weak enemy defenses. That's why they sent the best troops to Omaha Beach, and the landings were a success because of them and their tactics. You have to remember that as bad as the landing phase was, the fight inland was much worse. Unless SHAEF wanted another Salerno or Anzio, logistics had to be every bit as important as tactics.

Actually, elements of the first wave reached the top of the bluffs at various points before the destroyers closed in to neutralize the stronger defenses. No doubt the Navy destroyers helped, but by no means were they the linchpin holding the landings together.

I just can’t buy “ for logistical purposes “ as any justification for choosing Omaha. Seems to me there were plenty of beans, bullets and bandages getting ashore through Gold, Juno, Sword and UTAH to make the blood bath that was Omaha unnecessary. They picked the wrong beach. If Omaha was the only alternative, perhaps they just should have gone in at Utah….since they came razor close to shifting to Utah anyway. Nuf said.
@@joanofarc1338 Hindsight is 20/20. There was no way Allied planners could foresee that every beachhead would be successfully established. Those beans, bullets and bandages were meant to support Montgomery's forces, not Bradley's. And even if there were enough supplies, what would happen if the Americans could not link up with Anglo/Canadian forces or vice versa? What if floodwater prevented any significant movement off Utah Beach? What if a panzer division counter attacked the US beachheads on day one? These aren't problems that can be solved with tactics alone.
Another thing to consider. Omaha Beach was ten miles away from the British landings. Take Omaha out of the picture and how much of a gap do think the Germans have to exploit? Without Omaha Beach, US forces would have been sealed off in the Cotentin peninsula while the British and Canadians would have been pummeled on all sides. If the logistics of the operation fail, then so will the tactics.

The brave US troops landed in the wrong place because, for whatever reason, the US planners declined to follow the Brits/Canadians who had the RN use midget submarines to precisely mark the boundaries to ensure they landed on the precise planned locations.
On Omaha the USN released the DD tanks 6000 metres ftom the shoreline, most of which never made it. I cannot establish reasons why.
The US generals declined to use Hobarts funnies. I dont know why

A lot of countries on this list who have nothing to do with communism. It's been decades for instance that Russia was no longer communist, but a market economy

The Germans’ machine guns fired 20 rounds per SECOND? No way. Maybe 2 rounds per second. [Edit: Service rate of fire was actually 153 rounds per minute, or about 2.5 rounds per second. Video says 1,200 rounds per minute. Reality: 153 rounds per minute. That’s a HUGE difference that calls into question a lot of History Channel’s claims].
I have watched a lot of WW2 videos. One said the USS Hornet carried B52 bombers on the Doolittle Raid. False. The B52 is a massive beast, not a carrier aircraft (and not built until 1955, 13 years after the Doolittle Raid).
One said Zero fighters were circling a US carrier task force at 90,000 feet. False. Zeros are piston-engine airplanes, not spacecraft. Their service ceiling was 37,000 feet.
Here’s the point: These videos contain a lot of errors. Watch skeptically.
The German mg 42 machine gun could fire 1200 rounds per min which makes it 20 rounds per second. If I recall the nickname given to it was BUZZSAW because of its high rate of fire.
